Sometimes it's hard to be sure particularly when dealing with 95-year-old material where everyone directly involved is probably dead.

But entering the public domain this year - yesterday - is A Farewell to Arms, The Sound and the Fury, The Maltese Falcon, Is Sex Necessary by James Thurber and E. B. White, Alfred Hitchcock's first sound film Blackmail, and The Cocoanuts, the first feature film by the Marx Brothers.

Also the characters - though not the stories - of Popeye and Tintin, the first speaking roles of Mickey Mouse, Singin' in the Rain, Ain't Misbehavin', and Ravel's Bolero.

Tech News

CES is almost here so all the hardware news is waiting until then. So until next week it's mostly leaks of varying veracity.

14 From my vast expertise born of watching a handful of YouTubers, OR and WA, along with some fedgov characters, are finally starting to understand how disastrous their policy of "extinguish every fire and leave all forests untouched" has been, and they're doing incentive programs for land owners to start turning the tide by cleaning up all the brush and junk on the lower level of the forest. That brush accumulates when you're both not managing the land yourself while also stopping small, natural, periodic fires to come through and do it for you. Then, when a fire inevitably does come along, it rages out of control and kills everything, not just a thin layer of debris. Fires are good for forests.

Demure little Margo has jumped from 62. to 6.4 pounds in the last two weeks.

At almost 7 months old, I suspect that she and her twin sister shall remain demure and petite.

And their car journeys up to B'more and back went absolutely fantastic. Once we got rolling, Mrs VIA was able to let them out of their carriers, and they both promptly fell asleep curled up against and on Mrs VIA. And the best part was that while they traveled in two carriers, seriously complicating the logistics of the back of the wagon, they decided that they preferred to travel in a single carrier.

That in itself massively changes the dynamics of the back of the wagon.
But either way, we asked a lot of them these last three weeks, and they did outstanding.

Thanks, VIA! I'm here in my office. I dreamed about it last night. Seems I was here at something like 1 am, and decided to go upstairs to nap in some kind of lounge that the building in truth does not have. I set the A/C and humidity controls (which again I don't have here), grabbed a blanket, and stretched out on a long couich. But there were two doors to the hall. I forgot to bolt either one. So people were coming in and going out all the time, and none of them seemed to think it odd that I was there at an ungodly hour and trying to sleep on a couch.

No deducting here, but I do keep a log book of each year's gas, repair, and maintenance costs. (I never add them up after the year is over; I like my hair to stay dark, thank you.) Yesterday I put a new book in the glove box, moved last year's to the backup for reference, and brought the 2023 book into the house to store.
