Top Story

  • Net Neutrality is dead. Again. (Reuters) (archive site)

The FCC's long-running smash-and-grab attempt to enforce Net Neutrality rules by classifying ISPs as Title II common services looks to have been killed off for good by the Sixth Circuit ruling that ISPs are Title I information services, and that given the Supreme Court's Loper Bright decision nullifying Chevron deference, the FCC can fold its regulations until they are all sharp corners and shove them where the sun don't shine.

Given that the Republicans are going to be taking over the FCC in a couple of weeks, there is unlikely to be an appeal; even the commies running the show right now have given up.

Not that Net Neutrality is inherently bad, rather that categorising ISPs as Title II carriers hands all the power to a different bunch of crooks without actually fixing anything.

Tech News

  • The Onyx Boox Note Max is a laptop from another dimension. (Liliputing)

Extremely thin at just 4.6mm, it has a 3200x2400 e-ink display. Black and white only on this model; it's aimed at reading and note-taking, though it does run a full version of Android and can run other applications. Badly.

    Interesting though.

  • Samsung is hedging its bets at CES with a 27" 240Hz 4k OLED gaming monitor and also a 27" 3D 4k monitor. (Tom's Hardware and Ars Technica)

Very little detail on the 3D model as yet except that it doesn't require glasses, having the lenses built into the display panel. How well this will work is uncertain.

    (Poorly. It will work poorly.)

  • What else can we expect at CES next week? Mostly AI slop. (Tech Crunch)

    Hooray.

  • Speaking of AI slop, Facebook is committed to it. (New York Magazine)

Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp will all be working to replace human users with bots, which will... Entirely defeat the purpose of the entire enterprise.

    Don't look at me.

  • Usage of Windows 10 grew at the expense of Windows 11 in December, despite the fact that free support of Windows 10 ends this year. (The Register)

Retail customers will be able to pay $30 for one year of extended support when free support ends in October. After that you're on your own.

Which is pretty much true regardless.

  • Passkeys are here and they suck. (Ars Technica)

The most obvious problem is that ever time a site offers to let you log in with a passkey, a different provider hijacks the login and offers to take care of things for you. And sometimes you can't even tell which provider has hijacked things for you.

The biggest problem is that even when you have a passkey you need to set up a password first. And you have to have a recovery mechanism because you're going to forget your password. So adding a passkey, right now, makes you less secure, not more.

  • My stackable Phase Connect plushies arrived, after spending 17 months in Production Hell and another month stuck in the Canada Post parking lot.

Most of them. I think there's one set yet to ship.

  • I'm rich and have no idea what to do with my life. (Vinay)

Evening and morning to all you early risers, late toilers, and anticipators of the weekend! I got back to work yesterday, and it was indeed as scaly as I expected. Meghan Markle’s New Netflix Show Promises Cooking Tips, Privacy, and… a Shower Scene?

In a bold move to rebrand her “We Want Privacy” world tour, Meghan Markle has dropped the trailer for her latest Netflix series, With Love, Meghan. The eight-episode cooking show reportedly features glamorous Hollywood friends, authentic bee-keeping (in a rented garden), and, according to the rumour mill, a surprise shower scene. Nothing says “relatable” quite like elevating the ordinary while fully glammed up in a steaming bathroom.

In this case it only reduced the number of death row inmates by 10% and he claims that they reviewed all the cases and felt they were appropriate in these cases.

I prefer the Texas approach where the Governor can only pardon/commute sentences if that action has been approved by a board. Makes it so one person can't unilaterally decide to do whatever they want.

It's false though. It is like making a mockery of piety. It rings hollow because they have all the sympathy in the world for the killers and make a show of that sympathy by rending their garments and tearing their hair, meanwhile they spit in the face of the victims.

One of the only true functions of government is to be able to give impartial justice to people who have been wronged. This protects society while preventing mob justice and vigilantism. Instead, they wound the victims yet again by extending their empathy to the people who are destructive of society and the common good- and the individual. And it is all for show. 'Look at how decent and fundamentally good I am!'

What the f*ck does being gay have to do with this?

119 I had a good natter with a publican in Ireland. Old businesses, especially pubs and restaurants, are closing up everywhere you look, because they simply can't afford to stay open. They have "bank holidays" every other day, and they have to pay anyone double time, which is double an already massive paycheck, and there's no hope of doing enough business to even pay the staff let alone turn a profit. So they just close on holidays now. Which means less business. Which means more pressure to simply close up altogether. I told him that line that the minimum wage is always Zero. He liked that one.

144 3D displays without glasses have been around for decades. They just have one problem: only one person can use it at the time because head tracking is needed to make it work. This was fine in a handheld device like the Nintendo 3DS but a bit different for a large gaming screen. I've lost count of the number of times I saw these demoed at CES and E3 since the 90s. It works great until two people come close enough to confuse the head tracking.

185 “We need to overcome an addiction to divisiveness and negativity… & accept people’s imperfections and differences”??!!!

Progressivism is a disease that makes murder and death a necessary occurrence you need to learn to deal with.

See every communist regime for last 100 years.

191 I'm done, think I'll take a little walk in the woods, perhaps find a couple ruffed grouse with suicidal tendencies. Actually, 4 would make a fine feast for 2 people, with sausage stuffing, green beans, mashed and a half gallon or so of some of the better gravy you'll ever taste. For dessert some Stewart's Philly Vanilla alongside the Cherry pie I did yesterday. So if you'll excuse me, I shall attempt to turn fantasy into reality.

Have an excellent day, good people.

"Queer people". Like it's not enough to be SSA and live a quiet, normal life (or at least "normal" in SSA sense). No, you gotta act out, fly your freak, be offensive, be obnoxious and demand everyone applaud you.

202 144 3D displays without glasses have been around for decades.

Granted, the original Nintendo 3DS had you looking front at the screen, no head tracking, but still with the 3D effect. Given the use case of the handheld (held in hands in front of face), this was doable. The upgraded "New 3DS" incorporated a front camera with head tracking to improve the 3D display and viewing angles.

The original was released in 2011. New 3DS in 2014-2015. The technology could have come far in a decade.

The actual question is whether it'll actually be in demand. or just a stupid gimick, as Alucard the Abridged has stated elsewhere.
