Karma is a bitch. Washington Post Cartoonist Who Depicted Trump As a Sexual Predator Busted for Child Porn You cannot make this up. Then again, nothing should be shocking, but it’s always nice to see the corrupt liberal media get their comeuppance. This incident doesn’t involve a writer or a television host; it’s a cartoonist. Sure, it’s not a massive scalp like taking down someone at CNN or MSNBC, but it’s a little more ironic when said person depicts Trump as a sexual predator, only to get busted for child pornography. The cartoonist Darren Bell is a Pulitzer Prize winner and the first black man to receive the award (via NBC Bay Area): Can the Restaurant Reservation Anti-Piracy Act Finally Fix Reservations? Ask anyone what the biggest problem facing restaurants today is, and they’ll inevitably say the same thing: bots, specifically those ones that are always scooping up online reservations at places like Carbone, Polo Bar, downtown’s Polo Bar clone Corner Store, Cote, and Don Angie. At some of New York’s trendiest restaurants, tables — besides a few strays at opening and close — seem to disappear within ten seconds. Now, Governor Kathy Hochul has finally done something about this crisis: As Eater NY reports, she’s signed the Restaurant Reservation Anti-Piracy Act into law. Through the law, which was passed by the State Legislature over the summer, Hochul promises that the state will “put an end to the predatory market” so that ordinary people can eat at these trendy restaurants. Through platforms like Resy, resellers snatch up reservations using bots, then peddle them to consumers who fork over hundreds to thousands of dollars for tables. It could get down to - 20 and I wouldn’t care except southern homes aren’t built with cold temps in mind. I want a house built to withstand cold like the science bases in the Antarctica. I hate having to wrap my outdoor pipes and faucets, drip water all night or if it’s going to be a hard freeze ( relatively speaking for the south) where the temps will be well below freezing for over 24 hours, you shut your water off and bleed all of it out so you don’t run the high risk of a burst pipe.

A story about restaurant reservations. 1990. The ex's birfday (month, according to her). Anyway, many months before, I made reservations for 8 p.m. on a Saturday (as the Billy Joel song goes) at the Russian Tea Room; that is prime time in the Manhattan restaurant biz. We get there 15 minutes before and check in. The whoever asked my name and checked The Book. Told me he was sorry but no reservation for that name. I said can I look at The Book? He turned it toward me and my name was first! He apologized profusely. My name looks Russian, but I'm not. When my ex hit the can, I went back to this same guy and said today's my ex's birfday. He asked, what can I do for you? I told him, I was going to ask him that. He said a piece of chocolate cake and two glasses of champaigne good? I said perfect. They came later, a big surprise for her (candle and all), and they weren't on the bill.

I was watching an old documentary from the 80s about American dialects, back before the Internet annihilated them all.
It had two segments on Pittsburgh. One was four old ladies from down Southside. The other was three teenage girls, from an unspecified area. From the sound of them, I'd guess up northeast from Pittsburgh in Allegheny county. I used to stew in those accents as a little kid, before I left for the mountains in Colorado, and then Appalachia. Nothing sounds like them anywhere else, even in the rest of PA. Once I was hearing them again on this video, I was captivated. I ended up sitting there through those entire segments for overcame hour, because it took me right back to being a little 10yo yinzer. 68 I was watching an old documentary from the 80s about American dialects, back before the Internet annihilated them all.
Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice Yea, those accents didn't quite make it up to Lawrence County, for the most part. Posted by: Puddleglum at work at January 18, 2025 10:36 PM (C26rB) 98

Back in the 80s big pharma came up with a flu vaccine that killed three people. They banned it and everyone in DC blamed everyone else except themselves for it. Part of the answer was VARS, because it turns out it is hard to monitor vaccine side effects without individuals reporting them. The clot shot killed thousands. The German language is actually very flexible about the positioning of words.
Im writing a bit right now on Latin in the Catholic mass, and why word order seems to not matter nearly as much as in English. Nouns change their endings depending on whether theyre being used as the subject, the direct object, or various indirect object forms. And their adjective, besides matching gender as in any Romance language, also match that. Which means it doesnt really matter where a noun is in a sentence because its purpose is in its ending. And it doesnt matter which side of a noun its adjectives appear on, because which noun its attached to is obvious from its ending. Oddly enough, Spanish also lost its declensions and case endings, and I don't know why. Vulgar Latin and Gothic were both inflected languages, but no where as close as Old Norse and Saxon. Maybe the Moorish conquest had something to do with that, Portuguese is very similarly non inflected, though unlike English they both retained very complex verb tenses and forms.

English is still cased on the possessive pronouns, and with the singular ones, to an extent. That's where you also find gender. It's all been melted out of the rest of the language, for the most part. But the further you go back the more you hear the old German cases and genders, particularly prior to Shakespearean English.

Orlok is about to watch the new SNL tonight. My God, it is starting off with a skit about MSNBC. Dave Chappelle is to be the host, so maybe this is just a weak beginning. Orlok knows, though, that he is probably lying to himself. Once Dennis Miller left the show and they fired Norm Macdonald, the show was running on fumes. Tina Fey was able to restart the show's collective pulse. but after she left, the funny went with her. (I will not lie - if that one visited the Carpathians, Orlok would show up to inquire about a blood donation, if you know what I mean... which would unfortunately be exactly what it sounds like.)
Now Chappelle is doing the opening monologue, and it is somewhat funny. He is mining the LA fires for material, and it showcases his talent. Yet Orlok is still not confident. I tell you these things, but I do not intend live-blogging the program. First of all, Orlok is a Nosferatu, and therefore cannot live-blog anything. Secondly, Undead blogging would be seen as tedious, and I would not inflict that upon my Horde friends. Orlok will continue to watch, but he will probably flip over later to the Heroes and Icons Channel to catch up on "The Rat Patrol." Posted by: Count Orlok at January 18, 2025 11:54 PM (mk4vr) 250

No refund if the reservation is resold. 3. Not my circus, not my monkeys. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 18, 2025 11:55 PM (8zz6B) 251
We still do have a few gendered nouns left over, but generally in the form of suffixes. Waiter and waitress, for instance. Or steward, with no suffix, and stewardess, with the gendered suffix.
But then, we have some oddball ones that hung over from German. The noun "doctor" is masculine, but English speakers don't say "doctress," even though it would be correct. And we say "dominatrix," but not dominator. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at January 18, 2025 11:56 PM (BI5O2) 252

We still do have a few gendered nouns left over, but generally in the form of suffixes. Waiter and waitress, for instance. Or steward, with no suffix, and stewardess, with the gendered suffix.
Blond (male) and blonde (female), though you can only tell them apart in writing. But then, we have some oddball ones that hung over from German. The noun "doctor" is masculine, but English speakers don't say "doctress," even though it would be correct. And we say "dominatrix," but not dominator. 'Oopsie,' make that two more landings than take-offs for Air Force One. In 1954, Ike was aboard Columbine II, a Constellation, with a standard Air Force flight designation, and got caught up in air traffic control with a commercial flight bearing the same flight number. The pilot, frustrated with ATC and not wanting to say "The President is on board," announced his call sign with authority as "Air Force One," and that named the class.
So, that flight left the ground with a standard designation and landed as Air Force One. It appears to have happened twice. Posted by: Way,Way Downriver at January 19, 2025 12:25 AM (zdLoL) 286

Reminds me of my younger days, a buddy who had visited family (lots of cousins) back east somewhere for the summer returned and said, "LCD, you HAVE to listen to this song! It's by a guy named Frank Zappa." I had never heard of him before, having listened to a steady of English rock like Zep, Tull, Trower, Stones, with some American RandR like Deep Purple, Skynyrd, Allman Bros. But nothing, and I mean nothing, was ever like Zappa. And he played, on his cassette tape, "Yellow Snow." I was amused, amazed, and very well entertained. There is a pretty high level of separatist sentiment in Western Canada, particularly in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Maybe 20% of voters right now would not dismiss secession out of hand. Possibly more. A good marketing campaign by Trump could turn that into annexationist sentiment. One real good point in favor of annexation is that Alberta and Saskatchewan are landlocked, no seaports, and shipping goods through a hostile rump of Canada would be problematic. If Alberta and Saskatchewan join the USA, we have access to ports on 3 coasts, via existing highways and rail lines. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 19, 2025 01:33 AM (8zz6B) 335

Stacey Abrams could become a Princess of Mars. Her martian name could be Majah Thighwacks.

True, but i agree with Kurt Schlichter: Am I the only one who thinks it’s too quiet? The Dems are barely whining. Cons are popping corks. There’s a positive vibe. But they are tweaking the events. And the incompetents/malicious are still in charge… I’m on edge. I don’t like it. Too quiet. Posted by: The ARC of History! at January 18, 2025 10:52 PM (uxCna) EXACTLY! If Abrams became a moon, Mars would go spinning off into Saturn crashing into the debris rings.

199 Trump got the first ride on an Air Force plane (not yet Air Force One) of his new term.
Trivia: Air Force One has landed one more time that it has taken off. How can that be? I am glad that last night I slept until almost 4:00 EST. Hoping that the snow holds off until after church. One year it always seemed to snow on Saturday night into Sundays so we either didn't have church or it really cut down on church attendance. It must have been easier when people lived in the neighborhood and walked to church.

It's only a bullshit meme, but that graphic about how stoic Wisonsoners are about cold and how pussified Floridians are is a load of horseshit. I live in Tampa, have been or many years, but I grew up in Ohio. Floridians dress the same no matter if it's 90s or 30s: shorts, t-shirt, flip flops. We might put in a sweater or a sweatshirt if it gets near freezing. It's the flipping Northerners like WS-ites I see a the last few weeks all bundled up with winter coats and scarves. Most Floridians (me included) don't even OWN a flippin winter coat. We just dress how we dress. We don't layer clothes. It's a real funny trope about Florida man, but we laugh at you idiots scraping your windshields, shoveling snow, stamping your slush sodden boots and winter socks to try to get some life in your toes and blowing on your numb fingers. We only have to walk to our cars to our house and back. We turn on the AC once we get in. Maybe run the defroster to take the fog off the windshield, then it's AC on low baby, no matter what the temp.
