  • Browser extension Honey, which promises to save you money on everything you buy online, appears to be a scam. (Lifehacker)

Honey claims to find you the best available discount codes for whatever you wish to buy. It doesn't. Honey makes deals with merchants to control the discount codes it provides so that you don't get the best one. Sometimes it finds nothing at all even when valid coupons exist.

It also appears to change the affiliate cookie in your browser so that if you follow a recommendation, Honey gets the cut rather than the person who recommended the product. It does this whether it finds a coupon for you or not.

Honey also offers the buyer a bonus where you receive part of that affiliate deal. In the example in the video you receive 2.5% of the affiliate payout, while Honey gets 97.5%, and the actual affiliate receives nothing at all.

Honey was bought by PayPal in 2020 for $4 billion.

  • Browser extension Pie may also be a scam. (YouTube)

Well, it's an ad blocker with a shopping extension that promises to pay you money, which seems deeply implausible. A good ad blocker blocks ads, leaving no money for anyone, least of all you.

48 Evening and morning to all the late toilers and early risers! 'Tis Freya's Day, a consummation devoutly to be wished, as it always is.

The Fisker sounded like it wasn't really bad, for (as MT pointed out) a "2003 car" without all the passive and active safety systems we find in all the new cars. Their "California Mode" of lowering all the windows except the windshield so you can blow the hot air out of the car -- I wish my car had that! (Not that my car's back window would retract.) And the long-term test car was a cool shade of blue. But yes, going near a car like that with money in hand would be crazy.

62 Planning to call the mechanic shop this morning to see if they can do my oil change today. Somehow, since this is the first day they're open since Christmas, I doubt it. The change can wait until Monday or Tuesday. But I need it done before I go back to work. No tire rotations at present. The best tires, Kellys bought in March of this year, are on the rear of the car, as they should be. The fronts, Continentals, have about 4 years/36K miles on them and were rotated until this year.

In January, I think the Buick is due for transmission fluid change and coolant too. It's been about 40K miles on the first and 18K on the second.

Vivaldi is close, but YouTube doesn't like them so you get warnings.

No.
Call, make sure you have a caller ID for that number. If I don't answer, leave a message with a number I can call back.

116 Jill Biden is so wealthy that she do much to help others ( How about the people affected by storms in NC and TN?!) she could also go talk to a caring priest to get some competent spiritual direction., but maybe that's what the trip to the Vatican will involve . Some people have very difficult circumstances and other people just decide to be angry because they don't feel appreciated enough. I think Jill is one of the latter.

118 The Junta gave California permission to require electric car purchases by 2035. Since Cali doesn't build power plants, and the Democrat party does not want voters to see the actual cost of mandates, the junta also gave $15 billion to PG&E for new power purchases to power cars.

128 89 So what is a good ad blocker? Brave browser?

I am tired of all the ads on my phone

Thanks.
Posted by: FenelonSpoke at December 27, 2024 06:47 AM (MQJVv)

Yes, Brave is great for smartphones and tablets as you don’t have to worry about installing browser extensions, it just automatically blocks ads for you.
Brave also allows you to set certain sites, like AoSHQ, if you want to support that site by allowing ads. I use Brave on my iPhone and iPad.

I haven’t tried the Brave browser on PC or laptop but it works the same.

On PC/Laptop I use a Firefox fork called Waterfox, and the uBlock Origin (ad blocker) extension along with Ghostery (which is much better at blocking cookies and tracking than ads).

130 Wasn't it just a month ago that another cable was cut, also by some dodgy ship that bore some other flag, but Russian sailors on it?

Posted by: Another Anon at December 27, 2024 09:02 AM (QNMaY)

131 Yes, Another Anon, it was a Chinese cargo ship that was believed to have drug its anchor across two cables and severed them. Didn't hear there were Russian sailors on board at the time.

It's what happens when you sabotage a Russian oil pipeline to Germany, kids. This is the unintended consequence that would have been obvious to anyone with a brain remnant, which of course NATO lacks. It's also the unintended consequence of a CIA putsch in Ukraine, and the expansion of NATO to Russia's borders. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!

The correct answer is "never" :-P

Hell, I still have PCs on Windows 7. The one Windows 10 machine is running the Win10 LTSC (Long Term Support) version, which at least alleviates some of Win10's more obnoxious behaviors. Win11 has nothing I need or want, and a whole hell of a lot that I do NOT want.
