Belated Birthday Remembrance From Across The Fruited Plain Yesterday would have been Rush Limbaugh's 74th birthday.
El Rushbo was one of a kind. His influence on conservatism is immeasurable. Phrases he uttered regularly are part of innate jargon for millions of his listeners and followers. Talent on loan from God. Half my brain tied behind my back just to make it fair. Drive-by media. Low information voters. So many more! Drop some of your favorites in the comments. There are numerous great clips of Rush available in the rabbit hole that is the internet. Here is one of my all time favorite clips. It's something that Rush would bring up again and again when he would talk about Ted "The Swimmer" Kennedy. For a much longer tribute, check out this 25 minute video - Rush Limbaugh's Greatest Hits And Funniest Phone Calls. Florida Woman An 'Ette? (Feel Good Story) Everyone knows that our 'ettes are the the smartest and most practical women in the world. Smart money says this Florida woman is either an 'ette, or she was raised by an 'ette. She Found Her Dream Wedding Dress for $25 at a Thrift Store–and ‘It Fit Like a Glove’ After she couldn’t find a gown she liked in any bridal shop, a Florida woman bagged her dream wedding dress in a thrift store for just $25. Julia Webber felt disheartened after trying on dresses at a boutique shop and not finding anything that was right. “I wanted something simple and elegant… something form-fitting at the top. So she couldn’t believe it when she found the perfect dress in a local thrift store. **** The dress was priced at $50 but that day it was ‘half-off day’ so Julia took it home for just $25. “I loved the beading,” Julia said. “And it had a brand new tag on it.” She couldn’t find the Casablanca dress new online but estimates it might have cost up to $3,000. **** Julia shared her thrifting discovery on social media and hopes it has inspired others to go hunting for second-hand pieces—and she plans to pass on the dress to a bride who can’t afford a new one. Strange Geography - Vulcan Point (Philippines) An island in the middle of a lake, in the middle of a volcano, in the middle of a bigger lake, in the middle of a bigger island, in an archipelago, in the Pacific Ocean. The paradisiacal beauty of Lake Taal, on an island in the archipelago known as the Philippines, belies the mammoth terror at its center: a highly active volcano that has taken thousands of lives and has been roiling since 1991 after a dormant period following its 1977 eruption. With 33 recorded eruptions, the Taal Volcano is the second most active volcano in the Philippines and a part of the Pacific's "Ring of Fire," a large swath of the Pacific known for its earthquakes and active volcanoes. Despite the active seismic activity, this place is rather popular with tourists. Once at the Taal Lake shore, travelers take a boat to reach the volcano island, where they either hike up the hill or ride a horse. But the Taal Volcano is more than that. The region has some strange geological features that attract visitors from around the world. The way the features are arranged is something like nesting dolls. On the Filipino island of Luzon is Lake Taal. Within that lake is a volcano, Taal Volcano. At the top of the volcano, a thousand feet above sea level, is a basin, known as a caldera, carved out of the mountain hundreds of thousands of years ago. The caldera itself is filled with water, creating a crater lake, the largest crater lake in the world. At the center of the crater lake is a tiny island, Vulcan Point, which is one of Taal Volcano's cones. The title of "the largest third-order island" is a short form of the logic that it's an island within a lake, within another island, within a lake, on an island, within an archipelago, within the Pacific. Phrase Origin By popular demand, here's another explanation of the origin of a common phrase. Where does "spick and span" come from? The term spick and span means brand new. This term has a nautical origin. Spick meant nails (or spike) and span meant wooden shavings. On a new sailing ship, the nails would still be shiny and the wooden shavings from manufacture would still be present. Therefore, a new ship would be all spick and span. More from dictionary.com: This term combines two nouns that are now obsolete, spick , “a nail” or “spike,” and span , “a wooden chip.” In the 1500s a sailing ship was considered spick and span when every spike and chip was brand-new. The transfer to the current sense took place in the mid-1800s. DJ Doof – Double Entendre Version Tonight’s ONT brought to you by timely advice for Los Angeles Join the cool kids! Portland's county is finally getting around to trying the Antifaoids who occupied and trashed the Portland State University library last spring, who did hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage, and forced the closure of the library for months for repairs.
They did this for "Palestine", of course. There are twenty-seven circuit court judges in Portland's county, and purely by happenstance, the first library case was assigned to the only Arab and the only Muslim judge in the county. I'm sure that was a complete coincidence. Posted by: The ARC of History! at January 13, 2025 10:12 PM (uxCna) 43

I suppose we're supposed to just shrug our shoulders and abandon this great state and all the million and millions of Trump voters there because it's hopeless. Just like Abraham Lincoln did back in 1860 when a bunch of states wanted to walk away from the union. Too bad, so sad, I'm glad. What if Trump looked at America back in 2015 and came to the same conclusion? Where would we be now? She Found Her Dream Wedding Dress for $25 at a Thrift Store–and ‘It Fit Like a Glove’
It is one of those odd things about modern American culture that there is an idea that a wedding dress has to be ridiculously expensive. And this is an odd point that the cost of clothing is more important then the fit and look. Yes a lot of cheap clothing is cheap because it was made more cheaply, but more expensive clothing is often that way not because it was made better or with more expensive materials but instead because it has a brand... To modern woke politics traditional notions of competence simply don't matter.
And when something doesn't matter people will stop doing it. Want competent politicians Californians? Vote for dreaded Republicans. Even if the Republicans themselves are every bit as incompetent this will force the Democrats to refocus on traditional notions of what a competent government will do instead of just spreading their woke religion. The most fundamental problem with California is that they have corrupted their electoral system so greatly that it’s impossible to see how it could possibly be reformed, short of the Feds revoking statehood and placing the entire state under martial law with no ability to participate in any elections for at least a 10 year period.
The things California allows with its ballots would shock most people, they don’t believe that kid of thing could happen in this country. Posted by: Tom Servo at January 13, 2025 10:47 PM (7MHHr) 190

I heard Rush for first time when we driving to lunch back in my Overland Park days. This would have been Summer of 1990. One of the guys said you have to listen to this guy. He turned on the radio just before an animal rights update. The song Born Free started with all the screeching monkeys and gun fire. I was hooked at that moment.

This term combines two nouns that are now obsolete, spick , “a nail” or “spike,” and span “a wooden chip.” In the 1500s a sailing ship was considered spick and span when every spike and chip was brand-new. The transfer to the current sense took place in the mid-1800s.
Not obsolete in the Dutch language! The Dutch word for nail is spijker, clearly related to spick or spike. A piece of thin wood or split wood is a spaan in Dutch, again very close to the word span. Posted by: SnailRacer at January 13, 2025 10:57 PM (AsPyT) 208

He last drove the car and was listening to a football game broadcast. The same station, had the Limbaugh show as well. When I got in the car the next day t was on. I lister Ed for a few mins and was like what the hell is this? This guy makes a lot o sense. And listened to him for the next 15ish years.
I stoped listening around 2010 or so. By then there was so much stuff online politics wise the radio was kinda meh. Plus commercials every few mins became unbearable. The Last Remake of Beau Geist was an epic beach party. Neighbors tore down a long fence that was falling apart and hauled it to the beach where they built a "Fort" with the sections. Called everyone they knew to come for the finale when it was set on fire that night.
There were at least 100+ crazy drunks playing guitars and dancing and having an epic good time when the cops showed up. Cops decided things were cool and it would be a pain in the ass to call the fire department and put it out plus removing all the half-burnt wood. Later, a two cops showed up off-duty with a couple of coolers filled with confiscated beer. This was in the 70s of course. Posted by: pawn, RIP Vic at January 14, 2025 12:32 AM (QB+5g) 359

No 2nd Amendment right to fly drones.
I am ready for every single drone to be licensed. If we shoot it down for flying in an unauthorized space, we know exactly who gets the appropriate jail sentence. If you run your drone into a firefighting airplane, you get a big jail sentence. If a policeman does a random spot check, and your drone is NOT licensed, you get the same jail sentence as flying in an unauthorized space. If my views are too draconian, don't fly a f*ckin' drone. Harris to wildfire victims: "It's critically important that, to the extent you can find anything that gives you an ability to be patient in this extremely dangerous and unprecedented crisis, that you do”
—— Shorter: “Don’t blame me!!” Failed government always defaults to “We Fucked Up. Therefore, You Must Be Punished”. They won’t stay patient long, however. And expecting the same people who caused your problems to fix your problems …. The “Marshall Plan” may well devolve to Martial Plan real quick. Or not. They don’t believe in “law and order” so they will fail. Arsonists for example should be shot on sight. We’re all in this together, correct? There is no other way to effectively handle it. Didn’t say I liked it, but it is the most heinous crime and unique in the potential damage. How then, do progressives handle it? There was some firechick a couple years ago who arsonated about 100,000 acres in Cali, buncha houses, people killed. You know, Dead. Probation By all means, it is critical to be patient, like that old lady down in Cuba who was pissed off there is no electricity even though she was around in 1959. Everyone learns at their pace. JQ -
I hope this helps … Was your husband the type of person that enjoyed hurting you? From all you have told us, he was a loving man. People become combative as the disease progresses. My MIL was a tiny, less than 5 foot women, and still her slaps and screams made it difficult for the aides. My seeking out care, you are honoring the man he was, the man who would never knowingly harm you. The man, I sure, he would like to be again. But men are stronger than women and his out bursts may be more dangerous then my tiny MIL’s. The first rule of being a life guard - you can not save anyone when you are also drowning. You can not take care of him if his outburst is severe enough to hurt you. Seek out care with a loving heart and not a guilt filled one. And realistically, this is easier said than done. I still feel guilty. But I know she got a very good level of care with people who - unlike me - could actually get her to take a bath & keep her clean. I really, really hope this helps.
