Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The House Is Voting for Speaker; Johnson Looks Likely to LoseChip Roy refused to vote for Johnson, Andy Biggs didn't vote, and Thomas Massie voted for Tom Emmer. Update: Another Republican has voted against Johnson, instead voting for Jim Jordan. I think that's it. I don't think we can lose four votes, and we lost them. Update: It's worse than that -- the Republican majority is so thin we can only lose one single Representative's vote. According to Nick Sortor, I'm right, the Republicans cannot agree on a Speaker. Johnson loses and there is no other known candidate who can win. I'm not sure what happens if they don't elect a Speaker. I assume there will be further balloting, but if the Perpetual No Caucus keeps voting "no," then there is no Speaker, Congress can't act, and Congress can't certify Trump and Vance's victory. Update: Thanks to TheJamesMadison, this article claims it's not true that Congress can't act -- or certify the president -- in the absence of a Speaker. It says someone can take over as acting speaker. As potentially extended battles to elect new speakers of the House of Representatives become more frequent, a common fear is repeatedly expressed in the national news media that the chamber cannot act until the new speaker is chosen. But here's the thing: If Trump is only certified under an "acting speaker," the left will go back insisting he is an Illegitimate Usurper and it's 2016 #ResistanceReborn again. Can we just not fuck around to grandstand for once?

I fully expect Johnson to force through legislation to reapportion House seats based on the corrected Census numbers which would move 17 seats, mostly from blue to red states, in order to strengthen his position as Speaker with a larger majority.
Because he's going to ruthlessly pursue Trump's agenda no matter what. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, building tension with Henri-Georges Clouzot at January 03, 2025 02:30 PM (GBKbO) 19

I guess they can vote to make Johnson (or somebody else? who?) temporary Speaker, but they actually have to get the votes to do that.
They should do this and then certify the election and take a recess until the 27th. Trump can then order the Senate recessed on day one and get all his nominees through. Wikipedia, in part, "Stacey Elizabeth Plaskett[1][2] (/ˈplæskɪt/ PLASS-kit; born May 13, 1966) is an American politician and attorney serving since 2015 as the non-voting delegate to the United States House of Representatives from the United States Virgin Islands' at-large congressional district. Plaskett has practiced law in New York City, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Before 2008, Plaskett was a member of the Republican Party, and was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve in the Civil Division of the United States Department of Justice.[3] She switched to the Democratic Party in late 2008 because she believed it was a better place to have new ideas heard.[4] She served as a House manager (prosecutor) during the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump, the first non-voting House member to do so.[5] "On January 12, 2021, Plaskett was named a House impeachment manager for the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump in response to the storming of the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.[26] ... she was introduced by lead impeachment manager Jamie Raskin of Maryland, her former constitutional law professor..." According to the Cato Institute:
"The 12th and 20th Amendments, the Electoral Count Reform Act (ECRA), and the mechanics of the Electoral College itself make clear that Congress’s count is not what makes a person into the president-elect, duly entitled to take office on Inauguration Day. Even if Congress fails to act, Trump and J.D. Vance (setting aside 14th Amendment arguments about Trump’s eligibility) would still take office at noon on January 20, 2025." This makes sense to me, and I suspected it might be the case. I think this whole "if we don't get our cuckling ensconced in time, there will be no Preznit, OMG" thing is just stray voltage. That said, Trump says he's cool with Johnson. Though I disagree with that, I disagree with the GOP disobeying Trump for any reason. They're worthless, they ruined America, and they wouldn't even still be a fucking political Party without him. I don't know why anybody wold want to be Speaker anyhow.
It's turned into a terrible job. If you're a Republican you always end up as the bad guy once some kind of budget has to be passed... at the last minute, and you get blamed for spending too much or too little on a 1500 page bill crammed with all the favors you had to give out to get votes and all the lobbyist & bureaucrat demands that ballooned the budget. Then they spend most of their time begging for donor money and listening to lobbyists followed by dealing with all the drama inherent in a body of 435 people and their staffs before finally getting around to passing bills and performing all the ceremonial duties. It's no wonder they've got problems choosing a Speaker. Nobody wants the job. I don't know who, beyond Johnson, would be good at it. People like Jim Jordan but I don't know if he'd be any better once it comes to budget bills. Who, that most of us like, could get the votes to be Speaker and be effective in the job? I'm glad we have such awesome people in congress. Posted by: Thomas Paine Dem House rules in several of the last Congresses under Pelosi control have allowed delegates to vote and serve as voting members on committees plus Committee of the Whole. GOP, when in the majority, have in the past stripped that voting ability from delegates. Dunno if the current rules package is different from prior GOP congresses. Remember, House has no continuing rules unlike the Senate and must vote on the rules package every new Congress (or possibly during a change in control midterm but I would have to investigate those few instances--happened last during the revolt against Speaker Cannon if I recall rightly). I agree. There's nothing in the Constitution that justifies the idea of any American territory not being a state, part of a state, or destined for statehood. We aren't the freaking Spaniards, or English, or French. If they want to stay and become a state, fine. Otherwise, cut 'em loose.
Maybe let 'em have Free Assocciation like the Northern Marianas and Palau. But nothing more. Posted by: Bulg at January 03, 2025 02:47 PM (77rzZ) We have the perfect amount of states right now. Cut them loose. The only reason to make PR or any of the territories a state would be if having 2 new senators would help the R's. It won't. It will help the D's, which is why they constantly push for more states. These are poor countries (territories) with very different cultures from us and there is no reason for us keep them as colonies. We get nothing out of this deal other than some military bases. When Alaska was a territory, we didn't pay federal taxes unless we worked for the feds. However, we did have to pass through customs in Seattle while going to the Lower 48. For some reason they kept demanding that after statehood, so there was a strong movement to change that, and folks here started using their garbage dump punch card as official ID at the customs gates. The idiots finally got the message and knocked it off.

Who, that most of us like, could get the votes to be Speaker and be effective in the job?
Posted by: SpeakingOf ========== You can be effective with a small majority but it requires a ruthlessness by mandating caucus control over legislation passage on major items. Dems during the 1970's and 1980's had problems as Southern Democrats often defected to the GOP giving the GOP nominal control over some issues. Jim Wright, when he became speaker, isolated and destroyed members that crossed lines to the extent that many of these members retired and were replaced by GOP. That adherence to caucus control over member votes plus the mega fund raising by leadership under Tony Coehlo (maj whip), set the stage for Newt to become speaker in 94. Both the Dem and GOP went after committee chairs when in power. The Dems demanded major committees no longer be allocated by solely seniority during the mid 1970's and Newt's GOP takeover included a term limit of six years for committee chairs. Dems have no term limit on chairs. Thus, you get more turnover in the GOP ranks than the Dems. Being a back bencher sucks if you want to have power in the House whether the majority is Dem or GOP. Anti-inflammatory drugs taken by millions of pregnant women around the world may raise the risk of autism in their babies.
A study looked at the impact on children who are exposed to glucocorticoids - a class of steroids - in the womb. Those prenatally exposed to the drugs were between 30 and 50 percent more likely to be diagnosed with autism compared to children whose mothers did not take them. We need a guy who will promise regular order, no more CRs, and mean it, if we're ever going to get the budget under control.
I don't know who that is. Posted by: SpeakingOf Not quite. You simply need enough GOP votes in the House to sustain a veto. Trump should use his veto early and often and end the whole gubmint shutdown theater. We had quite a few shutdowns that the public never noticed after the passage of the 1974 Budget guidance legislation. Wasn't until Bush v. Dem Congress before Gulf War that these became the media circus they are today. Necessary spending is exempt from shutdowns and that makes it glaringly obvious that there is a way to stop most useless spending by simply vetoing it and pointing to the egregious spending items in the vetoed bill. CNN, What we're covering
• Speaker chosen: Mike Johnson was elected speaker of the House today after flipping two GOP opponents, but he’ll face a big challenge in Congress with the narrowest House majority in nearly 100 years. See the vote here. • Trump’s involvement: President-elect Donald Trump spoke to the two holdouts, Reps. Ralph Norman and Keith Self, as the vote was held open to give Republicans time to secure their backing for Johnson, multiple sources told CNN. • Victory certification: Looming over the vote was the question of what would happen if the House had not elected a speaker by Monday, the day lawmakers are supposed to certify Trump’s win in the presidential election.
-------- This is interesting to go along with my theory about birth control pills being the cause of the rise of autism as well as this gender crap. Posted by: ace --------- Differs whether the vacancy occurs during the second year of Congress or the first year. First year, I think the longest state stautory time period from the certified declaration of vacancy is 75 days or such by a state except in a few states where they have general or primary elections this year--NJ and VA, I think. Normal is more like 60 days from declaration of vacancy and some states allow party caucuses to declare candidates rather than hold a primary election. Second session of Congress, depending on the timing of the resignation, it gets rolled up into general election season to save states money on elections. Last term, I think, a GOPe critter in Wisconsin purposefully delayed his resignation just so that the seat could not be filled by special election.
