Thanks for stopping by this Sunday’s ONT. Hope you are cozy and warm wherever you are! Let's see what fell out of the ONT bag of stuff tonight.
Shutdown Theater Mini-Rant So the latest version of shutdown theater is over. Congress once again fails to do it's job during the spring and summer, and we live through two more instances (thus far) of the all too familiar pearl clutching and doomsday blame-gaming. This rant is not about that, instead it is about the in-fighting on the Republican side. 38 of the most fiscally conservative members of the House voted against the first version of the Continuing Resolution (CR) because it contained the usual massive amounts of pork and also because there was a provision for raising the debt ceiling. This ignited a firestorm between factions on the right. President-elect Trump apparently wants the debt increase and pushed Republican House members to approve the CR. He called out no-voters such as Chip Roy of TX and threatened to help primary them. Right-leaning pundits who reflexively support whatever Trump says or does jumped to his defense. It's baffling that Trump attacked some of the most fiscally conservative members of the House. They are the ones most likely to help carry his agenda through Congress. And he slung arrows at them over the CR. Bold strategy. R.I.P. Rickey Henderson Rickey Henderson, 'greatest of all time,' dies at 65 Rickey Henderson, the greatest leadoff hitter and base stealer in Major League Baseball history whose blazing speed, discerning eye and unusual home run power complemented an irrepressible swagger that led him from the sandlots of Oakland, California, to the Baseball Hall of Fame, died Friday. He was 65. The Henderson family released a statement Saturday evening confirming the Hall of Famer's death. "A legend on and off the field, Rickey was a devoted son, dad, friend, grandfather, brother, uncle, and a truly humble soul," the statement from his wife Pamela and his three daughters read. "Rickey lived his life with integrity, and his love for baseball was paramount. Now, Rickey is at peace with the Lord, cherishing the extraordinary moments and achievements he leaves behind." The family did not announce a cause of death but did thank the doctors and nurses at UCSF hospital, which they said cared for Henderson with "dedication and compassion." With a fearless, flamboyant style of play, which thrilled some players and fans thirsting for theatrical energy from a sport known for its staidness and irritated others who believed the iconoclastic approach disrespected old traditions, Henderson broke boundaries alongside reams of records during a 25-year career spent with nine teams. In a sport that relies on the historical consistency of its numbers, Henderson obliterated the record book, owning the all-time stolen-base record with 1,406, an astounding 468 more than St. Louis Cardinals great Lou Brock, who held the record of 938 for a dozen years before Henderson surpassed him in 1991. Henderson holds the records for the most stolen bases in a single season with 130 in 1982, the most times leading the league in steals with 12 and most consecutive years leading the league in steals with seven. As a 39-year-old in 1998 with Oakland, Henderson became the oldest player in history to lead the American League in steals with 66.More about Rickey here. Why no leadoff hitter will ever top Rickey Henderson. Wholesome Content

I have an interesting Rickey Henderson stat.
Babe Ruth has over twice as many triples lifetime than Rickey. Rickey was a right handed pull hitter. If you peruse the triples list, you will see it dominated by left handed batters. The right field corner is much further from third than the left field corner. The list has a lot of old-time players on it, when some of the outfields resembled prairies, rather than a proper stadium. Rickey was on a lot of teams, including the Seattle Mariners near the end of his career. The last game of the season, Oakland visited T-Mobile Park for their last visit ever, in fact their last game ever as Oakland. I remember (sort of) mall shopping in the 80's on Christmas Eve. I've always been a procrastinator. I'd march in, armed with my credit card and would be out in less than an hour. There was a gal at my local watering hole who set up a table and would wrap what we brought her for a reasonable fee, whilst we enjoyed a few adult beverages. Good times.

Oh, my memories are slightly different. I would have all my shopping done and wrapped by Nov !. Then I would return to my parent's home, only for my beloved father to inform me he hadn't done any shopping and had no ideas, but that we needed to go to the mall now...after a couple of years of this nonsense, I asked him for money in Sept and did all his shopping for him, wrapped everything, and just brought it when I went home. All the big buildings downtown "bought" steam heat from the central Edison steam plant by the river. The pipes were insulated, but all the big stores had the pipes just under the sidewalk, so snow and ice were always melted off. perhaps just music?
One of the things that makes music something to be nostalgic for is the shared cultural experience. Music for a long time has been very personalized. Rick Beato did an episode on that recently, arguing that theres no longer a generational style of music like nineties or eighties or seventies, etc. I think he has a very good point. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing but it does make music no longer a thing of its time, which is helpful for nostalgia purposes. I’m at that age where my brother and I had to pick out what we wanted for Christmas out of the Spiegel catalog. It was always a great day when it came in the mail because we knew Christmas wasn’t far behind. Although, it did seem as if it took forever for Christmas to come.

It was good to see the auditorium so packed, and the crowd so appreciative. That said… Old ladies sitting right behind us, both nights, sounded like they were dying of consumption. We had several air-pumped BB guns and one day, a couple of friends who were brothers got into an argument while in possession of two of those BB guns. It went like this after the initial phase of the argument was over:
First brother: pump-pump-pump-quickly aim-pull trigger Second brother: "Ow!! Dammit!!!" pump-pump-pump-pump-quickly aim-pull trigger First brother: "Ow!! Posted by: Skip at December 23, 2024 12:47 AM (fwDg9) When I was about 4, I had a metal one-shot derringer with a metal bullet. Didn't shoot it very hard but hard enough to break my Mom's favorite ornament (with a shot from the dining room table about 15 feet away from the tree; I was proud of that aimed shot, Mom not so much). Coolest toys I ever got were from maternal grandfather.
- Muzzle loader pistol and long gun. Actually fired small cork balls about .25 caliber. Used the red roll caps for the charge. More caps, more power. - Ornithopter. Like a 12" butterfly. Flapping wings and propeller. - Battery powered tool kit. Circ saw, drill, welder. Came with plastic boards and beams / rods. Actual mini circ saw! All powered with one of those big 12V latern batteries. Welder was basically a mini glue gun. Grandfther divorced Grandmother before I was born. Guess he felt something was owed... 🚨 RAW MILK UPDATE: Earlier this summer, I toured Mark McAfee’s @Raw_Farm and witnessed firsthand the precision and excellence behind their operations. As the nation’s leading raw milk producer in an industry under constant media attack and regulatory scrutiny, Mark and his team know there’s no room for error—they operate at the highest standards every day. Mark joined me on a call to give an update on what’s transpired and what is coming down the pike. Governor Newsom’s state of emergency over bird flu and raw milk isn’t about science—it’s about control. Despite zero evidence of raw milk ever transmitting a virus, despite Stanford studies showing raw milk neutralizes pathogens within days, and despite cows recovering naturally, the government persists with their tyrannical edicts. The real crisis is fear-based narratives and billion-dollar Big Pharma deals for vaccine manufacturers making up fabricated threats. Farmers like Mark are standing strong, and innovation is keeping shelves stocked, but it’s time to ask the question: Why suppress raw milk when science and history prove its safety? Farmers over Pharma. End the emerg Posted by: Braenyard - some absent friends are more equal than others _ at December 23, 2024 01:12 AM (scSKG) 376
