CES is apparently still going, but nothing is happening. Maybe they could try turning it off and on again.

AI TVs were announced. That is...never mind, they should just leave it unplugged.

6 Evening and morning, late toilers, early risers, and plain ol' insomaniacals. 'Tis Thor's Day, and we are 4/5 of the way to the weekend (or will be once this work day is over).

Not as chilly here this morning, 39 F. w/ wind chill of 31. Tomorrow morning's low is expected to be around 47; perhaps I can go work out for the first time since Sunday.

64 There is a pro liberty argument to be made for strict isolationism... go ahead, be a craphole of a country. Get taken over by nutjobs and fall into dystopia. What serves the purposes of maximizing human liberty and prosperity more? Building a vast military hegemony to smack around every country who does something we don't like? Or to let them alone, be as prosperous and free as we can possibly be on our own, and serve as an almost literal beacon of liberty to inspire the masses abroad to rise up against their own oppressors?

How many oppressive empires crumbled before 1776?

81 I must confess, the shiny new-ness of GPU launches always entice, but then I think... "Why?" It ain't worth forking over 3 grand (those things never go for MSR) when there's maybe two games per year worth buying (if we're lucky), and my 2080 Ti still handles everything at high settings with ease. If China invades Taiwan and we can't get new GPUs for 10 years, I am perfectly happy going back to playing Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight, because that game is STILL the bee's knees after 30 years.

106 "LA fired over 1,000 of its best firefighers because they wouldn’t get the Covid shot.
CA governor Gavin Newscum gives away a significant portion of CA’s fire fighting equipment to… Ukraine.
This same moron Newscum forbids forest management, so undergrowth continues to grow and die in CA hillsides, waiting for a spark to set off an inferno.
Then, LA liberals (including the Hollywood idiots whose houses have all burned to the ground) elect an affirmative action moron mayor.
This new affirmative action moron mayor cuts the fire dept budget by 24 million dollars.
The moron mayor then hires a DEI lesbian as chief of the fire department. The DEI lesbian then hires boatloads of other incompetent DEI lesbians, appointing them to key positions in the fire department.
Fire season in LA comes around, and just as raging winds arrive in LA, the new moron mayor takes a trip to Africa for some fucking reason.
Shit hits the fan, and all of LA burns: there are not enough fire fighters, there are not enough fire vehicles, the fire hydrants are going dry."

130 There is a pro liberty argument to be made for strict isolationism... go ahead, be a craphole of a country.

I think the issue is that Liberty is considered a luxury item that ironically sits behind Wealth.

Wealth is achieved through plunder, arbitrage or efficiently exploiting natural resources. All three of those can be done without Liberty.

You can have all the Liberty you want living alone on a deserted island, but its a lot of work to survive.

The whole point of international trade and the Global Order is to make sure that there are few if no deserted islands and that everyone trades with everyone else. Some countries all of a sudden they don't want to be the world's copper mine, so it takes a Intrusive Hegemony to get their minds right.
