There were a couple of stories today about the Chinese building what were called "Mulberries", after the portable harbors we built for D-Day. As far as I can tell, though, they are basically LSTs with long, extensible ramps. The idea is that they would open up more beaches on Taiwan for invasion, given that the very small number currently suitable for a landing are very heavily defended. This seems like a complex and fragile solution to a problem which cannot now be overcome, and will likely result in huge numbers of PRC casualties.

Posted by: runner at January 13, 2025 07:49 Told this story before here. At the local dog park, someone had a full grown Timber wolf. It was huge and majestic and simply glided when it walk. It was very deceptive because it would cover lots of ground and you wouldn't know it. It was by the gate and the next moment it was at the far end of the park, about 100 yards away. The only way you could judge his speed was how fast the dogs were running to keep up. Eventually, the city told him he couldn't use the park. Dicks. Newsom has said he did not have an easy childhood, partly due to "pretty severe" dyslexia. He attended kindergarten and first grade at École Notre Dame Des Victoires, a French-American bilingual Catholic school in San Francisco, but eventually transferred out, due to the severe dyslexia that still affects him. It has challenged his abilities to write, spell, read, and work with numbers. Throughout his schooling, Newsom had to rely on a combination of audiobooks, digests, and informal verbal instruction. To this day, he prefers to interpret documents and reports through audio. You may now continue.

While it's sad that anyone should lose their home and all the possessions inside, whether to fire, tornado, flood, or hurricane, I'm a little sick of hearing about the Pacific Palisades as just a wonderful family neighborhood full of multi-generation homes, and how just plain middle class they are.
They are not, on average, one-percenters. They've not the kind of wealth or income, but they are clearly above two-percenters. Let's call them one-point-five percenters, because looking at wealth and income across the U.S., that number is exactly right. But they seem to be on track for far more aid than those that lost all in the hurricane Milton disaster, and I don't recall Biden promising the kind of federal dollars to those in places like Blowing Rock, North Carolina. The news has lots of interviews with Palisades residents who say they have generational roots there and will certainly rebuild. But look at the arial photos, the lot sizes, most the houses wall to wall on small lots. Imagine the construction hassle of a rebuild that results in a single family house on every one of those lots, and what life will be like for those years of such hassle. I'll bet many will leave. I have started to talk to them gently, explain they are on an auto-call system, that if they were promised hot leads and easy cash, they are pretty much calling the same number 15 other agents called, and that I really hope they can find another job because cold-call sales really bite. It was from the Santa Monica Observer, quoting a tweet, the tweet was retracted, and the Oregon State Fire Marshall put out an official statement that the crews were scheduled to stop at Sacramento over night and all CA did was to perform safety checks on the equipment - no trucks were rejected
Now, I have no idea if the safety checks included emissions testing because the language is pretty vague . . . Posted by: Kindltot at January 13, 2025 09:09 PM (D7oie) Thanks, kindltot. I just saw the Oregon State Firechief's remarks that- Yes, they did have to go thru some safety checks, but no, there were no smog/emissions tests on the trucks. So maybe the emissions part is just some propaganda in attempt to get in control of the narrative that the hard left has been losing. Posted by: Rex B at January 13, 2025 09:19 PM (LS72h) 204

Demographic collapse hurts the PLA and PLAN, and makes waiting a problem..
Time is not on China's side, as Taiwan is getting effective at arming up. The Belt and Roads Initiative is Imperial Overstretch for China, and getting worse. Posted by: NaCly Dog at January 13, 2025 08:29 PM (u82oZ) --- Obligatory: Read Walls of Men. Before the US invaded France or the better-defended islands, it had centuries of maritime experience, including the fabled shores of Tripoli, but also landing forces against the Confederacy, etc. PLAN has no maritime tradition, and is under the twin constraints of Communist ideological loyalty as well as the need to "save face," so their exercises are likely to be highly scripted. In order to land on Taiwan, a joint force command would have to be set up. Whoever leads that force would be the de facto ruler of China if he chose. The person selected would therefore be completely compliant, and may have a divided command to reduce the internal threat. My understanding is that late spring is the best weather for invasion, so that window was probably best last year, with Biden's faltering hand at the helm of a demoralized and undermanned military. The PLA is divided into four regional commands, and each is fully independent of the other, including recruiting intake, training, etc.
In addition, there is an internal security force created after PLA troops mutinied (refused orders) in 1989. China's primary enemy is internal. A failed invasion could spark a rebellion, since there is no source of legitimacy in China other than military power. A failed campaign is a classic cause of dynastic collapse. Xi has destroyed his rivals, but also his successors, so the field is wide open to the ambitious. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at January 13, 2025 09:41 PM (ZOv7s) 268

Posted by: Anna Puma at January 13, 2025 09:44 PM (eEdHS) --- No, they have a separate command authority. China is very much about that sort of thing. The 1911 revolution happened because the Yuan Shih-kai demanded full command authority from the Ch'ing Dynasty in order to put it down, and then deposed them when he got it. He resolved to take the throne after the Republic failed to produce viable leaders, but died in 1916, and the "Warlord Era" was about his subordinates fighting it out amongst themselves. 124 Vice grips?
Posted by: Boss Moss at January 13, 2025 08:43 PM (YeGMU) One of the mysteries of life is that vice grips are never the right tool for the job, but sometimes are the only tool that will work. That's probably not the case here, however. Posted by: Wilson at January 13, 2025 09:51 PM (Yt3ED) 286

I have no problem with renaming ships that are still on paper.
Truthfully Doris Miller should get an Arleigh Burke. Mess attendant, prize fighter, he was tasked to help his ship's wounded captain get evacuated, but the man stayed at his post commanding. So, Doris Miller took charge of a machine gun and according to one eyewitness was enjoying himself shooting at the Japanese. So, Admiral Nimitz personally presented Miller with the Silver Star.
