As far as I can tell, though, they are basically LSTs with long, extensible ramps. The idea is that they would open up more beaches on Taiwan for invasion, given that the very small number currently suitable for a landing are very heavily defended. This seems like a complex and fragile solution to a problem which cannot now be overcome, and will likely result in huge numbers of PRC casualties.

Just ran Stellarium zoomed way in. It has the moment Mars contacts the Moon here at 9:09:08 PM EST.

There's a lot of fuzziness at that resoltion due to atmospheric effects and errors in exact position and all that, so nowhere near one second of time resolution, a full minute or better is more like it.

Told this story before here. At the local dog park, someone had a full grown Timber wolf. It was huge and majestic and simply glided when it walk. It was very deceptive because it would cover lots of ground and you wouldn't know it. It was by the gate and the next moment it was at the far end of the park, about 100 yards away. The only way you could judge his speed was how fast the dogs were running to keep up.

Eventually, the city told him he couldn't use the park. Dicks.

Astronomers like it when things pass in front of things or behind them. There are some useful measurements you can take at the point of touching that can tell you if one or the other has an atmosphere and such.

Agreed. Even when the PRC blankets the coasts with missiles and has absolute air supremacy, a single missile can take out the ships. The Taiwanese have lots of missiles. For that matter, there is no way to disguise the preparations for such a monumental undertaking. The Taiwanese would start sinking PRC shipping before it left port.

The news has lots of interviews with Palisades residents who say they have generational roots there and will certainly rebuild. But look at the arial photos, the lot sizes, most the houses wall to wall on small lots. Imagine the construction hassle of a rebuild that results in a single family house on every one of those lots, and what life will be like for those years of such hassle.

I'll bet many will leave.

To the resolution of my shakiness with the binoculars, Mars disappeared behind the lunar limb at a smidge past 9:08 PM.

Right before, it was cool, a contrail passed right in front of the Moon about 2 minutes before. That would have made a nice photo...

Thanks, kindltot. I just saw the Oregon State Firechief's remarks that- Yes, they did have to go thru some safety checks, but no, there were no smog/emissions tests on the trucks.

So maybe the emissions part is just some propaganda in attempt to get in control of the narrative that the hard left has been losing.

No, they have a separate command authority. China is very much about that sort of thing. The 1911 revolution happened because the Yuan Shih-kai demanded full command authority from the Ch'ing Dynasty in order to put it down, and then deposed them when he got it. He resolved to take the throne after the Republic failed to produce viable leaders, but died in 1916, and the "Warlord Era" was about his subordinates fighting it out amongst themselves.

So this is very much a fear.

One element no one discusses is Japan's excellent submarine fleet. Diesel electric, arguably the best in the world.

Navy Cross. I agree naming a capital ship after him is not warranted, but George Floyd. Carriers should be named for Jimmy Thach and some other WW2 combat Naval Aviators, but that will never happen.
