Winter Sports Cafe

pidgeons.jpg

Border collies being awesome little workers.

Table tennis looks like a real sport sometimes.

Sneaking a peak at Indonesia's most active volcanos. I want to see a volcano up close like I want to see quicksand up close. Video's fine, thank you.

Cat just saw Eastern Promises and thinks he's Viggo Mortenson.

When you practice, you can achieve great things.

Time to tend the roses.

The under-chin scratching post was a big hit.

Where did cats learn these behaviors from? I think maybe from The Benny Hill Show.

The Spy.

A very nice human opened a shelter for paralyzed dog and you can see how greatful they are to him.

I love when dogs are overprotective. It's funny.

I like wintry movies with ice & snow.

Stallonke's "Eye See You" movie has lots of snow & ice. I watched it last night.

There was a weird & creepy short TV series a few years ago called Fortitude. I loved it because it was set in Norway, or somewhere like that. Finland, maybe?

NEW - Homo erectus, not sapiens, first humans to survive desert: study
Evidence collected from the Engaji Nanyori site in the gorge suggests that Homo erectus adapted to this hostile environment “by focusing on ecological focal points such as river confluences where water and food resources were more predictable”, Mercader Florin said.

“Their ability to repeatedly exploit these focal points… and adapt their behaviours to extreme environments demonstrates a higher level of resilience and strategic planning than previously assumed.”

Specialised tools found at the site, such as hand axes, scrapers and cleavers, showed that Homo erectus had also worked out how to process animal carcasses.

The bones of animals such as cows, hippopotamuses, crocodiles and antelopes also had cut marks, indicating they had been skinned and had their bone marrow extracted. [...]

23 A lavish thermal bath complex has been unearthed in Pompeii, the ancient city that was frozen in time following Mount Vesuvius’ eruption in 79 C.E. Archaeologists say it may be one of the largest discoveries of its kind. [...]

Due to the size of the home, researchers think it was owned by an important figure in the community. The bath could host up to 30 people and was likely used to impress guests.

The complex contains three rooms that were heated to different temperatures. Guests entered the calidarium first, which was filled with hot water, according to BBC News’ Rebecca Morelle and Alison Francis. Then, in the tepidarium, they would rub oil into their skin and immerse themselves in warm water. Bathers would then continue on to the frigidarium, which was filled with cold water. They also had access to an apodyterium, or changing room, with a beautiful mosaic floor.

That's interesting. There was a Digging for Britain British [obviously!] site that had an excellent mosaic of Achilles killing Hector and dragging the body around Troy's walls from a chariot and King Priam doing his thing -- begging for his son's body back; paying for the corpse in its weight in gold -- and Achilles relenting, with Zeus' intervention, and returning the body with a 12-day truce to allow for funeral rites and mourning.

96 I love the South Koreans.

I taught there. The kids were amazing. The high school kids would start English classes, and others, at 7pm and go to 10pm. If you had detention, you were there to 11pm.

I stayed one noght to try to help some kids and left at 11pm.

It was crazy!

The streets were filled with kids out of night school. Some walking home safely through the dark back streets. I passed a small park where a bunch were hanging out and chilling for a bit.

I went into 'Family Mart' and it was packed with kids eating ramen.

They were amazing.

126 Since my mother passed away this month, I do have a place to live for a year or so, after taking care of her and Dad for decades.

And I have enough money to survive for awhile while I Iearn some skills, get a job, create something and design a life.

I did tell my friends and neighbors on vacation that when they come back, they need to take the cats back. I can't do all this and provide them constant attention.

The dog Ralphy, legally mine but in all reality Mom's is enough. Old and depressed. That's plenty.

I love the cats but for the first time in decades, I need to take care of myself. I've never gone on a vacation - well high school trips, but that would be nice.

Beautiful cats. They will easily find a new home. And I'll toss in a ton of toys, scratching posts and a beautiful cat tree.

Tough year for me, but the rest of the world is winning. So that ,akes things better.

188 The vast majority of famines throughout history were man-made. Yes, there are late rains, crop failures, etc., but one of the measures of a successful government was how they moved food from surplus to famine areas.

One of Mao's achievements was achieving the first nation-wide famine in China's lengthy history.

Yay, Communism!

China has had many famines, but none covered the entire Empire because it is big and covers multiple climate zones. With an extensive networks of canals and navigable rivers, the Mandate of Heaven was shown by emperors who moved food to where it was needed. Famine was often the precursor to the fall of a dynasty.

Mao, through the miracle of Communism, created the first famine that had nothing to do with crop failures. Pretty amazing stuff.

There’s a shortage of mediocre tech talent, too, which is why companies want to import piss-poor coders from India. They don’t work harder or longer. Hell, most put in less than 40 hours a week, and their output sucked and just had to be redone by more qualified native-born engineers.

Almost everyone in tech knows you can’t off-shore coding to India and get a good product; why would importing them and paying them more lead to better results?

And the great thing is you can do this again and again, and sometimes the raid happens sometimes it doesn't.

The MPD has faced criticism from both progressives and conservatives for its policing methods. This decision by local departments could leave MPD with hundreds fewer officers than it typically relies on for an event of this scale. While MPD has stated that thousands of officers will assist with security, several local departments confirmed that they will not participate.

What's to understand?

1) Emperor (in modern times, emperors are typically called "General Secretary" or some similar fiction, but they're still emperors) and his successors rule until, whether by incompetence, invading barbarians, natural disaster, or a combination, the shit hits the fan. Millions die.

2) Emperor is assumed to have "lost the mandate of Heaven" and is deposed.

3) Country falls apart and is ruled by rival gangs of warlords for a while. More millions die.

4) Most brutal warlord, and/or the last one standing, declares himself Emperor.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

This. This is Chinese history.

339 315 Yes, a given country’s foreign policy actions is not dependent on its language, only its behavior.

But if you’re going to do a deep dive into the reasons behind those actions, you need to understand its cultural psychology. And a major component of that is its language.

Bulg, I am as far away from an Engineer as there is, and I disagree. There are so many sources out there from which information can be gotten, and as we all know, history is written by the winner. Getting a wide breadth of information from multiple sources is what brings you closer to truth. If knowing the language was a criteria, we would be in big trouble. For example, we learn about history where the language at the time is dead. There are multiple means to an end.

Sorry, but you came across as rather arrogant, as if the only information worth knowing about Chinese history is locked up in Mandarin vaults.

Happily, there is a lot of scholarship that delves into the very issues you describe, that provide translations but also dig into the subtleties of Chinese thought and language.

I mean, that's the value that scholar add - they make things accessible. What I did was condense 4500 years of Chinese military history into 350 pages, and tried to keep it readable. People seem to like it. You should check it out before you condemn it out of hand.

The only member of the 1804-1806 Lewis and Clark expedition to die, modern medical researchers posit he died of a probable ruptured appendix. He would have died no matter where he was at in 1804. In his case, where what is now Sioux City, Iowa. He was pretty sick at first, with vomiting and such, and then appeared to recover for a bit. “We are very much alarmed at his condition, and further because we are unable to effect a cure” etc.

The way he is so meticulous (as Orson mentioned) about documenting and leavined as he found it, discussing styles of art, styles of dwellings... i almost swear he's doing data collection for a Master's thesis. In any case, he has some remarkable video of absolutely beautiful locations that I'll never see otherwise.

415 Yes - a pencil lead thickness of water running, just a thin stream from the farthest tap in the home (usually the bathroom) will do it. Open up cabinet doors. Keep the thermostat above 55°. Also measure the water temperature coming out of the tap if really worried. If it starts to get close to 32 need to make more effort. Coleman lanterns are good for supplemental heat as well as light.

Try that with an LED, solar boy

'It was the “LOL” in Lloyd’s response that set me off,'

People here are opinionated. Don't take it personally.
Maybe you're right and he's wrong. Maybe the reverse.

417 384 Piper,

I'm over cats. I love them. Just not now.

I just want to go upstairs to relax and watch stupid crap. But it's cold outside, they need to be out so they aren't crazy at night and the night is ruined.

I am not judging you, Stateless. In fact, just the opposite. This is another one of those moments I wish I lived close to you, because I want to support you. You have been through a very difficult time, and you are still in a very tough place, emotionally. It’s a different tough, but it’s still tough. You haven’t even fully mourned let alone adjusted to this new reality. Right now you just need to give yourself time to be sad, and then recharge. Virtual hugs, friend.

418 Hi Ben Had,
Here sipping a lovely CA Pinot, and being in awe of your plumbing skills. Most plumbing I've ever done was repair outdoor sprinkler piping when we were in CA. But my neighbor was from your school - she would not call "professional help" for anything, as she felt she (or more likely her Dad) could and would do a better job.
Good luck with the rest of the project, will be rooting for your success.

419 Stateless, I agree with Piper. You have performed the most wonderful act of love a child can give their parent. It is not easy, by any stretch. And your life needed to take a back seat while you did it. But I can guarantee you, you will never regret that choice. And now it is your time: to sort thru your thoughts, feelings, wish list, etc. And we are all here to support you and cheer you on.
