13 A whisker off! A wisp of smoke from the top slot!

Morning, folken. A solid painting with a dark edge to it -- bright fiery light to the left, deep shadows under the trees to the right, foreshadowing what will come after the fire sweeps through.

That path leading between the trees makes it look like a good place to dump a body, too.

25 In the late 1870s, he gradually became an alcoholic. The process may have begun with the death of his daughter in 1871, which led to a crisis in his art and, possibly, dissatisfaction with his artistic career. In 1882, he was dismissed from his position at the MSPSA. All attempts of his relatives and friends to help him were in vain.
His work suffered dramatically and the last years of his life were spent in poverty. He was usually drunk and often dressed in rags. Finally, he found himself wandering from shelter to shelter. Only the doorkeeper of the MSPSA and Pavel Tretyakov, founder of the Tretyakov Gallery, were present at his funeral in 1897.

127 Russian, as I understand it, lacks a definite article (and maybe an indefinite article too?), so even a Russian who knows English well will sometimes leave the "the" out that native speakers would put in. "I went for walk in woods. Saw squirrels."
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius

Correct. And you can use the word "odin" ("one") for an indefinite article, but you don't see that a lot.

Russians speaking English do have problems with the English articles, like English-speakers speaking Russian have with the perfective/imperfective distinction in verbs.

How much did they tumble? Sit down for this. Allstate is down 4% this week. They may never recover. And Travelers? They’re down 2.5%.

Is there nothing they report that’s true? I mean shit. Yes stock price of insurance companies is down a bit as would be expected. But it’s not a tumble. It’s not unprecedented. It’s low single digits. This is how insurance works. They take in a ton of money from premiums and then pay most of that out when shit like fires happen. It’s not new. It’s SOP and has been for centuries.

But for the 26 year old who wrote the headline history started a week ago.

He also didn't write "Bad Time to Be in Love," although he did produce the last Grand Funk album, and tried to keep the band from breaking up. Incidentally, time-wise we are discussing Beethoven during Custer's Last Stand here.

with the 2024 election, we didn't merely lose a battle, we lost the war. Republicans won because they play the long game, whereas Democrats have always been short-sighted. Also, their highest priority has been pursuit of power with the ends justifying the means, whereas the Democrats' highest priority is good governance and playing by the rules.

Republicans have a lock on the federal government and will use Project 2025 to consolidate their power.

republicans make jokes about how incompetant government is. Now they replace thousands of government jobs with incompetant ass-kissers. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Brief history of insurance companies: Once upon a time, health insurance was for catastrophic events, and healthcare costs were reasonable enough that your average doctor or ER visit was easily payable by most people.

Then government got involved.

And now it's a fustercluck of epic proportions, healthcare costs are astronomically expensive, and the industries built around "health" "care" do more harm than good.

The end.

There are felons on death row ticked that Biden pardoned them, because they are trying to get their cases overturned as not guilty. They want to be exonerated and get freed from prison. The pardon implies yes they are guilty as sin, but here's a freebie with no get out of jail card attached.

I don't think Trump wants the freebie, he wants the court to find him not guilty, fully exonerate him, and humiliate those involved in the witch hunt. Hopefully the case goes through before his four years are up, but justice grinds slowly when it wants to. And I'm sure the prosecution wants it to grind.

Since there's already been a SCOTUS ruling on immunity, there's an avenue to Federal Appeal open, if it is required. What SCOTUS ruled yesterday wasn't against the case; it ruled that this did not require emergency intervention, and their involvement could wait until it reached them through regular order of the court system. I think there is so much reversible error in this case that the New York Court of Appeals will toss the convictions before it gets that far.

Are you a socialist? Because you sound like one.

The companies take a risk that your premiums will outweigh the potential payouts. That’s both for your property and the pool. The only way they make money is if they do not pay claims which exceed the premiums on either your policy or the pool. When the risks or costs go up significantly in a way that will essentially bankrupt the pool, they leave. In California the regulations, housing rebuilding costs and risks due to government not mitigating and of the known risks makes it uninsurable.

I did the performing arts center at Illinois State U and they wanted MDF panels for the balustrades. There are no fastener ratings for MDF so I said I can't engineer that. They sent us a mockup and we were able to attach it to a sort of grating stair landing on our building so that the panel was horizontal. And we had some fat guy stand on it. Worked!

484 Mark R. Levin @marklevinshow 14h
THE LAWFARE CONTINUES
Shame on Roberts and Barrett. That said, seems to me if you're going to seek relief at the Supreme Court, the relief is not to stay the sentence while you pursue appeals in the New York system, but the relief is to have the case thrown out because it is a continuing violation of the Supremacy Clause, federal jurisdiction, etc., as I have argued repeatedly. Now, you are left to ask the New York state appellate courts to, among other things, reject their jurisdiction and enforce the earlier Supreme Court immunity decision.

That said, the 4-constitutionalist justices knew that they needed to step in to end lawfare against an incoming president and the abuses of basic due process by the prosecutor and the acting state judge. And they were right. There is no written opinion, just a short order, so we will never have the benefit of any of their thinking.

485 Mark R. Levin @marklevinshow 14h
Roberts and Barrett have taken the easy and lazy way out. But the precedent has now been set, regardless of what the Supreme Court does in some future date. They have sanctioned the process even if later they reject the substance. Moreover, if the High Court does ultimately take the case and reject the outcome, why would it wait, why would it tolerate an unconstitutional process, why would it permit this to linger over a sitting president contrary to the long-standing position of the Justice Department? The answer: Roberts and Barrett do not want to be criticized in the broader media and are very sensitive to criticism. This happens way too often to Republican appointed justices.

486 I swear I have to explain to someone on a monthly basis that bollards are not vehicle barriers.

That's not what Wiki says: A bollard is a sturdy, short, vertical post. The term originally referred to a post on a ship or quay used principally for mooring boats. In modern usage, it also refers to posts installed to control road traffic and posts designed to prevent automotive vehicles from colliding with pedestrians and structures.

Politics is deeply tribal. It’s hard to get people to change their minds on something they’ve committed to, especially when it would put them at odds with the other members of their tribe.

The right has its kooks and fools, but the left seems to be dominated by them. There are reasonable leftists, but they’re not the ones calling the shots. The moonbats run the left-wing.

The mainstream right’s most controversial opinion is that people who are here illegally shouldn’t be here. The mainstream left’s most controversial opinion is.. what? That little boys can choose to be little girls and should be medicated to make it so?

I dont get it.
Posted by: nurse ratched"

The profit isn't "stealing payouts", it's the fee for the service.

In order to "pay out", you have to have the money to pay out. This is what the insurance bean counters do - crunch numbers on risk vs their incoming premiums. The bean counters that count most accurately allow for a stable business and leeway to take their cut without going under; being stable also attracts more customers.

You will get significantly more efficient bean counting in addition to competition between insurers when Chad and Brad's bass boat depends on the numbers being right than you would if it's up to Shaniqua in the Department of Fat Office Broads. You also DO NOT want the government to be in control of this because then you've effective handed them the ability to use your healthcare as a weapon and spend the funds on stupid shit.
