Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at January 13, 2025 09:34 AM (D6PGr) 18
The first automat in the United States was opened by food services company Horn & Hardart on June 12, 1902, at 818 Chestnut St. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Inspired by Max Sielaff's automat restaurants in Berlin, they were among the first 47 restaurants (and the first outside of Europe) to receive patented vending machines from Sielaff's Berlin factory.

Hopper! Knew it when I saw it, partly because I know this painting. But not many other artists I'm familiar with capture that sense of alienation and "aloneness by night" like he does.
The overhead lights seem to march off into the darkness. They're the reflection of the automat's overhead lights, but it's still unsettling. There's also the dim reflection of some kind of box in the glass, a green light shining at one corner -- I guess that's part of the automat dispensing machinery? Or is that something actually outside the window? Seems kind of low to the ground for a green traffic light, though. I'm not a big Hopper fan because of his usual big city related material which has little appeal for me. But his ability to capture the feeling he wants is wonderful. The subdued colors and small figure(s), often at night, surrounded by the huge cityscape gives the viewer a sense of the isolation, perhaps ennui, of the people. But his interesting use of reflected light and spots of color (the white table top, the bowl of fruit and the yellow steam radiator) keeps the scene from becoming too depressing.
And like Fraser Crane in comment 10, I like that radiator. Posted by: JTB at January 13, 2025 09:44 AM (yTvNw) 68

So Cal Edison power lines were at fault for a previous, massive wildfire— well, that and severe drought and Santa Ana winds.
What SoCalEd does now: They turn off the power in our neighborhood when the wind kicks up. The longest was 36 hours, which was a pain in the butt — but no fire, and especially no fire that could be traced to them. When that "manage the forests better" comes from GOP Pols in Ohio, where they get rain & have rivers, I wanna throttle the idiots. Homeowners must do a better job clearing their spaces. I don't think controlled burns are a possibility in those tight residential canyons — unless we can throw lots of money and personnel at the problem. The plants are built to burn. They evolved with regular wildfires. It's part of the life cycle of many indigenous plant species. There's not much you can do when it comes to the natural environment. Going forward, California is going to have to learn to live with increased wildfire, thanks to fossil fuel companies and petro-states. The real culprits in all this. It can be done without destroying the natural environment. It's a matter of codes, landscaping and building materials. some would say it's that illustrators are following a set instruction - "image of Captain Bligh" - while fine artists are just working from "their imaginations." those people would however not argue that Michelangelo is an illustrator so! mostly it's people being sort of snobby. Cornell Woolrich/William Irish had a 1940s short story called "The Dancing Detctive." The lead (and narrator, I think) is a girl working at one of those dime-a-dance places, and she spots a patron as a wanted killer. The problem: The patron knows she's recognized him. More of a suspense story than a classical detective tale, but tense and exciting like a lot of Woolrich/Irish.

Ambiguous. A good word for this Monday.
Do like the painting & would certainly view in the gallery but wouldn't hang it. Wikipedia, in part, "Automat is a 1927 oil painting by the American realist painter Edward Hopper. The painting was first displayed on Valentine's Day 1927 at the opening of Hopper's second solo show, at the Rehn Galleries in New York City. By April it had been sold for $1,200 ($21,048 in 2023 dollars [1]).[2] The painting is today owned by the Des Moines Art Center, in Iowa. The painting portrays a lone woman staring into a cup of coffee in an automat at night. The reflection of identical rows of light fixtures stretches out through the night-blackened window. Hopper's wife, Jo, served as the model for the woman.[3] However, Hopper altered her face to make her younger (Jo was 44 in 1927). He also altered her figure; Jo was a curvy, full-figured woman, while one critic has described the woman in the painting as "'boyish' (that is, flat-chested)".[4] As is often the case in Hopper's paintings, both the woman's circumstances and her mood are ambiguous...." I have been intending to watch that series for awhile now. Watched some of the original dragnet series during the 50's and you got to see quite a few Hollywood fixtures just starting out as bit players.
Original Dragnet series had a harder edge than the later 60's show and often verbatim replays of the older Dragnet radio show scripts. Posted by: whig at January 13, 2025 *** Peter Gunn was fun -- more about the quirky and memorable characters Gunn knows and meets during the course of an episode than it is about him, but still with nice B & W photography, smartly directed and written. The original Dragnet was tough stuff, long before Miranda warnings and protections for arrestees. No, I don't think Friday and his partner ever used rubber hoses on anybody, but they certainly used psychological pressures to get suspects to talk. 378 366 Why ruin strawberry pie by adulterating it with rhubarb?
Posted by: Anna Puma Same reason that people add carrot to a spice cake to make carrot cake. Rhubarb has astringency which somehow melds with strawberries (and a bunch of sugar) to make something different in taste. Carrots do the same to a spice cake recipe. Potato flour is also not unknown in being used for cakes, etc. Posted by: whig at January 13, 2025 10:45 AM (ctrM5) Hate to be an outlier here, but strawberry rhubarb pie is one of my all time favorites. I love Edward Hopper's work. I'm from Chicago, and I grew up looking at Hopper's "Nighthawks" in the Art Institute. (It's hanging not far from Grant Wood's "American Gothic".) Hopper paid the bills by doing magazine illustrations, and it's often said that his paintings are illustrations of stories that have never been written. Hopper also did a series of paintings of lighthouses, of all things, which are quite lovely.
