Evening and morning to all the insomaniacals, early risers, and late toilers! 'Tis Tiu's Day, one more step down the long twisty road to the weekend.
Odd dreams last night . . . I dreamed that, living in this apartment, I woke up at ten past seven one morning -- so late that it makes more sense for me to call in sick to work than to try to get there. As part of that dream, or maybe a later one, I went for a run and saw I'd clocked up 32 minutes on the workout. Then a '58 Chevy convertible emerged from a driveway and went past me. Car was in horrible shape, scabbed paint and rust everywhere. I called to the driver, "My father had one of those Impalas!" but he didn't hear me, or ignored me. I got back home, to a different house, and found bugs crawling on the screen door. So I slipped in -- one bug got in, and the cats went after it -- and took some bug spray out to douse the door. Around that time the alarm went off. Oh, well. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 07, 2025 04:13 AM (omVj0) 8

It's actually cold (for here) now, about 35 F. I parked near the trees outside my apartment, which usually keeps frost from forming on my car windows. Though I have an ice scraper in the trunk; no worries.

I survived the car insurance settlement gauntlet and came out 100% whole today. I consider this a miracle. Background: two New Mexican nitwits inexplicably had a bumper car grudge match where I was sitting at a stop sign. The outcome was they totaled my 3 month old new car with 4750 miles on it. Degree of annoyance is the took place two days before Christmas. That complicated the matter a bit but I was proactive in moving everything along. It seems to have worked. I haven't seen the police report yet but I'm thinking the cops made it clear I was just sitting there and had zero fault. Tomorrow will be police report acquirement day which I assume will contain much hilarity. Somehow in the middle of all this chaos I was able to buy a a replacement car the Sunday before the New Year holiday. I am so relieved to have this behind me.

You scamps to the north have screwed up the weather here in Las Cruces. It got down to the mid-20s last night with a high in the mid-40s. Even worse it may snow on Wednesday. "Frame Generation" and that DLSS crap reminds me of when those little fake "4K" cameras came out. It was "4K" with something called "Interpolation," which is French for bullshit gimmick. Interpolation is, like, a 1080p image double or quadrupled, thus rendering "4K." I dunno. Point is, frame generation is duplicating frames. So if the original frame is crap, congratulations Nvidia, you are double crappy frames. Posted by: Soothsayer at January 07, 2025 04:31 AM (nX34c) 25

Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant Here we go. I was stopped at a side street waiting to take a right turn onto a three-line arterial. Directly across from me was nitwit one waiting in a left turn pocket waiting to take a left turn across those same three lanes. Inexplicably nitwit one pulled in front of three lanes of on coming traffic, blocked two ,of them and stopped. Nitwit two 2 was in the center lane of the arterial and rather than stopping tried to slalom around around nitwit one at over 40 mph. None of this worked. The two smacked into each other resulting with nitwit two careening off and slamming into the driver side front wheel area of my car. This resulted in all the airbags going off for extra fun. As I've come to find out those airbags cost about $20,000 to replace. I'm guessing the damage to the rest of the car would Have cost around $10,000 to repair. From the insurance company's perspective it was pretty easy called a total this one. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram at January 07, 2025 04:42 AM (Q8Bj8) 34
The insurance settlement information included an extremely detailed analysis of the condition of my car. They even checked if the engine was clean. The only thing they could remotely find wrong with it was it had "minor scratches" on the windshield. I was like what? I think they were complaining about the bugs I hadn't cleaned off the windshield because there was no scratches on it whatsoever.
The slippery part in the settlement documents is they got two "comparable" RAV4s for value comparison. The other two had about 10,000 mi on them and they never told me what trim level they were using for the comps. This is where much fuckery can take place. Fortunately that didn't happen in this instance. If nothing else, it's been very instructive to see how this whole process works. I am much smarter about how to deal with an accident with the police involving multiple cars, multiple adjustment agents and such. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram at January 07, 2025 04:50 AM (Q8Bj8) 35

Automation can be a wonderful thing but... In the fullness of time, senior management will shift responsibility for all the various aspects of supporting the system to... let's say lower labor cost countries. The people in those countries are wonderful and, no doubt, senior management will only hire the top 0.1% of the top 1%. People who'd be snapped up with H1B visas but who prefer the fresh air and unclutter vistas of their native countries. The problem is that these people won't really understand all the nuance of the systems they're supporting. They'll make changes which are incompatible with the system and not provide any means to undo what they've done. Not because they're stupid, but because they don't really care. And then the modern world stops. Not with terminators roaming the streets but with mountains of immobile machinery that no one really understands anymore. I, Pencil. Sunday car sales was an issue in the Ohio senatorial election.
The custom was that car lots were closed on Sunday because so many car salesmen were part-time preachers. When dealerships wanted to open on Sundays, sales forces attempted to unionize, and if opposed the unions yelled oppression. Bernie Moreno was a car dealership owner, and most of the campaign ads opposing him went on and on about his "refusal to pay overtime" to his sales staff. but what about all those countries that refuse to take in their own people?
Lets unpack that statement. So a foreign state can exile their own citizens and fully expect another country to pick up the entire expense. That would also be the equivalent of traveling on a cruise and your home country won't let you back in when the trip is over. Or any country can (and apparently is doing) dump off the criminals, insane, crippled and diseased on to your nearest Western Nation and that is somehow not an act of war or a human rights violation.
