Actually though I love snow and loved the snow events in DC, especially in the good old days before DC had much clearing equipment, and things would be shut down for days. Posted by: rhomboid at January 05, 2025 07:05 PM (1m82a) 13

Now that you have when to carry sorted out, when do you draw the weapon?
Insty posted a link (yesterday?) to a NRA piece on deterrence vs defense as to why you carry. The idea was that carrying so you can 'show' your gun to a bad guy and he'll leave you alone might be bad if you don't follow the legal justification that would apply to actually shooting them (imminent grave bodily harm, etc.). IFF* you think imminent harm is upon you and you draw your weapon as one stage toward shooting the bad guy and you hope that step makes to decide on something other than harm to you, that's perfectly fine. A lot of the comments centered on either open carry as a form of deterrence, and the idea that concealed carry works to deter - but only if enough people carry and enough bad guys get shot for the rest of them to re-think things. (* IFF = If, and only if) Posted by: GWB at January 05, 2025 07:12 PM (WlvCt) 25

Skip we had my dad's Army binoculars (salvaged during a major surplus equipment destruction session he witnessed) for decades. Also, when I was a kid, the web gear, back-pack, and helmet liner. The family Lionel trains are stored in his wooden footlocker. He never left CONUS, was in the Army Medical corps.
An Israeli guy on the twatters (Soviet emigre) said some trophy Wehrmacht binos were his family souvenir for many years, and functioned well (I'll bet, kraut optics). Posted by: rhomboid at January 05, 2025 07:13 PM (1m82a) 28

Weasel is not like a beacon, because they draw fire. One thing you have to beware of when it comes to the post-war P38s (subsequently the P1 and P4, I believe). I read somewhere that the frame tends to bend because of the action of steel slide on aluminum. I think Walther dealt with the issue by putting a reinforcing hex bolt on the left side of the frame. Just my recollection of something I read awhile back, and I confess I may be recollecting wrongly. Posted by: Paco at January 05, 2025 07:14 PM (mADJX) 33

I'm pretty sure the Quebec-made How It's Made TV series airs in the US [maybe on Discovery??] but I just caught a couple of appropriate ones -- how air rifles are made; and how shooting clays are made.
The Anschütz air rifle factory was producing the Anschütz 9015 rifle with Stabilisator; calibre 4.5mm/.117 [of an inch I assume]. "The stabilizer is a balancing compound that is released at the same time as the shot. It is designed to minimise recoil. In each bolt of the 9003 and 8002 models there is a second hole that branches off some air at the ready to fire and thus sets a small release link in motion. On the 9003, a stabiliser mass is suspended from this release link under spring tension as standard. The stabiliser mass can easily be retrofitted to the 8002." And the clay pigeons aren't made of terracotta today as I had guessed from their reddish/orange colour but of a petroleum pitch [or resin where demanded by law]. They were from a French company that started automated production in 1947. Posted by: andycanuck (hovnC) at January 05, 2025 07:22 PM (hovnC) 56

Got on the subject of .41 Magnums last week and had some pleasant exchanges with a couple of aficionados. I neglected to mention that, in addition to the revolvers, I also have a Henry Big Boy Steel lever action in .41 Magnum. I think Henry is currently the only company making a rifle in this caliber (if the company, indeed, still is; I bought mine probably nine or so years ago). I seem to recall that Marlin made a lever action .41 Magnum at one time.

Hi! Just popping in to say that one should take the legal analysis from the drone video very critically. In a nutshell, the FAA regulates the airspace so there's no such thing as a private party "owning" the airspace over his/her property. As a result, there's no trespass possible.
Another thought. There's no law against taking photos of a house from the street since the street is public. Since the airspace is public (though subject to narrow restrictions by the FAA like airports and such), the same rule applies. So really, while it's nice to imagine, the reality is that shooting down a drone over your property is very very wrong. That said, nothing about, hm, an accidental collision between your drone and one over your property.... Posted by: WitchDoktor at January 05, 2025 07:26 PM (BUX/N) 67

Finally had a pistol event which did not clash with long range rifle. Being as the carry 1911 hadn't been shot in a while, I thought it best to clear the dust and lint from it, while seeing if I can still hit sumpin' with it. I concentrated on draw, retention, sight alignment and trigger squeeze, which, shockingly, was good enough for a third place finish. And I wasn't even really trying to go fast. I was pleased, though, the press out from the body with the 1911 was smooth and got the sights on target properly. Even better, even after months in the holster, the Kimber ran flawlessly. I like a safety on autoloaders, being of a certain age when 99.9% of them had a safety. Saying that, on my little Heritage single action plinker they have incorporated a safety (probably legal consul bothering the design team). Damn safety on a single action revolver, or any revolver, is annoying. I keep a scruffy looking Glock 17 as a nightstand gun and I'm finally, after a couple decades, accepting that the trigger is the safety.

I enjoyed that offering on "shooting down drones" and why it's probably not a good idea. That being said, I know how we Americans think. I know someone is going to get innovative in the near future and create a new way of taking down pesky drones that doesn't involve firearms. It many sound corny, but it is the "American Way." Just tell us we can't do something, and the great loophole search begins.
It usually results a simplified technique that's been staring us in the face the whole time. Someone tweaks it, modifies it, and perfects it. The next thing you know, the government is warning us of the need to regulate further to negate it. But, before that happens it will be open season. Maybe I'm not well informed. My revolvers don't have those, but that's because they're all "old" S&Ws or Colts. Wait, think the Model 60 is a newer one, guess I'll go check. But didn't get a "key" for it when I bought it from a guy (a real score, that one, nice CrimsonTrace grip, no real wear on the gun, and the total price was well under reasonable market value).

On another range note, I was quite please with the results of my first full reloading session. I've a bunch of Hornady brass and did the whole cleaning, sizing and loading schtick with the cartridges, using up some bullets which won't be used in matches, though, they are decent bullets.
End result even though it wasn't great brass: Extreme spread of 9 and some very nicely grouped holes punch in a target. I also headed over and got my dope for the next KYL match. Sort of amazing how things will work if one listens from the wise words of Weaselsan Gunsei when he speaks of reloading. Area denial is a thing, and the company I work for has been working on some interesting techniques. The one I like is basically an air cannon (no projectile) that shoots a blast of disruptive air toward the drone and messes up the props. Limitation there for us regular folks is altitude...you'd need a pretty beefy cannon (or fan) to get results at even 100 feet. Posted by: WitchDoktor at January 05, 2025 07:41 PM (oEwws) 97

Before the Ukeistan unpleasantness I noticed several different anti-drone systems being displayed and discussed, mostly the kind using nets to mess up the propulsion. Shotgun rounds even.
But the sorts of drones now in use are really an air defense issue, not a niche problem. Have seen new Russian designs at military shows incorporating pretty basic existing technologies like radars/optics and traditional weapons like 23mm. Compared to fast-movers/aircraft they seem like pretty easy air defense targets. Posted by: rhomboid at January 05, 2025 07:46 PM (1m82a) 111

UK Times of London:
Gangsters are converting imitation guns used for historical re-enactments and school sports days into lethal weapons at “firearm factories” across the country. Revolvers, British Bren machine guns and German MP 40 submachine guns are among the replica firearms being altered to fire live ammunition. Last year the number of discharges from converted imitation, antique or blank weapons outnumbered those by real firearms for the first time (64 compared with 42). https://tinyurl.com/nhef6upf Canadian blog link BTW, displayed on the Times' webpage: Related articles Film industry must change use of guns, says Baldwin November 01 2021, 12.01am GMT Will Pavia, New York Posted by: andycanuck (hovnC) at January 05, 2025 07:49 PM (hovnC) 120

105 When I lived in Erie, I stopped at a dollar store to get an umbrella. It had started to rain, I was going to the VA, and parking was bad due to construction. I come out and three hoodlum looking guys come across the parking lot saying they wanted to talk to me. I had a Model 36 holstered and just kind of let my jacket go back to show it. They left, I go to the VA (and secured the gun before going in). Told my landlord, a lawyer about the incident at the dollar store, and he said brandishing was sometimes a grey area. He asked if my hand was on the gun, I said no, he said probably not brandishing.

I've noticed an odd cultural difference between CO and my southern state where I live now. CO has much more restrictive laws. Magazine capacities, configurations, etc, are all heavily regulated. You have to have concealed weapon permits, and so forth.
Here, it's Constitutional carry, and you don't have nearly so many rules about what sort of guns you can own. But a holdover cultural thing in CO, from before the Occupation by California, is the loose rules about *where* you can shoot. All federal lands and most state lands are wide open, as long as you're a certain distance from a roadway, and have a backstop, and clean up after yourself. Here, you have to search for public outdoor ranges, which are few and far between, and most have lots of restrictions, from hours, to parking, to entry frees, types of weapons allowed, and so forth. It's very cumbersome, and it seems like most people just go ahead and join a club to use outdoor ranges on private land. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at January 05, 2025 08:08 PM (BI5O2) 163

Y's Dice, my impression is that federal lands (BLM) are generally open to shootin', but much depends on the local management/rangers. Good ones work with experienced shooters to keep places clean and safe. My range is bordered by BLM land on a few sides. The stretch that runs down to the border is well suited to shooting, many good backstop hills. The ranger there was locally famous, worked with shooters to keep the area safe and clean. Not sure about his replacement after he retired, will have to ask.
The lead RSO I replaced on my duty day moved to TN. She has commented about the comparative lack of shooting venues she now has at hand. Almost all of the state land shooting areas in this county were ruined by idiots - not closed by the idiotic government - despite enormous efforts to clean them up and keep them sane. The federal areas along the border have become dicey as BP has requested people not shoot there - they are literally dealing with, um, other "shooters" from the south. Re aluminum frames and steel slides, you have to keep ait well lubed or you get galling on the aluminum slide surfaces. Second, never try to monkey with the feed ramp on an aluminum frame pistol. Very thin layer of anodizing over a much softer core which if you scrape thru the top layer, you get rapid wear.
If you want a hollow point feed on older semi auto pistols, then you have to get classic bullet designs like the 9BLP Federal. Need a longer oal plus a bullet ogive as close to a fmj profile as possible. No truncated cones or funky profiles. Posted by: whig's phone at January 05, 2025 08:17 PM (ctrM5) 183

Slowly, then all at once. I'm grateful to Weasel for helping get a "Jim's Gun List" started on his own blog page. I had sold two from the list, with a third "promised-out" (which promise shall be kept.) Oh, and the Spotting Scope is promised to one here, as well. Private correspondence to follow. Earlier this week though, a friend from Central Texas swooped in with fistsfullaFranklins, and bought the remaining 42 guns, all of the reloading gear, rests and bags, every bit of the minor-ancillary gear, and the primary, large gun safe. And just like that, Herself New Dawn now owns more guns than I do. I'm gonna surely shed some tears when I see that box van head North up the road. Tools. Tools gotta go, too. But I can "Yard Sale" those. Would've been a bit awkward, holding a front-yard Gun Show, freaking out the neighbors and drivers-by! Funeral is paid for, now. As a Midshipman, I got to enjoy the physical at the local AFEES (renamed to MEPS on 01 Jan 1982), the highlight of which was the hemorrhoid exam, performed by a flamingly gay doc.
We're directed to line up backs to the wall. He flounces in, and makes a huge display of putting on rubber gloves, spending an inordinate amount of time smoothing them out. He then directs us to turn around, drop our skivvies, and "spread 'em", and then walks down the line, slowly. During my 3rd year repeat of this, he gets about half way down the line, and suddenly squeals "Oooooh, gross!" and initiates a very rapid retrograde maneuver from the room. We're all wondering what happened. One gentleman seemed quite satisfied with himself, and as he was about where it happened, questions started to be asked. He turned around, bent over, spread 'em, and displayed a nice amount of chunky peanut butter he'd thoughtfully deployed. Posted by: Duncanthrax at January 05, 2025 08:38 PM (a3Q+t) 234

I have a reminder set on my phone for generator maintenance the first Saturday of each quarter. I blew off the reminders last two times (this generator has found a home inside rather than in an outside hut so it looks like it is brand new out of the box) and the reminder just came up I did not skip it. Got a new tank of propane and went to fire it up and apparently on the first test I had scavenged the regulator and hose from a defunct grill for the test. And also this summer when I was cleaning up and disposing of that grill, I sent the regulator and hose off with it. So, new tank of propane, but, no, I can't run the generator! Off to Lowe's to pick up the part. Generator starts and runs like a champ!

Is a 50 cal Desert Eagle better than a 45?
45 what? ACP? LC, .454 Casull 50 is far more expensive to fire; you don't actually fire it, you detonate the round - which makes it less than ideal indoors in an ad hoc situation unless you like your ears to bleed. Lots of concussion, those on the firing line will hate you. The firearm itself is heavy, good luck finding a holster. Totally not concealable unless you are wearing an oversized trench coat. The sites suck; you really need to upgrade the grips because the cheap plastic ones will wreck ungloved hands. .50AE 1500 ft/lbs vs 518 ft/lbs for .45 Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at January 05, 2025 09:10 PM (rHxhM) 299

The IRS said last year's 81 percent error rate dropped to only 73 percent this past year. Unbelievable. The Internal Rectal Service screws up 73 percent of the time and then brags about it. If that is not enough to cause your 1040 to crepitate, IRS agents gave the wrong advice to taxpayers only 50 percent of the time last year, according to an investigation. Beam me up. The IRS does not need more workers; the IRS does not need more money. These stumbling, fumbling, bumbling mistake-prone nincompoops have got to go... abolish these nincompoops at the IRS.
