Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Fake Captain America Movie Tracking to Do About as Much Business as the Depths-of-Covid Flop "The Eternals"I don't talk much about Marvel/Disney any longer because it's no longer relevant. It had its chance to course correct; it did not. It cannot be saved and no one even cares that it's dying any longer. Tickets went on sale for Captain America: Brave New World on Friday. The movie does not feature Steve Rogers, but the Falcon taking over the role so that Marvel can say "We're so progressive we have a Black Captain America now." Ticket sales aren't great:FernandoQuantumania was itself a bomb, and The Marvels and Joker 2 were huge bombs. Eternals was a bomb -- and it was released when theaters were still recovering from covid. By the way, due to extensive and repeated reshoots, required due to poor test screenings, the cost of just filming this piece of crap is estimated at $350 million. Some are saying it would have to make $900 million or a billion before it begins actually making money. That Park Place: Don't worry: Marvel has a HUGE selling point for this movie. You see, this movie will be the debut of the famous Marvel character Red Hulk. Who's Red Hulk, you ask? Well he was made up in the past 10 or 12 years. You see, he's just like the Hulk, except, and this is gonna blow your mind, he's... Red. And he's violent and destructive. (You know -- like the actual Hulk.) Are you excited now? They did a color swap on The Hulk! Oh, and even better, people say that this Red Hulk is in the movie for "about five minutes." Marvel could have just re-cast Iron Man and Captain America. Just like the James Bond series did. The James Bond people didn't say, "Oh, Sean Connery is retiring, let's have a black agent, 009, take over for him." No, they just recast, because the character was key. Marvel has been pushing a woke agenda. They are very embarrassed that most of their most popular characters, created in decades past before we realized that Diversity is Our Strength and the country was 75%+ white, were white. So Marvel attempted in the comics -- where it failed -- and then in the movies -- where it's failing now -- to implement the "Mantle Strategy." The theory was, it's not the characters who matter, it's just the mantle. The superhero identity. The costume. We can just replace all of our old, unfashionable white characters with race-and-genderswapped replacements. As long as they're wearing the old costume, the audience will never notice the difference. So the "All New All Different" era replaced Bruce Banner with Amadeus Cho, a teenage Asian, and called it "Totally Awesome Hulk." (No, really, google it.) Iron Man was replaced with a black teenage girl genius (of course) called "Iron Heart." Sam Wilson, the Falcon, took over as Captain America. Etc., etc., etc. Like I said, Marvel already ran this experiment, and it failed. Bigtime. Customers rejected the "Mantle Strategy." But Kevin Fiege is a stupid, weak liberal manlet who was convinced I can make it work. I am the True White Savior. Nope! Meanwhile, Hollywood is burning and I don't just mean literally. Hollywood Braces for a 'Masks Off' Trump Era "There's more fear in the executive suites now than there ever has been."Are you psyched about Red Hulk yet, bigots? I've been hearing that the test screenings went poorly due to one particular plot point, which they've reshot the movie to avoid. They might have taken out President Red Hulk's imposition of a fascist dictatorship. Or maybe they didn't. Who cares? I'm not going to watch it. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

====== This is why comics and anything long form tends to have this limiting effect. The new stuff becomes obviously not at all new, the only people it appeals to being those really, REALLY invested in tiny details. "RED HULK is so different from regular HULK! Basically the problem is Marvel had all these movies in the can -- Ironheart for literally years -- or being developed over the last 3-4 years, and everything has changed. Now the public has no interest in this crap and even if the HAVE changed direction and learned their lesson (more on that in a moment) they can't show it for years.
Captain Falcon was reshot entirely twice at least, its gonna be more expensive than the Flash was, over 400 million to make by its all said and done. That means they need to pull in 700 million or more just to break even and they'll be lucky to make what they spent on filming it. I liked the Falcon, I thought he was a solid character. But turning him into Captain America didn't work in the comics and it feels like lame DEI hand me down. Like Gary on Nerdrotic says, he looks like a kid came up with his costume on City of Heroes. Growing up in the church, there was a LOT of really bad books, stories, music, etc... that tried to be exactly the same as the secular world, but with a Christian message. The results were generally terrible. HOWEVER, at least their goal was the message. They were more interested in teaching than entertaining. They also didn't make much money, but were fine with that. Hollywood wants to the the secular version of those Christian books, but also wants to make money. They DO want to "teach" but get really angry no one wants to pay to be preached at. Unforeseen? Seriously? And to whom, pray tell, could an evil, orange-hued man be an allusion? It's a mystery
Red (not orange) Hulk was one of soon a host of variant Hulks in the comics, the first of them. He gets hotter and burns things when he gets angry, seemed lame to me from the beginning. When he was revealed to be Thunderbolt Ross, a lot of people who initially liked him turned on the character. A lot of chicanery with money passing from the right hand to the left, to the right, to the left, and ending in the right hand. Kind of like that episode with Beavis & Butthead being sent to fundraise with chocolate bars. I was in CA at the time and I thought they were f-ing nuts. I knew a lot of Asians and they all watched Chinese historical dramas/propaganda on VHS and DVD. (and later Korean) China played them. China limited what Hollywood could show in country and with that tiny bit of leverage they controlled everything the big studios produced. Tobey Maguire's Spiderman was a great movie because his character had an arc. The last five (?) ten (?) I think I see what they are going to do. Fantastic Four is in a different universe (bleh multiverse, etc) set in the 1960s in their new movie. In that alternate universe, Tony Stark is going to go bad for some reason related to Reed Richards, and they all will end up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe proper at some point. Somehow both Mole Man and Galactus are going to be villains in the movie. Plus they will try to shoehorn in a bunch of origins because of course they always do. I came to the opposite conclusion, that Fenris came first. For mainly two reasons. One, JRR was influenced by the Norse legends, so it made sense his stories would come "after" the Norse. Two, there's evidence that Odin was known among ancient Germanic tribes like 9,000 years ago. I think most ppl put the events of Silmarillion about 6,000 years ago.
Posted by: Elric The Blade at January 24, 2025 04:44 PM (iFTx/) Yeah, but. The Silmarillion encompasses the creation of the Earth. The separation of Earth from Heaven. Like three different lighting schemes (Lamps, Trees, and then finally the Sun.) As Prof Squirrel says, it also is like comparing apples and oranges. They are supposed to be the same, but are also wildly different. Posted by: Aetius451AD at January 24, 2025 04:46 PM (bss/y) 149

Gonna geek pedant here for a moment. The original Hulk when he first showed up was gray. The boring answer is that people are bored of the super hero movie script. Everything has escalated too much, the stakes are unrecognizable and the movies always follow the same structure (this isn't just Marvel, btw). I've been hearing that the test screenings went poorly due to one particular plot point, which they've reshot the movie to avoid. They might have taken out President Red Hulk's imposition of a fascist dictatorship.
Or maybe they didn't. Who cares? I'm not going to watch it. --- I was gonna say, snarkily, "I'm sure it has a great plot, right?" These super hero movies are as exhausting in their predictability. And it ties in to the last post: Because Hollywood has also been captured by these Woketavists who have zero fucking real-world jobs or experience but are cock-sure they know how to do everything. And it's not just super hero movies--either I've seen too many movies or the plots have gotten embarrassingly predictable Posted by: People's Hippo Voice at January 24, 2025 04:57 PM (2k0oQ) 224

I was looking for the Steve Rogers "I got that reference!" gif the other day and it made me nostalgic for "The Avengers." It's not my favorite movie, but I think it was a good superhero movie. Everyone makes fun of the dialogue because it's cliche now, then immediately quotes their favorite line. ("Doth Mother knowest thou weareth her drapes?")

The boring answer is that people are bored of the super hero movie script. Everything has escalated too much, the stakes are unrecognizable and the movies always follow the same structure (this isn't just Marvel, btw).

Everyone wants to do Whedon dialogue (which is just shitty, lower brow version of an old Thin Man or His Girl Friday.) But most of them suck.
Yeah between Whedon's omnicharacter snark millennial voice and Gunn's "everything is a joke but we all hate each other" tone, Marvel decided that's the universal template for every movie from then on. No matter what the story, no matter what the scene, no matter what the tone, someone always has the zinger, sounding exactly like everyone else. Guess who? Susan Doniz. The CIO who was fired from Boeing in mid December. Boeing employees actively cheered the announcement of her being fired. She is woke. She largely oversaw putting people of color up the chain who had no ability to perform in those positions... because thats how the C-suite at Boeing gets their bonus. She speaks about as good as Kamala Harris. She ran their IT into the ground. Her "transformation" of IT was to haphazardly send all the work to an outsourced supplier and then casually forget to include half the scope. She then disappeared for 4 years like a bad fart, except to appear every now and then to drop inplausible and unexplainable cost cutting measures (layoffs, layoffs, and send more work to India, which can't be done in India, because----you know....ITAR). She spent most of her time jet-setting to conferences selling her resume but was ever so clueless she held an all hands 3 days before her firing and made no mention of her pending departure. Best of luck to Disney IT. I hear they are full of woke anti-white racists, so enjoy your layoffs. Posted by: SoUglyIBrokeTheLookingGlass at January 24, 2025 05:01 PM (yf5/z) 250

--- You know, it did work for characters like The Green Lantern. But that was because it was built into the character from the start. One of the biggest problems in Hollywood isn't bad movie (though that is a problems) it is that movies cost too fucking much to make.
Part of that problem is poor planning. And that is driven by CGI - "fix it in post!" Only, post costs a fortune. The magic of Hollywood was how much they could achieve with very little. now, with tossing great big piles of money at every problem, it has drained the creativity right out of the industry. Spend less, WAY less on making movies. Capt. America should be made for $100 million - TOPS. Make it a cool spy movie, and the action confined to a lot of hand to hand with talented stunt men. Maybe one big effects piece at the end. That's what the winter soldier did and it was perfect. Posted by: El Mariachi at January 24, 2025 05:07 PM (nLFEI) 277

As usual with comics and things based on comics though they didn't really give it a full think through.
Ironically, the point of those series was the reaction to the consequences and implications of superheroes in ordinary comics. They said "but what if you really followed through on this idea, and why doesn't anyone bring this up??" as the basis of stuff like Injustice. But then like you say... And yeah, as joe says above: they cannot believe in or understand heroism. Its alien to their relativist ideology. So they can't write it, either. I mean they COULD if they were talented and thoughtful enough, but they don't want to. So, Three Silmarils (which the three rings for elves mirrored.) One is recovered from the Iron Crown Morgoth made for them (he had to do that because the Simarils burned him.) The ultimate example of this was a silver age Batman comic in which Alfred dies. For real, not a clone, not a disguised person, actually his butler Alfred dies. There was lots of variety, lots of cheap movies for actors and directors and writers to develop on, Now most every movie is far too expensive with the cost of many of the aspects of movie making actually getting cheaper. Posted by: mugiwara It's incredible how the various vectors for Marvel can't get synchronized and keep fucking each other over. When the Marvel movies were big, that's when they decide to make comic book Iron Man a black teen girl, Thor a girl, etc, resulting in even worse comic sales when they could have been booming. Marvel Rivals is the hottest game right now, and there are new comics to capitalize on it...but this movie has nothing to do with the game, and is another character swap at the worst time. As opposed to Black Lightning, Blade, Black Panther, etc etc etc, who apparently never existed before Captain African American. One of the biggest lies that the left pushes is this concept of "represenatation." As a life-long white dude, I have enjoyed heroes such as Shaft, Ripley from Aliens, Zorro, and Jackie Chan despite not looking like any of them. Its hard to believe but I'm not built like Arnold Schwarzenegger nor as able as James Bond but somehow I find myself able to enjoy their movies and find things to aspire to and see as heroic in them. Representation is the idea that people are reduced to simple categories, without nuance or complexity. Its the concept that we're all mindless interchangeable drones in identity groups defined by the group. Its a stupid lie and I wish people would push back on it. Hollywood just don't think outside of the box anymore. I like sci-fi, and other than star trek, and star wars, and aliens, I think the last time they truly came up with something original and out of the box was the movie Stargate, or Event Horizon.

Little Marco is going to (cue up Van Halen) Panama.
I read a good piece the other day about what's really going on. All it is to scare Panama into shaping up about Chicom control of the ports. Rather than starting out with that, you got full "We're gonna take you over and invade!". Then, getting out of be with the Chicoms is but a small thing. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at January 24, 2025 05:28 PM (w6EFb) I'm pretty sure the same is true for the Greenland thing. Just let the world know, bigfooting American-style doesn't have to be about killing foreign people in lands nobody cares about. It is... and SHOULD be, about trade, and being the biggest market in the world, we SHOULD be dictating terms to everybody. Posted by: BurtTC at January 24, 2025 05:32 PM (Kcvhc) 379
Went to see The Brutalist.
Yes, I'd recommend it, but with some big caveats. It's too long: 3-1/2 hours including a 15 minute intermission. It could have been a lot shorter because there were too many soap opera elements to the plot. I love historical fiction, especially the WWII era. This felt like a story based on true events, but it's not. Finally the sexual content was pretty explicit. It could have been done much more tastefully or simply eliminated. Why did the light of TWO Trees get divided/combined within THREE Silmarils?
What symbology am I missing here? Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at January 24, 2025 05:01 PM (7fElN) I think one was a trans Silmaril. And the ghost of JRRT is making obscene gestures at me as we speak. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at January 24, 2025 05:26 PM (W5ArC) I don't think there was any huge symbology there. The two trees were replaced by the Sun and Moon once they were built. The Silmarils were just a memory box for the combined light of both trees. Even its evil damaging powers developed slowly, as the fact that when the sons of Feanor recovered one it was a shock to them that it burned them too. Posted by: Oldcat at January 24, 2025 05:40 PM (n7h9X) Sci-fi started getting weird when they added layers of dysfunction. You had stargate SG1, and stargate atlantis, both great.
