Hobby Thread - January 25, 2025 [TRex]

20250122-20250119-Jewelbracelet.jpg

Welcome hobbyists! Pull up a chair and sit a spell with the Horde in this little corner of the interweb. This is the mighty, mighty officially sanctioned Ace of Spades Hobby Thread and we are looking spiffy.

We gave the Ace of Spades Wheel of Hobbies(TM) a spin and the result shows the wisdom of the Wheel. It said HAND MADE JEWELRY. It also said some other things, so read below for more.

[Top Photo: From LadyL. This is a go to bracelet for me. It helps to keep me close to the Lord in stressful and discouraging times.]

***

The periodic table has 118 elements. Everything tangible on earth comes from some mix of those elements. Humans contain something like two dozen of those elements. Throw in the laws of physics and a divine touch and you've got yourself a world. It is remarkable to think about how many different ways those elements can be combined, formed and fashioned into what we see around us.

We wear clothes that are functional but reflect our personality. We add spice and personality with collectibles and hobbies. We surround ourselves with things that make us happy. We hold onto things that are sentimental or meaningful.

Things are often important to us because of how they came into our lives. A thing may be beautiful or functional on its own merits, but its importance is often not just the thing. It is the connection to people that we care about who gave it, made it, shared a memory with it, or otherwise had a touch to it.

That connection transforms an item into something worth more than the price tag. That connection gives value to a child's crayon drawing or macaroni art. That connection creates a silent union with that person, whether they are physically there with us or not. The tangible item takes on a deeper meaning for us in an intensely personal way.

Over the years, the Hobby Thread has hosted many stories of things created and built by the Horde. Many things have been built, given or received in honor of the silent union. This week is a jamboree of jewelry. Almost by definition, jewelry is intensely personal. We wear it or keep it near to us more than almost anything else we own. Those who make jewelry know this and their crafting becomes a way to create something that will become very personal.

[From Piper]

If the Horde is going to talk bout making jewelry on the Hobby Thread, this thread can go in only one direction. Jewell has created a lot of wearable art for a lot of Hordelings. Some has a Horde touch, some was custom designed, and some came from her former Etsy shop.

Those who know Jewell or have followed the Sunday Morning Prayer Thread know she has encountered medical challenges. May she feel comfort, strength and love from the Horde and know how much the Horde loves her. She should also know how many lives she has touched. The pieces are pretty on their own, but the personal connection makes each piece made by Jewell a treasure.

Every piece you see in this post was made by Jewell. Thanks much to the Horde for sharing photos of their treasures to make this post possible.

Special thanks to Ben Had for, well... you know...doing Ben Had things. You are a force of nature.

Full disclosure: there are a lot of photos here, so say a prayer for Pixy's hamsters to keep the post stable. If we start having trouble loading or refreshing for comments, let me know.

7 Those are nice.

I have bought homemade jewelry off the street. Our friend's adorable young children have had hot dog stands, sold cold water on a hot day during the town yard sale - and made over $120, homemade compost, arts and crafts and jewelry!!

Of course I bought several bracelets and necklaces. Very affordable. Tons of cuteness. Made at their roadside stand while you wait.

And never busted by the cops....

Oh, homemade bread. Four ingredients. Three bucks Canadian a loaf. Mom and I have been very good customers. Great kids.

I will second that. Meaningful jewelry, too.

I just came to the computer after welding on a safety railing for my painting scaffold. Smelled something burning, and it was me! My pants, anyway. Flying sparks ignited some shaggy cotton threads in my much-patched shop jeans. No serious damage.

24 The weird thing about the periodic table of the elements is that there are infinitely many elements, but only 118 are possible.

And even some of those only last minutes. Or seconds.

25 I have given away many more pieces from our Jewells than I got for myself. All appreciated and worn.

I do not buy jewelry with no meaning. Either I know the artist or I bought it in a special place.

I can tell you the significance of every piece I own.

And some of the pieces I have from Jewells mean the most to me.

26 I have had the opportunity to meet Jewells at the TXMOME a few times and have seen her hand-crafted jewelry first hand.

It's quite lovely. She's very talented.

Handcrafted artwork given away with purpose carries special meaning for both the donor and the recipient.

You can't put a price on that.

I've seen discussions of "islands of stability" beyond element 118, where it's theorized that truly exotic, stable materials might be found.

But the energy to synthesize them is far beyond anything we humans can create.

I have nicer, more meaningful ones bound together with wire I keep at home and handle with care. And I have some cheap ones made of thread I can put in a pocket and take on-the-go. They hold up surprisingly well, and are easy to repair, and if they fail catastrophically it’s no big loss. Our church usually has an abundance of the cheap ones, so easy to replace,

It was formally discovered in 2002. However, there was a false start where Lawrence Berkley National Lab thought they’d created it in the late 90s. It was on the newest periodic table posters in my high school (early aughts) but was unnamed.

I do have a lot of Jewells45 stories. FWIW, I was the first person in the horde to buy from her. I visited her in a craft show, and she spotted my wife first, wearing her Jewells45 fabricated necklace.

Her first trip to a MoMeet was a source of great anxiety for her family. "You are going to Texas to meet a unknown group from the Internet?" NaCly Dog is going too. "Even worse."

57 I have made many rosaries in my life. I made them for me, for friends, for gifts, and then for giving to the Bishop to distribute. There are lots of places online to order rosary findings and rosary kits. The lovely thing about them is that you can pray them while you make them, and then have them blessed by a priest, and then your prayers continue in someone else's hands. Some are beautiful and monetarily valuable, some are cheap and quick, but all of them point to Our Lady and Her Son. I will be very sad when my arthritis means I can't turn the wires properly anymore.

A couple of those pieces were freebies--the AoS keychain for example. I contacted her and said something like "You sent me something extra, how much is that?" and she said it was a gift. Customer loyalty, I guess.

I hope she's still making stuff. Her work is stunning.

I haven't paid attention to the periodic table of elements for quite a long time. When did it get up to 118? I'm sure it wasn't that many when I was younger.

Posted by: JTB

The number has advanced by fits and starts. Most of the recent additions have come from laboratories either in Russia (Dubna) or Germany (Darmstadt), or Japan if I recall correctly. Tennessine, Ts, atomic number 117 is the most recent addition, and that happened in 2010.

74 My last exposure to the periodic table was one of those pull down charts, like a window shade, in the classroom. It pulled down in front of the chalk board, same with a world map. Probably circa 1950s. Guess there have been a few changes since then.

75 I've worked on cancer wards and in cancer hospitals....the Hope bracelet for odddog's wife is spectacular, and would be a best seller in a hospital gift shop or online. And particularly if you know the artist who made it.....Priceless.

79 I will be very sad when my arthritis means I can't turn the wires properly anymore.
Posted by: tcn in AK

tcn I am a weirdo who loses count even with rosary(because I am so distractable).
But I recently discovered the concept of a slide rosary that lets one slide the bead so there's a gap between two beads. It's used for good deeds / little sacrifices beads.
Anyway, those only use cord or string, not wire. If you can't do wire anymore.

She is a long-suffering KC Chiefs fan, who is finally seeing the fruits of good coaching from Andy Reid and a cute [her words] quarterback in Mahomes.

I finally started watching them this year, and the team made the playoffs by a very narrow margins in every game. But lately, they have not turned the ball over, and even though they have more penalties than the other team, have overcome that.
