From the MET:
This conversation piece—a group portrait with narrative elements—was the first commissioned work of a type that Johnson would often paint. It shows William Tilden Blodgett (1823–1875), a supporter of the Union cause and a founding trustee of the Metropolitan Museum, with his family in the Renaissance Revival parlor of their house at 27 West 25th Street. Depicted during the Civil War, at a time of urban upheaval, the serene interior decorated for Christmas, embodies "the best sentiment of home," as a critic observed in 1865. Only the toy of a caricatured black male dancer held by the young boy hints at pressing issues of racial strife and emancipation. Posted by: rhennigantx at December 24, 2024 09:35 AM (gbOdA) 28

The other day I was at a friend's house-we hunt waterfowl together-and in his den that features a world class fireplace we ate something I've not had the pleasure of since childhood, roast chestnuts. This fireplace has an apron you can sit on and actually cook at. Has the swinging spit and everybody. It is a working copy of a colonial fireplace that was there when they purchased the home. Anyway that experience took me right back to being a kid, used to roast them by the pound on weekends.

A gorgeous, nostalgic scene. The relatively dark color scheme of the room makes the figures stand out, especially the children who are the focus of the painting. I like how each figure has their own expression and stance. The parents expressions, particularly the mothers, are especially effective, reflecting on the joy they find in their children. A very effective and appealing painting. It reminds me of Washington Irving's Christmas stories which is a good thing.

The scarcity fee was because Ford was only supposed to produce 1,000 of the Shelby approved GT500s. So, the dealerships were charging a markup to find this 'rare' car. And then Ford produced more than 1,000 of them. Even the 2008 GT500s had a scarcity fee, usually about $2,000, attached. Posted by: Anna Puma at December 24, 2024 10:29 AM (C2QKs) 201

"Somebody turn on a light."
There was a fashion in American painting in the mid-19th century of using sepia-tinted varnish on paintings, in the belief that it made them look more like Rembrandt's work. The problem is that many of Rembrandt's paintings have that sepia tint because their varnish has darkened over the centuries, and they simply need to be cleaned to show naturalistic color. Likewise, this painting may merely need to be cleaned. Posted by: Nemo at December 24, 2024 10:38 AM (S6ArX) 230

I’ve got to go to the store to get coffee. I’m dreading it.

The dark tones let the artist show off his skills in highlights and shading. Also, the young man is using a pointy thing to make a figure walk the plank. I do believe the shading in that region illustrates the understanding of shading prevalent at the time.

Perspective on Eastman Johnson, Toys and Interpretive Play in Christmas-Time, The Blodgett Family Published on May 10, 2022 Words by Rika Burnham It begins, "In a far gallery of the American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, past the cinematic stars of Madame X, Washington Crossing the Delaware, and Heart of the Andes, hangs Christmas-Time, The Blodgett Family [Hills 31.7.3 The Blodgett Family], a small, quiet picture by Eastman Johnson, one of many domestic interior pictures in this gallery devoted to scenes of nineteenth-century American life. We peer in, my students and I, as if standing unnoticed in the shadows of the Blodgett family’s parlor, in their home on West 25th Street in New York City. We marvel at the room’s opulent Renaissance-revival splendor as we are charmed by figures far too absorbed in their own spectacle to pay attention to time-traveling interlopers." And there are 5 perspectives in a column to the left side that add context. Very nice, CBD. thx. Posted by: L - Rooster one day, feather duster the next at December 24, 2024 12:18 PM (NFX2v) 328
