We need a Saturday Night Joke.
Nuclear power? A stranger was seated next to little Johnny on the plane when the stranger turned to little Johnny and said, "Let's talk. I've heard that flights will go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger." Little Johnny, who had just opened his book, closed it slowly, and said to the stranger. "What would you like to discuss?" "Oh, I don't know," said the stranger. "How about nuclear power?" "OK," said little Johnny. "That could be an interesting topic. But let me ask you a question first. "A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat grass. The same stuff. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, and a horse produces clumps of dried grass. Why do you suppose that is?" "Jeez," said the stranger. "I have no idea." "Well, then," said little Johnny, "How is it that you feel qualified to discuss nuclear power when you don't know shit?" It's kind of funny, but even evil liars still want to gravitate towards the truth. For example, there is no reason why one should delve into how one's kids are conceived - its kind of known. But Michelle made a point of saying that both her kids were IVF, which naturally feeds the notion that she never had sex with her husband. Why put that out there at all? No one was talking about IVF. But, if you like to walk around with a strap-on, implying that your husband is gay and daring him to address it is fun. All these people are filled with spite. It's the only thing they enjoy. We have a pretty large deer herd here that wanders around the neighborhood. They will walk right by you and are indiferent to humans. About 4 of them were in the neighbors yard when the kids came home. Those stupid kids went nuts trying to chase them off. The deer went nuts being cornered and the big buck reared back on his hind legs. I was like oh shit and screamed for them to get their asses away and inside. They listen to me unlike they do with their parents and did what I said. The deer cleared out and I went over with the wife's Ipad and showed them what a deer can do when cornered like that. Couple of videos of hunters and such getting the shit stomped out of them.
I don't think they will fuck with the deer again. I hope. Posted by: Reforger at January 11, 2025 10:50 PM (xcIvR) 135

He was a popular high school athlete and in 1982, he accepted a scholarship to play middle linebacker for the Oregon State Beavers. Everyone had slaves. Everyone.
----- Not everyone was wholly dependent on slavery to the point where it intellectually and economically crippled them permanently. Where, even in ancient Greece, they couldn't effectively build in stone. Or produce any cultural output unrelated to warfare. Or grow their own crops. Or develop a money economy. In is hard to judge Athens or Sparta as better - they both had slaves and engaged in all sorts of atrocities for example when Athens defeated Melos, after a war they started, they executed the men and enslaved the women and children.
When Sparta in turn defeated Athens they installed their own leaders but let Athens survive...note that Sparta's allies were NOT happy about this and it caused them conflict down the road... Posted by: 18-1 at January 11, 2025 11:19 PM (t0Rmr) 215

Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at January 12, 2025 12:08 AM (D6PGr) Well, no. He's saying I'm not knowledgeable. Which I am. But it's also incorrect. I have the advantage of hindsight - I know what happened to the Greeks in the following wars, which they did not. The city-states spent themselves fighting the Spartan menace. They all perished shortly after because the Macedon invaded. Without Sparta, they may have prevailed. With Sparta in the mix, they couldn't - they'd lost so much fighting Sparta. It really is that simple. Sparta couldn't stop fucking with everyone until everyone fucked with them right back. And then they all perished. I discovered another drawback of the tipping bucket (well, more like "spoon" here) rain gauge. They're no good for solid precip, of course. Last night, a little after sundown, it started tripping an totaled up about 0.34". Temp got close to freezing, with freezing rain coming down, and that melted enough of the accumulated stuff in the funnel to start dripping and tripping. Now, this morning, around 9AM, it started tripping again and lasted until 2PM. That was the sunlight melting. It racked up 0.4" for a total of 0.74". That's way too much. All the other local stations around here displayed the same behavior. Some tripping last night, and then more tripping after 9AM. But they all totaled no more than 0.5" or so, save for one other one, which hit about 0.7" as well. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at January 12, 2025 12:42 AM (w6EFb) 331

It's possible it somehow got too much slush/snow/sleet inside the funnel (wind, or build up on the sides), but I don't think that's the most likely I think what happened is some ice built up in the tipping spoon, and stuck. That ice wouldn't come out when it tipped over, and so it in then tripped too much until that piece of ice melted. They've got a lot of precip only stations, and if I read it right, those are based on midnight start. In all these data reports, that should be indicated somewhere. And with the climatological day, it's always standard time, never daylight, so during DST, it's 8AM local clock time. That avoids the problem of a 23 or 25 hour local day during the changeover dates, and also keeps things synced with the sun better. It would be too confusing to go with local mean time, which would track the sun (and the dirunal behavior) perfectly for each station.
