53 Willowed from disaster thread:

I grew up in upstate SC, which may be one of the least disaster-prone parts of the continent. Far enough west and north for a hurricane buffer (recent anomaly notwithstanding) far enough east that tornados played out. Far enough south for blizzard-free winters. Some swampy areas but no major rivers to cause widespread flooding. Minor fault line nearby but can't recall a tremor. Farmland all around provides ample fire breaks, helped by sensible, private property management. I remember some dry spells but not what you'd call dust bowls. Zero volcanoes so far.

I watch anime almost exclusively (done with woke American TV), and this was like nothing I'd seen before. I got the impression they were actually trying to tackle the problem of a character who sincerely loves the female protagonist but is too focused on trying to control the outcome, possibly due to enduring some past abuse. The show goes to great lengths to portray the female lead as inexperienced and naive, and lets a lot of things slide that a more emotionally developed girl would not. But it's not your typical "nice girl falls for the bad boy" storyline. I didn't finish the show, it was just not for me. But maybe I'll give it a second try and see if they went somewhere interesting with it.

You inadvertently installed an earworm in my head last night. There was a video of a guy playing banjo for a fox, I commented that he should have been playing 'Fox on the Run'. Then, later in the thread you made, I think, a Donovanian comment, 'Yellow is the color of my true love's hair'.

Well, I flashed back to my comment about 'Fox on the Run', popped over to youtube to give it a listen. Finally flushed it out of my head this aternoon.

278 "Rasputin did it in The King's Man. (Very underrated action comedy prequel.)"

Ace, I agree. The King's Man is probably the best movie out of that entire series, in fact. Better even than the first one.

280 There is one additional reason for this nonsense .. it is to show that Russia (or China) can't just go and take anything it wants.

It works like this ..
1) Trump says he wants the Panama Canal and Greenland
2) international community (including China, Russia, Iran, etc) says "you can't do that"
3) Trump says "yeah, you're right .. you just can't take things"
4) turns to Russia and say "see Vlad, it's a non-starter" .. there is a consensus.

Repeat for China wanting Taiwan

282 Observations from NoHo SoCal @ 1920...

New fire reported in the canyons above Altadena SoCal.

Eaton Canyon, no crews on scene as of yet. Looks to be about 20 acres and growing..

283 Trump says he wants the Panama Canal and Greenland
Just because it appears to be less than serious doesn't mean he isn't serious.
We are talking about negotiations, not something totally sane.
First rule of understanding Trump ... everything is a negotiation.

285 Unless you understand historical "Fire Ecology & Management" you should not make pathetic statements that are an afront to the decades of research that have gone in to understanding the positive elements of fire upon the landscape as a restorative element to the survival of regional ecosystems. This is not about "Insurance Rates" but more about the urban/wildland interface in which Liberal/Leftist moneyed people want to live in bucolic natural Homescapes up in the hills of SoCal without thinking about what this might entail. Today though in SoCal, these fires are not an origin of nature but a result of homeless/arsonist/meth-addict interface which is rampant in this state currently.
