I read a book written about Joan Kennedy years ago and the hell she went through married to Ted. That she ended up a broken down alcoholic is understandable. Jackie was actually one of the few Kennedy women that was kind to her and Ethel was cold and mean and of course Ted was awful.

Congress used to be very stingy about all this brass running around. Don't need a bunch of puffed up brass types running around in a republic.
During WWII (and a similar thing in WWI), a special army was created apart from the regular army. This was the "Army of the United States", a special war time creation.
Eisenhower, while a 4-star in the Army of the US, remained a colonel in the Regular Army until 1943, when he was promoted to 2-star in the Regular Army.
He then went to 5-star in the Army of the US. It wasn't until 1946 that they made him a 5-star in the Regular Army.
