Sunday Overnight Open Thread - January 5, 2025 [Doof]

doof-barnsunrise.jpg

Howdy Hordelings, and welcome to the first Sunday ONT of 2025! Hopefully you enjoyed the crossover from 2024 to 2025 in whatever way you chose to celebrate it or ignore it. Thanks for stopping by. Perhaps something will hit you as fun or interesting tonight.

No Longer Just Another Date On The Calendar

Tomorrow is January 6th. Until 4 years ago, that date wasn't yet collectively seared into the brains of every American. Sure, political junkies and readers of smart military blogs knew the significance of the date for its quadrennial importance - that of officially certifying results of a presidential election. But the events of January 6, 2021 ensured that for at least a generation or two, it will be a date which lives in infamy. Of course, the divide in our country over which side made it infamous rages on. Was January 6, 2021 an insurrection, or was it an attempt to thwart an insurrection? Rhetorical question for most of us here. Much more on this in JJ's Morning Report tomorrow, I imagine.

For tonight, a suggestion to check out the documentary film "Capitol Punishment" by Nick Searcy and Chris Burgard.

Full film available here (link goes to Rumble)

If you've never seen this film - you should. If you have seen it - you should watch it again.

Here's an enjoyable clip from the end of the film featuring Nick Searcy (Racist White Supremacist Terrorist Insurrectionist) himself.

Feel Good Story

Firefighters Surprise Boy with Brand New Bicycle After Cutting Spokes to Free His Foot

On December 18th, Fernandina Beach Fire Department rushed to the scene of a bicycle collision where a young man was trapped under his bike wheel.

Before the firefighters could free the boy, named KJ, they had to cut his foot loose from where it was trapped among the spokes of the wheel, ultimately ruining the bike.

KJ was then brought to the hospital to be treated for injuries including a nasty ankle sprain, but seeing how it was the holidays, the firemen felt they had to do something to cheer the lad up.

They came to the hospital and surprised him with a brand-new bike and helmet.

The following day, they shared a photograph on the Fernandina Fire Department Facebook page of them surprising KJ, who appears to be asleep, with his new gift.

Teddy Bear Toss

This afternoon in Hershey, PA, more than 100,000 stuffed toys were thrown on to the ice.

Hershey breaks Teddy Bear Toss record…again

The Hershey Bears have once again established a new hockey record, collecting 102,343 stuffed toys during Sunday’s annual Teddy Bear Toss.

This surpasses the club’s previous hockey world record of 74,599 collected in 2024.

***

As part of the club’s Hershey Bears Cares initiative, which showcases the philanthropic activities and volunteer efforts of Bears players and staff members throughout the community, teddy bears and stuffed animals are collected and donated to more than 35 local and regional organizations. Additionally, the Sweigart Family Foundation has pledged to donate a sum to the Children’s Miracle Network that will match the number of stuffed animals thrown on the ice.

Hershey’s annual Teddy Bear Toss has collected more than 566,000 stuffed toys since its inception in 2001.

The 13-time Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears are the American Hockey League affiliate of the Washington Capitals. The Bears won back to back league championships in 2023 and 2024.

DJ Doof – 21st Century Indie Rock Version

Two catchy little tunes for you tonight. Both have an old school pop/rock feel to them.

The first catchy little tune is from 2007. Here are 2 videos for "Here It Goes Again" by OK Go. The first is the official music video, featuring some well choreographed moves on a a bunch of treadmills. The second is a behind the scenes look at the making of the music video.

(Hat Tip to Bluebell)

The second catchy little tune is from 2020. "Van Horn" from the Los Angeles based band Saint Motel.

Members of Congress are getting to work on one powerful Bill that will bring our Country back, and make it greater than ever before. We must Secure our Border, Unleash American Energy, and Renew the Trump Tax Cuts, which were the largest in History, but we will make it even better - NO TAX ON TIPS. IT WILL ALL BE MADE UP WITH TARIFFS, AND MUCH MORE, FROM COUNTRIES THAT HAVE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF THE U.S. FOR YEARS. Republicans must unite, and quickly deliver these Historic Victories for the American People. Get smart, tough, and send the Bill to my desk to sign as soon as possible. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

January 8 would have been Elvis Presley's 90th Birthday. I expect a video.

Additionally, January 8 would have been David Bowie's (who changed his name so as not to be confused with the jockey-sized singer from the Monkees) 78th birthday. I believe a video to mark the occasion. To be warranted.

Thank you for your considerstion.

125 Day 12

One day before the restraining order goes into effect, my "true love" sends me the usual, plus twelve drumming Dutch drummers. Like the piping Polish pipers, they're all on a different beat.

They were the perfect final touch to put my plan into effect. I lined up all the drummers, vice lords, pipers, dancers, and milkmaids, gave them each a cage of swans, geese, blackbirds, colley birds, doves, and partridges, opened the door, and led them out my front gate, herding the cattle.

Down the road, drumming, piping, leaping, dancing, mooing, squawking, honking, tweeting, and cooing. Immediately, we were set upon by local police, agricuture agents, and ICE. At that moment, all the avians were set free, some flying off, some honking and chasing folks around.

The officials took the whole mess off my hands, every bird, bovine, gangster, and illegal alien.

I should be out on bail tomorrow, and will get to return to my disheveled, cow-flopped, but finally solitary home.

There's some kind of disease killing all the pear trees. At least I can chop them up for firewood.

Should be a good rest of the winter.

Before they hauled me off to jail, I met this new girl…

One day before the restraining order goes into effect, my "true love" sends me the usual, plus twelve drumming Dutch drummers. Like the piping Polish pipers, they're all on a different beat.

In the interim, with no Pres or VP, it fell to Atchison to be acting Pres. Atchison recalled he was sleeping for most of his 24-hour "term."

Because bike mechanics are too complicated for anyone younger than Gen X. You think I am kidding? 364 It was worse than that. None of the actors who performed in the radio series of Gunsmoke were picked up for the television series. I suppose that makes sense, but it had to sting. Parley Baer played Chester, Howard McNear played Doc, and Georgia Ellis played Kitty.

The radio show played concurrent with the TV show. Conrad can be heard advertising the new television show. “Be sure to tune in. I know you’re going to like it.”

In response to recent terror attacks in New Orleans and Las Vegas, the Commander of U.S. Northern Command has directed all military installations to immediately implement heightened security measures. These include:

100% ID checks
Random inspections
Suspension of the Trusted Traveler Program
The Trusted Traveler Program was a procedure that allowed DoD-affiliated sponsors to vouch for vehicle occupants to gain entry onto an installation.

Drivers should expect delays and random inspections at entry gates as we enhance the security posture of our installation to ensure our ability to project combat power when and where required.

This is a critical step in ensuring the security and readiness of our installations. Drivers should expect delays at entry gates due to increased inspections.

Julian Calendar, 13 day difference. Until 2100, then 14 days.

I think they all use the Gregorian for civil purposes, so Christmas Day date is called Jan 7th.

Temp has been relative flat, now 36.3F Turned up a smidge over the last few hours. Surface air was very dry, dew point around at 18-19F at sunset.

It started raining high up well before it got down to the ground, evaporating on the way down. Dew point shot up to close to 30F before the drops made it down.

It's interesting, looking at the graphs. When dew point start shooting up, due to that evaporating rain, you could see temp start going down. Vaporizing pulled heat out of the lower air layer. Temp went from about 40 to 35ish.

There wasn't much wind during that period.

You can see the Julian calendar is now 13 days or about two weeks behind (or ahead of, depending on which way you think about it) the seasons/tropical year.

The Gregorian will get about a day behind somewhere around the year 4000 or so. Not all of that is due to the error in the 400 year cycle if the tropical year remained dead constant. It would be around the year 6000 or so, IIRC if so.

Some of it is due to the tropical year getting a smidge shorter, and the earth's rotation slowing.

Turns out there is a rather simple fix. Skip the leap year in the year 3600, have one as normal in the year 4000, and thereafter move to a 500 year cycle.

That would last maybe 10 to 20,000 years, turns out. On the first half, it wouldn't be adding enough leap days, but on the second half it would be adding too many, and average out long term.

That works out because of the shortening of the tropical year and the rotation slowing.

466 A good morning to all the insomaniacals still up, or up already, on this King's Day! The cold front we were promised has started to seep in; yesterday we hit 74 or so, now it's 54. Temps are supposed to drop throughout the morning, but we'll see.

MeTV, never known to change its lineup very often, has done so in a minor way. Mission: Impossible is now at 1 am our time, and The Fugitive is at 2 -- they've swapped the times. And my online guide shows that Janssen's 1970s PI series Harry O is slated for 3 am. I don't believe it; they run that Soledad O'Brien propaganda "news" thing at 3 usually on Mondays. Again, we'll see. But a Fugitive episode, esp. an early one, is always worth watching.

Fret not, Comrade! Your Brutalist concrete apartment will have communal showers, with hot water once a week. Think of the Glorious Environment you will save.
