Festivus Monday Overnight Open Thread - December 23, 2024 [Doof]

(Mystery click is for the haters who don't appreciate this display)

doof-Festivus.jpg

Happy Festivus, Hordelings. The ONT has got a lot of problems with you people, and now you're gonna hear about it.

****

Airing of Grievances

Festivus begins with the airing of grievances, and the ONT does have one grievance to air tonight. Every Sunday and Monday ONT in December 2024 has concluded with a Rush deep cut. With few notable and appreciated exceptions, there has been far too little mention of these tracks. The ONT works tirelessly and diligently to find these and all the other musical selections which are scattered around each night. Be better, Hordelings.

doof-geddy.jpg

(Mystery click? Of course there is!)

****

Feats of Strength

Festivus ends with feats of strength. The video below wonders what if people rode dinosaurs instead of walked. The ONT judges say this indeed qualifies as a feat of strength.

(H/T to Hrothgar)

Side note: Your humble host has met and spoken to a guy who calls himself "T Rex" at multiple NoVa and Texas MoMes. The guy in this video is NOT the guy I've met and hung out with, but he appears to be the REAL T Rex. Methinks we have been fooled here at AOSHQ.

After Festivus, Check out the NORAD Santa Tracker

doof-norad.jpg

Weasel mentioned the Santa Tracker on Sunday's Gun Thread. Here's a little more about how it came to be.

A Wrong Number to a Top-Secret Military Phone Led to NORAD Santa Tracker With Millions of Fans Worldwide.

In December 1955, one year after President Eisenhower established the hotline, the red phone rang at the Continental Air Defense Command, now known as NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command). The country was in the middle of the Cold War, tensions were high, and the number was for emergency use only.

When Commanding Officer Colonel Harry Shoup answered, he heard a squeaky voice asking, “Is this Santa Claus?”

Shoup thought it was a prank and responded accordingly, until the boy started crying.

Realizing it wasn’t a joke, Shoup, a father of four, played Santa and then spoke to the mom, who told him the number was in a holiday ad for the Sears department store. The number printed in the advertisement was one digit off from what Sears intended to print.

Who knows if Shoup saw the humor at the time, but the ad said: “Call me on my private phone and I will talk to you personally any time, day or night…Kiddies be sure to dial the correct number.”

The kids kept calling and Shoup put two airmen on phone duty to answer the phone as Santa.

“It got to be a big joke at the command center,” Shoup’s daughter Terri Van Keuren said. “You know, ‘The old man’s really flipped his lid this time. We’re answering Santa calls’.”

There was a giant board used to track airplanes and on Christmas Eve some of the staff added a sleigh with reindeer on it. When Shoup saw it, they apologized and offered to remove it, but he thought the sleigh was great.

The ONT Continues to Look Out for You

Tonight’s ONT closes with respect for the Golden EIB Microphone (extreme dust warning)

****

All grievances and joking aside, I wish all of you the very best as you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, or Festivus! Thank you for your kindness and encouragement over the past month as I nervously jumped with both feet into ONT hosting. There are no people like Horde people! Stay safe out there!

He did a great job of illustrating how fucked up leftists are.

How tough is that? Not very. It was remarkable at the time how much they hated him. “Progressives” controlled the big major TV networks, PBS, major print like NYT and WP. I think maybe WSJ editorial section leaned conservative sometimes. That was about it. National Review? Sure, Jan.

Here ole Rushbo started broadcasting on AM Radio by that time a declining, moribund medium. And the left totally lost their shit. Couldn’t believe it. 99% Control of The Narrative Is Not Enough Guys. I seem to recall their first inclination was to have congress outlaw him or something. An early glimpse on what was to come as the left slipped further and further into madness. In 1988 it was still possible to have a discussion with liberals. Sort of.

The death of retail is slowly but inexorably lowering the standard of living/increasing the hassle of living. So many things need to seen, touched, assessed physically, to get what you really want (or refine what you really want or need).

Technically, the french movie "Inside" is a Christmas movie.

A French woman loses her guy in a car crash. Four months later, the doctor at the hospital sends her home on Christmas Eve and they will induce labor in the morning if neccessary.

She goes home. But a lady with a knife shows up.

The movie is only about 80 minutes long. The first 15 to 20 minutes are slow. The rest of it, pretty relentless.

Prepared me for the 'Saw' series...all 10 films.

But Christmas movie!

273 Now that I think about it, Julian and Gregorian wouldn’t have differed yet. It was only much later that the Julian calendar got off from the celestial year. Why did the Monk Dennis (who set the date of AD vs. BC) get the date of our Savior’s birth off by so much (I know the big clue is Herod’s murder of the innocents in Bethlehem + Herod’s death in 4 BC, also the Wise Men met Jesus as a toddler - to paidion). But why didn’t Dennis know that?

So, about 1915 I went outside for a smoke, as we had a ‘wind warning’ for then. Dead Calm. I came inside and read interweb shit and Anita got on the treadmill to watch “Elementary”. Five minutes later the wind hit the house like the shockwave from a bomb. The sky lit up like the 4th of July as limbs hit wires, fuses blew, and then it got very very dark…

This old man dragged the genset outside and put some gas in it, sprayed a little ether into the air filter and yanked on the pull starter for the 10HP Briggs & Stratton. 282 The Biblical Timeline of History is very involved and takes hundreds of hours of study. No one was ever able, until recently, to harmonize the perfect harmony of the dates of the Hebrew Kings, for example. And all the "begat" references, ironed out as to who was a direct son/father and who was a grand or great grandfather, etc.

The best work on this is at ebiblefellowship.org. Link on home page for timeline studies. Several guys there have studied this seriously for thousands of hours and their findings and charts are there.

297 Festivus it is for me.

While sitting at stop sign, the front driver's side wheel area of my new Toyota RAV4 (4700 miles) got plowed into tonight by dip shit 2 who was driving to fast and was unable to stop when dip shit 1 made a left turn in front dip shit 2.

Dip shit 1 pulled into two of the three oncoming lanes of heavy traffic and stopped when he realized he would never clear them.

All other lanes of traffic were able to stop in time except for dip shit 2 in the middle lane who tried swerve around him. Of course the two smacked into each other which caused dip shit 2 go careening and plowed into me. After the cars were cleared I checked for skip marks from dip shit 2's car - none. He never touched his brakes.

Besides the obligatory sheet metal destruction, my front wheel is sitting at about a 45 degree angle. The car may be totaled. Yeah. This is going to be a nightmare.
