Nikolai Ge was born in Voronezh to a Ukrainian noble family of French origin. His grandfather immigrated to Russian Empire during the 18th century. His grandfather, Osip Ge, married Daria Korostovtseva, the daughter of the Poltava landowner Yakov Korostovtsev. The father of the artist Nikolai Osipovich Ge was married twice. After the death of his first wife Elena Sadovska (mother of the artist), the family moved to his father's estate in the village Popelyuhy, Podolia Governorate (now Vinnytsia Oblast),

The lighting is so effective here. Mostly dark, some moonlight bleeds through the trees in the background setting mood. t almost looks like there's a slight fog in the air. Eerie. Then you have the direct spotlight on Jesus' face, but it only catches a small portion. Just enough to light up his eye. He looks tired. To me, He's staring. Lost in thought. Possibly seeing what is to come. I love Ge's decision to only use black and white. Not even grey. This is a simple but powerful piece. I'm bookmarking this one.

The bleak darkness of this image captures Our Lord’s mood when he went to pray that night.

This is an astonishing painting. At first I thought it was a staged black and white photograph. Ge's use of gentle moonlight against the darkness engulfing Christ creates the tension and fear (?) that the viewer cannot ignore. The one brighter area on Christ's face is the only way to show the termoil of the event. The thick, solid trees add an element of menace surrounding the figure as an example of the forces against him. The scene is quiet but that just highlights what the viewer knows is the enormous pressure of the moment.
The power of this painting is off the scales. I have to learn more about the artist and his other works. How is the artist not better known? This painting alone has the effectiveness of a Rembrandt and the subtlety of an Andrew Wyeth. There was someone in my neighborhood who had attachment to the then-current administration. Such attachment was intolerable to Code Pink and they planned a protest (keep in mind this is a residential neighborhood). They posted the timing for everyone to see and advertised via social media. It happened to be in February. In the cold. And damn it, I should have seen that it was going to be 12 degrees overnight and I STILL forgot to turn the hose off. The darned sidewalk had ice about an inch thick. It was fun to watch. I sat on my front porch with a space heater and a cigar. Posted by: WitchDoktor at January 14, 2025 10:32 AM (PzXaK) 202

I’ve a love/hate relationship with England…I really like the Brits but despise the royalty for being a crew of pompous parasites. But it’s the Brits themselves who have enabled that monstrous anachronistic institution to continue and metastasize. So, it’s kind of a mixed bag from my POV. Bill Penzey is sending boxes of 27 "RESIST!" spice packets to selected customers of his. In the box is this note:
"Two Possible Futures Ahead! One where those who believe in the promise of America give up. One where they don't. We chose your home for this box because your backyard is where America's fate is to be determined. Please find a place to pop this open and share with people in need of a tasty seasoning to brighten their day. Sprinkle RESIST! heavily on hummus or chopped avocado and it will be spicy. Sprinkle it on a burger, or wings, or vegetables before roasting and its heat fades with cooking leaving just wonderful tastiness. Use RESIST everywhere by itself or alongside your favorite seasonings to add a new spark. RESIST! is good. Sorry to add more to your plate, but you know this matters. Thanks for being our customer. Bill Hopefully CBD will be able to review RESIST! for us in an upcoming Food Thread. Posted by: Duncanthrax at January 14, 2025 10:40 AM (a3Q+t) 248

Britain spent the 1700s trying to wring us dry. They spent the 1800s trying to make sure we didn't flourish. They spent the 1900s trying to use our military to their ends. Well, Ge was certainly a religious painter and Mount of Olives (or Mount Olivet) is certainly a very religious place.
From Wikipedia, in part, "Several key events in the life of Jesus, as related in the Gospels, took place on the Mount of Olives, and in the Acts of the Apostles it is described as the place from which Jesus ascended to heaven. Because of its association with both Jesus and Mary, the mount has been a site of Christian worship since ancient times and is today a major site of pilgrimage for Catholics, the Eastern Orthodox, and Protestants." (Reading all re: Mt. Olive is suggested.) Wouldn't hang this particular painting but would be interested in seeing much of Ge's body of work in a gallery. Thanks. Britain spent the 1700s trying to wring us dry. They spent the 1800s trying to make sure we didn't flourish. They spent the 1900s trying to use our military to their ends. They've spent the 2000s doing the same - just another failed European state that demands our protection while they lecture us for our backwardness.
This whole "shared language" thing doesn't make them our natural ally in any way, shape, or form. Man, some of you really hold a grudge. The Brits have their faults, to be sure, but they're better than most of mankind, and have done much that makes our lives better. I wish people would remember the examples of Sinema and Manchin.
Rogue, independent thinkers on the Democrat side. Did we ever wonder if they would vote against Trump's impeachment? Or against Kentaji on SCOTUS? In other news
Boeing seems to have stepped on their wang again. The FDR and CVR for the Jeju 737 stopped recording 4 minutes prior to impact due to loss of power. Boeing in their 'wisdom' did not install a Ram Air Turbine on their 737s figuring the battery and APU would suffice in case all electrical power from the engines was lost. Except years ago there already had been a crash of a 737 with the exact same power layout of the Jeju 737. Plane lost power in an extreme storm as the rain snuffed the engines out. Crew tried to start the APU but instead all power was lost. Somehow they still managed to crash with survivors to tell the tale. Testing of the battery backup revealed one cell was bad and thus there was not enough energy. So once again Boeing has failed to learn. Posted by: Anna Puma at January 14, 2025 10:58 AM (eEdHS) 316

I don’t know about that. As a Pennsylvanian, I’m exposed to interviews, statements to the press, other sources of info that might elude most of the nation’s other residents. I detect a different tone from Fetterman. I think he was really rocked by the vitriol he received from his own party over the hostage posters he papered his office with. And that was way before the Trump electoral smackdown and Casey being dethroned. The demorats pushed Musk and Rogan out of their ranks. I’m not suggesting Fetterman will become full throated MAGA like those 2 media moguls…however I do expect we will be pleasantly surprised by his actions the coming months. Well then - lets count 'er up, shall we ? Where to begin ? I guess, since the United States didn't exist in ANY form until Washington and crew ran the Brits off the mainland, we'll just ignore all the Revolutionary War stuff. We've got the War of 1812. The Brits were "kind" enough to send observers during the Civil War. They were accommodating enough to make us a little room to jump into WW I at Belleau Woods. And they were down-right giddy to offer us all their military expertise - including really helpful attempts to assume command of all US forces - during WW II. After that - they rode along as part of NATO while we paid to keep them safe from those nasty Russians. Ooh, I almost forgot - they're an enthusiastic member of Five Eyes. I wish those Brits would just quit doing so much good for me. Posted by: History at January 14, 2025 11:05 AM (7LnUu) 350

The Agony in the Garden always bugged me. I get the sentiment we're meant to take from it, but how the heck do we know what happened? Jesus is the only one awake, only he knew what he prayed for, and the next thing that happens is his apprehension when Judas comes with Roman soldiers. How do the gospel authors fill in that time with profound events no one witnessed? Are we supposed to believe that the resurrected Jesus filled the apostles in later on before the Ascension?
