Zuckerberg Announces "Drastic Reduction" in "Censorship;" Says "Fact-Checkers" are "Too Politically Biased," Says US Government "Has Pushed For Censorship"

METAENDScensorship.jpg

Total vindication.

You're going to see so much vindication you'll get tired of all the vindication.

Meta is ending its fact-checking program and lifting restrictions on speech to "restore free expression" across Facebook, Instagram and Meta platforms, admitting its current content moderation practices have "gone too far."

"We're going to get back to our roots and focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies and restoring free expression on our platforms," Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a video posted Tuesday morning. "More specifically, we're going to get rid of fact-checkers and replace them with Community Notes similar to X, starting in the U.S."

In his announcement, posted below the fold, he called out these "fact-checkers" as "too politically biased."

Bear in mind these fake "third-party" "fact-checkers" were demanded into existence by the left and the US government under Biden. They needed some supposedly non-governmental third-party censors, and the "fact-checkers" were willed into being through leftwing NGO funding and, yes, government funding.

They never existed to check "facts." They existed to provide a figleaf of plausible deniability for government-mandated censors to suppress any information the leftwing government didn't want people to know or speak about.

Meta's chief global affairs officer, Joel Kaplan, joined Fox News Channel's "Fox & Friends" Tuesday morning for an exclusive interview to discuss the changes.

"This is a great opportunity for us to reset the balance in favor of free expression. As Mark says in that video, what we're doing is we're getting back to our roots and free expression," Kaplan told "Fox & Friends."

By the way, don't think that I think Zuckerberg is a hero. I don't. He's a villain.

But in walking away from his villainy, he's conceding that the villains have been defeated.

The left is a defeated army and the deserters are streaming out of it and putting on the uniforms of the winning side.

Meta's third-party fact-checking program was put in place after the 2016 election and had been used to "manage content" and misinformation on its platforms, largely due to "political pressure," executives said, but admitted the system has "gone too far."

"We went to independent, third-party fact-checkers," Kaplan told Fox News Digital in an interview. "It has become clear there is too much political bias in what they choose to fact-check because, basically, they get to fact-check whatever they see on the platform."

Kaplan told Fox News Digital that Meta is "ending that completely" and will replace it with a "Community Notes" model similar to the one used on X, formerly Twitter.

"Instead of going to some so-called expert, it instead relies on the community and the people on the platform to provide their own commentary to something that they've read," Kaplan explained, noting that if a note gets support from "the broadest cross-section of users," that note can be attached to the content for others to see.
placeholder

"We think that's a much better approach rather than relying on so-called experts who bring their own biases into the program," Kaplan said.

More vindication: Zuckerberg and Kaplan both admit that they've been censoring the actual debate over transgenderism to favor the transgender cultists.

Kaplan also told Fox News Digital that Meta is changing some of its own content moderation rules, especially those that they feel are "too restrictive and not allowing enough discourse around sensitive topics like immigration, trans issues and gender."

"We want to make sure that discourse can happen freely on the platform without fear of censorship," Kaplan told Fox News Digital. "We have the power to change the rules and make them more supportive of free expression. And we're not just changing the rules, we are actually changing how we enforce the rules."

....

Last year, Zuckerberg sent a letter to the House Judiciary Committee in which he admitted that he felt pressure from the Biden administration, particularly with regard to COVID content, and even items like satire and humor.

"The thing is, as American companies, when other governments around the world that don't have our tradition or our First Amendment, when they see the United States government pressuring U.S. companies to take down content, it is just open season then for those governments to put more pressure [on their companies]," Kaplan explained. "We do think it is a real opportunity to work with the Trump administration and to work on free expression at home."

The WSJ's write up includes this admission that the Army of Censorship lost the war:

"We've reached a point where it's just too many mistakes and too much censorship," he said.

"The recent elections also feel like a cultural tipping point towards once again prioritizing speech."

Zuckerberg directly referenced Trump several times in the video, criticizing the legacy media for their coverage of his first term in office. He also said that fact-checkers had become "too politically biased."

For his part, Trump is willing to forgive Zuckerberg and welcome him into MAGA.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Trump said he thinks Meta's "presentation was excellent."

"They have come a long way," Trump said.

Your own reaction to one of history's greatest censors experiencing a deathbed epiphany may vary.

One thing I would say, though: He could have just quietly walked back his censorship regime. He didn't have to admit that he made a mistake -- the media companies sure don't.

And even though he minimized his own role in censorship, throwing blame at the Biden Administration and "legacy media" for demanding censorship, 1, it's totally true that Biden and Brian Stelter both demanded censorship daily and 2, it's a good thing that he's calling those bad actors out as the main drivers of censorship.

This isn't a quiet walking away from censorship; this is a loud public denunciation of it.

That is big.

I mean, he's announcing that the transgender cult has forced everyone to sing from their hymnbook. He didn't have to say that. He chose to.

This is a huge moment. I'm willing to give Zuckerberg some credit. Not a lot, but definitely some.

He didn't just desert the losing army, he came over with a chest full of secret documents from the losing army's high command.

He might also sense that the cultural shift is more profound that even we suspect. And he'd be in a position to know that, given that his company collects everyone's data and clicking habits every single day.

I don't think it speaks to the toadies pressured into it.

He was still using his personal property as he saw fit. It was DC that was acting without legitimacy.

But there could be a statute or two about colluding with the government's suppression of rights.

34 I mentioned near the end of the other thread that I was going to say something else about Ike.

I don't have the exact date to hand, but I believe it was in the mid 1950s that the comic strip Pogo had the character Howland Owl run for "congersman." A reporter from "Newslife" was sent to interview him and for a week or so, the strip had Owl answering questions in a parody of Ike-speak, with all of the obfuscations, repetitions and caveats. Finally, worn out by it all, the reporter asked Pogo, "Does he think the way he talks?" to which Pogo replied, "It's a concept that got me worried, too."

All of this, of course, was because artist Walt Kelly (like the execrable Herblock) was a good northeastern liberal who agreed with the Georgetown set that Ike was a doofus, a tangle-tongued dodderer who had no business in the White House.

"President Joe Biden on Tuesday is set to designate two new monuments and, in doing so, establish the largest tract of protected land in the continental United States by expanding a corridor out West, the White House said.
The proclamations Biden plans to sign would create the Chuckwalla and Sáttítla Highlands National Monuments, with the first in southern California and the latter in the northern mountainous part of the state. The two new monuments total nearly 850,000 acres, according to the administration."

Because Trump holds the receipts of the Dem and Deep State directed censorship programs. Zuck wants to keep owning Fakebook.

What is to watch for though is the new AI profiles being allowed on Fakebook which simply formalizes chat bot technology applied to influence people.

I also think as a business decision, Fakebook is getting out in front of what could cause them market loss. Fakebook has already probably got as much world wide coverage as it could get and it is now running the Red Queen's race to simply stay relevant to existing audiences. The yutes, for example, are already on TikTok etc. and not really interested in Fakebook anymore.

48 This is all net-positive of course but the fundamental issues remain. These platforms are either publishers, or just platforms. As private entities, anything they do on their own is up to them and fine (constrained only by existing laws and contractual obligations to users/customers).

The guvamint interference in free speech is the problem, and should be dealt with directly (and very harshly), against guvamint entities and personnel. I think the MO case is that sort of action.

The oligopolistic/monopolistic first-mover dominance of a few platforms is the real problem (of course made much more problematic by a populace not generally given to critical thinking, and poorly educated and unworldly).

We already have the legal framework to deal with it. Utilities are publicly regulated such as light, power, water, and telecom by local, state, and federal governments. Internet social media on global scales need to be treated as public utilities nowadays by regulators and that is beginning to be so.

The alternative is vigorous trust busting and banning new acquisitions of existing companies and forcing existing companies to stagnate so that others can leap frog them via technological advances.

144 These "tech" people (Faceplant is like all social media an advertising company, only trivially a "tech company) are often extremely narrow in their competence, and of course depending on age products of an era/education in which core American values like freedom of expression were not imbued as before. Even those like Gates, who actually took some amount of time and work to amass their wealth and power (unlike the instant tycoons like Zuck) are often clueless outside their narrow specialty. Will never forget picking up what I think was Gates' first book (back in the 90s) at a bookstore, and browsing through it ("The Way Ahead", maybe?). Yikes. 151 To loosely paraphrase Thomas Sowell, to an extent it doesn't really matter why Zuckerberg is doing this as long as he's doing it. However, a. I don't trust that he won't reverse course again if he can get away with it, b. I don't trust that Meta's community notes will be evenly promoted between Left and Normal, and c. I don't trust that this is a cover for doing effectively the same stuff as before but under some new cover.

It would be nice if he actually had a veil lifted wrt free speech and open dialog, but realistically I just hope that Zuckerberg/Meta are simply cold businessmen rather than Leftists.

Alito, I think, is the justice that seems to be the pick to retire first. Thomas, as ranking senior justice, gets to pick opinion writers if Roberts is not in the majority so he has a bit more power.

It also depends on Alito or Thomas having health issues but justices can be quite stubborn about retirement (see Ginsberg). I think Thomas has been waiting for a long time to set his mark on law and depart from the shadow of Scalia ( I actually think Thomas is the more sound constitutionally than Scalia who was flashier in their output.) Scalia authored some really bad opinions in narrowly decided cases while I can't recall Thomas doing the same.

The electorate saw through the BS and sent PDT back to the White House with Vance as the heir apparent. The Deep State lost, in a huge way and it will make them desperate. 304 I just got ROLLED by "Sharper Image." NEVER buy anything from these thieves.

Bought a chainsaw. Was delivered to my Old address (apartment complex). They gave it back to Fedex. Fedex guy, an American, verified this and said it's on its way back to Sharper Image, and is currently at a Fedex depot in Ohio.

Called Sharper Image four different times, fought through the world's worst phone tree, only to get to customer "service" drone bank, whose denizens informed me, with that trademark subcontinental lilt, that I could "Orderanotherchainsawandwewon'tchargeyou shipping..."

That is unacceptable, I told them. The drones then chirped from their script that it was Paypal's address (no, that's current); that it was my card's address (no, THAT's current). Obviously it's an old address in the Sharper Image system.

Can you update my address? "No, I'm So Sorry, But We Cannot Do That" (their go-to script line).

After an hour and a half of this shite, I filed a dispute with Paypal. Probably another fake thing and I doubt I'll get a refund. I HATE SHARPER IMAGE.

“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring. That covers a lot of territory, the Gulf of America — what a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate,” Trump said as he addressed reporters at Mar-a-Lago.

309 My feeling is that like Aaron Swartz and Jack Dorsey, Zuckerman probably isn't hard-wired to censor people. I strongly suspect that he and other tech / media titans have been victim to what China calls the capture of the elites. They've either been bribed, blackmailed, or coerced into doing the government's bidding, (which in turn has been bribed and blackmailed into doing the bidding of China & the Globalists.)

He probably resents this, and isn't as fearful of the regime under Donald Trump. But who knows.

314 Only thing that changed - people's expectation of whether Trump could / should win. And part of that is the freedom of information that eventually won the day, in large part due to Musk freeing Twitter from the clutches of the censors.

Most people are weak minded. The effort of the censors was not to keep information hidden but to create the appearance of consensus around their favored position. Most people will tend to gravitate toward what "everyone" knows.

Hess probably crashed because his BF-110 rattled him around like a pea in a can when he was evading the RAF.
The story I was told was that Marshall Goering tried out the BF-110 since he was a crack pilot, and got stuck in the add-on pillow supports and had to be dragged out since he had gotten so fat from his opiate and sugar addiction; Goering declared that the additional padding would be not added for reasons, and a lot of the pilots got shaken up for that reason even when belted in.

Correct. I think a lot of people are laboring under the misapprehension that Trump's reelection means things have changed. To an extent, they have - public opinion has shifted considerably.

But nothing else has, and public opinion + $10 will get you a cup of coffee in this country.

Trump faces all the same challenges as 2016 and Big Tech will be one of the bigger ones again, this PR stunt notwithstanding.

=======
Rick223, I don't think that the NFA or the GCA of 1968 are going to be overturned entirely. Even under the 1st amendment, there are time, place, and manner restrictions that government is allowed to do. Like repeal of the 17th amendment, I think are dead ends for activists.

Darrell, I think Sullivan is more likely to be revisited and a later Scotus case requiring clear and convincing evidence for malice may be undone. Normal standard in civil cases is preponderance of the evidence as it was in Sullivan and returning to that will induce a more cautious media for better or worse.

A lot of those companies will go under or cost a lot more if divested. From what I remember from a few years ago of Google's finances, AdSense is the big moneymaker and Google buys or builds a company like Android in order to get the customer info to sell via AdSense. Youtube, in particular, runs at a loss and I would guess some of the other products you name are the same, they are designed to harvest your information to sell is how Google makes money off it.

Same as Amazon makes relatively little on their stores but a lot via its cloud computing and web services wing.
