14 Lovely. Just learned that when our church expansion is complete it will include a rose window depicting the nativity. It's a vintage window and the congregation will be able to relive the birth of Christ every day that we attend Mass or stop by to pray. Hopefully all will be completed late next year.

48 Google AI says:

Artists painted "Madonna and Child" frequently because it was a central theme in Christian art, representing the Virgin Mary and infant Jesus, and held immense religious significance for worshippers who saw Mary as a powerful intercessor to God, making the image a devotional focus for prayer and contemplation; this was especially prevalent during the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods where the cult of the Virgin Mary was highly revered.

65 No need to go into Raphael's talent with his use of brilliant color and realistic people. What strikes me is how his paintings tell a story or invites the viewer to invent their own scenarios. Each face is different as are the poses. There is movement inherent is how the people are placed and what they are doing. There is an element of how the scene began and where it is going.

Using one's skill to glorify God and illustrate the sacred mysteries has now sadly fallen beside the wayside. It's at best a niche, as we blind ourselves with secular pleasures, often totally at odd with the commandments of the faith.

Art was once a powerful tool for conversion, but now it seems more like an obstacle.

Clothing children was always something of a luxury. If it's warm enough, they run around and while we mock naked kids in the tropics, it suits them.

That stuck with us until not long ago, when kids wore knee pants because the cuffs got ruined and they grew so fast.

Here we are, awash with clothing and we dress like slobs.

Catholic tradition teaches that Mary felt no labor pains until she saw Jesus upon the cross. This then became part of her agony, which is why Catholics venerate her so much - imagine the pain of bearing the Son of Man, seeing his good works and then beholding his suffering. And yet She still shows mercy, praying for our salvation.

No wonder people devote their lives to contemplating this.

Palestinian media proud of murdering a Jew, but actively hide that the victim was an 83 year old woman

This morning in Herzliya., a Palestinian man stabbed an 83-year old woman, Ludmila Lipovsky, to death. She was waiting outside her assisted living facility for her daughter to take her to a doctor.

Palestinian media typically celebrates terror attacks, claiming that the victims are all soldiers. That is a little more difficult when the victim is an elderly lady stabbed multiple times.

So they do everything they can to hide that fact.

Hamas-linked Felesteen Online's headline is "A settler was killed in a heroic stabbing operation near Tel Aviv" calling the victim a "Zionist settler" and not mentioning that she is a woman.

Palestine Information Center mentions it was a woman, calling her a "settler."

Safa just says "Israeli woman," basing it on Israeli reports and avoiding saying her age.

The official Wafa news agency simply avoids mentioning the story altogether.

113 This is why I don't put much stock in the diplomatic overtures from Hamas after Trump's election. The sandmaggots elected Hamas for a reason. Killing Jews. And, prior to 10.07, there was widespread disapproval of Hamas in Gaza, because they hadn't made a significant successful attack on Jews in a long time.

Any peace agreement will be considered a betrayal of sandmaggotry, and immediately rejected by the populace.

One of the reasons the Holy Family is so prominent in Catholic (and Orthodox) art is that it represents a relatable conception of perfect love. Is there anything more touching than a mother and her child? Even if you don't have kids, holding a sleeping baby is just so soothing.

This gives us an understanding of the enormity of God's love and a feeling of His peace.

There is a myth in the Arab world that they've never been truly defeated, a belief sustained by the fact that a peace was imposed before Israel could take Cairo or Damascus.

What is going on now is that Israel is able to fight to the finish, a war of annihilation on par with World War II. The reality of their defeat by 'infidels' is world-challenging, and that is one reason why they are trying to wriggle off the hook.

176 165 Tubal, I am not Catholic-bashing. I am stating a point on which I strongly disagree with Catholic doctrine.

There are many things I admire about the traditional Roman Catholic Church (not its current woke version): its educational system, its art, architecture, and music.

But there are many aspects of its doctrine that I take serious exception to.

Yup. And I find the "traditional" menorah design to be ... less than ideal. You have to futz around with them just so in order to get everything to stay put, and the most mobile candle is the one in the middle, which you have to precariously wedge back into place which is tricky even if you don't have ham hands like me.

I much prefer alternate approaches that set the Shamash off to a side or out of line with the daily candles. Like this layout (though I don't especially like this design):

Go for it.

Your sole and exclusive ambition is the discovery of fact, or it isn't. If you're after fact as such - succeed or fail - then you can conduct scientific activities. If you're not after fact as such, you cannot.

So have whatever "perspective" you like. But if that perspective is not, in its entirety, "my perspective is the pursuit of objective fact as such, come what may after those facts are discovered" then just know that you are not engaging in a scientific endeavor.

188 I mean, there are also practical considerations here. The various miracles and apparitions, such as that at Fatima (70,000 witnesses) Guadalupe (which resulted in mass conversions) and the healing waters of Lourdes which now have 71 scientifically documented cures that are impossible to explain (there are more that fall within the envelope of the possible but are still remarkable).

The Rosary was chanted by the Christians at Lepanto and while hey, you win some, you lose some, Pope Pius V knew the moment the battle was decided, days before the news could reach Rome.

191 Our family was raised in accord with those values now derided and scorned. We have lived our lives by them with no apology to anyone.

Occasionally we've gotten shit about it, and it goes as far as me, then stops, because I don't tolerate it. Thankfully, there have only been a couple instances where it was necessary to demonstrate what is meant by non-toleration. They healed and hopefully benefitted by that demonstration in their futures.

I mention this because it is your right NOT to have to accept the abuse.
