51 John French Sloan (August 2, 1871 – September 7, 1951) was an American painter and etcher. He is considered to be one of the founders of the Ashcan school of American art. He was also a member of the group known as The Eight. He is best known for his urban genre scenes and ability to capture the essence of neighborhood life in New York City, often observed through his Chelsea studio window.

70 Local Kiwanis sponsored the annual town carnival. As a young lad it was quite the event. One year my mom gave me money to buy candy apples for my two little brothers...which I promptly lost at the dice game. I went home with no money and no candy apples. Mother Meta promptly tanned my hide. Beat the gambling bug right out of me.

72 Actually, I don't think they are nuns.

Looks like long hair; brown 'habits'; no white head covering beneath the 'habit', leaving their necks exposed.

My guess is a sect that believes in dressing-down contrasted with the 'modern dress of the other female attendees; or farm family members in similar clothes.

No, they did. I remember being a kid in the 80s, riding my bike through the 50s subdivision of my grandparents. Even then, I could see the neighborhood as it must have been. Impossibly wide streets with big cars, kids in striped shirts and crew cuts. Impeccable lawns. Husband's and wives on porches waving as you passed. It was magical even then.

88 Smithsonian-

Best known for his sympathetic portrayal of urban life in New York in the early twentieth century, John Sloan began spending four months every summer in Santa Fe, New Mexico, starting in 1919. The southwest offered a fresh landscape and novel experiences that inspired a new body of work. Travelling Carnival, Santa Fe depicts a bustling microcosm not unlike the streets of New York. Instead of ethnic quarters teeming with new immigrants, however, Sloan shows the diverse inhabitants of a southwest gathering for an evening of fun. The carousel whirls with bob-haired flappers aboard while the Ferris wheel's lights glitter in the background above crowds of Native Americans, farmers, and townspeople.

Embarrassing story from six years ago: showed up for a red-eye flight from Las Vegas to Halifax, Nova Scotia to meet cousins and explore my paternal Scottish Highlander roots via Broad Cove on Cape Breton Island.

Passport book had expired, and had earlier gotten one of those Passport "cards" to enter Canada or Mexico -- and thought that was sufficient -- but you can only use them to enter by land or sea (NOT by air). So TSA said of course that I couldn't board my plane.

Got the next flight to Bangor, ME and drove several hours straight through to Halifax. Nothing but forests, and only saw a few big rig trucks driving the other direction. Was terrified during the night driving that I'd hit a moose (as I was speeding), but later realized they had chain-linked fences on both sides of the highway to prevent that.

329 This breakthrough could revolutionize the future of clean energy. Researchers in Japan made a groundbreaking discovery that could bring us closer to sustainable energy from nuclear fusion reactors, paving the way for longer-lasting, more efficient clean energy systems. In a recent study, the team developed protective coatings to enhance the durability of materials used in fusion reactors, addressing a key challenge: material degradation from extreme heat and corrosive liquid metal coolants. Fusion reactors, which mimic the sun's energy production process, hold huge potential as a limitless source of clean energy.
