Henry The Widower1.jpg

The Widower
Edward Lamson Henry

For the most part, the subject matter of Edward Lamson Henry’s (1841 - 1919) artwork are mostly scenes of everyday life, generally cheery and humorous, and focusing on a type of nostalgic Americana. In some ways, Henry’s work reminds me of Norman Rockwell. And like Rockwell, although he was known for his merrier pieces, occasionally he dabbled in serious subjects. One of these is The Widower.

In The Widower, an old man sits alone in a dark room next to a small table set for tea. The title of the painting already gives us a hint about the mood, but even without it, details scattered throughout the painting communicate loss, loneliness, and memory. A small table set for two sits just off-center and lit by the sunlight streaming through an open window. At one end sits the man with his back to the viewer and shoulders slumped. His bent shoulders make him look tired, possibly from age, but also emotionally. The man doesn’t seem to be doing anything. He just sits there. I see a person alone, lost in thought in a cozy but dark room, and I feel guilty for trespassing on his private moment. A large, empty chair is opposite him at the table.

It looks like the wife died very recently. Tea seems to have been a daily ritual for this couple. He read his newspaper, and she sat in her comfy chair and did whatever she did. They enjoyed each other’s company during this quaint, quiet time. In the painting, the table is still set for two but the newspaper is untouched at his feet. He just sits there. Alone.

I think the chairs are interesting and reveal some details about the couple. His is small and simple with a straight, hard back while the other is large and looks quite comfortable. The husband seems like a practical, sober, down-to-earth man. He’s not interested in luxury and prefers simplicity. The wife was softer and gentler and balanced out his hard edges. Her chair is positioned straight on at the table implying a direct or open personality. He is positioned sideways, present but maybe a little detached.

A dog lies in shadow under the table. Many times in art, a dog can symbolize fidelity and family ties. The animal is also partially covered by the tablecloth and reminds me of a burial shroud. This couple was close. He still loves her but his life is dark now.

The light coming through the window shines directly onto the tea setting. This makes the work sadder. The widower took the time to set this table up. He put out a cup and saucer in front of the empty chair. I have heard of people who have lost loved ones who continue routines or keep places just as the deceased left them as a way to hang onto them. I think he’s trying to do something similar here, but, to me, it just enhances the loneliness. The man is silhouetted by the light, emphasizing his pose and mood. Everything else in the room is in darkness.

Above the painting’s center is a woman’s portrait. Because of where it is in the painting, I think it’s a portrait of the late wife. The woman in it is posed so that it seems she looks down at the widower. He is also facing the portrait but doesn’t — or can’t — look at it. The longing and loneliness feel raw. Next to the painting is a spent candle. Zooming in, I can see a blackened wick. Snuffed candles have long symbolized lost life or the passage of time.

The room depicted in the painting doesn’t look very big, but its shadows and single occupant make it seem larger. I say empty, but the room isn’t empty at all, not really. It is full of memory and emotion. I feel for this man. As described above, socially, this man would be stern and unemotional, and probably distant. In the privacy of his home, at a place where he probably was able to take off his armor, going about his daily routines, he let his true thoughts and feelings emerge. One of the things he did regularly was have tea with his wife. It was a small thing and probably one no one thought important. Now that she is gone, he continues the ritual to remember her. He loved his wife dearly and misses her deeply, and I feel guilty for witnessing it.

From a quick search he was a prolific painter and his other works are very bright and colorful and also convey a story of what life was like in the last part of the 19th century. The cat would sit on his lap, and occasionally go check my Mom's empty chair. She was lost too. After a few weeks, Dad started sitting in Mom's chair once in a while instead, and I think that helped him get over the hump.

84 Actually, now that people are mentioning widowhood, I am reminded of a story. Details are vague because I don't have time to get the proper information.

A German emperor (perhaps William I) had a dreadful marriage and was constantly arguing with his empress. After about 40-odd years of marital strife, she died.

Shortly after her funeral, an aide saw the emperor weeping and asked why. "You two never got along, why are you grieving?"

"You live with and argue with someone for years and then one day realize that you will never have anything to expect ever again,"
the emperor said, "and you will cry, too."

And it’s like yeah no shit assholes. Everything is increasing in price. We’ve been trying to tell you for the last 4 fucking years. It’s funny that car insurance increasing by 80% gets a shrug. Or eggs doubling in price. Or $4 gas. Or an $8 Big Mac. That was all right wing paranoia and misinformation about inflation. Inflation doesn’t exist.

But Netflix is increasing by $2 a month? Now inflation is suddenly a thing. And it’s outrageous!!!!

A complete list of DEIA offices and any employees who were in those offices as of Nov. 5, 2024
A complete list of all DEIA-related agency contracts as of Nov. 5, 2024
Any agency plans to fully comply with the above executive orders and this memorandum

" The Justice Department has reassigned key senior officials across multiple divisions as part of a leadership shakeup ahead of the expected confirmation of President Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general, Pam Bondi, multiple people familiar with the matter said Tuesday.

Among those moved to other positions inside the department is Bruce Swartz, the longtime head of the Justice Department’s office of international affairs, which handles extradition matters, according to two people who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss personnel moves. As many as 20 or so officials in all have been reassigned.

Another affected official is George Toscas, a veteran deputy assistant attorney general in the department’s national security division who, in addition to helping oversee major terrorism and espionage investigations, has also been a key supervisor in politically charged probes over the last decade including into Hillary Clinton’s handling of classified information and Trump’s hoarding of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate."

153 Edward Lamson Henry
The Widower, 1873
Oil on Wood, 8 x 5 7⁄8 in.

Kris, what a thoughtful and from my perspective accurate understanding of this painting. When I looked up the size I struck by how small it is, 8 x 6 essentially.

Who knows if Mr. Henry used this size for meaning but if he did I am inclined to think the message is this universal time in our lives is easily overlooked by the outside - this painting would easily get overwhelmed in a museum or lessor setting.

I see similar moments in McDonalds with regularity where elderly husbands, I think, often show up with regularity alone for a cup of coffee and minor breakfast. One could easily overlook them as having a stag meal on the way to somewhere else except I often see the same faces, in the same seats, at the same time of day as I drop in and out periodically. The scale there is life itself but given the impersonal nature of such places these moments too are easily overlooked.

The last observations is the use of season and foliage in this painting. The trees outside are full foliage which implies a time of healing, a renewed life, coming for this man once his grief has ebbed.

168 The pain of loss in this painting is breathtaking. The small, intimate room displays the comfort of long use in company. The different chairs, especially the wingback upholstered one (presumably the wife's) shows the furniture was chosen by each user for comfort in their tradition. What makes the scene so poignant is the sunlight on the tea service and shining on the world outside. But it can't touch the man's loneliness and grief. That he tries to maintain the custom of time shared with his late wife adds to the pathos.

169 G'morn, art lovers. Thank you, Kris, for your insights on the painting. The lighting is remarkably bright but spare, and the details are impressive.

Maybe someone has mentioned this already: on the left side of the framed portrait, bottom half, there's something seems to be sticking out from behind the frame, looks like papers.

His chair "is positioned sideways, present but maybe a little detached." Heh. I thought, easier to get into and out of if you don't have to struggle to scoot the chair back. I sympathize.

In the small version up top, I missed the dog entirely. Had to magnify the linked version just to see it well. Looks like a good old big canine. Faithful companion, hanging close by the man.

Love to you, Doof. This is one of the reasons this place matters/ aside from the excellent political and other types of analysis. It’s because although people can squabble and get vituperative , there is a lot of support for each other here. It happens at the Moron meet ups too, but for those that can’t get to them, this is a kind community.

May the Lord continue to comfort you and others who knew and loved your wife .

Another hoax. The fact that they are fighting this confirmation so hard tells you everything you need to know.

In a desperate attempt to halt his confirmation, Senators received an affidavit where Hegseth's former sister-in-law claimed his behavior caused ex-wife Samantha Hegseth to "fear for her safety."

The allegations were immediately shot down by Samantha herself, who said the information was not accurate.

"First and foremost, I have not and will not comment on my marriage to Pete Hegseth. I do not have representatives speaking on my behalf, nor have I ever asked anyone to share or speak about the details of my marriage on my behalf, whether it be a reporter, a committee member, a transition team member, etc."

So, it has never, ever snowed this much in the South before?

Not ever?

Because that's what unprecedented means. It doesn't mean unusual or extreme or within living memory. It means that it has never, ever happened before.

The misuse of the word unprecedented is just one of my hobby horses. Like, when Benedict resigned as pope, I kept seeing "analysis" saying that it was unprecedented and then, in the next sentence, "It hasn't happened in a thousand years." Well, there is precedent, then.

It doesn't snow often in DFW and when it does it's usually not much, but-

Took a long, sweeping left curve in the road and the car never straightened out so now I'm doing 40 going sideways. Car drifted toward the median, the left rear tire hit a pile of snow and turned the car into the median. Took down 3 small trees but the 4th stopped me cold.

State cop rolls up a couple minutes later, rolls down his window and asks if anyone is hurt. We tell him no and he says ok, tow truck will be along eventually, he had to go deal with the other dozens of wrecks on the highway. A couple months later I get a bill from the state of Maine for the 3 trees I took out. I'm still on the lam for that one.

387 Soros-Backed District Attorney Larry Krasner Exploring State Charges Against January 6ers Pardoned by Trump | Cristina Laila, The Gateway Pundit

Soros-backed Philly District Attorney Larry Krasner is exploring state charges against January 6ers pardoned by President Trump.

Trump pardoned more 1,500 January 6 defendants as one of his first acts as US President on Monday.

However, as expected, a Democrat DA is now trying to bring state charges to pardoned January 6ers.

Larry Krasner is seeking state charges against pardoned January 6 defendants who live in Pennsylvania.

Krasner will have an uphill legal battle because of double jeopardy laws.

Per CNN reporter Marshall Cohen: “Philadelphia DA Larry Krasner, a progressive Democrat, is exploring state charges against pardoned US Capitol rioters from PA. This would face significant legal hurdles, like double jeopardy. But he told me, “you can have a state prosecution for conduct that was not fully encompassed in the federal prosecution.”

Posted by: andycanuck (5LoD7) at January 22, 2025 10:44 AM (5LoD7)

388 Recall that Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort was hit with state charges in anticipation of a Trump pardon in 2019.

Then-Manhattan DA Cy Vance announced state charges against Manafort in March 2019 just MINUTES after the former Trump campaign chairman was sentenced for the second time on federal charges.

The Communists in the Southern District of New York (SDNY) hatched a plot to go around ‘double jeopardy’ laws. This way Manafort would still serve prison time if Trump were to issue a presidential pardon.

479 473 the big problem was the English dude. Very bland, rather poor actor, flat as the left rear tire on TJM's Prius.

He's our eyes and ears and needs to be able to convey a lot. He just couldn't.

A central weakness but I found all of the Japanese actors to be pretty great.

So, not really out of place though they might have made more of it than was historically accurate.

515 For members of the horde who have a Netflix account, I highly recommend 'The Man on the Inside' with Ted Danson. I believe it is just 10 episodes in the 1st series and it is wonderful. Danson plays a retired architect widower of 1 year who just rattles around his big house. His daughter urges him to find something to do so he finds a job assignment with a detective agency to go undercover in a nursing home to find out who stole a valuable ruby necklace from one of the residents. Many wonderful characters, great writing, it is both comedy, heartwarming, and sad at times. It will especially be relevant to anyone past the age of 60. They are working on a 2nd season.

From a Little Birdie on Trump winning the birthright citizenship battle at the Supreme Court (where this will ultimately go):

"The best argument is that a president has power to end birthright citizenship if its an invasion. Whoever on Trump's team that crafted his EO appears to be following an opinion from Federal Judge Jim Ho making that case (or what we call in my legal circles "The Ho Invasion Theory"). I'm not sure even Clarence Thomas agrees yet with ending birthright citizenship whole cloth. But I do think more judges would be willing to sign on to ending it under the guise of a president stopping an invasion as opposed to a governor like when Texas tried this. Because presidents have wide constitutional latitude when it comes to matters of national defense, and these illegal aliens are causing enough harm to be treated as enemy combatants. Or at the very least this level of invasion has the potential to. And most agree that so-called birthright citizenship does not apply to enemy combatants."

526 This painting hits like a ton of bricks. Lost my wife of some 30 years a little over 10 years ago. That first year was dark. So many nights I came home from my shift at the hospital, dumped something into a pot, then stood eating it over the sink. My ritual was to leave her robe on the bedpost and wheelchair next to her side of the bed, where they belonged. Life did move on, friends introduced me to a window and we have been married 7 years now.

533 I think it interesting that the dog is lying at (his accustomed place?) the foot of her chair, rather than near the man.
