Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Sunday Overnight Open Thread - January 12, 2025 [Doof]Howdy Hordelings, and a happy Sunday night to you all! Are you fully ensconced in 2025 yet? Are your holiday decorations down and back in storage? No matter how you answered those questions, we're glad you stopped by tonight's ONT. Let's see if anything fun or interesting awaits you tonight.
Sunday Night Mini Rant We're still a week away from the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States. Those of you who spend time on X may have noticed that there are quite a few high profile "influencer" style accounts who seem to think the 2024 election resulted in Trump becoming a king - instantly. These accounts, which I refer to as "MAGA X, Inc." have zero tolerance for anyone who does not accept and support 100% of what Trump says or does. Those who have questioned any of his selections for cabinet positions or expressed concern over the Continuing Resolution that Trump supported are called traitors. They've painted staunch conservatives in Congress as RINOs. To them -- How dare anyone wonder why renaming the Gulf of Mexico warrants any attention right now? Also to them -- Of course it's a great idea to pursue acquiring Canada or Greenland. Anyway, it's very interesting that even as Trump himself supports positions that are quite questionable to the conservative base that elected him, these MAGA influencers seem to have no interest in calling him out on anything. Many X users have been diligently digging into some of these MAGA influencers, and it seems as though much grift abounds. Free speech and capitalism are wonderful things. But a smart and informed consumer is even more wonderful. Choose wisely! Wholesome Content
Awesomeness Gen X Corner My Gen X content seems to have been well received by the Horde. At least the 2 or 3 emails I've received say so. You ask, I deliver! Schoolhouse Rock was a staple for Gen X kids while watching Saturday morning cartoons. Here's a look behind the curtain, so to speak, to see the face that goes along with a very familiar voice.
A salute to some elder Gen X ladies. OK, maybe they're late Boomers. Whatever. The years might not be right, but the sentiment certainly is! Fact check - true! I also want to thank the Horde for the kindness when I let you my mother in her late 80's passed away. Nine days ago we were talking about assisted living and she passed away fast. Gone Thursday before 1pm. I've turned a corner and am feeling better despite my entire life being up in the air. Now I'm only massively depressed but on the upswing. Really just Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy along with 2 young stage musicians. Billy is still an amazing guitarists. Sadly, Ian's voice is nowhere near what it used to be. He couldn't hit high notes, nor could he sustain long melodies. Was kinda sad. Posted by: Doof at January 12, 2025 10:13 PM (RFPHU) 29

Stand back good people, I had a thought today:
While viewing the VIPs during Carter’s funeral service, a thought occurred to me: The men there; DJT, Obama, Gore, and Pence, while mortal enemies, greeted each other by the normal, polite, mannerly convention: standing when greeting, shaking hands, saying hello and such. In Obama and PDJT’s case they even shared a laugh or two. Even though, I am sure they loathe each other. Contrast that to the women there. They revealed themselves to be petty, small, mean and rude people. Big Mike didn’t even attended. Harris, Hillary and Karen (I know, right?) Pence couldn’t be bothered to even fake graciousness or kindness. Leftist women have to be the foulest creatures on earth. Ugly, bitter, mean and nasty even when they, through their husbands, have reached the pinnacles of success and power. Posted by: Tonypete at January 12, 2025 10:14 PM (WXNFJ) 33

Trump says and does a lot of stuff that doesn't make sense to me. I'm not sure that I could agree with all of it even if I tried. I don't feel under obligation to the assclowns on X or anyone else to pass their test for MAGA purity. I agree with big things, American First, rolling back the crimes of the democrats, protecting individual freedoms. Posted by: Dr. Claw at January 12, 2025 10:14 PM (3wi/L) 34

Trump won by expanding the base not by relying on "conservatives" like Chip Roy who said on the House floor that Trump's conduct on J6 was impeachable and also wanted to see Ken Paxton impeached. Trump was trolling about Canada because they have been ripping us off for decades on trade but making a strategic alliance with Greenland is something that has been on the radar for decades because it makes complete sense. My mother was a nun for 14 years. She left the convent, met my Father, got married, had me 10 months later. If any of those are switched around.....so much more scandalous.
She left the convent which was pretty hard to do. Married Dad and moved to Canada. Became a teacher here. The principals were pretty hard ass, but they all loved Mom. American Thanksgiving would approach and they were fine with her being sick to celebrate with family in Detroit. Mom taught grade one. New teaching styles would appear for reading. Mom would close her door and teach tried and true phonics. Anytime I have ever met anyone taught by Mom, they would excitedly tell me that she was their favorite teacher ever. So Mom was a nun, a teacher. Also a dog thief. To be continued....part 3... Posted by: Stateless at January 12, 2025 10:19 PM (jvJvP) 54

Trump won by expanding the base not by relying on "conservatives" like Chip Roy who said on the House floor that Trump's conduct on J6 was impeachable and also wanted to see Ken Paxton impeached. How many Democrats called for any other Democrats to be punished for the 2016 DC insurrection or the 2020 riots? None. Which means there should have been just as many Republicans upset about the J6 protests. Posted by: Nero at January 12, 2025 10:28 PM (t0Rmr) 92

Continued from part 2.
One of her best friends was the secretary at the school. She lived near a house where there was a beautiful Collie kept outside in a fenced enclosure. It would bark all the time. So of course, nun of 14 years, teacher. Dog jail break. I was a young kid. I barely remember anything, much less why the hell I was brought along. But 1970's. Big car. Dark small town alley. The car stops. Lights go out. Mom and her friend open up the enclosure. The dog is lured into the car. I do remember. The fur was all matted. It was scared. It was a beautiful Collie. I don't even know what time this happened. I was a kid. It was dark. They brought the dog into our house. It was cleaned up and went to live a very happy life with one of my Mom's teacher friends on a farm in the country. I'm sure God is amused that she was a nun 14 years AND a dog thief. God would laugh at that. Thank you all for your support. Sorry for not responding. I'll read the thread tomorrow. Posted by: Stateless at January 12, 2025 10:34 PM (jvJvP) 119
>>When the illegals have been deported and the pace of inflation has been brought under control, to say nothing of any other campaign issues, then *maybe* I'll take an interest in acquiring Greenland. But not a second before.
One of the things I like about having a business guy who doesn't sleep in charge is the ability to multi-task. It's not an either or thing. It's both. Trump didn't just pull Greenland out of his ass. It has been talked about since the Truman administration because the Arctic is one of the most strategic places on earth, not just because of the minerals but because of the shipping lanes. That's why both China and Russia have been moving on it. We've been accustomed to administrations who can barely focus on one thing at a time. This administration will do more. Much more. Homan has already said he will start deporting illegal on day 1. I believe him. I also believe that all the other people in government getting paid can do their jobs at the same time. What you need to know: The largest river restoration project in American history has officially completed all of the work to remove the dams, a massive infrastructure project that was done ahead of schedule and on budget. Work will continue for several years restoring the 2,200 acres of formerly submerged lands. ... “This is a monumental achievement – not just for the Klamath River but for our entire state, nation, and planet. By taking down these outdated dams, we are giving salmon and other species a chance to thrive once again, while also restoring an essential lifeline for tribal communities who have long depended on the health of the river. This is proof of what’s possible when we come together to prioritize our environment, our people, and future generations.”... https://tinyurl.com/5yn9ptp4 Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at January 12, 2025 10:58 PM (4RQg7) 212

Orlok is presently watching a television program called "Beat Bobby Flay." It is not at all what I anticipated - the entire production appears to be a cooking challenge. Orlok, fool that he is, thought it would a show about what virtually everyone on the planet longs to do.
In the meantime, I have been brushing up on the whys and hows and whats of Earth in 2025. As a Nosferatu, I am limited in my ability to access normal means of education and instruction. Luckily, there is something called Distance Learning. Oh, and Wikipedia. This is helpful. Orlok understands now why Greenland would be advantageous to American interests, and would only warn that, as an autonomous overseas region of the Kingdom of Denmark, the inhabitants are de facto members of the EU. If you think the EU is annoying at your end of things, consider how unbearable it is on the Mainland - even if one is a Nosferatu tucked away in the Carpathians. The EU is a huge swindle perpetrated by the Belgians, and that is an especially damning fact. Posted by: Count Orlok at January 12, 2025 11:07 PM (mk4vr) 230

Posted by: Captain Han Solo, Millenium Falcon This line in Star Wars has troubled me since May 1977. Because it is crap. A parsec is a measure of distance, not of time. I knew that from college physics when Star Wars was initially released. Posted by: Pedantic Gref Actually, they retconned that by making "the Kessel Run" a smuggling route through a region of space with several black holes. So a better ship and pilot could fly closer to them without falling into any of the black holes, and a shorter distance was thus a better result. For all you climate change doomsayers: California has been OUT of a drought since 2022. We’ve seen record rainfall, yet the CA Dept of Water Resources, big city mayors, and the governor have failed to use that water to increase ground hydration and strengthen emergency fire services.
They looked the other way despite warnings from universities, fire departments, farmers, and consultants offering actionable plans. It’s mind-boggling negligence. I don't think anybody anticipates the military conquest of Greenland. It's more a matter of asking the folks in Greenland whose umbrella they want to be under, and telling Denmark (like the rest of Europe) to go blow.

Chicks like in that picture, and many times with tube tops. Just about every car in my high school parking lot was a classic muscle car, only they were just 8-10 year old used cars at the time. I paid $350 for my 68 GTO, not including the odd and even license plates which I needed that year, thanks to the draugur thats being carted around DC as we speak. Music for the most part was good. The bad? Again, jerkoff jimmy carter, disco, some of the fashions, that jerkoff carter, the economy, and...did I mention that jerkoff carter? I’m gonna say this even though there are already a bajillion comments. I was born in 1964 and we knew we were Generation X in high school. When I studied economics in college in 1983-86 in college, the Boomers were folks who parents fought WW2 and started popping out lots of kids. Those folks enjoyed the Post War 1950s Happy Days and the faced the Draft and the Vietnam War. I grew up watching B&W TV and then color. I enjoyed the first video games, while Boomers played pinball in their youth. Instead of Muscle Cars, I had 4 cylinders that could barely get out of their way along with gas lines, high inflation, high interest rates and unemployment that folks today are only just starting to understand. I got laid off while Boomers continued on in their jobs. Then started again only to watch myself get laid off again and again because I was always the lowest in seniority. I’d get hired and watch an older Boomer retire with a full pension and a huge 401k plan, while I had no pension and a 401k that kept losing most of its value when the latest bust occurred. But at least in high school I experienced MTV when they really played Rock n Roll music videos. Now I’m told I’m a Boomer

People used to make homemade guitars (or maybe more of a dobro) out of those ham cans -- the full-sized ones.
I'm not sure what happened to those. They were a staple when I was a kid. The only canned hams I've seen in a long time are those tiny Danish ones. You couldn't even make a uke out of one of those wimpy little things. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at January 12, 2025 11:58 PM (W5ArC) 345

Or maybe 2000 years. Who's to say??? Posted by: Diogenes Orlok will tell you from bitter experience that the Little Ice Age was a bitch and a half. I still shiver when I remember going to the privy during that era. And the throng of peasant mobs continually storming Castle Orlok was no walk in the park either. "Two Four Six Eight, Make Out Temps Elevate," they would chant while waving their pitchforks and torches. Orlok still does not fully understand why they always went to those implements. Oh, I am going to storm the Nosferatu's castle, quickly let me get a pitchfork and light a torch for the siege and investment. I would kindly explain to them that weather control is not in my wheelhouse, but that led only to more chanting and accidental burnings and puncture injuries. I would eventually shrug and have my minions rain down the boiling oil and molten lead on them, which ended matters until the next time. Oh, and watch my movie - the guy that played Pennywise is attempting to embody me on camera. That is depressing, but Orlok may get paid this time. Advantages and disadvantages of different molten/boiling liquids for raining down upon your foes:
Boiling Water Advantage: cheap. Disadvantages: may be in short supply if the siege has been going on for a while. Not really all that hot. Boiling Piss Advantage: even cheaper, never in short supply. Disadvantages: boiling it produces a stench that affects your own team. Again, not really that hot. Boiling Oil Advantage: sticks (think napalm). Can be made much hotter than water or piss. Disadvantage: expensive. Requires capital investment ahead of time. Molten lead: Advantages: reusable (just wait for it to harden and pick it up), can be made far hotter than boiling piss or water. Disadvantage: expensive, again high capital investment (somewhat mitigated by the fact that it can be reused). Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at January 13, 2025 12:21 AM (W5ArC) 383

I’ve been finding it interesting to read about the Santa Ynez reservoir somebody was talking about today.
It was used for drinking water, so the EPA required a cover over it. Keep debris and bird droppings out.It became ripped, and thus not legal to consume. They let a contract for the repair and it isn’t done yet. That’s why they drained it. It was scheduled to go back online in February. The Union guy said the repair should have been done inhouse. Also required chlorination. It seems silly to me to try and maintain such a large reservoir of potable water this way. Why not treat the water close to the end user? They interviewed a retired DPW guy who claims even if it was full, “it wouldn’t have saved the day” that seems to me a bit of a questionable thing. It’s sort of a tautology. The claim is that the fire was too big, therefore. Well, maybe it wouldn’t have got out of control if they had water in the hydrants in the first place. And undoubtedly some homes would have otherwise been spared. I bet that would have saved their day. Posted by: Common Tater at January 13, 2025 12:42 AM (dY3L3) 404

Technically I'm in the lat of the boomers, but its also a cultural thing too. I took a test one time to see where I really fit, and you answer a bunch of questions, like what movies or TV shows you watched as a kid, what music you like, and a bunch of other questions. I came in as a solid GenX, I had very little to nothing in common with a boomer, and what I did have in common with a boomer was just because I was just old enough to witness certain events. Another thing I think about when they say boomers screwed the country. Look around, these carcasses sauntering around the halls of power in DC that fucked this place up are silent generation, not even boomers. Ever sing in the shower and hit that "resonant tone" that sort of echoes off the tiles? Suppose you could control and focus a sound wave to only effect something with a very specific atomic weight just like a resonant tone. Identify the genome that is instrumental in cancer...zap it with a sound wave and kill it with a resonant tone only applicable to the universal atomic weight of the genome. Do the same with viruses, bacteria. All you need to know is the atomic weight....zap it all gone, nothing else effected. Told you I was nuts. Posted by: Orson at January 13, 2025 12:46 AM (dIske) 407

B-D Yup. Guitars need an overnight, I think, to settle in or sweeten up after tuning a major change.
I can’t figure out how anybody figured these tunes out before YT. If all you got is a record player. Jeeze louise. “What the F is he doing?” I like open tunings. But I gots one guitar. Swapping around to a buncha different tunings all the time trashes them quickly. Posted by: Common Tater at January 13, 2025 01:04 AM (dY3L3) 418

>>I could be wrong, but I would ask if you could find another descriptive name for the perps that doesn't tarnish "MAGA". The brand is going to take a lot of hits in the next 4 years, I would rather not add to the damage.
I agree with a lot of what you said but this last part I disagree. We were told all throughout the campaign that if Trump got the nomination he would lose. That was obviously wrong. He won in a landslide. Those who keep insisting despite all evidence this isn't a really popular movement have no idea what they are talking about. Restoring this country is not some wild eyed, crazy idea. It's extremely popular. Just because those of who support it don't control the media most say they hate doesn't mean it isn't true. It obviously is. The MAGA brand means nothing more than being proud of this country and the traditional values it was founded on and it is much more popular than talking heads on teevee told everyone it is. That's why we won so big despite the cheating. I'm not defensive. I'm defiant. And I'm going to enjoy all the winning. Posted by: JackStraw at January 13, 2025 01:10 AM (LkLld) 421
Changing the tuning in major ways around all the time, trashes the strings I mean.
One tune in standard that I’ve never heard anybody duplicate is the isolated acoustic track on Ramble On. It’s maybe 5 minutes, never plays the phrase quite the same way twice. I wonder if maybe there are two acoustic guitars or overdubs. Maybe, I don’t think so. Posted by: Common Tater at January 13, 2025 01:12 AM (dY3L3) 422

Posted by: Common Tater at January 13, 2025 01:04 AM (dY3L3) Thats why most of the 7 guitars in the rack are what I call junkers. Mostly decent cheaper things I accumulated over the years that I would never play live or record with. Metal bands are tuned all over the map these days. E, Eb, D, C#, C, Cb, and with lower tuning you need a heavier gauge string, and that means possible nut slot adjusting, and truss rod adjustments, etc. Yeah, not doing that to my good guitars which I keep tuned to E. Let the junkers handle it. Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at January 13, 2025 01:16 AM (VwHCD) Posted by: Ciampino - at January 13, 2025 01:17 AM (i0xsb) 425

Should hear from the surgeon a week from Monday. She internalizes all of this. She isn’t Catholic and has no source of peace or forgiveness. But she’s also stubborn as fuck. I will go down if she is gonna get holes drilled in her skull. Fuck. So, praying. At least for her sense of peace.

Morning, insomaniacals! 'Tis the Moon's Day. LIght showers have passed, according to the local CBS outlet's radar, and it's 51 F. Wet, but good workout weather. I wish I felt more like doing that, but you go with what you got.
Believe me, I remember the '70s! At least the parts where I was sober. AM and FM radio music tied us together, people were slim. Yes, there was inflation compared to the Sixties, but you could still buy a large bag of Doritos for .79 and a fifth of Old Crow for less than $5. Compared to now, .55/gal. for gasoline in 1976 seems unbelievable . . . but a midsize car now gets mileage that would have seemed wild fantasy back then. I was a young man, making my own choices (at least the ones my then-wife No. 1 didn't argue me out of), making my own money for the first time. Seemed pretty great. And the first half of the '80s seemed even better. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 13, 2025 03:55 AM (omVj0) 456

The moon has a day? I thought it had them all. The inflation then was but a foreshadowing of what is now. The overall mileage has not changed for most classes of cars, they just throw in some special car classes and lie about the numbers. Posted by: somejoe at January 13, 2025 04:03 AM (RCAte) 460

Strange to see "Trumpers" and "conservatives" bitching that we don't all believe the same thing. Isn't that exactly what is wrong with the libs?? No matter what--abortion, child molestation, illegals invading, turning beautiful cities into hellholes to "save the homeless," etc. --they ALL vote for it and agree with it on penalty of being "cancelled". I, for one, am glad we have some business folks in the government who bring fresh ideas and don't rely on the old ways of just throwing more money at the politicians to solve everything. I don't agree with everything they say and I am glad I--and lots of "conservatives" don't!
