Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: A Criminal Conviction and a Reminder - There Are College Students from China Spying on U.S. Defense Facilities
When the FBI seized the drone and pulled the photos off its memory card, they discovered images that special agent Shalowitz said she recognized as being taken at Newport News Shipyard and BAE Systems, which is a 45-minute drive away. The affidavit states that on the day Shi took the photos, the Newport News Shipyard was “actively manufacturing” aircraft carriers and Virginia class nuclear submarines. “Naval aircraft carriers have classified and sensitive systems throughout the carriers,” the affidavit states. “The nuclear submarines present on that date also have highly classified and sensitive Navy Nuclear Propulsion Information (‘NNPI’ and those submarines even in the design and construction phase are sensitive and classified.”Mr. Shi was charged with multiple criminal misdemeanors in violation of the Espionage Act, including the prohibited filming of a military installation, as well as the prohibited use of aircraft to criminally spy on U.S. military facilities. He subsequently pled guilty to several espionage charges. There’s much more that I am getting to, but how is espionage by a foreign national on U.S. soil only a misdemeanor? In October of this year, Fengyun Shi was sentenced to six months in prison. This October article from the Minneapolis Star Tribune reveals some more information about Mr. Shi that is very troubling…. Mr. Shi bought the drone on January 3, then flew from San Francisco to Norfolk the next day. On January 5 he flew the drone over the BAE shipyard, before heading down to Newport News on January 6, the day his drone got stuck in a tree while photographing the naval shipyard. After he fled from the scene of his snagged drone, he returned to the Bay area in California, where he was arrested on January 18 ”…before he could board a one-way flight to China.” If all this isn’t crazy enough, at his sentencing in October in U.S. District Court, Fengyun Shi “was also ordered to be on court supervision for one year after his release as part of his sentence under a World War II-era statute that is part of the Espionage Act.” Why is this convicted spy, who is a Chinese citizen, going to be released into the United States “on court supervision” after his release from federal prison for spying on the Unites States of America?! In what inverted world is this happening? Coincidentally, the Wall Street Journal reported this story about drones swarming around Virginia military facilities in October of 2024: “Mystery Drones Swarmed a U.S. Military Base for 17 Days. The Pentagon Is Stumped. U.S. officials don’t know who is behind the drones that have flown unhindered over sensitive national-security sites—or how to stop them” [WSJ – 10/12/2024] The drones headed south, across Chesapeake Bay, toward Norfolk, Va., and over an area that includes the home base for the Navy’s SEAL Team Six and Naval Station Norfolk, the world’s largest naval port.If we don’t want Chinese spies doing surveillance work around U.S. military installations, a blindingly obvious way to stop it is to not allow Chinese spies into our country under cover of student visas or work visas. Daniel Horowitz noted in a series of tweets that over the past two decades the number of foreign students in America has nearly tripled, to 1.5 million, of which over 330,000 are from China. He added, “The notion that we'd have hundreds of thousands of foreign students from a country we are essentially at war with is insane, especially after espionage and trade theft run rampant.”

State Department documents reveal secret plans to route ‘censorship’ office to new hub
The Global Engagement Center, the office that Republicans accused of working with groups aiming to demonetize right-leaning media outlets in the United States, shut down in late 2024 upon lawmakers agreeing to no longer fund it. However, in a non-public letter to members of Congress on Dec. 6, the State Department outlined its plans to “realign” more than 50 GEC officials and tens of millions of dollars in funding to a hub purporting to counter foreign interference, documents show. The plans, which have not been reported on until now, will likely lead to investigations from Republicans into the State Department’s handling of the GEC’s closure. I'm of two minds when it comes to drone stories like this. Yes, we are being spied on by agents of foreign countries (and enemies) that we suicideally let into our country. And we don't do much about it.
On the other hand, the recent fixation on drones seems calculated to set the stage for ... wait for it ... heavy gov't regulation of drones and their owners. I'm not sure which is worse: Chinese kids with drones spying for China, or the venal US bureaucrats and feral deep state in charge of all drones (and their owners). I was left a message that my order could not be processed, called them back, GAVE them the ph#s and website of the company they had to deal with (ins intermediary). A week later, get a call again that my order could not be processed. Call them back, they can't get ins authorization, so I ask for my account # with them, contact the ins intermediary MYSELF, get issue resolved. So no messages from supplies company, my supplies are running low (as in a week+ left), get message that they won't ship the supplies until Jan 12th. Call them up, get frustrated with auto system that won't let me talk to a live person, but somehow, after calling a few #s, get a live one, who tells me shipment is delayed because they haven't received some document from the doctor's office. I'm getting really, really pissed now. Ask for ph#s to call them with info, called my doc office, give info, asked for alternative supplies as I'm running out. What a shitty situation, literally. Fun fact: all drones, including ones used by our military, are made in China. This is due to FAA regulations requiring that any US-based manufacturer would have to have a way for the drone to validate the operator as a licensed airline pilot. The regulations specifically say the government will come down with the full force of the Democratic National Committee and the MSM on the manufacturer, not the operator.

Anna Matson @AnnaRMatson My heart absolutely breaks over this. Michigan will cut down 400 acres of beautiful forest for solar farm. The DNR says this is to make up for decreasing revenue from hunting and fishing licenses and to work toward the 100% clean energy goal. Notice something? Posted by: Emmie at January 03, 2025 11:52 AM (Sf2cq) Yeah, this is incredibly frustrating to me. A LOT of Americans go in to STEM. Or at least start in STEM, then realize that there are very few high paying jobs at the end of that rainbow, and the competition is incredibly tough because the HR managers are the big tech companies are mostly Indian or Asian and are going to give massive hiring preferences to other Indians or Asians. So it doesn't make financial sense to work your ass off for 4 years for an undergrad degree, 1-2 years for a master, have six figures in debt, and still likely not be able to find a job. You want more Americans in STEM? Stop importing people from the third world with their most-likely-bullshit degrees to do those jobs. Also, let's be real -- the vast majority of the jobs we're talking about don't require a person to be brilliant. I would wager that the public schools in the suburbs in the US are most likely among the best schools in the world. Yes, our inner city schools are destroyed and horrible. But we only have the Chinese communist government's word that their students score better on standardized tests than Americans do. And we're also hardly comparing apples to apples. And in my experience with the "best of the best" from China, they're nothing special and they cheat rampantly, almost openly on every test they take. It's an accepted part of the culture in most of the world. You do whatever it takes to get ahead. If I tell someone then I have to do it, right? I'm interested in the origins of globalism, though I realize they may predate this book, but I also find Kissinger interesting and wonder what his role was in globalism.
