The true and correct version of Christmas.

Luke 2:1-20 (King James Version)

2 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David

5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

Woman stopped at LAX for carrying 88 prohibited items

A woman traveling through Los Angeles International Airport was stopped by the Transportation Security Administration last weekend after agents found 88 prohibited items in her luggage.

The unnamed woman, who was trying to fly from Los Angeles to Philadelphia, had 82 consumer-grade fireworks, three knives, two replica guns and a canister of pepper spray, the TSA said in a release Friday.

The TSA alerted airport police, who confiscated the fireworks and interviewed the passenger. The TSA didn’t say whether the woman received a citation or is facing any charges.

30 About that TSA story. It's a pretty solid bet that she likely hired to test TSA's effectiveness. The Transportation Dept. hires outside contractors to try and get certain items through screening. NCS Pearson is one. Another is Kroll Govt. Services.

The fact that this story popped up right before the main travel season suggests it was an effort to reassure passengers (and, also temper them in believing the process is valid). I've yet to see any articles saying this woman was arrested, which is a pretty good give away.

Prime streaming is shit. I've done the commercial thing, and what's crazy is that if you are watching an old TV show, they don't put the commercials where they belong, they just happen.

The bird that built the nest is hatch'd therein,
The old of years an hour hath not outrun,
Eternal life to live doth now begin,
The word is dumb, the mirth of heaven doth weep,
Might feeble is, and force doth faintly creep.

O dying souls! behold your living spring!
O dazzled eyes! behold your sun of grace!
Dull ears attend what word this word doth bring!
Up, heavy hearts, with joy your joy embrace!
From death, from dark, from deafness, from despairs,
This life, this light, this word, this joy repairs.

Linus begins the passage still holding onto his famous security blanket. But when he gets to the words, "Fear not," he drops it.

He picks it back up when the scene is over, but that Schulz had the insight to include a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment like that is really cool.

I get my author copies mailed for free, which is nice. I also have a credit card that generates more Prime points in a couple of months than Prime costs, so it's pretty much a self-licking ice cream cone for me.

I have found some good shows, but it's very difficult, and Amazon movies seem to hate their audience. There have been several really good series that just got canceled. Why bother, then? Why advertise a series with a clear story arc, and that's really good with top notch actors only to cancel it because crybabies complain?

76 I opened the front door and the cats Snowflake and Trumpy emerged from hiding and raced in. I combed them today, their erect tails are so fluffy.

Cat nip and Temptations treats so they should be happy the rest of the night.

Almost 3 months they've been 'visiting.' We have come up with routines now, mainly to keep me sane. Not our cats. Which amuses me.

And takes the pressure off.

Mohammed's house was demolished because the Saudis said it could lead to "idolatry."

Or archeology, which would show it was built well after Mohammed's alleged lifetime.

86 It's like the opposite of Quiet Quitting. You quit you job but you keep showing up for work.

At a previous company I was friends with a manager peer. She had talked with me about the problems she was having with one employee and told me she was going to let the employee go.

The next day I saw the employee at the office being weird but she was always weird.

I ran into my manager friend and asked her if she decided to not let the employee go...and the manager's eyes got big... "WHERE DID YOU SEE HER?!?" and when I told her she ran off to get HR.

I found out later the employee had been laid off and had just...showed up for work the next day anyway. She followed someone else in when they used their keycard. I don't think the employee was up to mischief...I think she was just off and really wasn't ready to take being laid off.

108 If we're bitching about Prime. I'm in Canada.

I hate things freaking disappearing to 5 other outlets. I watched and enjoyed the 10 'Saw' movies. Bought 3. Wanted to watch the series again and several aren't available anymore.

M3gan, with Violet McGraw, was free. I saw it. Now, have to rent or buy. Bought 'The Black Phone' with Madeleine McGraw, Violet's older sister, but can only see it when I have Prime.

They do have crappy shows like 'The Last Ship' that I like to put on and fall asleep to.

Oh, and I saw that 'Tomorrow War' movie which sounded great but between the plot holes and the diversity, as each minite passed, it was clear Amazon was passing a Yule log.

'Just Add Magic' is an amazing kids show though. Beautifully done. Olivia Sanabia turned into an amazingly beautiful young woman.

That one grinds my gears.

Sesame Workshop has over half a billion in assets, and rakes in around $200 million per year in revenue, but it's always "But....but...what about Big Bird?" whenever someone suggests that maybe we shouldn't be paying PBS to produce communist propaganda.

The Starlink ion thruster is a marvel of engineering

Steve Jurvetson@FutureJurvetson
...
The final EOS thruster design is in the Smithsonian. It was successfully tested twice in space on flights of Air Force Blue Scout missiles in 1964.

Back in 1912, Goddard postulated that high-velocity streams of electrons and positive ions could be “energized” by solar-electric power supplies to provide thrust for an interplanetary spacecraft. He went further to suggest that the source of the ions could come from exposing alkaline atoms, such as mercury or cesium, to hot tungsten surfaces. He was spot on!

During an exercise many years ago, one of the training events was terrorists infiltrating the base. Our office was unarmed, which we thought absurd.

To remedy this, I took a sheet of paper and tore it into a rough handgun shape and wrote "Simulated M-9" on it and give it to our lieutenant, who tucked it into her web gear.

For the duration of the exercise, it was passed around the office to the ranking officer or NCO.

We also learned that nap time began as soon as the fighters took off.

We have a clay Christmas tree ornamented with costume jewelry that my grandma made. It wasn't bad back in the day, but has become sadly misshapen and some of the ornaments have been lost to time. When we were putting out decorations this year I did decide to "display" it on the bureau in Mom's room, instead of the dining room or living room...

204 Nativity sets always assume three Wise Men-only because of the three gifts. Might have been 2, 3, or 20. Was probably a large entourage. And the Wise Men did not go to the manger, it was much later. The Bible clearly states the family was in a house. They shepherds were there shortly after the birth.

I was watching a video on pre-Islamic Arabic religion, and holy cow, Muhammed plagiarized heavily from the Arabs. For example, they were worshipping the meteorite for centuries before he showed up. Of course he pulled the same stunt he did with the Jews and Christians: "Well, ackshully, you've been worshipping Allah the whole time but I can tell you how to do it correctly!" Too bad for him that he didn't get rid of *all* the stone carvings out of the desert that detailed their pre-Islamic religion. Whoops! Whoopsie!

Cardboard cones, with felt for clothing, scraps of rick-rack & metallic cord for embellishments.. The figures' 'heads' were simply scraps of old stockings, stuffed with bits of fabric. Very simple.

It's buried in boxes in our attic & I haven't been able to get up there to bring it out... so no pics.

272 Democrats have leveraged their power by dividing everyone into groups, down to the granular level, and getting everybody at each other’s throats.

These are implicit assumptions, that (for example) “non college educated whites” will vote for so and so, but left handed lesbians who live on the odd side of the street will vote this way.

It’s an obsolete world view. Blacks vote Democrat. The End. Biden acknowledged this by saying “If you don’t vote for me, you ain’t black!”

Posted by: Doof at December

Never get rid of it, that set is yours. Mrs B has been using the same set since our first house that we got right before we were married. I didn't really appreciate it at first. My focus was always the tree which became more and more elaborate over the years. Somebody had given us a new nativity set. Fancier, bigger, had lights, etc. She viewed it as a cursed object and it never left the box. I said why, and she pointed to the original and said this one is ours. One Christmas I looked at it more carefully than usual. I realized that the entire manger was wood, realistically constructed, from the rough hewn beams, the support columns and framing that looked like they were made from tree branches to simulate the construction made from cut down trees, the tiny rope binding, tiny nails, the roof, the hay, all to the finest detail. The figurines have amazing detail, painted perfectly, and their lifelike poses. She was right, this one can't be improved on. Its perfect.

I am loving the nativity scenes stories so much.

My grandmother gave me her little 1930 ANRI Nativity when I had my own family. One of those with the two-dimensional figures glued in place.

I decided to reproduce it in a larger size for our creche, so I did the math, scouted the materials and built if at the family warehouse, all by myself.
Only when we set it up at home and stepped back to look at it, did I notice that, embiggened, it looked like the Alamo.
If you put a lot of little artificial trees around it, it helps.

The initial proposal from the UK to Vichy was to move the French fleet to Martinique/etc, there to remain under Allied custody. This offer having been declined, they did it The Hard Way, Royal Navy attacked the fleet, and they lost over 1,000 men in the attack at Mers al-Kebir.

In Aruba there's a sunken German ship, the Antilles, that I think was scuttled in May 1940, presumably because the Dutch would seize it anyway. Snorkled on it once.

413 Every Christmas Eve I have been on the search for the best rendition of "Oh Holy Night".

Can't decide.

But Kings Return , an acapella group, might be number one. These guys FEEL it.
Pavarotti and Domingo seem too forced..
Groban is ok..
the divas Houston Celine Carey...clearly in it for the $$.

Ave María sung in the stairwell by Kings Return is simply astounding in its gracefulness.

Oh, and I inherited my mother's Hummel crèche.
Cannot be a sweeter depiction of the holiest night ever. It is amongst my most prized possessions.

Thx MisHum. For being with this motley crew tonight. Just love this place. Merry Christmas!

I have Christmas lights on the front of the house, and they are lit. The palm trees are not decorated. I had a big old recumbent barrel cactus in the side yard that survived for years, but the past summer's drought killed it, and it has collapsed to a husk. But a baseball-size green baby cactus has sprung up in the middle of the wreck.
