Chinese spy network TikTok is probably dead. (Tech Crunch)

The Supreme Court heard arguments from both TikTok and the Department of Justice, but seemed disinclined to intervene in the January 19th deadline for the company to divest or be shut down.

TikTok argued that divestment was impossible because the Chinese government would never permit foreign control of network's recommendation algorithm - and also that the US subsidiary has the final say over such matters. The company also claimed that it does not operate in China, which is true insofar as it goes, because TikTok, a Chinese social network, is banned in China.

Asus has announced the ExpertCenter PN54, a new mini-PC based on AMD's new Krackan Point chips. (WCCFTech)

These chips have four Zen 5 cores running at 5GHz, and four Zen 5c cores running at 3.5GHz. Zen 5c is functionally identical to Zen 5 but built using a more compact design, so it executes exactly the same instructions in exactly the same number of clock cycles, but runs more slowly.

And eight RDNA 3.5 graphics cores.

So overall it's not an improvement over the previous generation (like the 8845HS) but might possibly be cheaper maybe.

Also, this model includes user-upgradeable SO-DIMM memory (along with two M.2 slots, two 2.5Gb Ethernet ports, two DisplayPort ports, HDMI, and USB4).

Which makes me wonder: Does the memory controller on the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 also support socketed memory? Four channels of it? 384GB of it?

That all of AMD's other mobile chips support socketed memory suggests that it might.
The problem with running AMD's faster laptop chips with socketed RAM is that they have fast integrated graphics and need lots of memory bandwidth, and socketed DDR5 RAM is slower than soldered LPDDR5X.

Or at least that used to be the case. (Tom's Hardware)

G.Skill has announced 8133MHz DDR5 CSODIMMS - the "C" stands for clock, since these modules have a clock generator chip added to them to improve stability at such a high speed.

We don't know if these modules might be compatible with AMD's latest laptop chips, but it's an interesting thing to consider.
JPMorgan Chase has said to its more than 300,000 staff, get back into the office you worthless slugs. (The Guardian)

Automattic, the domain of Mad King Matt Mullenweg and corporate parent of former blogging platform WordPress, has cut its commitment to developing that software by 99%, the equivalent of firing a hundred staff. (Automattic)

Whether they actually had a hundred staff left to fire is an open question.

King Matt said - paraphrasing - that just because Automattic owns WordPress and makes all its money off it, doesn't mean that it should be expected to do any work to update or maintain the software. Also that he only beats us because he loves us.

If Automattic goes through with this, WordPress is dead and will be forked by the community.
Education technology company PowerSchool was hacked and had its database of teacher and student information stolen. (The Register)

That's sixty million people, mostly children. Not good.

Or former children, because the attack may have been going on since 2011.

And may extend to every application the company runs.

So there's that.
Apple is uploading every photo on every Mac and iDevice to be scanned by AI without asking anyone. (The Register)

But don't worry, says Apple, it's homomorphic.

28 I’m currently at a fairly remote location where cell service seems OK, 2 bars. Works fine about dusk and overnight, till about 9 or 10 AM. During the day it will not load web pages except very intermittently and then only for a few seconds. (I load up the AOS pages, and then read them later)

What causes this? Can I string up a long wire antenna or something like that?

It's 40 F. outdoors, wind chill of 32, winds 14 mph NNW. I think I'm gonna stay indoors this morning. It'll be warmer tomorrow, though the early am temp on Sunday is supposed to be about as low as today's. We'll see. It's that wind and wind chill that's the killer, of course.

What I discovered on Thursday, that the ex-Mrs. Wolfus No. 2 passed away almost ten years ago, is still echoing in my mind. Along with, naturally, the things I wish I could have said and should have said. When I head out today I'll see about picking up a nice card for her mother and some stationery for a letter. Though what I'm going to write I have no idea.

Well, yes, but my point was the caption ,I'm guessing ,was not written by someone who either wrestles with faith or is a practicing Christian or Jew, because why would one assume that God isn't there because a church burned down? I find this about as unappealing a view as people spouting "They deserved it" which tends to get bruited about by some people on both sides of the political spectrum. It happens when natural disasters hit the South and when now it's hitting California.

That's nice (not!).

More thoughtful theologians than the idiots at the NY Post have been grappling with the Problem of Evil for thousands of years. I do have some thoughts, however:

1) God chastises a people through bad leaders (who exercise their Free Will to do evil)
2) Was this church a "church of the world" where homosexuality, pride and the "Sparkle Creed" were celebrated?
3) While you can't see it in the moment, there is a salvific value to suffering.

In the Top 40 days of the early '70s, I enjoyed picking up stations in Cleveland or Cincinnati playing new singles that hadn't made it to our local Top 40 station's playlist yet. I first heard "Stir it Up" by Johnny Nash and "Take It Easy" by the Eagles a week before my local station debuted them. Like peering into the future -- a dimly lit glimpse, but something unusual.

92 I refurbished a lot of vintage tube radios. Zenith Trans-Oceanic, lots of fun. On pure DC battery power on a mesa top, away from all forms of EMI, it is amazing. Tube audio is “better” in some ways. I rebuilt a couple wooden console radios for money, there was one that turned out LOUD, could get the cops called on ya easy.

We were a better country when Orien Samuelson would rattle off the feeder cattle prices at 5 AM in a deep booming baritone. One of the worse things about modern life is everybody talks about 3 octaves higher on the radio and TV, and they all uptalk and vocal fry and generally distract with weird affectations in speech.

When we went to St. Louis Cathedral for the marriage of her best friend in the '80s, she, Mrs. Wolfus, stopped at the little fount and crossed herself with the water. Then she muttered to me: "Don't ever tell my father I did that."

Honestly, I take buses now whenever I can. Sometimes, I use NYC handicap car service, Access-A-Ride, to go to an appointment, the bus to come home. The only train I've taken in years is the 7 from Main Street (a short bus ride from 'my' hospital) to either 90th or 82nd, which bracket my street. I am becoming afraid to take trains anymore. Never thought I'd think that. But being old, grey and disabled with a heart condition, I'm an easy target.

I haven't been out of the borough (to Manhattan) since 2018. I just don't want to take the train (E, F or 7) into Manhattan anymore.

Congestion pricing will be the final death blow to Manhattan. It's a ghost town worse than before. There is simply no traffic; more businesses are going to fail.

179 Don't know if it's been mentioned before but from Google Earth historical images, the San Ynez reservoir, a large membrane lined pond in the mountains above PP has apparently not been filled since 2009.

It looks like it was drained then to install a cover but it appears it was never filled more than a small amount after that. I suspect the cover failed or didn't work as intended and someone was keeping that quiet.

The thing worked fine until someone decided to "improve "it. Probably some green funds spread around.

Wish I had your know how.
I have a Fender Super Twin Reverb that burnt at least one power tube. It takes a total of 6, 6L6GC tubes.
I found a place I can get 4 output matched tubes but not 6.
I'm well put ever using it, at least on stage, but would be nice to have it in proper working order for when I go to sell it.
A good many years back they remade the Super Twin and the Twin Reverb (to my understanding) but not mine.
Guess no one wanted to haul the beast around.

Microwave link, either for TV or other communication links. Studio to transmitter links. Most use fiber today, but our station used a 2 gig microwave link as a backup as well.

Yes yes, I know Wordpress is ~user friendly~, but that ~user friendliness~ is what also makes it a cracker's playground. With all the ways you have to harden it just to hopefully fend off SQL injections, you're better off biting the bullet and just learning Joomla.
