Vance have been officially certified as the winners of the 2024 election for president and vice-president. Hooray! What's say you grab a beverage (or 2) and maybe a snack (or 2) and step on into tonight's ONT? As you can see from the photo above, the water's fine!
Something Important Happened Today
The Twelve Days of Christmas Are Over Have you figured out what to do with all 364 gifts you received from your true love? Yes, that's the aggregate number of gifts received over all of the days in the classic "Twelve Days of Christmas" song. (Since we've been repeatedly told there will be no math, there is no c-ONT-stitutional requirement to show one's work) Today is the Feast of the Epiphany on the Christian calendar. It commemorates the visit of the Magi (in Eastern Christianity, it also commemorates additional events). Tradition holds that there were 3 magi. However, the only Biblical account of the visit, in the book of Matthew, does not specify a number. There were three gifts mentioned - gold, frankincense, and myrrh. This is the likely reason why there were thought to be 3 magi - or "Wise Men". Here's a different take on the Twelve Days. Strange Geography - Exclaves A previous ONT featured a segment about an exclave (a portion of territory of one state completely surrounded by territory of another or others, as viewed by the home territory) known as the Kentucky Bend - an section of Kentucky which is only reachable by boat or by traveling through a portion of Tennessee. (commenting on old threads is dangerous and may earn you a permanent strike from the banhammer) Tonight, we have 2 more examples of exclaves in the United States. Both of these locations are only reachable by watercraft or by traveling through portions of Canada. Up first - Northwest Angle in Minnesota. The Northwest Angle aka “the Angle” is located on the northern side of Lake of the Woods, or when viewing a map, the “chimney”. The area is 596.3 miles, 473.2 miles of that is water. It is also the northern most point of the contiguous 48 states. The Angle is in coexistence with Angle Township and Lake of the Woods County, surrounded by Manitoba and Ontario. The reefs create a fun and unique fishing experience for all! Another US exclave is Point Roberts, Washington. Point Roberts, WA is an unincorporated community located just South of the Vancouver, BC metro area. It can only be accessed by crossing by vehicle through Canada, flying in on a small plane or coming in by private boat. It is not physically connected to the continental United States, but it is part of Whatcom County [Washington]. Bonus exclave - The Lost Peninsula of Michigan. The Lost Peninsula is a small exclave of the U.S. state of Michigan. It is part of Monroe County in the southeasternmost corner of the state. The Lost Peninsula was created as a result of the Toledo War boundary dispute in 1835 and 1836 to determine whether the State of Ohio or the Michigan Territory would control an area known as the Toledo Strip. After the Toledo War, the state border was established at approximately the 41,44 north latitude line just north of the mouth of the Maumee River. This gave the river and the city of Toledo to the state of Ohio. However, the state line continued across the smaller Ottawa River and divided the peninsula on the far side of the river. The land north of the state line on the far side of the river remained in Michigan, but it no longer had any land connection to the remainder of the state. The area became known as the “Lost Peninsula". Phrase Origins On this morning's art thread, our moron friend Bulg (Or Glub, as I call him) mentioned the phrase "by and large" and wondered about it's origin. Well - here ya go! By and large means “in general” or "on the whole" in most contexts, but in sailors’ lingo of yore, whence the phrase arose, by and large described a vessel alternately sailing as directly into the wind as possible (typically within about 45 degrees of the wind) - that is, by - and away from the direction from which the wind is blowing, with the wind hitting the vessel’s widest point - that is, large. A phrase that has multiple possible origins is "the whole nine yards". Some say it refers to the length of an ammunition belt used by airmen during WWI and/or WWII. Others say it has to do with the amount of fabric required to make a men's suit or kilt. Lots of conflicting information on the interwebz. If you're interested, start with the Wikipedia entry, then go from there. Here are 7 more phrase origins to check out. Another enclave for you is Carter Lake Iowa. As Google helpfully summarizes:
Carter Lake is an Iowa enclave located in Nebraska, situated across the Missouri River. The town was originally on the Iowa side of the river but due to a significant flood in 1877, the Missouri River shifted its course, moving Carter Lake to the Nebraska side. Despite this geographical change, Carter Lake remains part of Iowa, and residents must cross into Nebraska to access the town, making it a unique example of a pene-enclave. Posted by: Cicero (@cicero43) at January 06, 2025 10:01 PM (dDmld) It's a kind of ointment. One of it's uses was in embalming. See: the spices the women brought to the tomb on Easter morning, intending to formally prepare Jesus for burial, since they were short of time on Good Friday, b/c of the start of the Sabbath. The three gifts have a symbolic meaning- incense for Godhead, gold for King, and myrhh for sacrifice. Posted by: sal at January 06, 2025 10:14 PM (f+FmA) 62

So, last week, my elderly mother in her late 80's, has severe liver issues and stomach bloating. My brother took her to the ER on Boxing Day and I took a break after caring for her continuously for years. My brother and his wife were handling everything.
They were draining her stomach daily but she was doing well, eating well and they thought she might have a uear left in her. I said I could learn how to do the drainage but no. Need a professional. Friday, Mom was being set up for assisted living. She'd have a small apartment and medical issues would be taken care of. Saturday, my brother's family came here and we packed up everything Mom would need for assisted living. I hadn't seen her since she went to the hospital. Stateless needed a break. But I'd call 3 times a day and Mom would call me. Saturday, she was really tired but I know she doesn't sleep much and has days like that. Sunday, I called in the afternoon. The nurse gave her the phone but she was out of it. Breaktime over. I ran to the hospital, fed her, she ate and drank everything but didn't remember my name. She was at 40%. That alleged British threat is not credible. Possibly too bad, in a way. But there are no NATO members, even the UK, remotely ready or willing to rely on themselves for security. But just remembered, if we're talking exclaves, I did spend some time in Nagorno-Karabakh, when it was pretty quiet and under Armenian control. This morning, I was up and ready to start the week. I'd go and help her with each meal, get her stronger and ready for assisted living.
I get there before 9am and breakfast is still out. I don gloves and gown going into the room. Mom can't even sip. I put yogurt on a spoon, put it in her mouth, nothing. Much less coherent too. 15% of normal. Her nurse said she got worse through the night. The doctor comes in. Her first time seeing Mom. I told her this tale. Friday....assisted living and she was supposed to have a test today to make sure she was fine. But, wow, steep decline in literally dozens of hours. We agreed no heroic measures. Just keep her comfortable. She had internal bleeding which she's had before. No more testing or anything. She mentioned hospice and I bluntly told her I didn't think Mom would last the week. Mentally, I'd be surprised if she was here Wednesday. I came home around noon. Our beautiful neighbour, the wife, was going to the hospital with letters from the kids. Raced back, met her in the room. She brought me food! Also there was the daughter of one of my mother's best friends. Mom was still a little responsive. They moved Mom up to palliative care. Jabrwok (SWM, 55) Lionel Manboobs 14 minutes ago Why is "hate" spelled "h*te"? Does the TwiX think people won't know what he's saying? Or is X particularly censorious of the word? DJ9r Jabrwok (SWM, 55) 9 minutes ago No, but many other sites WILL block/censor posts with certain content, even if it is a link to a TwitterX post. It's to make sure it has the widest reach without being censored. ==== So that's why. I didn't think X had an algorithm censoring words; or that e.g. leftists were bot-searching or the like to remove tweets using 'dangerous' language so conservatives were self-censoring to avoid complaints. ______________________________ I suspect China is probably rattling the cage up there too. Obviously, they wouldn't be direct about it due to the US military interests. But, over the last half decade, China has been securing fishing rights in the weirdest places to accommodate for over fishing off their mainland. The last one they signed was off the coast of Yemen, as well as Somali (where a Chinese fishing trawler was promptly acquired by the local pirate gentry). That is, of course, when they bother to secure rights and don't just help themselves (which they do a lot). Posted by: Ghost of Jeffrey Epstein at January 06, 2025 10:38 PM (dIske) 164

Franpsycho Sykes/Picot didn't eff up any real borders that existed anyway - unless they were ottoman vilayets or whatever, but those are also externally imposed borders. Syria's borders actually make a little sense, at least in the east and west. Greater Syrian nationalists (well, something-ists, not sure nationalism is the word) of course wanted the whole coast (Lebanon), and proto-Paleostinians wanted to the southern part of Greater Syria.

West Berlin had a bunch of exclaves, but only one with people living there (Steinstücken).
Unsurprisingly, people would use it to escape. Eventually, a couple dozen East German border guards used it to break out. Very embarrassing for the Communist buttlickers, so they built a "mini Wall" around it. Lucius Clay wasn't one to let the little bastards have an affront go unanswered, so he established a small military installation there as a big Yankee middle finger to East Shitkannisburg. Transportation in and out was done by helicopter til the 70s, when we built a corridor into the rest of free Berlin. Just a little Cold War oddity. I talked to several women who met Mom Friday working to set her up for assisted living. They were shocked to see her after how great she was Friday.
Over and over. I called people when I came home and told them to start spreading the word. I called the receptionist at Mom's heart doctor who loves Mom. They'd go out to lunch occassionally. She came by around 5 and stayed a while and helped me. My brother showed up. Told me to get the dog Ralphy which he had paperwork for. Back home again. Bring Ralphy to the hospital past 7pm. Dude gets a lot of likes. We went into the room and my brother says Mom's unresponsive. Like completely. Sponge in the mouth...no reaction. I brought the dog home. I'm going to have 6 regular size beers, the food my friend brought and go to bed. I told my brother to text me. I'm drinking so the phone is downstairs. We did this with my father too. Like Mom and I, Dad and I had no unexpressed thoughts. I took care of him too and he was happy about that. He had a stroke at age 90 when I was taking him to the vegetable market. I saw it happen in front of my eyes. Posted by: Stateless at January 06, 2025 10:42 PM (jvJvP) 172

While the people that complain that the European colonists set up borders that weren't perfect and this causes conflict to this day aren't wrong...the borders weren't perfect before that either and generally can't be some perfect match for every bit of history, culture, and religion that each cultural group has.
The people that live in those regions need to put on their big boys pants and hash it out...ideally diplomatically, but if you don't the border that some French guy gave you 100 years ago you can always take up arms and see if Allah really does agree with you. 18-1 actually "jihadi country" would mean Egypt and Saudi Arabia in terms of where the modern version originated, and they either suppressed it or exported/got rid of it.
Chechnya's a whole different planet. Completely apart from Islam, the toughest/craziest bunch in their region by a large margin. Russian Empire fought its toughest fights there, it was their "wild south". And Chechens were by far the most able and dangerous jihadis in recent times. Always a bad sign if they were in the mix, and always instantly the focus of our operations. Posted by: rhomboid at January 06, 2025 10:49 PM (1m82a) 183
We've become conditioned to look at the world from the orientation of the equator. We see the relationship of continents from east to west or west to east from that perspective. But that's not home ships can travel or planes and other less friendly projectiles can travel.
Look at the map at the beginning of this article to give a different perspective. The Arctic region is rich in resources but it is also militarily and commercially strategic. Every major power in the world has been building up resources in the region for years trying to achieve dominance. Greenland is uniquely positioned and would give the US and immensely strategic location in the region. https://tinyurl.com/mr26ybkj Posted by: JackStraw at January 06, 2025 10:50 PM (LkLld) 184

I'm using the term in the sense of "controlled by a jihadi politically establishment" so Afghanistan, Iran, now Syria, etc. Modern jihad comes from Qutb and was funded by the Saudis, yes, but they haven't controlled Egypt in hundreds of years and Saudi is a weird mixed bag. I haven't been paying close attention to this one Posted by: Don Black at January 06, 2025 10:49 PM (/7KEl) Greenland is a (mostly) self-governing possession of Denmark, from whence came the Vikings who originally settled it. Its total population is 50 to 60 thousand, IIRC, and sustaining it costs Denmark much money. How to take over? "Buy" it from Denmark for a few billion dollars; its resources are literally priceless, since not all are even discovered. Denmark is off the hook for sustaining it. As part of the deal, all Greenlanders get to retain Danish citizenship, and also get a U.S. green card. Ten years hence, they have to make a choice: swear the oath of allegiance, and become a U.S. citizen, use their Danish citizenship to resettle in Denmark, or simply remain in Greenland, and live out their days as a lawfully-resident alien. Yep. You go to war to inflict enough pain on your enemies to get them to accept your terms. Rebuilding their country and paying them if you kill their fighters in combat accomplishes the opposite of that. Give any American general from 1945 or before the American military of 2001 and 'Stan is pacified in 6 months...with a lot less population in the Taliban friendly areas. An American citizen residing in the UK, this would seem to be a genuine risk. I seriously doubt they could, or would, be able to extend their reach further. What’s the truth of the matter? On the river there is an "Omega" where the land inside the O belongs to Mexico, but it is completely surrounded by Guatemala. The Maya built the city of Yaxchilan inside the Omega. She said that's how it started, they just started hanging out with these adult men. I can just about see my Daddy allowing my 13 year old self wander off to have lunch at the apartment of a bunch of grown-ass men. Where the hell were these girls' parents when they were being passed around to 100s of men?! That took a lot of time! I don't want to sound like I'm excusing the rapists, but why were the parents not wondering where their daughters were?! My parents knew where I was 24/7 when I was that age. Of I went to a friend's home, my mom or dad or aunt or brother or whoever took me there and spoke to the parent when they dropped me off. I wonder if a lot of these men had money and the pare is looked the other way...not knowing they are being raped, but hoping for a rich son in law? Tammy-al-Thor,
Most of these girls were from working class families. From what I have read, many were in "care homes"--(is this comparable to our foster system?) I don't think most had Dads that cared what they were up to, and they were happy to get attention from the guys at the takeaway/kabob shops. I watched a documentary with an interview with a young girl. They got free food, drinks, and cigarettes. It was nice for them, at first. They got positive attention. Then they got gang-raped, and passed around. One girl was raped 1,000 times. There were a few Dads who cared and tried to help their daughters. They got arrested for their troubles.... I was five when I was first abused. And like 96.5% of sex abuse cases, CPS refused to take my abusers to court. Then, I went on national TV with Mark Steyn to discuss child sexual exploitation in my hometown and the fact that little girls are still being raped and exploited on council estates in Telford today. The police came banging on my door the next day after searching every address I’d ever lived at. They tried to demand that I go to the police station for an “interview” and tried to intimidate me into silence because: “When you go on national TV to discuss grooming gangs, you should expect us to come to you.” This isn’t a thing of the past. If you at the map, you can see the ferry terminal at the end of a long man-made causeway extending SW into deep water, and nearby to the north, another man-made causeway extending SW into deep water. That is the Roberts Bank Superport, a terminal meant for loading B.C and Alberta metallurgical coal onto ships bound for Japan and China. I think some U.S. coal gets loaded there, too. I understand what y'all are getting at with the single motherhood thing, but I still feel like a lot of these mothers still lacked some sort of moral compass.
I know plenty of single mothers, and none of them would have gone years not knowing where their kids were after school, weekends, etc. I'd be willing to bet at least some of them were perfectly fine with their teenage daughters rich older "boyfriend". Again, not saying they knew the full extent of the horror, but this went on for some of these girls for years. And my understanding is that a lot of people knew it. Not just the cops, but neighborhood people. So the parents ought to have been paying extra attention to their daughters whereabouts, and who they were running around with. New Coke was mostly the way to get people to accept replacing real sugar with cheaper sucrose. Ever had a Mexican Coke? It tastes like Coke used to because real sugar. At the time when they released Classic Coke it tasted better than New Coke but I knew it wasn't the same. Did not know why til much later. Money money money

The Toledo War is hilarious history-- Michigan and Ohio got into a snit over ownership of Toledo-- They were electing/appointing competing slates of officials for the city, then sending their sheriffs to arrest the officials of the other side, and things escalated to calling out the state militias, who stood on opposite sides of the Maumee river and spent a sunny fall afternoon hurling insults at each other. (This fine tradition continues with the U of M / OSU rivalry) The politicians in D.C. realized that Ohio had more residents and therefore more grateful voters when it would soon become a state, so they stepped in and "settled" the dispute in favor of Ohio, and gave the Michigan Territory the Upper Peninsula as a consolation prize after Andrew Jackson fired the governor. Today, Toledo is the armpit of the Great Lakes, and the Upper Peninsula is a place of unparalleled natural beauty, populated with renowned scholars, artists, and other people of refinement rare.

There's an exclave of Missouri over the river from St. Joseph in Kansas. You can see the remnant oxbow lake from where the river shifted its course.
Posted by: KCSteve at January 06, 2025 10:06 There's one of those where a bit of IL is now across the river in MO due to river shifting. It's interesting when you have a farm on a river. You actually own the land under the river halfway across, and pay taxes on that. And own any islands within. Sometimes the islands disappear, and sometimes new ones appear. This is based on ca 100 yrs of my family owning the farm on the Rock River. Cool historical note, when Black Hawk came back into IL in 1832 starting the War, he and his band traveled along the trail that ran next to the river and crossed our farm. Well, that went well, upgraded this bare metal install of Fedora to version 41. I've got a bunch of Linux installs I run in Virtualbox VMs, but I've got this one directly installed on the machine. A while back, I let it get too far behind, and it was a mess to get it upgraded to the latest version. They take the old repositories down and move them to some archive site, requiring all sorts of fiddling with the configuration files to get the updates to work. And I got annoyed enough with the fonts to get the right fonts for the browsers installed on this one. Somehow, on the VM installs, those fonts were there, but not on this one. It's something about open source vs proprietary fonts. Posted by: publius (on Fedora, bare metal, doing updates) at January 07, 2025 01:30 AM (w6EFb) 432

The fact that Trump's election results were certified 4 years to the day of the Capitol "riot" will always be amusing to me. A sort of divine coincidence that it panned out this way I guess.

I might make an early night of this and be up for Pixy.

Posted by: Surfperch at January 07, 2025 02:34 AM (i62rn) January 6th is the day for certifying the electoral college votes. In '21, the protesters were protesting the stolen election, hoping against hope Pence would do his fucking job and not certify an obviously fraudulent election. That Biden got more votes in '20 than Chocolate Jesus in '08 screams 'stolen'. Posted by: RickZ at January 07, 2025 02:45 AM (gKDq2) Posted by: Pete Bog at January 07, 2025 02:50 AM (ASk3k) 458

I would be dipping them in the fact that Veep Throat had to certify her own loss today. HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Posted by: JQ at January 07, 2025 02:51 AM (YoCnN) 459
You knew it was coming, WA. Rep Liz Berry has pre-filed HB 1163 requiring a permit to purchase firearms for citizens of the separate country of Washington.

Posted by: JQ at January 07, 2025 02:31 AM (YoCnN) _-_-_-_-_-_ You can get the six gallon variety designed for racing that just has a regular spout over at Beeezos place. Posted by: Don in SoCo at January 07, 2025 02:57 AM (vd6bO) 463
Don in SoCo, I have no use for six gallon size-- I'm an old woman & couldn't possibly lift a full one. Already pump only 4 gallons into the 5-gallon ones that we have.
Thanks, though! Posted by: JQ at January 07, 2025 03:02 AM (YoCnN) 464
But if there are two gallons of air in the can instead of one it will be lighter!
Why yes I did attend public schools. Posted by: Pete Bog at January 07, 2025 03:08 AM (ASk3k) 465

_-_-_-_-_-_ I understand that! I remember one iteration of those lousy spouts where it required pressing the spout on the edge of whatever is being filled - was pretty bad for chainsaws an line trimmers because the pressure required to get the valve to open would capsize the unit being filled. I now use that no-ethanol stuff in a gallon can designed for my chainsaws, but it's $$$. Posted by: Don in SoCo at January 07, 2025 03:08 AM (vd6bO) 466

Posted by: Don in SoCo at January 07, 2025 03:10 AM (vd6bO) _-_-_-_-_-_ I used to watch Saturday morning cartoons with my youngest boy, and we would discuss the difference between cartoon physics and the real thing.
