The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

I am a dedicated believer in the concept of American Exceptionalism, and I will defend the idea that Americans are the finest people on the planet.

But nowhere in our culture is there as much of a disparity between those ideas, and their practice, than our government; specifically our representatives, though generally pretty much everyone.

Ace wrote about Matt Gaetz and the House ethics report that was released yesterday, saying:

Now do all 434 other members. As long as we're getting judgy.

And he is absolutely correct. The report was a political hit job, and the House should be embarrassed. But...we SHOULD be judgy when it comes to the people who represent us, because they also represent the country and its culture.

I am under no illusions about what power does.

Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority; still more when you superadd the tendency of the certainty of corruption by authority.
-- John Emerich Edward Dalberg-Acton

The current crop of reprobates (with none of the humor of that word) gleefully break their own rules, lots of laws, and then create carve-outs in those laws so that they can behave differently than the people they claim to represent. For instance, Congress may buy and sell stocks based on what is called "Material Non-Public Information" (MNPI). You can't. Nobody except Congress can. You will go to jail if you do it! The federal government's financial enforcement arm (the SEC) sends people to jail every year for that sort of stuff, and they fine a lot more. That's how a conniving mid-wit like Nancy Pelosi can be fabulously wealthy (net worth of more than $240,000,000) on a salary of $200k/year.

There is a secret slush fund used by Congress to pay off the people whom they sexually harass and sexually assault. Wouldn't you like to know where that money has gone, and for whom? My guess is that there are also plenty of auto accident injuries that were hushed up, and probably a bunch of DUIs in that mix.

And even when our representatives aren't committing felonies, they are behaving like entitled asses. They park where they want. They behave abominably at public restaurants. They sneer at their constituents. They are contemptuous of the people who pay for their obscene junkets to fascinating places. Anyone want to bet against me when I suggest that there are probably a dozen members of Congress in London or Paris or Prague on "official business," conveniently scheduled to correspond with Christmas shopping?

Let's start holding our representatives to some minimum standard of conduct. Let us demand that they behave as if they are in our business, working for us. Because that is exactly what they are doing.

I am being optimistic in the extreme when I hope for a shift away from an imperial government. It won't happen absent a fundamental upheaval in our society. But we can demand some propriety from these people. Matt Gaetz probably didn't have sex with a 17-year old girl, but does anyone doubt that he boasted of his conquests, and behaved like a high school boy?

Term limits are problematic in a free society, but I see no other way to limit -- even slightly -- the sense of entitlement and the disconnect between our representatives and us. "Throw The Bums Out" should be reflexive! Make them prove that they deserve our trust by not behaving like they are royalty!

5 As we talked about yesterday, it is ridiculous to shame Gaetz for sexual issues when the entire Dem Party is dedicated to letting their sexual freak flag round the clock. Gaetz had bad friends, apparently, but the 17 year old appears to have had an official Florida ID saying that she was 18, given her by a corrupt State official who was pimping her out to his friends. Sordid story, but not much worse than any of the rest in DC.

11 Term limits. Mandatory retirement age. Strict enforcement of ALL laws, including insider trading, libel and slander (ESPECIALLY those!). Congress goes into mandatory recess on election day until the next is sworn in except in extreme emergencies (I'm leaning towards strict delineation of what those would be).

That's my absolute basic position for Congress.

Do not get me started about the rest.

It exposes a whole new tactic to us. How many official, authentic, fraudulent ID's are created to blackmail people in government? As long as one of the ID's says 17, you can get away with it. Doesn't matter if she's 17 or 21, really.

No, adults should have a moral code and live up to it. The code should be higher for the people to whom we give power. I expect restraint and dignity befitting the office from the people who represent me. What the Democrats do is not a justification for poor behavior. That's "but Bobby did it" level thinking.

And before anyone starts, this is not "we're better than that", which seems to be the all-purpose mocking excuse some use. It's saying I have expectations, and you will meet them, or I won't vote for you again.

As long as that remains the case we will never have true representation. Especially since most of those staffers are graduates of a *very* limited number of poli-sci programs from hard-core leftist universities.

Netflix is going to release "Zero Day" on February 20th - where the United States suffers a major cyberattack and Robert DeNiro starts as a "former President of the United States" (huh?) who has to lead the recovery efforts.

Zero Day stars De Niro as respected former U.S. President George Mullen, who, as head of the Zero Day Commission, is charged with finding the perpetrators of a devastating cyber attack that has caused chaos around the country and thousands of fatalities

Particularly given that it's DeNiro, I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to find out who the perpetuators are!

Will the evil perpetrators of the cyberattack turn out to be:

1) Iran?

2) Left-wing terrorists?

or

3) Trump supporters?

Gosh, it's going to be a huge surprise finding out who's responsible, isn't it!

70 "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority; still more when you superadd the tendency of the certainty of corruption by authority."

Coulter interviewed one of her old friends recently, and they differed on the above point. Coulter felt that men like Washington or others of his era were not so bad, not "bad men". Her friend felt the necessary level of "testosterone" for the job came with a lot of "badness".

idk, certainly there were affairs and some bad actions, but at least the founders had a bigger interest in liberty and justice, imo. They were not "bad men" of the self interest sorts that hold power today, I would guess.

Or there is the story of King David and Bathsheba, and the (arranged by David) death of her husband Uriah. That seems pretty bad, yet David was "a man after God's own heart" ... and I guess he later "repented". But being king in hard ancient times is not the government we seek.

111 I'm not sure who was the first to say it, but the important thing is to make it easier for bad people to do the right thing.

There's not enough good people in government. The (un-)natural selection, both as gears and cogs in the machine and in the elected front-facing roles, tend towards bad people doing bad things to get ahead. Where they continue to do bad things, like graft (among others).

So, make it easier to do the right and good thing, by making the bad thing painful. The good thing should be the short circuit, not the one of greatest resistance.

The same thing can be said about general life - Instapundit had a post about a pair of (alleged) thieves in cuffs, wondering why stealing is a felony. The other one answered "Bi!ch new laws". It's unclear whether the expelative referred to new laws or the partner-in-crime. But now there's penalties. Instead of being good, they're going to suffer for doing the wrong thing. Maybe next time will be better.

149 One of the amusing parts of the current Canadian political crisis is that the leader of the New Democratic Party, Jagmeet Singh, refuses to call for new elections right now.

Apparently Singh doesn't qualify for a lucrative parliamentary pension unless he stays in office for a few more months.
Posted by: The ARC of History! at December 24, 2024 11:35 AM (uxCna)

The punchline to that joke is that Singh finally did say he will support a vote for new elections - but only on the day after Parliament was recessed, and won't be back in session until after his Pension is secure. (sometime this spring)

In case you don't know...

steve colbert's rise to "fame" is due to being in oddball tv shows in the late 90's + early aughts, such as Strangers With Candy and voices on Adult Swim (Cartoon Network) shows.

As a "comedian," he's a failure. He can read a script, deliver lines, and has the "look" of an average "proper" man, which makes his lines "funny," I guess.

I would guess it is mixed cold with baking powder (or self rising flour), and the bicarbonate in the baking powder begins to react to the alum and moisture, the can itself is pressure sealed, so the CO2 permeates the biscuit dough in saturation like sodapop in a plastic 2 liter bottle. Keeping it cold keeps the CO2 in saturation as well, but it will "foam" when you crack the cylinder open.

If you warm it too much I am told the cylinders will crack open and may well launch themselves

You can't overcome idiotic voters. Term limits, $ limits, blah blah blah. None of them address the problem.

Of course the idiotic voters suffer from generational decline, educational decline, and a dead system which isn't even a dead two-party system, which the entire country lives under. Dead = inertia etc making it extremely difficult to actually change elected personnel, especially *within* the GOP.

The Land Of Nod by Robert Louis Stevenson

From breakfast on through all the day
At home among my friends I stay,
But every night I go abroad
Afar into the land of Nod.
All by myself I have to go,
With none to tell me what to do —
All alone beside the streams
And up the mountain-sides of dreams.
The strangest things are there for me,
Both things to eat and things to see,
And many frightening sights abroad
Till morning in the land of Nod.
Try as I like to find the way,
I never can get back by day,
Nor can remember plain and clear
The curious music that I hear.

There is a calculated amount of pressure generated by the reaction within the cylinder. That pressure is offset by the thickness of the container. 286 Spent quite a few years on the Hill and the visible debauchery wasn't quite as spicy as suggested above. But that was a while ago, and there are many reasons to think the entire thing has changed quite a bit. Such as politics essentially disappearing from the Senate, and it becoming a watered down version of the House (i.e. Dems at least voting as a bloc, and GOP doing so except for a few who vote with the other side when it counts).

Packwood's office was right around the corner, and the front office girls always advised newcomers/replacements about him. Of course the few who were very attractive over those years faced predation from within the office (ahemm).

There's always been the Wilbur Mills/Fannie Fox/playing drunk in a fountain stuff, over the ages, but it's the substantive disaster that is Congress and the inability of voters to change it that are important.

301 Bend the iron rod the floter is attached to a wee bit.

302 Re the toilet I have not tried slapping hot iron to it yet.

Posted by: blaster at December 24, 2024 12:17 PM (QfvaV)

303 I can get it to stop by fiddling with it. I have to lift the floater above full extension more than once and a flush in between. Weird. The shut off valve isn't shutting off.

It's pretty straightforward and it's about $15 at Lowe's I just don't want to go out in the cold and then work on a toilet.

If you've got a metal float rod, bend it a little.

For some reason, the idiots at the NFL thought it would be a good idea to have Christmas day games, today. On a Wednesday.

307 New post. View cows arguing how distressed to be about Trump.

308 Actually the Newsome recall failed, and I think the numbers were similar to his re-election numbers.

What's more astonishing, but more in a wow-how-has-the-world-changed way, is that Gray Davis was recalled (only time in state history) when the most incandescent political issues displeasing voters were 1) drivers' licenses for illegals 2) an increase in the vehicle registration fee 3) a particularly outrageous sweetheart deal with a public sector union (prison guards).

Today if you added all those up - and informed the political zombies of the state about them - it would barely elicit a reaction.

312 In 1768, the British seized John Hancock’s trading vessel Liberty over import duties for the 25 pipas of Madeira wine that it carried, which resulted in rioting in Boston. When the Declaration of Independence was signed less than a decade later, it was toasted by the signatories with a glass of Madeira.

Eh, the initial New Granada rebellion riots were started over an ugly vase.

313 And the downstairs bathroom toilet floater valve has decided ehh that whole stopping the water flow after the tank is filled is FOR LOSERS.

Nothing like plumbing under pressure.
Posted by: blaster

It might be a piece of gravel or something like that preventing the valve from sealing. Try working it a few times. Also check the flapper. If it is not dealing, a quick temporary fix is to smear petroleum jelly on the sealing surface.

314 They should My Pillow all of the death row inmates who received a commutation of sentence.
Posted by: Boss Moss at December 24, 2024 11:48 AM (wZ2Bf)

Just put 'em all back in Gen Pop. If some other inmate scrags them, well and good, and the scragger gets some reward. If the scrag some other inmate, oh well. Charge them with capital murder, and hang them forthwith.

316 I don't believe in term limits. But how about if they don't show up for work they get suspended then kicked out? I'm an officer in various organizations and if I miss meetings I can get removed.

317 Remember how terribly concerned folks were about gay sex on the Hill? This is typical of the Left. Anything goes unless a Republican is involved. Then they become Puritans.

Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals #4:

"Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules."

The reason the Alinsky left never has to live up to their own book of rules is because they have no book of rules. Their one golden rule is BAMN (win by any means necessary).

318 "My guess is that there are also plenty of auto accident injuries that were hushed up, and probably a bunch of DUIs in that mix."

I'm sure you're right. ~40 years ago I worked with a woman who lived (had lived?) on the same block as Daniel Patrick Moynahan. Someone praised him for his politics, and she said that my be so, but he was drunk all the time and often bashed up his neighbor's cars parked on the block when he got home from a hard day governing.

319 You know what would change behaviors?
Consequences.

Many of our institutions and facilities operate behavior modification programs.
The participants in these programs when graduated/released almost always quickly revert back to negative behaviors.
We should be fostering character modification programs.
Becoming a true disciple of Christ is the most efficient and enduring form of positive character modification.
