5 Evening and morning to all the late toilers an early risers! 'Tis Friday, the consummation devoutly to be wished; and for many of us, a three-day weekend waves "Yoo-hoo!"

I'm seeing 47 F. outside, and I could go work out, but the heck with it. The aforementioned Friday is here. I can, but probably won't, work out tomorrow.

We may too, though if the low goes below freezing, people here will panic. It's possible that Gulf moisture may flow north while the cold air is coming south. We could get "wintry mix." If that gets bad, the state may close the bridges across the river, and then I can't get to work. What a shame.

Convincing them may be the hard part. But I'll put it on this basis: "Readers have come to expect a certain level of professionalism in what they read, especially if they are paying money for it. You've got to be professional to compete. Okay, they may buy your first book . . . but if they're dissatisfied, they won't buy your second. And they'll leave bad reviews, turning off future buyers. Do you want to risk that?"

As a published author myself, I can offer plotting and other suggestions to help them get their point across and make their stories more dramatic and effective, too.

All good things. Add to that a hobby that you enjoy doing in your down time to occupy your mind, hands, and something that makes you feel good about your results. Woodworking, painting, model trains, old cars, repairing people's electronic devices, something.

You absolutely need something like that to give you purpose and enjoyment. After years of working and having that purpose given to you as part of said work, if you don't give yourself that purpose you'll deteriorate mentally and physically and it happens alarmingly quickly, like in one to two years. Don't go there. Stay sharp, stay alive. Be the guy who is still showing people how to do something at 90 to 100 years old that everyone marvels at how well you're doing.

At the university where I work, we have a requirement for staff that they *must* attend work on the last day before officially retiring.

A lot of folks will use up excess PTO before then, as we only get paid out up to 10 days of PTO when we retire, regardless of how much we've accumulated.

"Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen's computer was infiltrated by Chinese hackers"

"The hack, what the department called a 'major incident,' happened in December when Chinese state-sponsored hackers breached the department's computer security guardrails by compromising third-party cybersecurity service provider BeyondTrust, according to Treasury officials"

I wonder what the government pays for this "cyber security",and who got fired over this incident.

Great job, BeyondTrust. This is exactly the level of service I expect from government contractor security experts.

I see people wanting to go into the "Cybersecurity" field, but it seems to be mainly people flailing about trying to keep other people from doing stupid thing. There is not much of this stuff like you see on TV where a young hero hacker saves the world by breaking into the enemy's computers and runs a self destruct program.

How many autopen machines do they have running? That's a LOT of pardons.

And seriously, I'd like to see the use of autopen machines except in case of physical inability of the President's signing hand, and only he can use it when physically present in the presence of two witnesses who must sign off that the President used it in place of signing something by hand.

Of course that would never happen, because Congress critters never inconvenience themselves and act in such a manner that implies that they are above the law (in many cases, not all.)

131 Hadrian:

I have to head to work in a couple of minutes, so I can't stick around to help. For anyone else trying to help you out though:

- What distribution of Linux you were trying to install? Ubuntu? Mint? Something else? What version?

- Does the USB stick allow you to boot into a live installation first and did that succeed?

- How far into the install process did you get?

- Was there an error message? What was it (exactly)?

Here's some ideas to think about though:

1. Are you installing on a completely clean drive with nothing on it or is something else already there (like Windows?)

2. Might this be a conflict between the installer and your BIOS's UEFI secure boot settings? (Note, make note of every bios setting you intend to change, write them down, so you can restore them back to original if a change you make doesn't help!)

163 Here is the money quote:
"In 2022, Baltimore City had 23 schools without a single student who tested proficient in math, Maryland State Department of Education data revealed. In total, only 7% of students in the school district tested proficient in math."

The reason that this is significant is that thirty years ago I read that Alabama (I think. It might have been Arkansas) used an algorithm to predict the number of prison beds needed in ten years. The algorithm used 8th grade math scores as one of its factors.

Also, note the correlation between overdose and homicide rates. Over time they begin to parallel each other.

Also go back to Mayor Butler to understand how he built a base in Baltimore to sustain his corrupt politics...he drove out the conservative elements of the city.
