Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - January 15, 2025 [TRex]

20110709-_07092011-113844.jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.

This is the low profile Wednesday night ONT. For this one, the afterburners are lit and we are in high altitude stealth mode for minimum detection.

[Photo: Blackbird Wind Tunnel Model with noses for the YF-12, SR-71, and A-12 (left to right), Blackbird Airpark, Palmdale, CA ]

***

There seems to be a positive sentiment among the Horde towards the Lockheed Blackbird. You might sense a theme in this edition of the ONT. This is still an ONT, so feel free to comment as you wish. Just don't be a troll.

***

Depending on how you count, four main variants were built: A-12, M-21, SR-71 and YF-12A. There is more to it, but:

A-12: First iteration built for the CIA, one pilot.
SR-71: Larger for longer range and more instruments, built for the Air Force, pilot and RSO aboard.
M-21: Mothership concept to carry and launch a drone.
YF-12A: Single seat concept designed for high altitude intercepts.

Thirty surviving Blackbirds are on display, mostly around the United States. The full list is here.

How many have you seen in person? The unofficial and unaudited TRex count is 18 but none in flight.

***

***

This is an outstanding overview of the design and technical specs of a Blackbird. It is lengthy but uses three dimensional imagery to provide a detailed tour. There are some great nuggets, illustrations and explanations. For example, I had never seen a full explanation of the mixer at the rear that moves the flight control surfaces. I also never knew that the pilot had a pop up periscope to look back at the rear of the airplane.

***

The entire Skunk Works design group for the Blackbird totaled seventy-five. Design took a little more than a year.

Kelly Johnson is known for his engineering and design prowess and establishment and operation of the Lockheed Skunkworks. He always wanted to work on airplanes. At the University of Michigan, he helped a professor operate the wind tunnel. He was allowed to use the wind tunnel for his own private contracts. His first customer was Studebaker.

After graduation, he tried to get a job at Lockheed in California, but they had no job for him. It was a difficult job market. They suggested he come back in a year. He went back to Michigan for a master's program and continued working with private contracts. The aerodynamics of five Studebakers in the 1933 Indianapolis 500 were designed by Kelly.

During this time, Lockheed sent a model for wind tunnel testing to Michigan. Kelly's professor did the work. Kelly disagreed with his findings. He graduated, got the job at Lockheed and was given a chance to prove his views. He was sent back to Michigan and came up with his own successful solution.

Timeline:

April 1958 - first evidence in Kelly Johnson's notes of intent to create a U-2 successor (early code name was Archangel)

September 1959 - CIA awards a contract to Lockheed to move forward with a Mach 3+ reconnaissance aircraft under code name Oxcart

November 1959 - Lockheed puts the first full size scale model on a pylon for radar testing at Groom Lake (Area 51)

January 1960 - CIA orders an initial five A-12 aircraft (increased to a dozen the next month)

February 1962 - The first A-12 arrives at Groom Lake

April 1962 - first test flight.

February 1964 - public acknowledgement and photos

You have likely heard the Blackbird "speed check" story, but have you heard it told by Major Bryan Shul of Sled Driver frame?

Some of you were intrigued by the photo in the New Years Day edition of the ONT showing the B2 flyover of the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl. The picture is legit. Mark Holtzman has a commercial aerial photography business and has shot the Rose Bowl from above since 2009.

20250109-GgPaYzhbYAAF0Aa.jpg

How does it happen? (hat tip to Joe Pompilano):

A few weeks before the game, Mark obtains approval from various agencies, including Air Traffic Control and Pasadena Air Operations.

Those agencies set a pre-approved altitude limit that leaves sufficient vertical space between Mark and the B-2. This year, he operated at 4,500 feet, about 2,500 feet above the B-2.

Mark flies his personal Cessna 206 to the Rose Bowl and then has a copilot take over while he takes the photographs.

The Cessna does left orbits around the stadium, rotated sideways to allow the camera to look directly down. Timing is crucial.

Mark has less than two seconds to get the photo. The B-2 flies at 250 knots (287 mph).

Mark talks with the flyover pilots in advance. He is in constant contact with Air Traffic Control, but also has a discrete radio channel during flight to talk to the pilots and police on the ground.

20250109-GgtI6c6XwAAyh-M.jpg

Like baseball? Mark does other flyover shots as well. How about this one from the first game of the 2004 World Series above Dodger Stadium? The Navy did the flyover with three F18s and one F16 aggressor.

13 Nice models up top. They are similar to the models my youngest tests at the hypersonic 'wind' tunnel lab that employs him. He tried to explain what he does there but about 10 secs in it went right over my head.

He did say that for very, very, very short periods of time, some of the models are subjected to Mach 30. That's three zero.

Not bad for a kid that damn near flunked out of HS math. We learned much later that he could do it all but he was simply bored stupid and said F I.

46 My sole no-shit story about SRs. My squadron commander at Edwards, c.1980, had been an RSO during the SR flight test. One night (and as far as I know all the) sortie they experienced an aircraft problem and slightly overflew their window. They landed on the main runway with the tower closed and a metro at the far end with headlights on. Some enterprising tower supervisor decided to go to work early and got scared with an unannounced aircraft landing. He blew the crash alarms. That would be the morning of the day that Johnson announced the existence of the plane.

50 Search crews confirmed Friday they found a test model of the Avro Arrow on the floor of Lake Ontario.

The OEX Recovery Group announced their discovery at a news conference. OEX began its quest in July and had been using a small submersible to conduct its search in the waters of Lake Ontario.

“We are very pleased and tremendously proud to announce we have discovered the first example of one of the free-flight Arrow models,” John Burzynski, Raise the Arrow expedition leader and CEO of Osisko Mining said in a statement. “We hope to have other discoveries as we continue the program and are now working on planning a recovery of this first Arrow model.”

Article content
The sonar images were captured using a sonar from a Newfoundland/Labrador firm, Kraken. The sonar was on board a Kraken Autonomous Underwater Vehicle.

The model is around three metres long and two metres wide.

80 As a C-130 pilot on rotation at Mildenhall AB, Suffolk, England, UK, in the early 1980s, I saw a few SR-71 takeoffs while sitting No. 1 to take the runway. Wooo! Boy! were those effing spectacular. On one of them the runway was wet 'cause you know it rains a lot in Ol Blighty. Anyway, the SR-71 kicks up so much spray that all you see is the blue flame of the afterburners till it became airborne. On another occasion when the sky was clear, watched one takeoff and make a 270 degree turn over the airfield; the '71 was 10,000 feet or more when it crossed back over the runway.

And yes, the Blackbird leaks fuel when it is "cold". When they taxied out of the hanger they were a dripping.

82 Because the J-58 makes ever more power with every knot of speed, the plane is in fact, capable of flying itself to pieces.

I've no idea if it's the molten leading aerodynamic edges or the engine internals that'd give up first. But somewhere north of sustained Mach ?, that puppy's gonna blow.

Can you imagine the design though, with Space Shuttle ceramic tech in the high stress areas?

It would go moar fasterer!

The model is around three metres long and two metres wide.

As the article says, these models are all that survives from the Avro Canada CF-105 Arrow interceptor program. When the program was canceled in about 1960, the Canadian government ordered complete scrapping of all the test aircraft that had been built and all of the production tooling. The CF-105 was a beast of an aircraft; would have been better than any interceptor the USAF had at the time, F-100, F-101, F-102, F-104, and the F-106. I don't know how the CF-105 and the F-4 Phantom II would have matched-up as interceptors.

Posted by: From about That Time at January 15, 2025 11:01 PM (U+vhE)

162 I also did some work at Whiteman AFB. That's the home of the B2. B2 is in photos and paintings and models all over the base. In almost every case we have the planar view from above as seen in the photo here - the familiar bat wing shape.

I was near the flight line and I heard jets. I spent a few months living in the flight line at Eglin AFB so I recognize a lot of jets by their sound. This was a different sound. So I looked to see what was taking off. Well, the day was overcast and a bit of mist. And I looked at where the sound was coming from and did not see a plane. It was weird. And then i focused in on it and picked it up - the B2 was taking off away from me, and the "black" didn't look black it looked gray and hard to make out against the sky. And there weren't the key is features of a plane - no tail, wings, fuselage. From edge on, it was very flat and linear with a bulge in the middle. If anything it looked like a flying saucer!

So yes that thing is "low observable" It is hard to see, and it doesn't make you think airplane. And the sound is...different. It's quieter than other planes by a LOT. It has to be a source for many UFO sightings

168 That was *not* a B-36 they'd hauled away from Kelly AFB, in San Antonio, TX.

Rather, the sole extant, experimental cargo variant of the '36 planform.

The XC-99. Used the '36's wings, engine, rudder n' tail.

But with an enormous, double-decked cargo fuselage, instead of the bomber design.

Was a landmark along the road that linked the (then) separate Kelly AFB and Lackland AFB establishments.

Friend worked in Trans and had access to the military flight list and saw a KC-135, maybe KC-10(?), to Germany for a Space A flight. He was the only one that showed up and the crew questioned why he picked this flight, no particular reason, he wanted to go to Germany. They let him fly along and they refueled the SR-71. One does not so admonish a female, experienced, competitive shooter, so.

"Calmness" leads to higher accuracy, shorter times, and higher scores. Higher scores lead to trophies, cash, fame and fortunes.

Now, maybe "Calm your tits" might get CBD to shoot like Hunter Biden coming down off of a bender of gorgring on French Toast with Maple Syrup while shooting a Hi-Point 9mm.... but I doubt it.

But whisper "wobbly goblin" into Weasel's ear, and watch those scores scatter from hell to breakfast!

I got a good laugh out of that episode. Katie Porter looks like Phyllis on The Office. She would have gotten the Body Positivity vote and possibly beaten Schiff if she'd made it to the Top Two.

Garvey is a chooch all right. Many years ago he said he was interested in politics and had been approached by both parties. Wasn't sure which one he'd go with, but he had made it known that he would settle for nothing less than state governor or US Senator. The only real thing to decide was whether he'd be a Democrat or a Republican.

I was watching one of those space shows, "NASA Unexplained" or something that was one early this morning. They try to make things mysterious and exciting, and it's sort of silly sometimes.

Anyway, they did one about tears on spacesuit gloves. The hand rails on the exterior of the ISS get pelted with little micrometeoroids, and there may have been some other effect. It can produce some sharp, snaggy defects that can tear the material.

And then they had a bit about a spacesuit that started leaking water coolant inside. The guy was out and his helmet starting filling with water. They had that problem again recently.

329 Too many Skunk and SR-71, F-117, ATF, Dark Spot, JSF/X-35 stories to tell.

Plus, all you gang go to bed, before I get my night owl opportunity to contribute.

I was a Skunk engineer, aero, started in 1980 on F-117. Probably giving myself away, as Nurse Ratched told him, opsec, Jimmy.

I will let the horde know when I get my X-35 book published. I was very much in the thick of all of that. I'm at draft, with the final 2 chapters about to start.

334 Fell asleep early, just woke up at 2340 PST to find I missed the ONT. Enjoying the Blackbird-centric focus. Lived at George AFB in the mid 80s, a small TAC base since closed under Clinton, and about all we saw on the flightline was F4G wild weasels from the Vietnam era.

335 I may be mistaken but to me Trump's ultimatum was 'Release ALL the hostages BEFORE Jan 20 or else it's bye bye!'

ALL, BEFORE, BYE BYE

Anything else is wasted breath and walking it back - not the gesture of a strong man.

Am I wrong?

George was out in the California desert. Folks who drove in from the east could see that it was only 10 miles from the thriving city of Victorville. Folks driving in from the north would only see desert and the adjacent ramshackle village of Adelanto. It was not unusual for dependant wives who had taken the northern route to burst into tears when they arrived at the base.

337 Got to see the Blackbird aruve for 2 airshow in early 80s. Awesomeness for real. Beautiful & powerful.

338 "the adjacent ramshackle village of Adelanto"
AKA Afterburn City since the planes took off in that direction

See Daily Mail. There's a poll out about Newscum and Karen Bass. 48% hold both of them "greatly or somewhat" responsible for the fires. Newscum gets more "greatly responsible" than Bass.

340 Trump should’ve let Joe take credit for the disaster of the Israel-Hamas deal. That agreement will NEVER come to fruition. Six weeks? It won’t last six days. Trump’s first day in office should begin by killing the top terrorist- PERIOD! There will be NO peace without consequences.

Here in Israel, many of us are very despondent. I cannot speak for the majority because when you look how majorities often vote, that, too, makes one despondent.

A bit. Some things he said about consequence are vague in whom he was addressing.

Simply explain to me why Trump didn't tell Netanyahu to just say no to the current DC Regime and wait another week.

I can only hope that there's some 4D chess plays being made here with Netanyahu and Trump in cahoots with each other but there's zero proof to that.

Apologies for disjointed post.

347 I flew Navy C-12's from Rota, Spain in the late 80's and on a flight to RAF Mildenhall I was privileged to see a Blackbird land there. BTW, three years flying from southern Spain was the best duty ever!
