Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Don't Touch That Dial, There's Music.....Concert season will soon be upon us. At least that is what we Frozen Tundra residents say. Attending concerts is one of the joys in life that The Fabulous and I do together. And as spring approaches we already have a couple of them lined up. One of the interesting things that has come about with the world wide web is the vast amount of knowledge and how varied it is. For example when we see Chuck Prophet and The Bodeans in concert over the next couple of months we can go online and obtain the following: -Set lists -Merchandise to be found at the concert -A view of the stage from your seat -Reviews of the concert at previous venues So you are probably thinking what does the definition of surprise have to do with tonight's Music Thread? Good question. The Fabulous and I are big fans of Neil Young & Crazy Horse. We traveled to the famed Summer Fest grounds in Milwaukee in the Summer of 2003 to see Mr. Young and the best grunge band perform. Young's new album hadn't been released. We hadn't heard of any reviews. We had no idea what was in store for us that evening. We were expecting classic Young & Crazy Horse. Boy were we surprised when he unveiled Greendale. The entire album was played. Then to top it off, they played 5 encore songs. I don't have a great memory, I have the handy dandy internet. So I can look up all the information about an upcoming show. However, I do enjoy being surprised. So have you ever been to an event that totally surprised you? Thank you for stopping by. If you have complaints about tonight's entertaining music thread. Last concerts I went to that I enjoyed were Jon Anderson (just him and an acoustic guitar) and Anonymous 4 (Medieval motets).
Anything electric just gets too loud and the sound just kind of mushes in the air. Boy do they make sure the drums come through crystal clear. Never understood that--drums are for keeping time, right? Posted by: BeckoningChasm at January 18, 2025 08:14 PM (CHHv1) 12

---- Saw Laurie Anderson on her Mister Heartbreak tour back in 1984 in Richmond VA. It was my first non-Classical concert, done in a beautiful old historic venue. She played her tape-bow violin, and there was animation projected behind her. It was all very avant-garde and art pop-y and I loved it. Several, but the one that really stands out is seeing Goose Creek Symphony (!) at The Cellar Door in DC somewhere in the second half of the 70's. They were tight! And you were part of the joy they were feeling in playing. On the other end of the spectrum, saw the Stills-Young tour whenever the heck that was (at Largo, I think , for you old DC folks), with a thoroughly drunk and embarrassing Stills; I vaguely remember a very pissed Young taking over the rest of the show.

I love Anonymous 4!! I haven't seen them in years, didn't even know they were still touring. We saw them in the 90s; they performed at the dedication of a Greek Orthodox church that had been restored. Or maybe it was just the ceiling that had been restored and an incredible mosaic mural installed. At any rate, the concert was literally breathtaking. They sounded like one voice. It was mesmerizing to hear them live after many years of enjoying their cds at hone. Posted by: Tammy-al Thor at January 18, 2025 08:21 PM (Vvh2V) 23

Surprised at an event? Well, I went to my very first NHL game. It was at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, and due to where I lived, I was obligated to root for the Flyers.
The surprise occurred in the second period. The ref took a spill skating backwards down the ice and broke his ankle. Despite being a distance away from the ice, I could tell that he broke his ankle because of the bizarre way it was pointing. Obviously, the ref was in serious pain and he banged his fist on the ice it emphasize that truth. The Flyers fans booed the ref for five straight minutes because he wouldn't get off the ice and allow the game to continue. That....surprised...me. Although, in retrospect, it shouldn't have. Another surprise...mostly that I enjoyed myself. I'm not a big James Taylor fan, although I enjoy a nice melody regardless of the artist. I went to the concert at the Mann Music center which is an outdoor stage with grass seating.
The surprise came when he did "Shower the People." Turns out an errant rain cloud decided to upstage Mr. Taylor and let out a light drizzle through the entire song...When the song ended, so did the rain, and the sun came out again. No embellishment. Taylor spent the next few minutes laughing and shaking his head in wonder before continuing the concert. Bonus: Totally unannounced, Carly Simon showed up to duet with Taylor (apparently they had been previously married and at the time they were getting along) Posted by: Orson at January 18, 2025 08:43 PM (dIske) 66

Another concert that was a surprise was Lyle Lovett and his Large (not Big) Band. A rare group that is far better live than they are on recordings. Partly because Lovett is such an entertainer, in between songs he’d tell stories and jokes and talk to the audience like he knew you personally.
One of the most amazing things was that about every 3 songs he’d stop and about 3 or 4 of the band members would go to the sidelines and replacements would come out; and the band would totally change its style. They’d go from country to bluegrass to gospel to western to light rock, and watching Lovett was like watching a coach calling plays, moving players on and off the field like a master. It was like watching 6 different bands with 6 completely different sounds that night. I wouldn't say I'm a huge Dylan fan and his voice is terrible but he wrote some quotes good songs and music , he arrived on time and did a good show. Very first concert I went to as a wee tot was James Taylor at Princeton University. Smaller hall that was on the law school campus, he was still on the way up. He was there with his full band and an overflow crowd of few thousand, all electrified acoustic stuff. First song, the power goes out with a bang. Lights out, music done and the crowd getting loud and pissed. Taylor started playing without any amplification and the whole place was quiet as a church. He played about an hour like that and the only time the crowd made a sound was to clap enthusiastically after each song. That was unexpected but pretty cool. A concert I skipped that I always kinda regretted - on our honeymoon night we drove up to a resort hotel in Hot Springs, Ark. so as we headed up the room that had Champaign waiting for us I noticed their entertainment hall was packed (they were known for hosting big acts) and the sign read “Tonight only; B.B. King!”

An event that surprised me. I. Was. There. on the 4th of July in San Diego when the pyrotechnician accidentally shot off ALL the fireworks in the first go. Up close it was supposedly fantastic, but from where we were on a hilltop, they made this sad little arc and fell in the ocean, and that was it for the whole night. It made national news. My friends from the East Coast and I had packed their squirming kids into the car to get to a great view. It took about an hour to drive three miles to get home. Many years ago, I attended a concert by a Chicago-based early-music group, the Harwood Early Music Ensemble, in which they played Anglo-Burgundian music by Josquin de Prez, Johannes Ockeghem, and Heinrich Isaac. Husband went to the ticket office and asked what was available. We scored second row center. Saw The Flying Elvis'es (?) drop in and Otis Day and the nights singing Shout andof course JB. I've been thinking of blasting this tune for a neighbor or two on Monday. It was used as the theme song for television's "The Plot Against America" aka Fascism comes to USA via Charles Lindbergh had he used his popularity and successfully ran against FDR prior to WWII. The show brought out many comparisons from the Left to Lindy and DJT after he mentioned "putting America first."
It's actually a New Deal song by Dick Powell and I love the fact that maybe said neighbors might confuse "Dawn" the golden start of the day" as " Don the golden start of the day" in the opening lyrics. https://youtu.be/eCKvfLcwL3E Posted by: Rex B at January 18, 2025 09:24 PM (LS72h) 155

For comparison I've always heard that Fiddler's Green *sucks*. Posted by: Helena Handbasket at January 18, 2025 09:42 PM (NtUSo) 187

Dire Straits "On Every Street" tears my guts out every time. She was the one that got away. Bad timing for both of us and certainly no hard feelings but still, 30 years later - ouch.
Posted by: Tonypete at January 18, 2025 09:32 PM (WXNFJ) Some of their music is so poignant - they had a real talent for that. Another one like that is “Hand in Hand”. “ If I've been hard on you, I never chose to be I never wanted no one else I tried my best to be somebody you'd be close to Hand in hand like lovers are supposed to. The sky is crying, the streets are full of tears Rain, come down, wash away my fears And all this writing on the wall Oh, I can read between the lines.” Posted by: Tom Servo at January 18, 2025 09:46 PM (7MHHr) 192

Saw Andre Segovia solo in concert at Ravinia (Chicagoland) about 1972. Unbelievable. We asked for encore after encore. Finally he said, “I’m an old man. Let me go.” He was 84.

Got some stories about the whole River Market thing. Went to grade school with a "Cummins" (Comissano), and had a pretty good friend in High School named Barber (Barbarino).
Worked with an old bookie who became a commodity broker. His book was the "Who's Who" of KC tough guys... all old and pretty mellow when I met them. I was watching an old documentary from the 80s about American dialects, back before the Internet annihilated them all.
It had two segments on Pittsburgh. One was four old ladies from down Southside. The other was three teenage girls, from an unspecified area. From the sound of them, I'd guess up northeast from Pittsburgh in Allegheny county. I used to stew in those accents as a little kid, before I left for the mountains in Colorado, and then Appalachia. Nothing sounds like them anywhere else, even in the rest of PA. Once I was hearing them again on this video, I was captivated. I ended up sitting there through those entire segments for overcame hour, because it took me right back to being a little 10yo yinzer. Circa 1975, Woody Herman came to Happy Valley. I knew he was ancient but I also knew he used to be somebody so I should go. (Resorting to Wiki and using basic math, he was around 52 so, you know, he was ancient.) He absolutely blew my socks off.

I went to a few concerts, but never really immersed myself in the lyrics. I think True Devotees actually absorbed a Cult Like Religion, as they subjected themselves to their "Marxist Minstrels" ... who were anti-(Christian)religion, and anti-America.
Sure they "fought" for some freedom against the government tyranny, but they were actually controlled by the Commie/Marxist evil cabal. From my early college days I transitioned into a Christian Revolution, not only against the commie institutions, but also against the Christian Institutions, which (imo) also had succumbed to The Evil Empire(s). Where from here, forty years later? idk, AoS is not my source of Truth, but this place offers a place of comfort in times of trouble. (though my Christian Doctrine opposes a majority here ... I oppose everyone, at some point, it would seem ... heh) Posted by: illiniwek at January 18, 2025 10:33 PM (Cus5s) 221

You know what's really cold? Your property taxes increasing year after year based on unrealized gains. You gain no income yet the bureaucrats will tell you if you are retired to get a job or sell to pay these taxes.

Hello MisHum! Long time no talk. Glad to see you are still consistent with Frank Zappa. Yellow Snow. Perhaps one of his all-time classics?
Reminds me of my younger days, a buddy who had visited family (lots of cousins) back east somewhere for the summer returned and said, "LCD, you HAVE to listen to this song! It's by a guy named Frank Zappa." I had never heard of him before, having listened to a steady of English rock like Zep, Tull, Trower, Stones, with some American RandR like Deep Purple, Skynyrd, Allman Bros. But nothing, and I mean nothing, was ever like Zappa. And he played, on his cassette tape, "Yellow Snow." I was amused, amazed, and very well entertained. And decades later, I still smile when surprised by your Mystery Link. Hope all is well with you and the Missus. Oh, and stay warm. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at January 18, 2025 11:27 PM (n4dGz) 226
All these memes about Floridians not being able to handle cold while Northerners are not fazed is the purest bullshit. I live in Tampa, have for a long time, and last week's cold snap I, and all the Floridians I saw, here in t-shirts, shorts, flip flops and the snowbirds were bundled up with winter coats and scarves, long pants. I (and most Floridians) don't even OWN a winter coat. I wear long pants to church and that's about it, I don't care how cold it gets (although it rarely gets below freezing). This trope about Northerners being immune is pure crap, I see them daily all bundled up in 40 degree weather like it's a flippin' blizzard or something. We're just too used to dressing light. We don't layer. But it makes stupid northerners, who live in the shittiest climate, feel good about it. While you are laughing at Florida man, we're laughing at you scraping your windshields, shoveling snow, starting your care 30 mins before you leave to get them warmed up, stamping your slush sodden boots and winter socks to get your feet warm and your fingers burning as they come back alive.

To answer the original question: Yes, I went to a concert that surprised me: Jelly Roll.
We have season passes and I saw this on the event list and knew nothing about it. My wife knew what he looked like and that he was a rapper and we both figured that it was going to be gangster rap that we ordered on Wish.com. But we get the season passes to gain experience, so what the hell. Jelly Roll was great in concert. Very wholesome, great personality, amazing audience interaction. I knew nothing about the dude or his act and it was a hell of a good time. Posted by: Semper Why at January 19, 2025 09:24 AM (nKug+) 228
