Wildfires Devastate Huge Swaths of Los Angeles While Mayor Karen Bass Parties in Africa

Mayor Karen Bass has been on an mission-critical taxpayer-funded junket to Ghana while her city burns.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass went on a junket to Ghana as part of a Biden administration delegation to President John Dramani's inauguration despite indications that fire season was about to begin.

Bass is reportedly on her way back as of Wednesday morning and "should return to the city within hours," according to Newsweek.

Obviously she cut the budget of the fire department. As I said, we'll find out all these cuts were required to pay for illegal aliens' shelter and health care.

lm The Police LA
@FilmThePoliceLA

Karen Bass cut fire dept funding by $17.6M.

That was her 2nd biggest cut.

There are reports that fire hydrants are empty, so firemen can't spray down the fires. Apparently California passed a ballot initiative ten years ago mandating the building of additional reservoirs and aquifers so that the state would have ready reserves of water. But of course they were never built. Building reservoirs would apparently impact the very important snail darter, or was it the delta smelt? Not sure which critical fish was threatened.

Not only didn't they build more reservoirs, they refused to fill the inadequate number they currently have.

Nick Sortor
@nicksortor

#BREAKING: Los Angeles fire hydrants are OUT OF WATER because the county REFUSED to refill reservoirs, per Rick Caruso

"You can't fight a fire without water!"

The Mayor did ZERO prep despite the advanced warning of winds and fire risk.

This is EXACTLY what happened on Maui!

Bonchie
@bonchieredstate

California fails to manage brush and refuses to follow through with new reservoir builds so it can protect a tiny fish and wildfires happen, almost always started by humans.

Libs: "This is climate change."

Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump

Governor Gavin Newscum refused to sign the water restoration declaration put before him that would have allowed millions of gallons of water, from excess rain and snow melt from the North, to flow daily into many parts of California, including the areas that are currently burning in a virtually apocalyptic way. He wanted to protect an essentially worthless fish called a smelt, by giving it less water (it didn't work!), but didn't care about the people of California. Now the ultimate price is being paid. I will demand that this incompetent governor allow beautiful, clean, fresh water to FLOW INTO CALIFORNIA! He is the blame for this. On top of it all, no water for fire hydrants, not firefighting planes. A true disaster!

Power lines are sparking against trees. The power company doesn't pick up the line when citizens attempt to report the danger.

An ugly leftist woman -- is there any other kind? -- celebrated the burning of James Woods' home, apparently unaware that most of Los Angeles is even more leftwing than she is and their homes burned too.

Someone posted this highly informative instructional meme to her.

Obviously the mayor and fire chief are DEI hires who have prioritized moar DEI over doing their actual jobs.

It's just a sea of female Persons of Color and diverse lesbians as far as you can see.

It's like The Terminator:

That's an evacuation of nursing home patients.

Yep - what happened on Maui was the there had been a fire earlier in the day that drained the local water tank, and the water company had to get State permission to do an emergency refill of the water tank, due to Native Hawaiian claims to the creek that the water was drawn from.

It was a Sunday, and a bureaucrat in Honolulu denied permission to refill the tank.

From Virtue Signaling to Disaster: The Unseen Consequences of Performative Policy

I don’t tweet this lightly…..

Wildfires in California show the dangers of virtue signaling when it overrides practical policy.

Decades ago, restrictions on clearing dead brush and controlled burns were meant to protect ecosystems—a noble intention.

But the refusal to adapt these policies to current realities has led to catastrophic fires, threatening lives, homes, and habitats.

Santa Barbara's desal plant has been going through a cycle of clownbuggery for 30 years. It began construction during a drought year, and went online just before the drought broke with record rains. The water bill was more than from tapping the rain runoff so they shut down the plant, and they pulled a bunch of the equipment to resell on the used market to supplement the annual city budget. Worked fine for a few years, until the next drought year.

The bill for rebuilding the plant was more than for the original construction. Since then, they've repeated this cycle at least two or three times, and it's never stayed operational for more than a few months at a time.

Right. I have a lot more grace for people than I think most posters here do.

We need to wrap our heads around the fact that all of us have propaganda being pumped in to our heads 24/7. Some people are less equipped to try to fight it off then maybe we are.

These voters (many of whom are foreign born, or children of foreign born parents) only real exposure to politics is the overwhelming propaganda they see on late night TV and social media.

253 Santa Barbara's desal plant has been going through a cycle of clownbuggery for 30 years.

On a human level I feel bad for anyone who loses everything in a devastating event like this. Its life altering in so many ways.

But I reject the idea that people who choose to follow the left and smear us as Nazis and white supremacists bare no responsibility for their situation. They were given a brain and the ability to reason just like we were but somehow we managed to figure out the truth and had the courage to stand up to the years of smears, lies, career damage and many other harms and they did not. Because it was hard to fight the popular narrative.

We obviously aren't any of the smears the left has claimed we are for years. All you have to do is look and listen. They chose not too do either. That's on them. I don't remember seeing many of them flocking to help the people in NC who also lost everything. I do remember them mocking those people for ignoring climate change and getting what they deserve.

I feel bad for their loss but I do not forgive them for choosing their path.

304 Well, under new Regs can't get a good working Gas Heat unit... and it turns out that on Jan 1 they went to a new refrigerant... that is FLAMABLE... so new units have to install a bunch of 'check' circuits to monitor that... which has not really been large scale tested yet as its all so new.

Commercial refrigeration (like your grocer's freezer case) has used actual propane as a refrigerant for decades so I would think they'd have all that sorted out by now. Hank Hill approves.

This is at least the second time for this happening. There was a town in the sierra's a few years ago where people couldn't get out and there were like 80 deaths.

The problem in Pac Palisades is the road emptied onto PCH with a stop light so cars were backed up. No police/traffic control to keep things moving, of course. Apparently two civilian guys took it upon themselves to start directing traffic but it was too late.

McCain said he wanted to "build the danged wall" when he was campaigning, and a lot of people voted for him, then he tried to pass mass amnesty.

Like most things in life .. it's nuanced.

A lot of us voted for McCain for president. McCain of course being heavily involved in the CIA, he went on to publicly and proudly fund, arm and train "anti assad rebels" who we now call "ISIS".

There have been many ISIS terrorist attacks worldwide since McCain gave them weapons.

Do we all have it coming to us because we voted for him?*

When the rulinig party screws up badly enough yes - see the Tories in England, and the Liberal Party in Canada. But periods of closely contested races are actually rare in American Politics, the last 30 or 40 years has been an anomaly. What's more common is the 40 years after the Civil War, when with a couple exceptions the Republican Party ran the Government, and the 40 years after Hoover when the Democrat Party did the same. I suggest we're entering another 40 year period of rough stability like those were.

Parties die too but the US political structure itself (and most of the supposedly democratically elected nations) are facing the same issues--they have burned through the trust of the governed and now are unable to keep a sizable proportion of the population from knowing it.

Moving from a high trust to a low trust society inevitably has an effect on politics and political regimes at a systems level.

458 > Pretty much no one there has any insurance because the insurance companies pulled out of that market years ago because of stuff like this.

Yep. CA Prop 103 requires CA give permission for insurance companies to raise rates. Insurance companies looked at their numbers and the rate of wildfires and put in requests to raise rates. Gov't dithered, activists protested, and the companies didn't get permission. As a result, insurance companies have been pulling back, not offering new policies, etc.

So once again, government market interference has the worst possible outcome where people in wildfire areas have underinsured or uninsured property.

At renewal, the company chooses to cancel instead of renew.

Home insurance anywhere in America where the thought of natural disaster is a complete cluster because of this sort of thing.

Charleston didn't have a direct hit by a hurricane the entire time I lived there. The worst damage was downed trees for a decade across the entire area. No Hugo or anything. Insurance rates skyrocketed the entire time, accelerating over the last few years and insurance companies just kind of...stopped offering insurance. It was weird.

Most policies express the right to cancel at any time. This is especially true when the loss potential gets close to 100%. States and counties are letting people build in areas either along the coast, near water or in places with substantial fore risk, like this. That doesn’t mean the insurance companies have to take on that risk. Those contracts renew once a year. They simply refuse to renew.

545 Auto insurance went up everywhere. Two main reasons. First is inflation. The cost to repair cars skyrocketed. So as logic would dictate so did insurance that last for those costs.

And second is EVs. Those are ridiculously expensive. And it doesn’t take much to make them write off loses. A fender bender can fuck op the battery enough where the car is considered totaled. So insurance for EVs in particular is astronomic right now.

Something is really fucked behind the scenes of the insurance industry.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison
======
Insurance companies are essentially gambling joints where you pay your premiums and the House (aka insurance) takes your premiums, invests your money, and bets that it will not have to pay you. If the House loses too much in payouts, it will exit that game or exclude the player just like they did with card counters in blackjack.

Actuaries are the brains behind the superstructure and they earn the big bucks so that the insurance company makes a profit always or exits markets or individuals where the odds are that they will lose money.

Political regulatory agencies in states are either captured by the policy holders or captured by the insurance companies. In states where the policy holders try to place losses on the back of insurance companies, the companies exit. In states where the insurance companies hold sway, they ensure profits by raising rates and preventing much competition to the loss of policy holders.
