As someone who doesn’t watch cable or network anything (I read the news almost exclusively, to get a feel for the Approved party lines) There aren’t any “mistakes” on CNN or anywhere else like that. If Jennings is on there and getting those points out there, somebody somewhere wants that to happen, guaranteed. Conversely, if someone says something they really don’t like they can have that person fired on the spot. My favorite example was the FNG on a local station, his debut, and he was hot mic’d complaining about “this gay-ass shit”. There is a bumper (window) sticker that sums up many people’s opinion - “All Lives Splatter. Nobody Cares About Your Protest. Stay The Fuck Out Of The Road.”
Succinct and to the point. I’m not condoning it, but it is inevitable that bloodshed will occur, because, local authorities are not allowed to perform their sworn duty. Blocking roads and right of way and highways is illegal and not a valid form of protest. It is a form of insurrection. While I am loathe to give advice, it is probably (almost certainly) counterproductive. Posted by: Common Tater at December 31, 2024 08:08 PM (29nn/) 78

...as long as you kept your head down you were safe, mostly.
They sent us over the top earlier to pee outside and I could hear the shots fly inches from my head. Renny, the reindeer shaped kong toy didn't make it, a victim to the German lines, I still see his broken shape sinking into the mud. The commanders all say this war will last only a night, that tomorrow brings peace and an end to the terrible bombardment. However, now in the present, the shots increase in frequency and I sense a deadly crescendo building towards night's steep hour. I lay at hallways end, the house shakes, there will never be peace. -- Letters from banana Dream's dog, New Years 2025 Posted by: banana Dream at December 31, 2024 08:15 PM (Y6IkP) 93

Publius - could you maybe ‘splain a little bit about Lewis and Clark making “celestial observations” in 1804?
I get part of it. They were fixing the locations of previously unknown locations to the rest of the world. Longitude? They talked about having to be somewhere at Noon, or it wouldn’t work. Lewis’s chronometer stopped one day for no discernable reason, but started upnagain, and that horked the program (that day, or forever more??) They also (sometimes) went to considerable effort to clear trees out so they could shoot bearings on stars or planets or something. Without an unobstructed view (or clouds) they had trouble. Yes, they would've been fixing longitude by high noon (solar transit) method. You have an accurate clock keep GMT time, and you know longitude by the time of your local high noon on the reference clock. Now, shooting the sun directly was tricky, at least for high precision purposes, and there were all sort of astronomical proxies, including even the Moon you could use. Accurate ephemeris tables were vital to this. If you lost your clock reference, you'd have to recalibrate using other astronomical observations, which were error prone. These calculations and accurate observations are quite involved and tedious. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at December 31, 2024 08:54 PM (w6EFb) 197
162 Our UH60 maintenance Test pilot, a W4, always recommended what he called the “Epsom Salt Purge” after a 30 day field problem subsisting on MREs. Also known as “Meals Refusing to Excrete”, this was a common complaint.
He was a prior Drill Sergeant, and had all sorts of great stories. He claimed that he installed a bogus can of Saltpeter on a shelf locker in the mess hall, just visible so guys in the chow line could see it, stuff like that. He loved playing mind games with people. If he liked you, you were OK, and if he didn’t he would make you wish he did. He was a good leader albeit he didn’t seem to hooah about some things. You can determine you latitude and local solar and sidereal time fairly easily by straightforward astronomical observations. One of my other cousins, whose been into astronomy since he was a kid, can eyeball sidereal time and, knowing the day of the year, solar time at night to 15 minutes just eyeballing the sky. However, without ephemeris tables, calculating *when* some observable event will happen *relative to the prime meridian (or some other reference0)*, you are fucked about knowing longitude. Werner eagerly anticipates 2025, celebrating another year in which he evaded Krampus and began production on "Squatchmen: An Inevitable Tragedy Revealed." Commander Star Sprinkles sleeps, as all cats do, with purpose, and Wife Number Four - okay, okay, she insists I refer to her by name, so Lena Herzog is enjoying knocking back flutes of champagne with Werner. Unlike Ayn Rand, she has never once awakened me with a blade to my throat, demanding that I identify the central flaw of Marxism as concisely as possible. The Rand would not be happy until I asserted that Marx turned Hegelianism upside down, creating a form of pre-destination akin to Calvinism.
Lena and I are having a few people over to await the dawning of the New Year, and all is well so far. The only distressing element is this very animated person who is telling everyone that he is Paul Anka, and demanding to know where someone named "Joe" is. He is insisting that I tell the Ewok that he is all about integrity, and expressing a willingness to slice like a freakin' hammer. He asserts that all the guys should get shirts, and threatens to summon somebody named Vinnie Falcone. I do not know this man. >> How does one know locally when it is truly high noon, though?
High noon is solar transit. When the sun crosses the local meridian. The sun's azimuth is exactly 180 degrees. Altitude varies, of course. High is the highest altitude it will be for that day. Apparent noon and mean noon are two different things. Basically, a fictional "mean sun" is constructed, think of it as a point moving along the celestial equator that averages out the variation in the motion of the sun over the tropical year. This is what is used for "mean solar time". Apparent solar time is the hour angle of the true sun (plus 12). The "Equation of Time" is the difference between them, which varies over the tropical year. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at December 31, 2024 09:09 PM (w6EFb) 239

Tater, you align a telescope or other other instrument along the N-S axis to very high precision. Same as with a sun dial. You can then observe the transit to as a high a precision as the "fuzziness" of your methods allows. That determines local solar time (you have to know the Equation of Time to correct to local mean time). Now, you know what the local time is. But you have no idea what time it is over the prime meridian, because you don't know your longitude. Now, carrying an accurate chronometer tells you what time it is over the prime meridian. The difference tells your longitude. Tater, read up on the Airy transit circle at the Royal Observatory. Amazing precision they achieved, and it's quite interesting to read how they did it, and the meticulous set up required. Tonight, as I was going on about the transit of Sirius marks local apparent midnight very close. IOW, High Dog Noon is Local Midnight on New Year's day. What the clock time will be depends on your longitude, but this marks local midnight. Go out and look at Sirius. Now, face due South. Imagine a line going from due South over your head and going back down due North. That's your local meridian. Now, sight Sirius relative to that. When it crosses, that's transit. And that's local midnight to less than 2 minutes. That event is the local ball dropping for New Year's. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at December 31, 2024 09:45 PM (w6EFb) 360
