Musical Interlude

Despite what you may think, this is the original version.

Also, I've been to most of these places. Cheating a little, because quite a few of them are suburbs of Sydney.

6 @5/Skip: Yup, me too, but it usually says it's not available in your region/country when it does that. This time it's just saying it's "not available" without saying why. Oh well, with the name of the artist and the song that flashed by quickly before it disappeared, I was able to find another copy on YouTube.

Hopefully this is the same one:

8 Evening to all the late toilers, and morning to the insomaniacals and early risers! 'Tis Tiu's Day, one step closer to the weekend. Chilly this am, 45 F. and dampish, though no rain. We're due for a warmup into the 60s by week's end, but then rain on Saturday, and some cold by Monday.

Yesterday I mailed that card and letter to my ex-wife's mother. We'll see if she writes back, says nothing, or (and I think this unlikely) says something sharp in return. She never seemed that sort when I knew her; best mother-in-law a guy could have, I thought then.

The Killer Kittenz From Outer Space are doing well, and i'm waking up. Howz you?

18 In the video arcade days there was a game called Major Havoc. You were on an asteroid, and had to enter a station in spacesuit, navigate a maze, turn off a reactor before it exploded, and get back out again. Your suit had only so much air, too. If you hesitated too long, the little figure would fold its arms and tap its foot in impatience. And if you still waited, it would put its hands to its space helmet, shake its head, and expire noisily as the session ended.

I liked it because you had to think a little about your passage through the maze and its obstacles. Maybe that was why it disappeared from arcades after a while.

Yeah, well...

Saguaro cacti not so much, but Australia has the largest population of wild camels in the world. Like so many other things they were released into the wild when they stopped being useful and became a pest.

My late big black Wolf cat would gently paw my hair when he thought it was time I got up and fed him. At that it was better than Marie-Antoinette's meowing. 28 The last great treacherous place on the Oregon Trail was the Cascade Rapids on the Columbia River near modern day Dalles, Or. The only feasible way pass them was to wait for rafts/boats to come up out of Portland and then ferry people down. Later a bypass was created, the Barlow Bypass, that went through the Mount Hood area. When I lived in that area I spent a lot of time chasing down the various ways people got down the Columbia River and using the Barlow bypass. It was a great way to learn the region in a very granular way.

Near the end of the 19th century, the Cascade Locks were built that allowed shipping to predictably go up and down that stretch of the Columbia. Later the Dalles Dam was built which flooded them under 100 ft. of water which finally solved that problem permanently. Today the Lower Columbia River is well tamed and is a major artery for shipping grain out of the Palouse region and on to the world.

38 Fen,

Church was good.

Being raised Baptist and visiting a Lutheran church on Communion Sunday presented an internal debate for myself around partaking in communion and the Baptist/Lutheran divergence on the role of the Host during the celebration of Communion.

Our Daily Bread...I remember as a young man my mother taking the time to mail me the monthly ODB during the early part of my Navy career.

And your link reminds me that there are many parts of my youth that it might be good to bring back into my life.

Thank you.

Well, I think if you go back, consider taking the Lord's Supper if you didn't .😊Christ is the host and as I understand the theology in the Lutheran church any Christian is welcome. In the RC church it would not be suitable for you to take the Eucharist but it wasn't a RCC. We have been having the Lord's Supper every week for about five months and I think they appreciate it . I do.

I am glad you have good memories of receiving ODB from your mom while in the Navy.

42 Fen,

Then we also have the private issue of the role of Baptism in the Christian faith.

I do not desire to begin a theological discussion amongst fellow Morons here, and simply leave it at....

My families roots trace directly through early Switzerland in the 16th century, and adherence to the Anabaptist movement. After fleeing Europe due to the persecution taking place there, our history goes through the Mennonite and Brethren churches of Pennsylvania.

We will simply leave the discussion here at me needing to take a somber reflection of the direction that we take in continuing attendance or continue to seek a different House of Worship.

I believe that our renewed journey is just beginning, so prayers for guidance would be appreciated.

I loved that game. The arcade I helped manage waaaaaay back in '84 was one of the fortunate ones to get the original version in the custom cabinet. It was also one of the ones to get the early version with the missing "final" rescue screen, due to an incomplete ROM being installed. I remember the first time I completed all of the missions and was stoked to finally complete the game, only to have it reset to the start. We never got the fix, and I never saw another one

Posted by: NaughtyPine at January 14, 2025 06:16 AM (cU25t)

60 @58/Ben Had: Vance may have phrased it badly, but I suspect he's correct on the timing. If a deal can be struck, there will be pressure from entities (more like enemies) within (State Department) and without (Hamas-friendly nation states) to let it play out and see if it works, even though it won't.

The deal is only happening because on January 21, Trump would impose his own conditions and whatever deal they could make or agree to will likely be worse for Hamas, and they know it.

This reminds me so much of the Iranian Hostage Crisis from just before Reagan took power. Same thing; first day Reagan was in, and look at that, hostages released. (Iranians: The time to eff around has has ended, and we really don't want to find out.)

79 @62/Ben Had: I know it's still not a done deal, Hamas hasn't announced it'll accept it, which means they could still do a rug-pull at the last second and I'm kinda expecting that. I know it's mentioning the term "cease fire" instead of "peace agreement" which means it's your standard "re-arm and recruit, then attack again within 10 years" result that one should never accept, but everyone always does with the inevitable and utterly predictable terrorist attack occurring.

Israel should have set a deadline by which it then said, "We now recognize that our hostages are dead. You just blew your last chance by continuing to screw around and not return them alive. Here comes the scorched earth retribution you have justly earned," and then told the rest of the world to fuck off until Israel declared the war good and truly done, and only when they got a proper full unconditional surrender, and not this cease-fire bullshit.

There were statements made by Israel after the October 7 attack that it would do whatever necessary to get their people back, and now those words are backing them into a corner to accept a deal, even if the deal is a shit sandwich.

I would think "do whatever" in this context does not include "capitulate".

Otherwise every Liam Neeson movie would become weird and boring.

"I have a very special set of skills...."

"Those skills include making me a sandwich tough guy?"

".... ugh. Fine. White or wheat?"

88 @70/Hadrian the Seventh: "... but what baffles me is how to verify Linux after downloading it."

You can verify the original .ISO or .___ file that you downloaded by downloading the sha256sums file, and running this command against it in a terminal (command line):

sha256sum --ignore-missing -c sha256sums

If it says "OK", you're good. If it throws an error about the sum not matching, then you've got an invalid download and should find a valid one.

I've got to get to work, later all.

91 Good morning Ben Had,

I share Grumpy’s ambivalence about the hostage deal. Be great to get the remaining living hostages back but that “purchase” will have a significant cost down the road in blood, pain and treasure.

These feuds will only end when one of the two sides is unable and unwilling to continue. And I fervently hope that side is never Israel.

Make Gaza self-reliant then. No aid for them. Just water and seeds.

Another alternative is to keep the population moving from one tent city safe zone to another. Destroying all evidence that there was a Gaza infrastructure once they leave.

128 I happen to mention to my younger one that I hadn't read anything as to how LAX was weathering the fires and she being a digger of facts (I taught her well) came up with this which one or more of you may find useful.
As of the latest information available, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is open and operating normally despite the recent wildfires and associated conditions. There have been no reports of closures due to the fires, although there have been flight delays and cancellations due to various factors including weather conditions. Travelers are advised to check their flight status with their airline for the most current information.

131 I don't know why anyone would be surprised by the hostage deal, other than a lot of people somehow convinced themselves that 10//7 fundamentally changed Israeli politics, which no one should have fell for after living through 9/11 here. Israel is every bit as screwed up or more in its domestic politics than we are. So it'll just do this all over again at some point. Same old, same old. It's pathetic, but Israeli's best hope is that the Palestinians do something so offensive that they scotch the deal.
