Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - January 1, 2025 [TRex]

20241227-TRex crystal ball.jpg

"Its tough to make predictions, especially about the future." Yogi Berra

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.

This is the Wednesday night ONT.

***

This is the official Ace of Spades ONT 2025 Prediction Challenge.

Two quizzes are below. Look into your crystal ball and respond to one or both. One asks for predictions of numbers, prices, or amounts at the end of 2025. (The objective is to get closest, so over or under are OK. No Price is Right rules.) The other asks whether an event will or will not happen in 2025. If you are going to participate in one or both, please attempt all the questions. TRex is not going to dig through comments to pick out single question guesses.

TRex will keep track of submissions and judge them accordingly. The best will receive accolades in January 2026. Scoring and tie breakers will be determined by opaque, arbitrary and otherwise discretionary means. Yes, this means that participants must wait an entire YEAR for results, but think of the bragging rights! Remember: predictions are not what you WANT the result to be but rather what you think the result WILL be. Even if you have no idea, make some guesses and play along. It costs you nothing.

AoSHQ etiquette frowns on posting comments on old threads. Post here within 24 hours or send an email to the address below by Friday, January 3, 2025 at 6pm Eastern Time.

***

Predict what numbers these will be as of December 31, 2025 (numerical response):

1) Price of 9mm ammo per round (as determined by daily average best price on Black Basin, currently $0.13).

2) National average price per gallon of regular gasoline (as determined by AAA, currently $3.043)

3) S&P 500 level (as determined by S&P, Dec 31 2024 close was 5881.63)

4) Euro to Dollar Exchange Rate (midmarket rate at 4pm ET as determined by XE.com, currently 1.0356)

5) Price of a single 2X4X8 premium grade piece of lumber (reference is the price at the Home Depot nearest to TRex home, currently $3.85 each)

6) Starting MSRP price of the most base level Ford F150 pick up truck (as shown on Ford build configuration website, currently $38,710)

7) Price of Bitcoin in USD at 4pm ET on Dec 31 (as shown on Coinbase website, 93,444.11 was price on Dec 31, 2024)

8 ) Price of a share of Smith & Wesson stock at market close (Dec 31 2024 price was 10.11)

9) Price of a share of Telsa stock at market close (Dec 31 2024 price was 403.84)

10) Price of a share of Home Depot stock at market close (Dec 31 2024 price was 388.99)

Predict whether these events will happen by the end of 2025 (Yes or No response):

1) A federal decision to eliminate Daylight Savings Time and make Standard Time permanent is made (but not necessarily implemented yet).

2) At least one currently sitting US Supreme Court justice leaves the bench (not just announced but actually steps down).

3) Iran supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei leaves offices (by any means: death, retirement, coup, etc.) or announces he is stepping down.

4) Justin Trudeau steps down as Prime Minister of Canada (actually leaves office).

5) Substantially all of the JFK assassination files are declassified and files are released or in process of being released.

6) Most of the Epstein client list is released.

7) Most of the Diddy list is released.

8 ) SpaceX makes more than 18 Starship launches (defined as launches that clear the tower regardless of eventual success or failure).

9) A decision to remove federal funding for either NPR or PBS is made through legislation or through executive action (but not necessarily implemented yet).

10) RFK is confirmed as head of HHS and remains in office.

Submissions should look like this (random responses below for illustration purposes, not actual predictions):

1) Yes
2) No
3) No
4) Yes
5) Yes
6) No
7) No
8 ) Yes
9) Yes
10) Yes

Good luck!

Some choose to focus on Pasadena on the first day of the year for the Rose Parade or Rose Bow game. Those are nice, but the main events are clearly are the B2 flyovers (since this is a smart military blog). The Air Force brings two B2s from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri. The visit to Pasadena serves as a training exercise.

Typically, one bird flies over the parade and the other flies over the game. Before each, both circle above the Angeles National Forest just north of Los Angles and (mostly) out of sight. If you know where to look or you venture into the mountains, you get the rare sight of two B2s circulating together at low altitude in a racetrack pattern. For 2025, the Spirit of Missouri (callsign SPIRIT 25) did the parade and the Spirit of Nebraska (callsign SPIRIT22) did the game.

Photographer Mark Holtzman has made a specialty of getting shots above the festivities looking down. His Twitter handle is @westcoastaerial.

P'Nut, is that you? If you believe in squirrel reincarnation:

A photographer has described his shock after coming across a rare albino squirrel while getting ready for a golf lesson.

Albino squirrels are a one in 100,000 genetic occurrence and some reports claim there are about 50 in the United Kingdom.

The incredibly rare squirrel, which is a colour variant the Eastern Gray Squirrel, was photographed by a golfer on a golf course in between Colchester and Maldon.

In case you missed it: Oldest living survivor of Pearl Harbor attack dies at 105

Upton was the last remaining survivor of the USS Utah. After Uptons death, just 15 survivors of the Pearl Harbor attack are alive.

PIPERS, not PEPPERS.

***

Molly Hatchet for the big ONT finish:

Written correspondence can be sent to moronhobbies at protonmail dot com. Are you lurking? Come out and play. TRex confidently predicts that "Imagine" by John Lennon will never be played on an ONT hosted by TRex.

55 Flirtin' With Disaster was literally our theme song on one contract, for about the last year and a half. A big boss made the comment that we were flirting with disaster as we passed the 3 1/2 year point on a 2-year development contract. I edited the album cover to be appropriate to our team and posted it in our workspace.

(The contract wasn't mine. We were the test team for accepting what the other guys were doing. So it seemed appropriate to adopt that moniker.)

Ok I'm calling bullshit. As a 76 year old I was alive and in the Army at the time. I checked out of the Army in March of '72 in San Fransisco. I NEVER SAW AN ACTUAL HIPPIE. Those were a media invention. You are about as likely to see Beyonce, Taylor Swift or 50 Cent on the street today as you were to see an actual hippie back then. 182 Here's how she's Dejah is described in the book:

And the sight which met my eyes was that of a slender, girlish figure, similar in every detail to the earthly women of my past life... Her face was oval and beautiful in the extreme, her every feature was finely chiseled and exquisite, her eyes large and lustrous and her head surmounted by a mass of coal black, waving hair, caught loosely into a strange yet becoming coiffure. Her skin was of a light reddish copper color, against which the crimson glow of her cheeks and the ruby of her beautifully molded lips shone with a strangely enhancing effect. She was as destitute of clothes as the green Martians who accompanied her; indeed, save for her highly wrought ornaments she was entirely naked, nor could any apparel have enhanced the beauty of her perfect and symmetrical figure.

Lynn Collins played her in the recent-ish John Carter movie and apparently Traci Lords did in an earlier John Carter movie

183 Let's get this out of the way:

Day 8

Local animal control officials showed up at my door just as a big delivery truck arrived and began delivering today's gifts from my "true love."

I was given a stiff fine for running an unlicensed aviary, for the twenty-eight birds added to what remained of the previous days' gifts, when a large cattle truck pulled up and began off-loading dairy cows. Then a bus pulled up and eight plump Germanic milkmaids, each carrying a small stool and a wooden bucket, came into the crowded yard and began their work relieving the clamoring cattle.

The animal control officer completely lost his mind, wrote me a huge fine, threatened me with jail time if I didn't take care of these farm creatures, and said he was calling ICE about the milkmaids. Like it was my fault!

Another day, another pear tree. I dread tomorrow.

From that to James Gang to Deep Purple to those two magnificent solo efforts. What a discography for one so young. He's the one I always think 'What if?' Why? Because for the first time, combined Consumer and Business debt, is exceeded by combined Fed, State, and Local Gov debt... debt that is NOT controlled by interest rates, but by politics.

And as the Politicians have shown NO resolve to solve Public debt... we're boinked.

212 the cybertruck explosion and the New Orleans rampage are certainly two remarkable anecdotes to start the year if you spend your time preoccupied with the busted relationship Americans have with automobiles

Elon has posts on X about the Cybertruck. They have the "black box" and up until the actual explosion the readings are normal. This strongly implies the explosion was caused by the payload of the truck - not the truck itself. In other words it could just as well have been a gasoline powered vehicle, but the perps wanted to get a shot in on Elon and Trump at the same time.

The voters want more spending and less taxes. For years the GOP tried to get them to vote for less spending by promising less taxes but the Dems decided to try and raise spending without serious tax increases.

Where does the money come from then? Well...inflation. If there was an opposition party they'd have been running on this exact point for the last few years

And it really is that simple - every dollar fedgov spends is paid for by either

Inflation

If DJT can get the economy humming again, we may not see prices drop by much, but we will see more people working decent jobs, and being able to afford the goods offered for sale. The absolute value of the dollar matters less than "how many hours do I have to work to fill this grocery cart?"

249 The hippie ethos metastaczied and took over culture in 1969, even though Nixon, the ultimate anti-hippe, won.

Remember there was no Internet back then for normal people to yell "Bullshit!" at the Media.

I was in the army 67 to 69 and was in San Francisco in August 1968, TDY and saw many hippies in the Haight/Ashbury area. I even took some pictures of them with my Polaroid Swinger (all I had at the time). I was attending a seminar at Ampex in Redwood City and borrowed a car so I could visit San Francisco. I still have those black and white polaroid photos. My first exposure to long hair hippies.

Like... foreign Aid. Subsidies for Electric cars or solar panels... Corn subsidies to turn corn into ethanol... I can go on and on about government programs that are NOT helping the average American, but special interests.

Heck, we spend Billions of dollars a year, making sure that Government retirees, Military retirees, and those who are on Social Security, are not cheating on the taxes they should not be paying in the first place.

The army was making the transition from film to video for training and instruction purposes. Our facility purchased two machines. Ampex would pay for the seminar for one man for each machine purchased. The army paid for the airline tickets, and gave us each money for food and motel expenses. The San Francisco side trip was pretty cool. My first exposure to go-go dancers as well. I was 21 years old. *sigh*

314 Has the method and style of playing trumpets changed over the years? The seven years I played, the trumpet was upright, the three valves in the middle. But looking at Williams' orchestra, the trumpets were sideways, but the valves were straight up. Since the whole trumpet section was playing these weird instruments, I assume that is the current style. Frankly, these new instruments look horrible. Makes them look like a pack of sissies.

General Mike Flynn @GenFlynn

There is too much work to do. Fly Trump Force 1 into WDC (land at Andrews AFB). Take the oath of office onboard TF1. Land at 1200 hrs on the 20th, then fly Marine One (helo) from Andrews right to the front lawn of the White House and take charge of the nation. We need to get to work. Have all the galas you want once we’ve gotten rid of all the illegals, gotten our economy back on track, achieved peace in the Middle East and made Europe take care of their own defense instead of it all being done by the U.S. and hold at least the 51 signers of the Hunter Biden letter accountable (all of them). These and a few other minor tasks must be accomplished before we start blowing horns and partying all night long.

346 Werner is amused to see that some of his test footage from his upcoming documentary "Squatchmen: An Inevitable Tragedy Revealed" somehow leaked out and were posted here. The night-vision images still need a bit of work, but the Ewok and Wookie costumes have good definition.

"Squatchmen" is rooted in the recent tragedy of the two Bigfoot enthusiasts who perished from exposure during an ill-planned Sasquatch hunt. It is the spiritual sequel of "Grizzly Man", with twice the amount of poor judgement and five times the amount of gullibility. It shall be dedicated to the happy memory that Werner has never dedicated any of his work to Klaus Kinski. A blessed New Year to all of you, and may Kathleen Kennedy never come within a fifty-mile diameter of your favorite TV and film properties. Werner now turns to his yearly tradition of calling Lorne Michaels and threatening him that I have someone with actual comedic talent and wit who aspires to a role on SNL. This chills him to his very core, as Lorne has spent fifty years leeching away all of the same from his productions. For extra spookiness, I shall be doing my Norm Macdonald impression. Auf Wiedersehen!

I'm in Prescott, AZ, and had this issue about a year ago on my 2007 Prius. Clockspring was failing on attempting to set my cruise control -- which I need as I dirve 85,000 miles for work.

Found a thread at the Prius Chat Forum where one member was able to turn his steering wheel completely to the full clockwise position -- which allowed pushing the cruise control button to work.

Utilized this for several months (having to pull over off the road to do the deed) before it no longer worked and had to finally have it replaced.

386 I hung one piece of sheetrock on the high wall of the front room today. Being as I am allergic to falling off the ladder onto a concrete floor, I made an "anti-kick-out-the jams" stick. Piece of plywood attached to a length of 2X3 so that with the ladder propped against the wall, the stick can be placed between the base of the ladder and the opposite wall to preclude the possibility of the base of the ladder slipping outward from the base of the wall, and dropping me, the occupant, onto the unyielding concrete floor.

I doubt it really does much, but it inspires confidence.

Yes and yes! The ones about insects she read the heck out of and then set them on Lil Pooky's bookshelf, because she thinks he'll love them (he was one month old at the time, but it was sweet nonetheless). The Ninjago ones helped fill in the background of the movie, which was good, because none of us had seen the show.

389 I'm in Prescott, AZ, and had this issue about a year ago on my 2007 Prius.

Prescott! We will have to do a meet-up! Osprey got the part from Amazon for 40 dollars, and we verified that the fault was NOT the horn switch itself before opening the package. He bought me dinner, which was a fair trade. We had a youtube video as a guide, which was very welcome. Some of the steps are not intuitively obvious.

Some bands are better live than the studio version. Some bands are 'sloppy' live, for want of a better musical term. I've seen both. But the country rock bands always seem to be there on the 'good live' rankings. I've even seen Black Oak Arksansas twice as a kid, and they put on a high-energy show. Nothing sloppy about it. Much better than studio.

Friend in high school didn't care for Rod Stewart much until he saw him live (while on a date). Became a fan.

I enjoyed watchng Nils Lofgren do his 'off the angled trampoline' summersault while playing guitar. That was pretty high-energy. And surprising.

398 Popping in late on the topic... Am a San Francisco native relocated to the East Coast 20 years ago. Nobody out here believes in hippies either. Yeah, there were hippies in SF in late '60s, early '70s! Wonderful music and clothes. My friends and I were so young that we had to rely on our older siblings to take us to the places where hippies hung out - Golden Gate Park, nearby Haight Ashbury, the beach, the wharf. It seems that some of my favorite music did not travel to the East Coast. If you want a little change of pace, look on YouTube for Bombay Calling by It’s a Beautiful Day or Gold and Silver by Quicksilver Messenger Service.

The rotary valve trumpet, widely used in German-speaking areas, is characterized by its mechanically complex rotary valves and its horizontal holding position. 501 Happy New Year Hordlings! All is well here in Singapore. The "Lion City," and Asia remained fairly calm and orderly on New Year's eve although I confess to imbibing a bit to much Buffalo Trace bourbon.

I was in New Orleans a few years back on NYE and saw "Dr. Sick and The Late Greats" at the Spotted Cat. Great show. The club was on the other side of Old New Orleans, on Royal street. I had a major legal/insurance matter in Louisiana that kept me coming back there on business many times. Love that town - but boy can it get "messy" sometimes. The Ruby Slipper still has the best breakfasts and you cannot beat the old-time charm of Antoine's (altho it is a bit expensive). It's a real shame that the city has had to suffer through repeated Democrat administrations, a major hurricane/flooding and now this.

Anyway - may the arrival of the "Trump Baby New Year" bring us all much joy and happiness this year.

Speaking of which, on a planning note: any ideas when the Texas MoMe will be this year? Home (when in the US) is Texas and was thinking I should probably stop by to one of these things if I can arrange it - and I promise to try this year!

The grooming gangs trial summary transcripts are utterly grotesque. It’s incredible we haven’t had mass civil unrest. Media reporting guidelines helped bottle it up. Some of these people are going to walk free soon.

🇬🇧 Extract from the transcript of the trial hearings of the Pakistani gangs who raped hundreds of young English girls in Rotherham. They will be released soon.

Meanwhile @TRobinsonNewEra is in prison….
53) you, Mohammed Karrar, prepared her for gang anal rape by using a pump to expand her anal passage. You subjected her to gang rape by five or six men (count 30). At one point she had four men inside her. A red ball was place in her mouth to keep her quiet. Not only were you both involved in the commercial sexual exploitation of GH, youalso used her for your own self -gratification. You both raped her when she was under 13., you both raped her at the same time (oral and vaginal/anal). It happened on on more than one occasion (count 2.

54)Mohammed Karrar, on one occasion when GH was 12, after raping her, she threatened you with your lack knife. Your reaction was to pick up a baseball bat with a silver metal handle,

3) 6100 (we will see positive movement here, I should think)
4) 1.03 (once Trump ends Ukraine War and rational governments are elected in Germany and France the Euro will stabilize and strengthen. Trump's policies will also strengthen the dollar - so this will be about a push)
5) $3.75 (the real price drop will be in 2026 but it will get down somewhat with more rational energy policies in 2025)
6) $38,900 (there will be more demand for trucks and stupid auto policies for EV's will still screw with the availability - so I see this going up a bit in 2025
7) $92,000 (I see this going down as Trump stabilizes the dollar as an attractive base currency and alternative currencies get less attractive)
$15.00
9) $400 (all EV stock will go down or the companies will go bankrupt as the market for EVs continues to fall out from under this unproven and unsafe technology)
10) $390.00

509 strike her on the head with it, and then insert the baseball bat inside her vagina. You treated her as if she was your commodity. You branded her (with your initial near her anal passage) using a hot hair pin. If GH did not comply with your wishes if you were not with other people , you would lose your temper with her. As part of the grooming, you would provide her with crack cocaine and you injected GH with heroin on numerous occasions (Count 40). 55) When she was not prepared to participate any more, you would issue terrible threats. Your activities took a heavy toll upon her both physically and mentally. In late 2010/2011 she phoned you. You invited her to come and see you. You said “We’ll sort it and make it better.” Once there, you had an argument, and to exert your power and punish her, you pulled down her trousers and raped her.

514 Interesting predictions, Publius.

I presumed inflation would be 9% for the year across the board for commodities and goods. I presumed that would cut average market returns in half. I think as we get closer to the total Bitcoin having been mined that the price will begin to drop significantly. Since Trump is in office, S&W earnings will decrease as gun sales slow. This may be the year Tesla switches from a growth company to a more traditional valuation. And the Euro-to-Dollar reflects more of a 1980-level rate.

YMMV, as the kids abbreviate without spelling out.

515 Morning, insomaniacals. I'm up earlier than I planned on this, the first day of work since 12/17, and am moving like slow-flowing lava. Grrrr.

Did they find the other muzzies of interest in the bombing effort in NO?

I try to keep my eyes open for stuff like that over here. I live in a relatively safe neighborhood in the Texas of Central Europe, it's normally pretty quiet.

Morning, SPinRH! I'm sipping coffee (the collagen powder does not seem to be doing anything for me yet), trying to decide if I feel like a workout (not). How about you?

It's a standard day over here: Cloudy, drizzly; slightly windy. Cold. I'm about to grab my second cappuccino and then get to work. I've let a pile of insurance claims stack up that have to get finished in time to file tax returns.

I should probably get a workout in there somewhere as well. Thanks for the reminder!

We have our two gKids with us overnight.

Our Christmas celebration plans with our two children and their two children went off the rails because our son contracted Fauci's Pox ...

(Why don't we call the Coof, Fauci's Pox? Credit where credit is due, and all that)

... so our gathering will not happen until Saturday evening.

Man, the gKids don't go to bed as readily as they did five years ago.

Back inn ye olden tymes having a social disease, particularly syphilis, was referred to as having "ye pox".

My point was that it is time to start demolishing the hagiography that has grown up around that warped, twisted and inhumane dwarf.

Point taken. I was trying to make a witty rejoinder.

I failed.

532 Black squirrels are the rare ones. I worked at a rural school which had a large population of both. Could see the white ones from a mile away. Black ones, only in the open. Acres of nutting trees supported generations.
