Happy Saturday, everyone! Today is landscaping and puttering day (mostly). The fires have been on my mind, and it's been a while since we discussed landscaping and preparation for fire and other emergencies. The photos above and below are from Norman Winter. Entry landscaping. I guess you can think about whether anything would fall during high winds.

By-Tor caught some of the Santa Ana winds. From earlier this week:

Ok, going on three days now, and I’m about done with this wind. It blew a tile off my roof on to my car. I know it’s not the same as what people in LA are dealing with, but it’s getting old.

palm by.jpg

Some palm trees are more wind-resistant than others. Plan when planting.

2 I can see the tops of plants in the yard poking up through the snow. Warmer today, so it's melting off, though.

3 We had high winds some days earlier this week so was out burning limbs that are all over.
And heard a Broad Wing Hawk not far away, I thought they migrated but guess this one didn't.

6 My garden is covered with snow thanks to some brief, blizzardy conditions the other day. I got my first seed catalogue last week and the pictures tempt me to buy far more seeds than I need.

7 Not exactly sure what that door trick is doing.
But if you have big space between door bottom and frame at the bottom one could stick a piece of cardboard between hinge and frame at the bottom.
Same idea if it hits at top corner, doing that at top would kick it down.

8 Ok, she it taping a piece of sandpaper to the floor

9 I always buy more seeds than I need to.
Insurance, I guess. I can't help myself.

10 And I think about the time a few years ago when pup-in-law and I removed 2 doors to sand the bottom.

Now you tell me!!!!

11 I have all the raised beds I ordeed, except for an additional two from last week. Have the bulk of the seeds. I don't expect to start work on this until maybe February. I thought I'd get a better price on the beds this time of year.

13 I love the look of flowers "pouring" out of a pot, but here it would be an invitation for wasps or vermin to take up residence in that shelter. Does make me want to do something different in the area around the front door, though.

My gardening today consisted of trimming an oak tree. There is a terrible fungus that gets into the sap line and causes "wet wood" that kills oaks. To prevent infection, trimming must be done when the fungus is dormant and the sap isn't running.

The bonus is that it's a lot easier to clean up when there are no leaves.

14 Prepping the rusted raised garden poles over the raised bed (5.5'x23'). The poles are about 6' tall. I put the first coat of rust converter on them with a chip brush. I'll put another coat on in 2 days and after that dries I'll spray paint them black.

I'm going to use my garden torch to burn off the weeds and weed seeds before I rototill the raised bed then after watering and spreading mulch and azomite (volcanic rock dust) I'll rototill that in as well.
Amazon will be delivering a bunch of parts Monday. I'll be building a 4x8' grid of 1/2" drip line with 3 small holes on each side probably Tuesday, each square of the grid will be 1ft.
I saw the grid on a gardening video years ago and built them for the garden we left behind. I checked what they cost pre-built 168 bucks. I have less than 3 bucks in parts coming and I have probably 100ft of 1/2" drip line in the shed. That'll be quite a bit cheaper than buying.

15 We live on a navigable river that leads to a large lake., surrounded by both state and federal forest.

Every summer, we have every spigot on every side of the house hooked up with no less than 100 feet of garden hose. Additionally, we have a water pump that comes out of storage that we place adjacent to the river. Hooked to that is 400 feet of 2" firehose.
That is then unfurled and spans the length of the property up to the county road. We douse the property and adjacent forest occasionally throughout the summer if no rains occur. The hose blasts water upward of 80 feet in the air, to the top of the forest canopy.

We could likely douse our house and four other neighboring houses from that one little pump.

Could we survive an inferno like LA? I don't know. Will die trying, I guess.

I must say, the spider web of hoses isn't the most sophisticated garden landscape, but the reality of the consequences of living in a forest requires at least a nod.

It's a filter. One of my not-29 pals does a bigger-lips, no-wrinkles, makeup-adding filter on her crafting vids. She was worried that one of her peers would out her, but I think she's going to be fine. She uses her maiden name and looks more like her granddaughter than herself!

19 I priced a yard of mulch from a local worm farm. ~170 bucks. Ouch. But I'll buy it anyway and some worm castings as well to freshen the raised bed.

22 My bathroom door is misshapen because someone sanded the bottom instead of doing what I did when I moved in: shoved cardboard under the far edge to jack it up, then hammer down ALL pins in the hinges. There's almost no gap at the top now.

Does anyone have a good railing-top herb garden solution?

Have been playing with designs but haven't found anything online.

24 Sometimes the pressure from the hose is so great one could be lifted off one's feet. It takes a significant amount of strength to reposition the hoses when filled.

Had that going on with my front door. Only $16k to fix! They ended up placing nine additional helical jacks across the front of my house. Now there's jacks every five feet all the way around. Over the last decade, about $65k has been put into foundation repair and floor support work. About $20k from me.

44 From Boise area; lows 25-30 F, highs 37-45. It snowed yesterday evening, melted off today. Ongoing air stagnation advisory.

Husband has been dealing with putting leaves in the trash because my back is sore - I haven't even walked outside except to the mailbox. Last time I was out back, I did see Johnny Jump-Up pansies flowering by the shed. This winter's been unusually warm so far - we haven't had any temperatures below 20.

Husband also hung all 8 of the sea glass and tile mosaics in our master bathroom, and is now looking for photos we may want to hang on walls.

We've taken the ornaments off the tree - found 2 more marked with the Shiny-Brite name (pale blue metallic inside), and one more that looks quite old and might be pre-war (similar top to the 2 clear glass ones I sent photos of last week, but metallic inside).
