Choosing between pix, reminds me of eye examinations--is A clearer or B.
My guess is different lighting for the images when taken plus possibly filters. Dirt and aging can also affect an image if the painting is not kept well away from light and protected from crud in the atmosphere. Older paintings need to be cleaned (sometimes restored) from time to time and often amazing lost details are discovered in the murk. Posted by: whig at February 03, 2025 09:43 AM (ctrM5) 78

For Russian NGOs and independent media operating in exile, many of which cannot generate revenue from donations or advertising inside Russia due to their designation as “foreign agents” or “undesirable organizations,” the sudden cutoff of U.S. funding is potentially devastating. “This is the biggest funding crisis for Russian civil society since 2015, when Russia’s law on ‘undesirable foreign organizations’ caused several Western private foundations to shut down their Russia programs,” a Washington, D.C.-based source familiar with U.S. government funding for Russian organizations told The Moscow Times. Dirt and aging can also affect an image if the painting is not kept well away from light and protected from crud in the atmosphere. Older paintings need to be cleaned (sometimes restored) from time to time and often amazing lost details are discovered in the murk.

I prefer the second version with its slightly greater detail and context. My first thought, like others here, was of a cave painting. This makes me think of a descendent of the Impressionist school. Not sure if this is deliberate or a style but I find myself looking more trying to work out the details. Not a fan of the style but it does draw the eye of the viewer.

The other huge thing from this weekend besides Trump kneecapping the left's funding?
The Census Director voluntarily resigning. People may remember my harping on the fucked up 2020 census that the Bureau outright admitted that it screwed up. Analysis from outside groups showed that it misappropriated 15-17 House seats/Electoral College votes. Getting the guy to just voluntarily walk off? Someone is very serious about cleaning up the Census Bureau. The guy himself? Dedicated activist for "underreprestented peoples" or whatever. Think there's massive fraud going on at the Census that's going to be addressed? I think the chances of Trump demanding a reapportioning of the House and Electoral College this Congress based on the corrected 2020 numbers has gone up from 0.01% probability to 1.9% probability. For Russian NGOs and independent media operating in exile, many of which cannot generate revenue from donations or advertising inside Russia due to their designation as “foreign agents” or “undesirable organizations,” the sudden cutoff of U.S. funding is potentially devastating.
That means they were doing one of two things: 1) Supporting the Uke side of the war 2) Pushing Big Gay or Tranny on kids Since Russians can get a hold of western news sources for the former if they want its really not much of a concern. I don’t know this painter, but the name does remind of someone I think I am related to from the early 1900’s with the last name of Waddell. He introduced himself as “Waddle”, I guess because people were always getting his name wrong. My grandmother not yet part of the family apparently said, “But surely your name is pronounced Wad-del? “ His response: “I’ve waddled this far through life. I might as well waddle the rest of the way.” It’s one of those apocryphal stories that get handed down in families about all sorts of things. Posted by: rhennigantx at February 03, 2025 09:57 AM (gbOdA) Rube Waddell was one of the most interesting/odd players in baseball history. Which photo do I prefer? More accurately, for me, is which image do I read as more accurate with respect to the painting.
The white balance in the second image strikes me as being completely off - too yellow. It also appears to be under exposed which has plugged some of the darker arears of the image - this causes a loss detail. The one from the museum has a more neutral white balance which preserves the blue and yellow tonalities. Based on my experience with photography this reads as more accurate. As for the exposure, it looks spot on. There is minimal plugging of the dark regions while the highlights are held without losing their delicate nature. Red Lodge Horses
Theodore Waddell Having spent more than a hours photographing landscapes I find Waddell in this painting is crushing it. If one let's their mind reduce a scene to its fundamentals, highlights, shadows, the full range of subtle tonalites, you arrive at something like this painting. It is an abstraction of reality but for me at the same time reads as a precisely accurate representation of that snowy field and its horses. Effectively he has written a visual poem of that moment and that place. It is a timeless place I have visited my times in my life. In spite of no dog, this is a great bit of work Would hang. I like 'em, and I guess that means I don't mind eating baby shit, but they're really not going to be a great loss if the price goes up. As it is, when you buy them you have to cut them up at just the right time. Too early and they're hard and flavorless, too late and they're soggy and brown-rotted. Meh. The problem is whether one's monitor is accurate.
The first one is better as the colors are more true to the real painting as depicted in linked photo which includes color bars and a gray scale. If you are not seeing CYMRGB as CMYRGB and a gray scale as gray, it will be off like the second one above which is way too yellow - it is snow, not horses peeing in the snow. https://tinyurl.com/2jp4fu8s Posted by: George Eastman's Ghost at February 03, 2025 12:49 PM (JHDko) 492

Neither image is better because the lighting and color saturation of the camera used by the photographer biases the outcome. What the author painted represents what he intended as his emotion he was trying to capture and project to his audience. The viewer can only experience that by physically being in front of the actual art.
Maybe Waddell wanted it to have blueish, cold overtones. Maybe he wanted it to have amber, warm overtones. Maybe neither image truly captures the overtones Waddell created to express his fealings. Posted by: john at February 03, 2025 02:30 PM (nEWxZ) 494
