Fake Captain America Movie Tracking to Do About as Much Business as the Depths-of-Covid Flop "The Eternals"

I don't talk much about Marvel/Disney any longer because it's no longer relevant. It had its chance to course correct; it did not. It cannot be saved and no one even cares that it's dying any longer.

Tickets went on sale for Captain America: Brave New World on Friday. The movie does not feature Steve Rogers, but the Falcon taking over the role so that Marvel can say "We're so progressive we have a Black Captain America now."

And yeah, #CaptainAmerica: #BraveNewWorld had its pre-sales kickoff on FRI at US #BoxOffice!
After 2 days of pre-sales, although nowhere near #Quantumania which opened on the same weekend in 2023, #CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld is currently 1.4x better than #TheMarvels & #JokerFolieADeux, on par with #Eternals & not that far from #BlackWidow & #DunePartTwo after their first 2 days of pre-sales.

Quantumania was itself a bomb, and The Marvels and Joker 2 were huge bombs. Eternals was a bomb -- and it was released when theaters were still recovering from covid.

By the way, due to extensive and repeated reshoots, required due to poor test screenings, the cost of just filming this piece of crap is estimated at $350 million.

Some are saying it would have to make $900 million or a billion before it begins actually making money.

That Park Place:

The latest box office update for Captain America: Brave New World spells all-too-familiar trouble for Marvel Studios, as presale tickets are tracking just 1.4 times better than The Marvels and on par with The Eternals. While this may sound like a slight improvement on paper, it's a significant red flag for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
A Troubling Comparison to The Eternals
Released in 2021, The Eternals marked Marvel's first major financial failure, grossing just $164.9 million domestically and $237.2 million internationally for a worldwide total of $402 million.
The Eternals had a production budget of $236.2 million.
Brave New World faces a much steeper climb. With a rumored production budget between $350 and $375 million--over $100 million more than The Eternals at the lowest projection--this film could become a far bigger bomb even if it performs similarly at the box office. After factoring in marketing costs, which often equal the production budget, and theater cuts of ticket sales, the movie would need to exceed $900 million globally to break even according to some projections.
Based on current reports, Brave New World is unlikely to hit that target.
Box Office Projections Confirm the Decline
As previously reported, opening weekend projections for Brave New World are estimated to land between $81 million and $107 million with a median figure of $96 million. Many outlets are quick to point out that the film is tracking similarly to 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as if that's a positive.
It's not.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier opened domestically at $95 million and grossed $259.7 million at home. Adjusted for inflation, The Winter Soldier's opening weekend climbs to $126.6 million and its domestic haul to $356 million--both far beyond what Brave New World is tracking to achieve.
Even worse, ticket prices have increased dramatically since 2014, when the average movie ticket was $8.14. Now, with an average ticket price of $10.78, even matching The Winter Soldier's $95 million opening weekend would mean far fewer people are watching Brave New World.
These numbers paint a dire picture for the once-reliable Captain America franchise.

Don't worry: Marvel has a HUGE selling point for this movie. You see, this movie will be the debut of the famous Marvel character Red Hulk.

Who's Red Hulk, you ask? Well he was made up in the past 10 or 12 years. You see, he's just like the Hulk, except, and this is gonna blow your mind, he's... Red. And he's violent and destructive. (You know -- like the actual Hulk.)

Are you excited now? They did a color swap on The Hulk!

Oh, and even better, people say that this Red Hulk is in the movie for "about five minutes."

Marvel could have just re-cast Iron Man and Captain America. Just like the James Bond series did. The James Bond people didn't say, "Oh, Sean Connery is retiring, let's have a black agent, 009, take over for him." No, they just recast, because the character was key.

Marvel has been pushing a woke agenda. They are very embarrassed that most of their most popular characters, created in decades past before we realized that Diversity is Our Strength and the country was 75%+ white, were white.

So Marvel attempted in the comics -- where it failed -- and then in the movies -- where it's failing now -- to implement the "Mantle Strategy." The theory was, it's not the characters who matter, it's just the mantle. The superhero identity. The costume. We can just replace all of our old, unfashionable white characters with race-and-genderswapped replacements. As long as they're wearing the old costume, the audience will never notice the difference.

So the "All New All Different" era replaced Bruce Banner with Amadeus Cho, a teenage Asian, and called it "Totally Awesome Hulk." (No, really, google it.) Iron Man was replaced with a black teenage girl genius (of course) called "Iron Heart." Sam Wilson, the Falcon, took over as Captain America.

Etc., etc., etc.

Like I said, Marvel already ran this experiment, and it failed. Bigtime. Customers rejected the "Mantle Strategy."

But Kevin Fiege is a stupid, weak liberal manlet who was convinced I can make it work. I am the True White Savior.

Nope!

Meanwhile, Hollywood is burning and I don't just mean literally.

Sources I consulted, ranging from studio executives to hitmaking producers and high-level talent managers as well as on-set crew members (most of whom spoke on condition of anonymity), predict Hollywood will generally become more self-censoring and less capable of critiquing the current political moment, if not less influential overall.
"Hollywood doesn't matter as much as it thinks it matters," says a talent manager with A-list clients. "You had the biggest stars in the world support Kamala Harris. She couldn't have drawn more powerful advocates. And it didn't move the needle. What does that tell you? It's unsettling because the people and things you hold in high esteem don't drive the culture. As much as I love movies, they aren't the driver anymore."
Will any "culture of resistance" (as when United Talent Agency organized a celeb-packed rally to protest the so-called Muslim ban in 2017) persist? One corporate strategist with interests across film and television described the feeling around town as "preemptive exhaustion." Hollywood is plagued by a sense of doom precipitated not just by financial anxieties but a feeling that a pervasive "woke is broke" mindset will affect what we see on our screens in the coming years

"The movement away from 'woke' was already in motion even before Trump got re-elected," says a blockbuster producer, who points to two of the three movies in the last Star Wars trilogy (The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker) and several recent Marvel movies (Eternals, The Marvels), all of which underperformed at the box office, backdropped by a din of fanboy complaints about "forced diversity." "We've been seeing the departure of executives at the studios that had been hired to promote DEI in film and TV. Hollywood had swung too far left over the past few years and there was bound to be a reckoning."
Perhaps not coincidentally, Trump's reelection comes at the tail end of a year when the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion--bashing Am I Racist?, produced by the Daily Wire, prevailed as 2024's highest-grossing documentary. (Shortly after Participant Media -- the production company known for tough-minded, issue-driven docs like The Cove and An Inconvenient Truth -- abruptly shuttered.) 2024 was also the year Twisters achieved blockbusterdom with a pronounced red-state aesthetic breaking through with audiences in the middle and southern portions of the U.S. Yet it would be a mistake to expect a right-wing reboot entirely. To hear it from several studio and production-company bosses, overt politics simply don't sell. "There isn't a strong desire for rhetorical storytelling in Hollywood," says one production exec. "In certain corners of the entertainment world, there's suddenly this opportunity for conservative-minded viewers to see a bit of their world represented. But I don't know if it's necessarily going to be a flip to the other side of the equation."

In a more pressing example of what's to come in 2025, there is Marvel's Captain: America: Brave New World, which before June 2023 was titled Captain America: New World Order. (The change was taken as an implicit response to the IRL "New World Order" conspiracy theory gaining traction in right-wing extremist corners of the internet; it posits the existence of a secret global elite conspiring to implement a totalitarian one-world government.) Early test screenings of Brave New World, which hits theaters February 14, were reportedly disastrous, prompting expensive reshoots with major sequences cut from the film. According to a technical crew member on the film with knowledge of both the screenings and the reshoot process (which also took place last year), the character portrayed by Harrison Ford -- Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, a demagogic military leader who morphs into an irrational, orange-hued superhuman -- created unforeseen political resonances for the studio in an inaugural year.
"He's this very powerful general who becomes kind of a fascist and turns into a raging Red Hulk. That was seen as an allusion to Trump," this source explains. "Disney was realizing, Hey, we've been bleeding for a while. Let's try not to piss off our core base anymore than we have been over the past couple of years."

I've been hearing that the test screenings went poorly due to one particular plot point, which they've reshot the movie to avoid. They might have taken out President Red Hulk's imposition of a fascist dictatorship.

Or maybe they didn't. Who cares? I'm not going to watch it.

This is why comics and anything long form tends to have this limiting effect.

The new stuff becomes obviously not at all new, the only people it appeals to being those really, REALLY invested in tiny details.

40 I personally always thought Steve Rogers wasn't himself a compelling character. It was his alter-ego Captain America that was interesting, although even then not particularly high on the list of Interesting Super Heroes.

So of all the race-swapped characters, a black Captain America could work. Could. A prime Carl Weathers or Wesley Snipes could pull it off. But the guy they have to play the role -- Anthony Mackie -- never did anything for me. Always came off as a whining soy-boy to me.

41 Basically the problem is Marvel had all these movies in the can -- Ironheart for literally years -- or being developed over the last 3-4 years, and everything has changed. Now the public has no interest in this crap and even if the HAVE changed direction and learned their lesson (more on that in a moment) they can't show it for years.

Captain Falcon was reshot entirely twice at least, its gonna be more expensive than the Flash was, over 400 million to make by its all said and done. That means they need to pull in 700 million or more just to break even and they'll be lucky to make what they spent on filming it.

I liked the Falcon, I thought he was a solid character. But turning him into Captain America didn't work in the comics and it feels like lame DEI hand me down. Like Gary on Nerdrotic says, he looks like a kid came up with his costume on City of Heroes. "he has a shield, and wings, and goggles, and armor, and..."

As for learning their lesson? One of the best actress Oscar nominees... is a dude. And he was picked after Trump won.

55 Anthony Mackie -- never did anything for me

He's fine in the role of Falcon but he's not anyone who can star in and lead a movie. And the Falcon and Winter Soldier Disney+ series made his character really unlikable.

James Gunn is pulling some random, weird looking one for Nathan Fillion to play in the new Superman. Got a blonde bowl-cut or something.

He's a guy from the 80s created to be a foil for Batman and comedy relief in the Justice League International comic series. He was great in that, but Guy Gardner is basically just James Gunn's voice who can make fun of Superman for wearing his underwear on the outside. And the haircut is just... wrong.

Same problem I have with Robert Downey Jr playing Doc Doom... unless its all CGI all the time... just dont' see it.

My wife and I just had this discussion yesterday.

Hollywood has become the "Christian Publishing" version of itself.

Growing up in the church, there was a LOT of really bad books, stories, music, etc... that tried to be exactly the same as the secular world, but with a Christian message.

The results were generally terrible. HOWEVER, at least their goal was the message. They were more interested in teaching than entertaining. They also didn't make much money, but were fine with that.

Hollywood wants to the the secular version of those Christian books, but also wants to make money. They DO want to "teach" but get really angry no one wants to pay to be preached at. Just like the Christian knock-offs, the results are generally terrible, because if "lesson" supersedes "story" your story is going to suck. (With a very few exceptions made by exceptional people.)

Steve Rogers was the opposite of Tony Stark...and yet with the same absolute certainty he's always right. It made for good "butting heads" in the comics and a good balance of leads for the Avengers team...

Red (not orange) Hulk was one of soon a host of variant Hulks in the comics, the first of them. He gets hotter and burns things when he gets angry, seemed lame to me from the beginning. When he was revealed to be Thunderbolt Ross, a lot of people who initially liked him turned on the character.

I think there was some comic "what if" type title that had a "what if Tony Stark became Dr. Doom" type alternate reality.

My guess is that's the direction it goes in. I can't imagine they just have Downey play an entirely new Marvel character that has nothing to do with Iron Man

I was in CA at the time and I thought they were f-ing nuts. I knew a lot of Asians and they all watched Chinese historical dramas/propaganda on VHS and DVD. (and later Korean)

China played them. China limited what Hollywood could show in country and with that tiny bit of leverage they controlled everything the big studios produced. They were all working toward that day the market was open and they could make real money, but they were too stupid to understand they were being made redundant and corrupt.

That... would be a hard question to address. Tolkien was trying to write a mythology for England, so... Yeah Carcharoth would come first, in my head. That is First Age which is essentially 'Time of the Gods'.

I think I see what they are going to do. Fantastic Four is in a different universe (bleh multiverse, etc) set in the 1960s in their new movie. In that alternate universe, Tony Stark is going to go bad for some reason related to Reed Richards, and they all will end up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe proper at some point. Somehow both Mole Man and Galactus are going to be villains in the movie. Plus they will try to shoehorn in a bunch of origins because of course they always do.

I came to the opposite conclusion, that Fenris came first. For mainly two reasons. One, JRR was influenced by the Norse legends, so it made sense his stories would come "after" the Norse. Two, there's evidence that Odin was known among ancient Germanic tribes like 9,000 years ago. I think most ppl put the events of Silmarillion about 6,000 years ago.

143 Hollyweird is a primary driver of gun control. I've been boycotting them since Terminator 2. I bit the bullet once and went to stupid jar jar binks star wars with my kid for one reason. He was the same age I was when my dad took me to Star Wars. He went and saw the rest with friends.
If I do watch anything they do now it's a borrowed DVD in my home.
It's really sad. I went to at least one movie every weekend as a kid.
I loved going to them and the cinema was a major hangout for the whole town. They are all closed now and there is some Imax thing that is always nearly empty near a casino.
These number Hollyweird is posting are not any sort of indicator of how many peolple actually see the movie. It's all inflation.

I don't trust Gunn to handle an uplifting heroic and aspirational hero like Superman, but he's effective at emotional manipulation like Spielberg is, so we'll see.

Really the problem is that the people writing the stories know nothing of virtue and what actual heroism is so they can't write it. It's just as hard to write a truly morally good and virtuous character when you are yourself not good and virtuous as it is to write an intelligent character when you're an idiot.

Part of that problem is poor planning. And that is driven by CGI - "fix it in post!" Only, post costs a fortune.

The magic of Hollywood was how much they could achieve with very little. now, with tossing great big piles of money at every problem, it has drained the creativity right out of the industry.

Spend less, WAY less on making movies. Capt. America should be made for $100 million - TOPS. Make it a cool spy movie, and the action confined to a lot of hand to hand with talented stunt men. Maybe one big effects piece at the end. That's what the winter soldier did and it was perfect.

The real problem is lack of quantity. It used to be demand was high so studios put out lots of stuff - drek, horror, filler movies of romance, cowboys, war movies and extravaganzas and epics on the high end. There was lots of variety, lots of cheap movies for actors and directors and writers to develop on,

Now most every movie is far too expensive with the cost of many of the aspects of movie making actually getting cheaper. They need to have movies for a 50000 dollar budget rather than 250 million. Then make hundreds of them a year and see who wins out.

You can already get a laptop-power computer, no fan in a tiny box about the size of 4 bread slices stacked up. With USB or other fast serial buses the old addin cards are obsolte. I didn't open my last several 'desktop' PC.

They are pretty cheap, 300 dollars or so for a good box.

Yes, I'd recommend it, but with some big caveats.
It's too long: 3-1/2 hours including a 15 minute intermission.
It could have been a lot shorter because there were too many soap opera elements to the plot.
I love historical fiction, especially the WWII era. This felt like a story based on true events, but it's not.
Finally the sexual content was pretty explicit. It could have been done much more tastefully or simply eliminated.

I don't think there was any huge symbology there. The two trees were replaced by the Sun and Moon once they were built.

The Silmarils were just a memory box for the combined light of both trees. Even its evil damaging powers developed slowly, as the fact that when the sons of Feanor recovered one it was a shock to them that it burned them too.

Sci-fi started getting weird when they added layers of dysfunction. You had stargate SG1, and stargate atlantis, both great. Then they do stargate universe and fill the ship up with back stabbing fuckups. They remake Battlestar Galactica, and yup, a ship full of back stabbing fuck ups. It even hit star trek enterprise, which is why that crashed and burned.

412 I haven't been to the movies in 20 years. I haven't missed anything. Most movies are geared to the IQs of things that need to be watered every three days. Hollywood's idea of romantic is a trip to Boy's Town. A hero usually wears a B cup. Sorry I am nor missing anything.
