Part of a series in Padua's Scrovegni Chapel, and his first mature work, the cycle is considered to be one of the greatest achievements in Western art. The frescoes fill the chapel, forming a narrative.

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.

Weigh not his crib, his wooden dish, Nor beasts that by him feed; Weigh not his mother's poor attire Nor Joseph's simple weed. This stable is a prince's court, This crib his chair of state, The beasts are parcel of his pomp, The wooden dish his plate. The persons in that poor attire His royal liveries wear; The prince himself is come from heaven— This pomp is prizèd there. With joy approach, O Christian wight, Do homage to thy king; And highly prize his humble pomp Which he from heaven doth bring. - St. Robert Southwell Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at December 25, 2024 09:39 AM (dxSpM) 27

Not only did Giotto revolutionize painting by breaking from the formalistic Byzantine style thus initiating the early Renaissance, but he was also a creative architect. He designed the campanile on the Duomo in Florence.

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Do not miss your visitation. The prophesy is fulfilled. The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and firstborn from among the dead, so that in all things He may have preeminence. For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through the blood of His cross. I own a wood panel work that has plaster, paint and extensive gold leaf done by a master of gold leaf, Louis Ross, from 1940. It's 8'x9' oak panel and trim. I rescued it from demolition in a building adjacent to Madison Square Garden in 1985. Had to strap it to the roof of my van. Art Deco style has cows, chickens, a farm couple, wheat, cotton plant, spice plants, etc. If I could figure out tinyurl I would share.

Merry Christmas and happy Hanukkah to everyone.
The simplicity of the setting Giotto used makes the scene even more meaningful. The blue sky and gold of the clothing is reflected in Mary's robe, tying the rich, special aspects of the color scheme together. Mary is the central figure, even more than Jesus, which surprised me. Even resting Joseph (I assume) is central. It seems to emphasize the human aspect in the miraculous birth. Interesting and effective. Posted by: JTB at December 25, 2024 10:04 AM (yTvNw) 69

The ox represents Jews (by analogy to circumcision), and the donkey represents Gentiles (the vice versa analogy).
Giotto has them both lined up at the feed trough, in a way that is reminiscent of communicants lining up at the Communion rail, or the door of a roodscreen. They are not jostling each other, but are at peace. The ox is making eye contact with Mary, practically, while the donkey's head is bowed. The shepherds' sheep are also looking at the Child, but the black goat who is with them is turned away. He's the only creature in the entire painting who isn't turned toward Jesus. Actually, not all the angels are looking directly at Jesus, but they seem to be doing something official. Bodyguards for Mary, maybe.
And St. Joseph is asleep, poor guy, and he's facing outwards. But he's probably having some kind of prophetic dream again, and he knows the shepherds are temporarily on watch. Posted by: Suburbanbanshee at December 25, 2024 10:13 AM (p2GXS) 84

Lady assisting Mary -- The "Protoevangelium of James" and some other extra-biblical accounts have Mary assisted by either a midwife, or by various women who were also in the house. These women then provide an extra witness to the miraculous nature of the Virgin Birth.
This would be pretty logical, because if the cave was the stable of a typical Middle Eastern house built onto a cave, and if the guest area (katalyma) were indeed full before the Holy Family got there, that house in Bethlehem would have been chock full of House of David cousins of both sexes. And of course some of the ladies would want to help, and/or poke their noses into whatever was going on. (The early accounts also include a late-arriving, unbelieving midwife named Salome, who contradicts the other midwife, gets temporarily zotted for being too nosy, and then gets healed.) We're lucky to have a couple of actual Ital-speakers aboard, so maybe someone can unpack the intricacies. Looks like "Giotto" is the diminutive of "Ambrose," which won't get anybody going much. Little Ambrose, yeah OK.

A little late for your Christmas cooking but I’ve just uploaded an 1876 (really 1875, since it’s an almanac) cookbook with some very nice recipes. Cocoanut pie, tomato jam, and molasses gingerbread were the highlights.
Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at December 25, 2024 10:28 AM (EXyHK) I adore old cookbooks. I think it is the simplicity of the preparation equipment, and not relying on things like crushed ritz crackers and cream of mushroom soup. "simmer" "hard simmer" "seeth" "boil" and "over a low bank of coals" are about as complicated as I like, and the instruction that "the meat should stick a little as you fry it to assure the best flavor" is a delightful way to say that you really need a hot pan to sear your meat for a stew. I enjoy the puzzle sometimes, too. What did these instructions mean to the person writing the recipe? What were they assuming that we have forgotten? Like salt. Pre-refrigeration, the problem with salt wasnt adding it, it was getting rid of it at the time of use. Thats why (I suspect) so many old recipes omit how much salt to add. And you rarely see the phrase room temperature in pre-refrigeration recipes, for the same reason. Room temperature was the standard.
