In other hobby news, my father gave me all his N-scale RR stuff, including a modest layout. To my delight, there are N-scale tanks and APCs out there, so since his stuff is from the 1970s, I thinking of doing T-62 vs M-60 retro combat.

I told him the layout could use some pillboxes and shell holes. he was amused.

That squirrel learned to purr, and sounded just like a cat.

Also, buy 3 decks of playing cards (hence the shoe).

One of the great disappointments of my military careers was failing to the get the ANG to buy a baccarat shoe. Had to do it out of my own pocket.

Worth every penny though. When DVs came to the wargaming cells and saw that shoe and Jack Daniels playing cards, they were instantly interested.

In one memorable incident, the commander tried to push through it but the two-star said simply: "Deal me in."

One of the great disappointments of my military careers was failing to the get the ANG to buy a baccarat shoe. Had to do it out of my own pocket.

Worth every penny though. When DVs came to the wargaming cells and saw that shoe and Jack Daniels playing cards, they were instantly interested.

Get a layout going. Even a simple 4 X 8 layout will get fun going! Parlor trick. You get about 100 tiny over the counter drones made of plastic that don't show up on radar. You put LED lights on each and synch them to a relay board that controls the LED's. Then you line them up and light up one of the ends....and then light up each in turn while extinguishing the light of each subsequent drone until you reach the other end of the line of drones and keep the LED on....on that one. Amazing, that UFO traveled faster than anything I've ever seen. Presto...Walah...the trick she is done.

Part of it is that science has become so politicized that only "approved" theories gain any traction (like superstring theory and climate change). But I think there is still plenty of interesting science happening around us. Much of it may not have any practical use for decades, though (e.g., "quantum teleportation").

If I recall correctly, Season 5 was an after thought as everybody thought the show was cancelled after season 4. The series finale of Season 5 was shot AFTER season 4 and was supposed to shown then. BUT, season 5 was greenlighted and they scrambled for storylines. It was weird. I didn't hate season 5 but compared to the previous 4 seasons, it was lacking. Yes, B5 was criminally underrated.

Physics can never tell you the why or the reason. Why is their gravity? Why is there an electromagnetic force?

All it does is tell you "how" in the sense of what you will observe and measure.

In the process you create certain mathematical mental pictures (ie gravity is curvature of spacetime). But it's just that, a mathematical framework that predicts what will be observed.

There's no more reality to those mathematical models than anything.

The series finale of Season 5 was shot AFTER season 4 and was supposed to shown then. BUT, season 5 was greenlighted and they scrambled for storylines. It was weird. I didn't hate season 5 but compared to the previous 4 seasons, it was lacking. Yes, B5 was criminally underrated.

jms had always pitched the show for 5 seasons. When it looked like there would not be a fifth season, he worked to get the Shadow War and Earth Civil War plotlines finished by the end of S4, and filmed the final ep, "Sleeping in Light." Then S5 was greenlit. S5 was always going to be mostly what jms called "empire building" - the struggles to get the new Federation going. It was only disrupted by 3-4 episodes.

My first train set as a kid was American Flyer. Had two-rail track, not three, so looked more realistic. Motors were AC, and a stepping switch reversed the motor upon every stop. So if you stopped going forward, and wanted to resume going forward, you had to hit the controller once very briefly to step the reverse switch.

244 If I recall correctly, Season 5 was an after thought as everybody thought the show was cancelled after season 4. The series finale of Season 5 was shot AFTER season 4 and was supposed to shown then. BUT, season 5 was greenlighted and they scrambled for storylines. It was weird. I didn't hate season 5 but compared to the previous 4 seasons, it was lacking. Yes, B5 was criminally underrated.

B5 was an amazing Sc-fi, I was a die hard trekkie, but B5 blew it out of the water. If picard was in sheridan's shoes we would have been fucked. Sinclair and Sheridan had asteroid size balls that would have made Kirk proud. I thought B5 was probably the most realistic glimpse into the future. Better toys, people are still assholes. None of this pie in the sky federation shit.

My favorite show of all time (and some great novels, too).

Season 5 was definitely tacked on, but the episode "Day of the Dead" justified the entire season. Also, the post-series special "The Lost Tales" was one of the best episodes of TV I've ever seen (the story with Lochley, the demon and the priest).
