What I would like to see is Trump declare that he wants to slash income tax and make up the revenue by taxing the states, which was how things used to be done.
This would allow him to dismantle more federal agencies since the states would have that revenue for themselves. Let each state decide how it wants to meet the federal requirements. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at January 25, 2025 10:25 PM (ZOv7s) 109

Initial rates were 2% on incomes over 500,000 in today’s confetti bucks. Why not just do that?
They all want to nibble around the edges and give rebates, tax credits, but they are still killing people. I’m not persuaded government “needs” tax revenue when they have a printing press anyway. But regardless, tax rates now start at 15% on income of 35,000. That looks pretty sad, it happened in roughly 100 years. Posted by: Common Tater at January 25, 2025 10:35 PM (Pq0CS) 140

Income tax basically reversed the flow of money. Whereas it once came from the states to the federal government, now it all goes to the feds, with a tiny sliver being paid to the states, who then need federal dollars to function.
You don't need to change the Constitution to reverse this, just have Congress pass a bill taxing the states and lowering income taxes to 1 percent. Tariffs can make up the rest. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at January 25, 2025 10:37 PM (ZOv7s) 146

It was a measure of economic value, not some weird human worth scale. So if Congress needs $2 trillion, you apportion that by population to the states, and each kicks in it share. I have a question for the horde. Has anyone else noticed video from the past, say 70's or 80's being shown on youtube only as 480p or even worse, or even being available as 1080p or better and still being ridiculously smeared out low resolution? This happens constantly even though I've seen better resolution of these videos in the past.
The conspiracy minded me thinks this is an effort to obscure the past, but the probable answer is just some IP rights thing, and/or a youtube channel convenience thing. Regardless, I am not a fan. Posted by: irright at January 25, 2025 10:46 PM (fo8+T) 179

>>Income tax basically reversed the flow of money. Whereas it once came from the states to the federal government, now it all goes to the feds, with a tiny sliver being paid to the states, who then need federal dollars to function.
One of the first act of Congress when it was first established was the Tariff Act of 1789. That was the major funding source of the federal government for over a century. That was the original flow of money. We were never intended to have a federal government that needed a federal income tax. What has been flipped is a fundamental misunderstanding of the role of the federal government and the states. This is exactly what my little state feared and caused it to hold for a year before signing the Constitution. Posted by: JackStraw at January 25, 2025 10:56 PM (LkLld) 213

The Federal government, when they want to do something, they know how to get it done. Quickly. Almost astonishingly quickly.
The Manhattan project was an example. The Apollo project was another. They did soend enormous amounts of money, but they marshalled the expertise and resources and had top notch administrators to oversee the project. Even the Pentagon, still one of the largest office buildings in the world, was laid down Sept. 11 1942 and finished in a year or so. Empire State building. Hoover dam, etc. The fact that the border has been largely wide open to illegal migration for decades, means the government wanted it that way. No other conclusion can be drawn. Politicians would pay lip service. “I lobbied for more money to secure the border. More money for schools.“ Blah blah blah. Posted by: Common Tater at January 25, 2025 10:56 PM (Pq0CS) 215

The dues are a pain in the ass, but the benefits are worth it. Assistance in locating and training minions, rebates on the cost of shipping the soil of one's native land, ready-to-hand funding for encouraging the Authorities to look the other way, developing strategies to ward off the inevitable mobs of villagers attempting to assault one's stronghold with torches and pitchforks. The yearly conventions in Alaska during the forty days of night portion of the year are a blast. Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, made regular appearances in her prime, as did Dick Van Patten. However, I've read some persuasive analyses that the guns defending the Turkish Straits were too well sited and protected for even more aggressive Brit commanders to have succeeded. Missed the Pet Thread today. Was visiting hubby.
There's this really friendly little black kitty that hangs around the facility, which is in a residential area. Cat probably lives nearby. Anyway, that cat 'greeted' me the other day in the parking lot and then jumped into my car! Had a good laugh & let him (?) snuff around before scooping him out. Grabbed my bags of stuff and the lil sh@t jumped back in & up onto the dash, where he stretched out for the sunbeams. *sigh* I took a picture of him there, then scooped him out again. LOL. Hubby said kitty jumped into his lap this morning when he went out for a smoke. (They allow it, with supervision) He likes the cat, made him happy as he misses his Little Buddy at home. Ciampino - there’s an interesting anecdotal or apocryphal story that goes all the way back to GHW Bush days. The CIA wanted to show off their look-alike disguise to George, an old spook himself. This guy shows up. George expects to see him open up a briefcase or something and start donning the equipment. Oh no. He is the double.
He starts ripping off his face, like in a movie or whatever. Bush says “Stop!!” and proceeds to inspect closely. Almost completely undetectable, so the story goes. It would prove useful for a lot of things, if they could have convincing doubles, maybe. Posted by: Common Tater at January 26, 2025 12:17 AM (Pq0CS) 436

As for them being the OGs of unionizing monstrosity, Orlok, being a mere six hundred years old, is too young to pontificate on the topic. Her father was born in Italy, but worked all over the world, and had a visa here, so she was considered a US citizen. She also had a twin sister. They went back to italy when she was 1 years old. In 1938 when she was in her later 20's she said ok, war is coming, fuck this place, and came back to the US. At the time my father wasn't born yet, but she had my father's sister and older brother who were born in Italy. Dad's sister was allowed to leave with my grandmother, but not his brother, because of some frigging law of Mussolini that had a cut off date, and my father's brother was born 1 year before the cutoff, so he had to stay behind with my grandfather for a year. Meanwhile, my grandmother's twin fucked up and voted in some Italian election and lost her US citizenship, something my grandmother in her wisdom never did. I'm not sure who actually pulled her citizenship. It's possible Italy claimed her. The twin ended up staying behind and got the shit bombed out of her town in the war Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at January 26, 2025 12:43 AM (VwHCD) 475

Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at January 26, 2025 12:30 AM (N1N2P) This was many years ago - retired in 1984. The company I retired from stopped offering a pension plan in 2007, two years after I joined, so I just squeaked under the wire. Under the typical corporate pension plan, (I'm collecting from three different employers) after 5 years of service you qualified for a pension of 2% per year of your average salary for the last 5 years minus a social security offset. After 10 years of service you'd qualify for your full pension (based on years of service) payable starting at age 60. After 20 years of service the 2% dropped to 0.5% for each additional year. In practice it worked out to about 1.25% for each year of service. Posted by: Anonymous Rogue in Kalifornistan (ARiK) at January 26, 2025 12:49 AM (QGaXH) 479

I don’t know how true this is, but I’ve read Mr. Bill rescinded several XOs dating back to the Eisenhower/Truman era prohibiting communists from being employed by the federal government. Maybe Trump can fix that tomorrow or something. It would explain a lot, and let’s release all the FBI files on Congress, so we can see what kind of shitstains are impugning the integrity of all these nominees for the last 50 years or so.
