I always keep instant on hand for emergencies. I also have about 5 bags of Vietnamese 3-in-1 individual instant coffee packets on hand but that is not for emergencies, that is because I forgot to tell my wife I stopped drinking it because of the extra sugar and hydrogenated oils in the whitener.

My friends who bought the Tesla had me over for Christmas dinner, and they had a little table-top brazier that burned small wood, that looked like Jenga sticks. I got my old Makita power miter saw out last week, and cut up a mess of scrap wood into Jenga-stick sized pieces, and filled a large cardboard carton for them.

From when I was six until I moved out, that wood splitter was me. When I moved out, dad bought a hydraulic wood splitter.
This however, was a young couple needing some help sawing up some maple logs their pastor had piled up in his back woodlot. It was a pile about 10' tall and we had to get on top "leaping from log to log" in the rain, decode the jack-straw, saw off manageable hunks, slide them off the top onto the road, and then saw them up into stove lengths and get them into the truck.
by the end I dared not stop because I would stiffen up.

There's a story in former Alaska Governor Jay Hammond's autobiography about that.

In his younger days, he worked some law enforcement gig out in the Bush. While making his rounds, he found an old trapper in his cabin, sadly deceased. The guy was already frozen, so he put him in his bed and threw the cat in the bedroom to keep the shrews from chewing on him, planning to get some help and come back to take care of the corpse.

Well.... the weather turned shitty and he couldn't get back out there for a couple of weeks.

My father was a Bohunk. His Mom was from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, some siblings born over there while Dad was from PA (b. 191. Day 11

Eleven pickled Polish pipers piping at least give some music for the emaciated twenty-seven Russian ballerinas to dance to, except every piper seems to be playing a different tune.

The Lords a-Leaping order has been corrected, so now instead of toads, I have eleven Lords in my living room. Unfortunately, they seem to be Vice Lord gangsters. Lords a-looting.

Meanwhile, the Amish farmer says that both the dairy cattle and the German milkmaids he took on are diseased, so he sent them back, and now there's forty of each crowding my yard and house. And that much cow flop really stinks. The milkmaids aren't all that fresh, either.

The lawyer says the restraining order goes active on Monday. I just have to survive tomorrow.

But I have a plan. All the swans, geese, pheasants, colly birds, hens, and partridges that are left have been put in cages, awaiting my big surprise for tomorrow.

Gonna have a nice pear orchard when this is all over, though.

Pho is really yummy. Last year, I found an instant variety here that was not too bad. Haven't seen it this year. I would crumble up a slab of that Steak-Ums mystery meat into it, and it made a reasonable facsimile of the lean beef Pho. Tasty cheap meal.

My mother was part of ALTCS (Aizona Long Term Care benefits program) under AHCCCS and now they plan to file a claim against her estate for reimbursement for ALTCS "expenditures for medical payments made on the members behalf."

Long story short, this by itself could wipe out any money I see from the sale of my parent's home.
That may not seem possible, but they had a reverse mortgage on the home and has to be repaid from the sale of the home.

Did not see this coming.

Thank you. I think we've all seen/experienced some level of it.

Farms. That's the one that scares me. The death taxes on inheriting a farm, not the most financially productive of businesses, are burdensome. Told the story but had a great-uncle, had a farm in MD. When he retired, no one would buy the farm as a farm, only as land for development. The farm I ran around on is now a subdivision. Either families sell that way or to a Bill Gates-type buying up farms. But families can longer afford to keep their own farms as an inheritance. That, to me, is depriving us peasants of generational wealth.

What is it they say, it's a small club and we're not in it? They don't want us in it. Every trap is designed to maintain our status as peasants. Same as it ever was.

Same with my friend. Her Mom died right around a year ago. She just sold the parents' house the first week of December. She was able to purchase their leased car, so now the estate, such as it was, is done. The year was a pain for my friend, though. Just so many things to do. One thing I mentioned that she didn't think about, among the hundreds of things to think about: Taking her parents off the voting rolls.

I felt that way in Argentina (ex in car accident) trying to speak Spanish, using a pocket English-Spanish Dictionary. Locals appreciated the effort and most were more than willing to help. IMO, it's a respect thing and most responded in a positive manner. I got very few snobby no's.

I think you're very correct about the idea of respect, @RickZ. Some cultures seem to be better about the mutuality of the respect.

Germans know their language is challenging. It's not that French isn't, but if Mark Twain is to be believed then it's far easier to learn French well than it is to learn German.

Most of the world understands the U.S. is kind of in a bubble in which there has historically been no opportunity to practice languages other than English, which is a key to really learning another language.

I mean old recipes, with ingredients I'm not sure even I could find in NYC, like hare for chopped hare steak or piquant hare liver. George Lang was not a chef; he was a food anthropologist and restauranteur.

In New York he had the Russian Tea Room, in Budapest he restored the Gundel with Ronald lauder.


George Lang was distinguished in ways that my sleepy head cannot detail right now.

But that book is full of even the craziest recipes (bread soup is my favorite of poor people food then) but it is an anthropological and historical and cultural guide through not only food, but society.

We lived in Tucson for two years. The town has an agreement with Kitts Peak Observatory to keep the city lights relatively dim. That enabled stargazing from the outskirts of town.

Terlingua's nighttime sky was definitely impressive.

On a clear night in North Dakota outside town the view was also pretty amazing. Comet Hale-Bopp flew past while I was stationed up there and I remember a couple good views of it. The aurora borealis even made an appearance once or twice.

With Dad's stroke, then passing, and us traveling 4000 miles in three weeks by car, I haven't exactly been able to keep up with daily walks nor sticking to my diet routine.
So despite freezing my butt off, the walk was a good and necessary thing this morning.

Lots of places in the country where you can see the stars. We have beautiful night skies but you don’t need to go as nowhere as we are to see the Milky Way as a carpet across the sky.

Rural areas are much better however.

Sort of. A lot of those recipes are high end, fancy Dan stuff, and time consuming. But reading it, I got the feel of 1914 and before, that kind of culinary study. Can't see how the commies improved Hungarian food any, maybe creativity but not taste.

Still have to try the chicken paprikas.

It seems to me you must have to get VERY far out to see good stars. Here in Cali, the old Palomar Observatory, wayyyyy in the middle of nowhere, is obsolete due to age, but also useless anymore because of light pollution. And like I say, it's out in the boonies.

This option isn't available to everyone, but you can see zillions of stars and quite a few meteors if you can grab a Viper at night with NVGs and fly it out over the Yellow Sea.

Mom was Hungarian, first generation American. Her mom came here in 1907 from Tiszavid, Hungary. My entire neighborhood was pretty much Magyar back in the 50's, and we all belonged to the various Hungarian churches in the area. My Hungarian grandmother lived with us for a short period after she had a stroke. I began to pick up the language as a kid, but after grandmom passed when i was 5, not much Hungarian was spoken in the house. mom would carry on conversations with the many Hungarian neighbors, but once they began to die off, she had very few people left to speak her parents' language. I lost most of what I learned, except for a few choice words and phrases. Heh. And yes, I heard "lekvar" many times around the holidays because of it being used in the pastries mom and other women would bake. Oh, the food!! Wife is Irish, and after 52 years, still thinks we're crazy.
