  • Computers were a mistake: UnitedHealth has confirmed the ransomware attack on its Change Healthcare unit last February affected around 190 million people in America — nearly double previous estimates. (Tech Crunch)

    That's... Rather a lot.
In its data breach notice, Change Healthcare said that the cybercriminals stole names and addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, email addresses, and government identity documents, which included Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, and passport numbers. The stolen health data also includes diagnoses, medications, test results, imaging, and care and treatment plans, as well as health insurance information . Change said the data also includes financial and banking information found in patient claims.
    So, basically, everything.
UnitedHealth's spokesperson said the company was "not aware of any misuse of individuals' information as a result of this incident and has not seen electronic medical record databases appear in the data during the analysis."
    But did you actually look?

Because the SSN isn't unique enough? I understand that many people share names (you could probably fill a stadium just with dudes named John Smith) but how much additional data do you really need to differentiate people? (This is all rhetorical, don't feel obligated to respond.)

10 If you're a United HealthCare customer you're pretty hosed by this latest breach.

The first thing I would do is go to each of the three major credit reporting agencies and freeze your credit as this will stop people from randomly opening up accounts. The downside with this is if you go to buy car and are getting a loan you will have to unfreeze your credit. The good news is all of this can be done online and it's not that difficult to do which was not the case 10 years ago.

The next one is to review your online accounts you have and if you have strong, unique passwords for each site. If you don't, you have some homework to do and at the same time you should set up any multi-factor authentication that you possibly can or pass keys if you want to torment yourself. This would be an ideal time to go through the hassle of setting up a password manager and then making it a habit to use it regularly.

I would also consider removing all credit card information from all online accounts unless it's absolutely essential that it be there.

After that, you're pretty much stuck with hopes and prayers that your identity doesn't get stolen.

Yeah, this is a nuclear bomb class data breach and I too, being a customer, am shuddering at the potential fallout. I've been through to many data breaches to count anymore. My approach has been to harden the ways I can be attacked and then hope for the best: Credit freezes, silo my data by using multiple email addresses, using a password manager so I can use extremely robust random passwords, apply multi-factor challenges wherever I can, removing credit card data where feasible, keeping an extremely sharp eye out for phishing emails, and mostly refusing all phone calls unless I knew who's calling me.

Unless you have a better plan, I kind of think they're a good idea. It is critical that you use a robust Password/passphrase for the master database. I don't use the online ones.

I use KeePass and it's been serving me well for over a decade. They provide something more than convenience too. They also force you to keep very good information about where you have an online presence. I use a standardized form for each entry in my database where I track things like account numbers, if I've set up multi-factor authentic, if they have my credit card information, and any other relevant information for that particular online site. If something goes fubar it's relatively quick for me to identify what I've got going on and make changes when necessary.

The downside, at least if you don't use an online password manager, is that you're unlike to KNOW what your passwords are so if anything happens to your computer then you're a bit fucked.

32 President Trump's visit to Los Angeles to light up the local communists yesterday was excellent. Those sons of bitches were planning on operating on a business's usual basis where they torment people with endless process so they could "keep people safe" instead of letting residents expedite getting back to normal by their own wits and skills. The local Communists were telling people it would be 18 months to get the permits to just remove the debris from their lots plus all the other permits to actually rebuild.

By the time Trump left Comrade Bass had committed to the loophole-filled goal of people can start removing debris within a week if possible. The rest of the comrades were equally not amused with President Trump. This is going to be a mess but the LA Communists are on notice business as usual is over. One of the more telling moments about where the population is headed is when Trump entered the briefing room. The place erupted into chants of USA! except for the dour Communists seated around him.

Good question.

Every time I read one of these hacking stories, I wonder: what was so great about going high tech? Whatever efficiencies it provides, it also makes us vulnerable -- we have no control over our personal information. You can be super careful, but because you need healthcare, you have to share detailed information, and then it doesn't matter what you do -- now lord knows how many people in all kinds of faraway places can get at it and steal your identity, etc.

There's even one, I forget which, that will change all your passwords at the touch of one button so you can swap passwords regularly - in case you're one of those people. Personally, I think a completely random string of 32 characters that is only used in one place is probably enough.

Las Cruces uses Ranked Choice Voting, more like Ranked Scam Voting, for its municipal elections. The results are much closer to being decided by penumbras and emanations than who actually got the most votes. To have a meaningful ballot you are forced to vote for candidates you want absolutely nothing to do with since a single vote for your preferred candidate when there is a plurality gets clobbered when all the fuckery gets applied. For me RCV is a scheme that makes it nearly impossible to get rid of an incumbent. Like not requiring ID to vote, RCV should be outlawed. Plus it is an opaque process that takes days to complete; that is license to steal an election.

77 As regards the ice emergency, we're being told I-10 is open throughout the city. But I dunno if the big bridge leading over the river, the one closest to me, is included in that. It had only one lane open in each direction yesterday afternoon. It took me 90 minutes to get home, usually a 35-minute drive; a flyover that leads to a surface avenue was closed, and the surface avenue was jammed. I took another route and was able to move swiftly to get home. But I don't know if I could use the bridge this morning to drive to the suburbs.

Better not to try, I guess. I have errands to run over here, and the car is filthy from dust, dirt, and dried snow.

This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says:

“In repentance and rest is your salvation,

Maybe it's because I attended Quaker meeting as an older teen and as a Freshman in college but quietness is important to me. We have several times of deliberate silence in our services. I got a logo for my car which I haven't put on yet and it is another phrase from the Bible, "Be still and know that I am God."

From what Trump said yesterday, it sounds like Grenell is going to be his liaison re: making sure assistance gets spent where it should be, etc.?

Breitbart's Joel Pollak, who was included in the live tv discussion, requested an oversight group to manage the money given for recovery to make sure the CA Democrats don't misspend it. Trump said Ric would be part of setting that up.

I got curious about that common word aghast and whether one could be ghast.
Here's what the Concise Oxford Dictionary says:

ghastly
n adjective (ghastlier, ghastliest)
1 causing great horror or fear; macabre.
2 deathly white or pallid.
3 informal very objectionable or unpleasant.

DERIVATIVES
ghastliness noun

ORIGIN
Middle English: from obsolete gast 'terrify', from Old English gæstan, of Germanic origin; related to (and influenced in spelling by) ghost.

So, same origin as ghost as a scary thing.

178 It took a year for county crews to scape 4-6 inches of toxic top soil after the CAMP wildfire burned Paradise and haul it away. Then log the dead dougfirs and cedar trees. *Fleets of double trailer dump trucks and logging trucks.

They also had to locate and prepare a place to dump that toxic dirt and debris.

Immediately post-fire regroups were escorted by county officials (a few hours) to sort through the household ashes.

The fire was so intense that County had specialists look for bone fragments/shards since very few intact skeletal remain were found.

182 G'morning Horde. Wow did I ever sleep in late. Good thing I don't have work today and could afford the extra time to catch up on sleep.

From Pixy's links, re the ACEMAGIC F3A: "Starting to wonder if there's only one company making the motherboard and multiple companies providing the cases and distribution, because these all look identical."

That's exactly what's happening, and it's across a ton of different products that are manufactured in China. They all copy each other.

I've been seeing this with tie clips and tie bars. The tie clips are all nearly an inch offset from the body on the squeeze-to-open end which sits too high and thus gets easily knocked around by the jacket (or knocked right off and lost) and the tie bars are all slippery metal on both sides, and easily slip off and are lost.

You just try to find a low profile tie clip like were common several decades ago. Good luck to you. China doesn't make those, because they're all copying the same tie-clip pattern across the board, same with the tie-bars.

If I were writing a First World Problems post, this would be my first one. ARGH!!

In those days people still knew what’s what, and the outcry was so strong they dropped the ad. Don’t be fooled.

230 Note well a “high trust” society is not just a nice thing to have. Civilization is not possible without it.

Somebody is going to have to have a high fear society. Will it be the society of people living their lives and being normal who live in fear, or the society of people who try to make a living by preying off of others?

231 McConnel sez Hegseth has no experience with a big budget. . . .

Speaking of budgets.... When has the last audit of the DoD been successful?

The National Defense Authorization Act of 2018 legally mandated the DoD to undergo annual audits across all components.

It failed its seventh one. The DoD never survived an audit.

In the meantime, Hegseth can simply ask DOGE to take a peek.

232 The good thing, Action Jackson will recuse herself before any cases on the court with this tranny shit.

After all, she doesn’t know what a woman is. Right?

234 I like how the members of the Senate many of whom could never pass a background check it must be noted (elected officials are “deemed” to have passed by virtue of being elected) weigh in on people who have passed.

Let the American people see FBI unredacted background checks before they are allowed to run for office.

238 "Starting to wonder if there's only one company making the motherboard and multiple companies providing the cases and distribution, because these all look identical.

Not bad, but identical."

That very well could be and in fact is entirely likely. Many digital artists will never admit it, but the only differences between a $2000 Wacom drawscreen tablet and a $1200 Huion one are the software and the slick logo that Wacom attaches a steep Apple tax for. But both tablets are from the same Shinzen manufacturing shop.

240 In the 1970s my Computer Science prof told me that computer programming was clerical work except for designing the user interfaces.

He was right.

I got my degree and went to law school.
