Supposedly the new Marvel Rivals game is doing well, and I think it's because the creators wisely leaned in on playing up the beauty of the characters. Sticking to my assessment that there may have been a few projection drones up there, but most of them were the next generation of trapped display holograms. Come on, only out at night, only along the coast, doing maneuvers defying physics, no radar signature, don't make sound. The DOD has been marrying holograms to lasers with the ability to do sky projections. Quality was the goal, and using holograms to portray blinking lights (which disappeared sporadically) seems to have been accomplished.
