As someone who doesn’t watch cable or network anything (I read the news almost exclusively, to get a feel for the Approved party lines)
There aren’t any “mistakes” on CNN or anywhere else like that. If Jennings is on there and getting those points out there, somebody somewhere wants that to happen, guaranteed. Conversely, if someone says something they really don’t like they can have that person fired on the spot.
My favorite example was the FNG on a local station, his debut, and he was hot mic’d complaining about “this gay-ass shit”. LOL
The anchorette kept her cool, and just “Allrighty then, thank you, I think we’ll take a break right here!”

On what would have been my 26th anniversary (first one without her) I took the kids out and had a meal I would have had with my wife. Had a pic of her with us, drank a glass of wine in her stead. It was better than being alone.

The hospital 'pain doctor' came to my room telling (yelling at) me I didn't need that medication that was going to receive pain medication her way.
Called my doc and said they weren't giving me my pain meds. Shortly, a nurse came in with proper medication.

As a result doctors are afraid to prescribe what their patients actually need lest they be investigated.

He was a prior Drill Sergeant, and had all sorts of great stories. He claimed that he installed a bogus can of Saltpeter on a shelf locker in the mess hall, just visible so guys in the chow line could see it, stuff like that. He loved playing mind games with people. If he liked you, you were OK, and if he didn’t he would make you wish he did. He was a good leader albeit he didn’t seem to hooah about some things.

I get part of it. They were fixing the locations of previously unknown locations to the rest of the world. Longitude? They talked about having to be somewhere at Noon, or it wouldn’t work. Lewis’s chronometer stopped one day for no discernable reason, but started upnagain, and that horked the program (that day, or forever more??)
They also (sometimes) went to considerable effort to clear trees out so they could shoot bearings on stars or planets or something. Without an unobstructed view (or clouds) they had trouble.
I want to plug in some of their Lat Longs and camp exactly in some of their campsites this summer.

It's close enough to midnight to wrap up Dec.'s weather data. Even with the cold snap, the average temp for Dec here was almost dead on normal, 44F. Even the heating degree days were only a smidge above normal. While it got a lot colder then normal, it balanced it out with some well above normal temps.
The thing that stands out is the pressure. Had quite a swing, High of 30.71", low of 29.61", a swing of 1.1".

Yes, they would've been fixing longitude by high noon (solar transit) method. You have an accurate clock keep GMT time, and you know longitude by the time of your local high noon on the reference clock.
Now, shooting the sun directly was tricky, at least for high precision purposes, and there were all sort of astronomical proxies, including even the Moon you could use. Accurate ephemeris tables were vital to this.
If you lost your clock reference, you'd have to recalibrate using other astronomical observations, which were error prone.
These calculations and accurate observations are quite involved and tedious.

You can determine you latitude and local solar and sidereal time fairly easily by straightforward astronomical observations. One of my other cousins, whose been into astronomy since he was a kid, can eyeball sidereal time and, knowing the day of the year, solar time at night to 15 minutes just eyeballing the sky.
However, without ephemeris tables, calculating *when* some observable event will happen *relative to the prime meridian (or some other reference0)*, you are fucked about knowing longitude.

High noon is solar transit. When the sun crosses the local meridian. The sun's azimuth is exactly 180 degrees. Altitude varies, of course.
High is the highest altitude it will be for that day.
Apparent noon and mean noon are two different things. Basically, a fictional "mean sun" is constructed, think of it as a point moving along the celestial equator that averages out the variation in the motion of the sun over the tropical year.
This is what is used for "mean solar time". Apparent solar time is the hour angle of the true sun (plus 12). The "Equation of Time" is the difference between them, which varies over the tropical year.

Tater, you align a telescope or other other instrument along the N-S axis to very high precision. Same as with a sun dial.
You can then observe the transit to as a high a precision as the "fuzziness" of your methods allows.
That determines local solar time (you have to know the Equation of Time to correct to local mean time). Now, you know what the local time is. But you have no idea what time it is over the prime meridian, because you don't know your longitude.
Now, carrying an accurate chronometer tells you what time it is over the prime meridian. The difference tells your longitude.

Pain meds are administered for a lot of reasons. End of life is a subject unto itself. So is battlefield TCCC where we talk about things like the effects of morphine vs ketamine.
Pain meds after surgery or medical procedures are mostly what I am referring to.

Fortunately I live in an area with a good number of good restaurants, though more and more they're high end and overpriced rather than just good solid food at a (relatively reasonable price). Pubs should still do good fish & chips if you have one nearby. That makes me think of where I might get a good Irish stew.
By the way, thanks for all you do Ace. I've been coming here since 2003 or maybe 04, under a million nics. Let's hope 2025 has more posts about great things happening (and the wailing and gnashing of Leftist teeth) than we've been having.

Breaking in a new setup.
I've listen to Zappa since I got turned on to him in college. Played a couple of his tunes in a fusion band, consider myself fluent in Zapan but it seems I can always find something I've never heard before.

We have a chocolate store in downtown Mobile that has the old Woolworth counter in it. You can get hand scooped ice creams and amazing shakes there. The actual Woolworths is a few doors down and is a clothing store, I think, but the tile outside of the front door still says “Woolworth”. It’s pretty cool.

Tater, read up on the Airy transit circle at the Royal Observatory. Amazing precision they achieved, and it's quite interesting to read how they did it, and the meticulous set up required.
Tonight, as I was going on about the transit of Sirius marks local apparent midnight very close. IOW, High Dog Noon is Local Midnight on New Year's day.
What the clock time will be depends on your longitude, but this marks local midnight. Go out and look at Sirius. Now, face due South. Imagine a line going from due South over your head and going back down due North. That's your local meridian.
Now, sight Sirius relative to that. When it crosses, that's transit. And that's local midnight to less than 2 minutes.
That event is the local ball dropping for New Year's.

My 21 yr old niece had cancer all through her body for years and when they performed exploratory surgery for the last time, it was clear her case was terminal. She was in unbearable pain for weeks before the final surgery. After discussions with her Mom and Dad, the staff gave her near 200 mg of morphine. She was gone in minutes.
Thank God.

I think there was a Shakey's at one point up here in NorCal where I am now. But definitely they were down in SoCal. When I was a kid in L.A. I preferred Straw Hat to Shakey's.

I have had 10 new prospects today- it’s about to get crazy for me. I have decided this year to have everyone write their goals and we are going to put them on a few framed cork boards I bought. I am going to help develop plans for them in terms of class combos, etc. to meet the goals in a healthy, achievable way. Hope to get them past the second week of January at least!
