President Trump Goes to Hollywood

hollywood hugg.jpg

Trump and Newsom share Hollywood hug
after LA fires

Wonder how Newsom felt at that moment?

Yesterday, Friday, was the last business day of the new Trump Presidency, and I was already sort of overwhelmed by everything that he had done. At home, my internet connection was sort if iffy, and I lost the page with my links for the week up until Thursday. Naturally.

On Friday morning, we had an appointment in Fresno and listened to a talk radio station on the way up. A guest they had scheduled for the morning (a congressman, I think - didn't recognize the name) had to re-schedule because he would be traveling with the President to North Carolina and California!

The main conclusion I took from that morning, listening to the banter on the radio, was that the country was becoming divided into (1) people who understood that Donald Trump often presented proposals in terms one might expect if one had read his book The Art of the Deal and (2) people who did not understand this.

Elsewhere (somewhere in my lost links), Walter Kirn referred to the President's statements concerning things like changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America as "chew-bones" to keep the press (and others) busy while he was doing real negotiations.

*

On our way home, we stopped for lunch at VDH's favorite hometown restaurant and saw about 10 young, competent-looking military types, mostly dressed in black, hanging out in the parking lot. One was wearing a Cal Fire jacket. Don't know who they were, but we had heard on the radio that Fresno would be a staging area for helicopters in case they were needed for the Hughes Fire near Castaic.

There is also a possibility that these young men were connected in some way with this organization:

Newsom's judgment has been weird about a multitude of issues, great and small.

*

On our way home, we caught President Trump's opening remarks on the radio in his public forum with Governor Newsom, Mayor Bass and others concerning the fires. He was quite gracious in his introductions of the people in the meeting. Then came some commentary like this:

Lizzy in an earlier thread:

Clip of Trump confronting Bass about making people wait 18 mos to clear their property

Bass starts interrupting him, claiming it's about safety to wait "we think one week" - - and then Daryl Issa reaches over and takes her mic while Trump responds! Didn't notice that last night - heh.

Second thread:

This week has been unbelievable. I cannot believe all the good things that are happening.

Looks like it was a productive trip for President Trump.

Other Issues

Stephen A Smith stuns the Bill Maher crowd into silence as he articulates how Democrats have no one left fighting for the American people:
SAS: "The man was impeached twice, he was convicted on 34 felony counts. The American people still said 'He's closer to normal than what we're seeing on the left.'
He's saying 'I kept my promise'

Then you turn around and look at the left and you say 'What promises did you keep?'

What voter can look at the Democrat party and say 'There's a voice for us, somebody who speaks for us, that goes up on Capitol Hill and fights the fights that we want them fighting on our behalf. They didn't do that. That's why their behinds are home, and that man is back in the White House.

He's doing what he said he was going to do."

The American people said 'We'll take the supposed 'felon' over the woman who is telling us men can get pregnant'.

Walter Kirn and Matt Taibbi did one of their podcasts at the time of the inauguration. Kirn sort of scared Taibbi, the Free Speech guy, sometimes. Remember that these guys are not exactly conservatives. Kirn's current "X" feed is pretty interesting. Example.

But from earlier in the week, here's the podcast:

Steven Hayward: The Week in Pictures: 100 Hours That Shook the World

The time has come when someone can write a sequel to John Reed’s famous book about the Bolshevik Revolution, Ten Days That Shook the World. The title is obvious: 100 Hours That Shook the World. I could include a longish subtitle, as is the fashion these days with trade book publishing. I suggest: “How Donald Trump Broke Five Decades of Leftist Drift, Crushed the Democratic Party, and Drove Liberals Out of What Little of Their Minds They Had in the First Place.” Strap in and pour yourself a deep mug: this week’s edition is another long epic.

I know how Trump felt. "But first...."

I haven't seen anything more on the conditions Trump is said to have set for Federal reconstruction money to CA (come on, you knew it was going to happen). These included approval of more water infrastructure, and, most importantly, required photo ID for voting. We'll see just where Newsom's priorities lie.

Any rightward movement of the Overton window as to possibilities in policymaking influences others. So Smith might still vote D but his criticisms might lead other softer D's cover to move rightward in voting.

Same as statement against interests--it is more powerful for a D voter to tell the truth to their side than for a R voter to tell blue voters what is wrong with them.

Her concern is authentic, she gently placed her arm around the shoulders of one of the women who told the horror story of the day/night of the storm. And it was authentic.
My entire life I've watched politicians fake their concern for the common man, in an obvious ploy to win votes. That has devolved to not even showing up to make a difference...just use Big Tech to gaslight the masses into thinking you care.

This is such a departure...and I doubt we will ever see it again. Maybe to a lesser degree if Vance becomes President.

Trump said she wanted to join him on the trip, because she is really concerned about the survivors of both disasters.

If Trump fired them for cause (i.e. misconduct, there is no thirty days needed). Plus, the law that the Pelosi Congress passed in 2022 is now under shakier constitutional grounds as to Congress applying limits to presidential personnel decisions.

Supreme Court has been moving to shore up presidential authority over executive branch officers in a train of cases recently even under Biden.

14000 reported documents would outlast One Thousand and One Nights. Anything left after Deep State scouring on JFK's assassination is likely to be piecemeal assembly of odd facts not supporting the Warren Commission verdict. They have had since 2017 when the law passed to eliminate any documents that would definitively point fingers at who did it and who ordered it done.

I actually think more clarity will come from the MLK and RFK documents as to Deep State involvement of the FBI and the CIA.

128 Congress needs to mandate e-verify for every single business that files a federal tax form. They need to mandate steep penalties for not filing. They also need to ensure that illegal immigrants are not eligible for any federal benefits. That includes when they try to use an anchor baby as their meal ticket. A bit of a comparison with Winston Churchill, even when Winston was purposefully kept out of office in the decade before WWII, Winston had developed ties from his previous stints in Cabinet that kept him well informed about what the different ministries were doing and what information was being suppressed and by whom.

In question time, Baldwin and later Chamberlain kept finding themselves relatively uninformed compared to Churchill's pointed cross examination questions. These questions demonstrated how much both PMs and their cabinet ministers did not care to know or simply lied to the people about the growing German threat.

Not all times in the political wilderness are unfruitful.

Policy failure in this case was marked by gigantic smoke signals that something was wrong. Especially after CA had a very rainy and heavy snowpack year prior. Most government policy failures are buried in statistics like failure to educate kids, failure to keep criminals at bay, etc.

This one literally had a massive pall of smoke for the failure so big you could see it from space.

148 Mike Johnson this week recalled a meeting with Biden shortly after he issued the EO banning LNG exports. He claimed Biden didn't even remember signing it.

Biden reminds me of 'Mr. Gower' in the Pottersville bar scene in 'It's a Wonderful Life' where he's a rummy trying to panhandle in the bar rather than a respected druggist.

As the Biden administration (thankfully) fades into the distance I find myself pitying Biden, more than despising him. It occurs to me that whatever 'cabal' was behind all the craziness the last four years, they realized their guy was impaired and rather than doing the right thing which would have been engineering some sort of graceful exit, instead used him as a tool to implement their radical agenda. They'd have him sign off on their crazy agenda then leave him to face mockery and disdain of the people.

149 The agency was absolutely involved in JFK and RFK’s assassinations. The bureau was either willfully incompetent or materially involved. That’s all they’re hiding. They will plead their cause as to why they did this. I don’t believe any of the magic bullet, grassy knoll or storm drain crap. There were three shots at JFK and Oswald was the shooter. Sirhan was trained by the agency.

152 Congress needs to mandate e-verify for every single business that files a federal tax form. They need to mandate steep penalties for not filing. They also need to ensure that illegal immigrants are not eligible for any federal benefits. That includes when they try to use an anchor baby as their meal ticket. Lastly they need to ensure the federal government isn’t indirectly funding state benefits for illegal immigrants. We should be cutting off all these channels to get these people out.

169 A few observations.

PDT steamrolled the DAVOS and CA communists. They will get up their hind legs and play #Resistence games but they have already lost the edge. They are playing on Trump's field and by his rules. My read is he is planning on resetting our relationship with the EU by converting it to an extractive from a subsidy relationship.

Additionally Trump has thrown down that he wants Chicom and EU influence out of North America with his move to reclaim the Panama Canal and buying Greenland - betting against him is at your own peril. As for Canada, they just got demoted to quasi colony status. I am half expecting he has plans for South America at some point to strengthen the USA's position as the world slides toward quasi self sustaining spheres of influence headed by the Chicoms and the EU, and to a lessor extent the OPEC and BRICS.

Domestically, his cabinet and key people are mostly quite young, committed the MAGA agenda, and over the next 4 years are going to gain experience that has a basis to be generational - think how great baseball teams build a talent stack. Meanwhile the Democrats are still waging 1965 civil rights wars and honking on LGBT private parts.

171 There is a report, I found credible, that claimed it was actually a 6.5 Mauser bullet
Posted by: Kindltot
=======
Easy enough to tell. 6.5 Swede bullet is nominally .264 inches in base diameter, 6.5 Carcano is .268 inches in diameter at the base.

Due to a shortage in genuine Italian surplus ammo using the .268 bullet at some point, domestic sources substituted a .264 bullet simply because those were much more common in the US. I think Prvi Partisan's first revival of teh Carcano uses the .264 bullet which generally results in poor accuracy fired from a Carcano. Even now, 6.5 Carcano is a pita for sourcing bullets--you either have to get the relatively rare bullet molds and cast them yourself or buy up when the component companies get around to providing .268 bullets in a special lot.

The other reason that Carcanos get a bad rap for accuracy is that the Italians after WWI needed carbines more than long rifles and chopped a bunch of barrels to carbine length and restocked them as carbines. The problem was that the original 91 model rifle used gain twist rifling to make it more accurate and increase barrel life. Chopping the barrels made the twist at the muzzle too slow.

Is the bullet diameter of 6.5 Mauser the same as 6.5 Carcano, or close enough that an ammo manufacturer might use the same slug for both rounds? If the bullet fragments from JFK's brain and the unfired ammo from Oswald's rifle are still held as evidence, it ought to be possible to do spectrographic analysis of the lead and other metals to see if they came from the same batch. Techniques in the field have improved a lot in the intervening years.

190 >> I think people like you are too afraid to admit to yourselves that your government is capable of true evil, and not just incompetence.

Im laughing so hard I puked. Nobody is that naive. Ok, there may be a few. But that’s not me.

I go based on facts and evidence. Everybody is guilty and has to prove themselves innocent. Government is never magnanimous or above suspicion.

That said, I’ve seen so much incompetence from government it’s staggering. But I probably shouldn’t be. They are just people on the end, and people are flawed.

It’s pretty clear the chain of evidence and autopsy on JFK were disastrous and messy. That’s the hallmark of government. That’s been used by many to suggest something nefarious on scene. In my estimation it isn’t. Oswald shot Kennedy. Likely three shots. First one, cold bore, into the curb. Next in the back. Last in the head. I’ve seen people, especially military, adjust their shots like that more times than I can count. It’s really a pretty clean crime scene. Buts it’s been obfuscated to hide the real insidious part- motive and who was behind it. I suspect that’s part of what they have hidden under the guise of protecting sources and methods.

214 I think university professors should have to periodically (say every 6 years) take the SAT and score at least a certain amount, say 1500.
At places with graduate programs, they should have to take the GRE.
Posted by: PG at January 25, 2025 12:55 PM (rCO8r)

I'm less concerned with a minimum, than the test(s), score(s), and test date has to be posted on their web page on the university site - along with the test scores from when they were admitted as students.

Each department would have to show the averages of their faculty.

226 172 Italian ammo manufacturing at the end was all over the map quality wise. Now, there are pictures of Oswald's cache showing Winchester brown box, NATO stuff. The Italians also had a frangible 6.5 round, adding to the mystery mouse maze.
Posted by: bill in arkansas

Italy was forced into war before they were ready and they were trying to convert to a newer cartridge with better ballistics than the old Carcano. Suddenly they, like the Japanese, were supporting logistics for two cartridges so the Italians dumped the newer rifles on the Finns and other places and returned to the 6.5 Carcano mfg. and that made a hash out of logistics for the Italians with the reconversion of ammo plants and so on.

The 91 Long Rifle is actually pretty accurate if left in original status. The gain twist in part helps make it so and the Italians used it to decent effect during International Shooting Matches with other militaries. I don't care much for the bolt, scarcity of proper .268 bullets, and clip feed rifles as these are a pita for operation. The safety is flimsy on these rifles too compared with the robust Mauser 98 design. Some accidental discharges from the safety breaking in the bolt.

231 Trump has thrown down that he wants Chicom and EU influence out of North America with his move to reclaim the Panama Canal and buying Greenland - betting against him is at your own peril.

I had no idea, Mr. Pierano, that all churches, mosques and synagogue leaders or even their members feel exactly the same on all political issues, or that none of them have supported President Trump.

FTR, of all the eight letters to the editor in the Post only two had no criticism of the Bishop, another one asking if Trump should demand an apology from Jesus for the Beatitudes. 282 It bumps up the amount of stomach acid. There's a spincter at the esophagus that closes offthe stomach when the acid is strong enough. But if it's weak, it stays partially open and allows the acid to splash the esophagus. You tend to make less acid as you get older. You can try drinking some diluted apple cider vinegar, with a meal, which may help. Antacids make it worse, long run

Thanks, plenty of smart people on this blog and you are one of them. Believe it or not, I read most of the comments if I am reading a particular thread and you get a pretty good sense of who is who over time.

My personal problem is a wall of text instead of splitting it up and I make some factual errors now and again when I rely on memory instead of checking my memory with the internet. Yesterday, when listing states, I forgot Delaware still had legal slavery when the 13th Amendment was ratified. Then some others chimed in that NJ still had a few slaves left from their gradual abolition of slavery laws and AK had an Indian tribe that still had slaves until the 1880's.

We can all learn a lot here and I do at least from others.

317 Chilling Pentagon documents may reveal why the 'Deep State' has always feared the release of the John F. Kennedy assassination files.

A 12-page report, signed by the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) in 1962, details a secret plan to commit heinous acts against American citizens to justify war with Cuba in the 1960s.

Code-named Operation Northwoods, this top-secret plot proposed enacting terrorism on US cities in a what is known as a 'false flag operation', before blaming Cuba in order to fool the Americans into supporting war efforts to oust communist Fidel Castro.
