Had to show up the next morning and claim my tool box and found out the bank had gone out and seized all the aircraft enroute and stranded the customers, too.

AI can be a hilariously bad farce. I watched a YouTube short with one of those obviously fake voices narrating a robbery gone right (i.e., the thieves were outsmarted by the business owner) and the narration said the thieves had gone "pale" when they realized their plight. Yes, they were plainly Black. 1) the AI was just a bunch of cliches, and 2) the cliches were misused. The comments section was hilarious, which may be the one good thing about AI. Evening and morning, early risers and Sunday toilers! Is it really Sunday already?
We drove out to the far suburbs across a corner of the lake last night to eat at Cracker Barrel. We got held up by traffic and then by an accident on the interstate, so a 35-minute trip took almost an hour. That said: The CB food was good, catfish for me and pot roast for Linda, with corn muffins or biscuits included plus sides like corn or hashbrowns. And the return trip was a breeze, with the big Buick really performing, cruising at 70+ while feeling to the driver that it was loafing at 50. On balance, I guess, a pretty good outing. Yesterday was the shortest day in terms of daylight, sunrise to sunset, which was about 9:49:25 here at 34.8Nish latitude. Today, the 22nd, however is the longest apparent (true) solar day, at 29.9s longer than 24 hours. This is measured from high noon to high noon over the day. Latest sunrise has not happened yet, although we're past earliest sunset. These dates are latitude dependent, the closer you are to the poles, the tighter the window around the solstice. The thing about driving on the Interstate at night in outlying areas, you don't see any landscape going by. It's like you're piloting a small star yacht or shuttlecraft through an area of space where dust clouds obscure a lot of the stars. Last night I found myself hitting 70-75 (in the legal area of 70 mph) because I simply did not feel I was going that fast.
The analogy of "star yacht" breaks down because there were a lot of other vehicles rushing past me, esp. on the way out to the restaurant. Well I just learned another tid-bit about the loss of the F-18F Super Hornet incident over the Red Sea.
USS Gettysburg was in charge of the Truman battle group's air defense. Which means their CIC managing the defense against the Houthi attacks failed to keep friendly aircraft out of the engagement area. Even in World War II the US Navy knew to keep their aircraft out of range of their own anti-aircraft fire. Thankfully both pilots survived. And in todays news about some billionaire weirdo:
The pair, who got engaged in May 2023, will tie the knot next weekend in a winter wonderland-themed ceremony at Matsuhisa, a lavish sushi restaurant the couple reportedly bought out, the Daily Mail reported Saturday. Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez will reportedly hold a $600 million wedding. >> Was this a one-off? Was the test structured to favor AI? Probably not, when you see a doctor and present symptoms, they don’t just make wild assed guesses about what may be wrong with you, they are taking the corpus of knowledge they have learned and applying it to your case. AI can do that faster and more efficiently. The issue is that there is not always a 1 to 1 correlation between presented symptoms and underlying cause. AI can’t be programmed to take hunches or deeper speculation. Posted by: Thomas Bender at December 22, 2024 07:20 AM (XV/Pl) 111

You have a point there, but I for one adore sushi. Whether I'm interesting or not, it's still one of my favorite foods. Add in the ambiance of a mellow Japanese restaurant, and it's even better. I also love raw hamburger. Used to order it in France, steak tartare, served with a raw egg on top and a side of fries. If a vegan saw that, he would go into convulsions. Grit is running a 1949 oater called Brimstone with the young Forrest Tucker as a corrupt sheriff, and . . . Walter Brennan in one of his serious roles, as the patriarch of a stage robber family. Brennan was amazing. He could go from comic sidekick in To Have and Have Not to a steel-eyed bandit leader in this film, and later to his comic sidekick "Stumpy" in Rio Bravo. In this film he really makes you believe that his old man with the cracked voice is perfectly willing to shoot people if they get in his way.

Bezos coughed up a healthy settlement for his divorce and now is coughing up a much smaller amount to wed his next bride. He’s got it and can spend it how he wants. Hopefully it brings him happiness. Ex bride remarried and divorced in 2 years. Money isn’t a guarantee of happiness.

@FenelonSpoke: Jeff Bezos started Amazon back when it was only about selling books. To his credit, he turned it (and himself) into a massive success.
However, he tends to get bored with a company after a time and leaves it in others' hands to manage, resulting in a predictable amount of downfall in quality and reliability. It's still quite viable, but their marketplace is very much a Caveat Emptor sort of thing (beware the randomized-named companies that sell Chinese produced crap on Amazon.) He also swooped in and saved the Washington Post when it was about to file for bankruptcy, purchasing it and making it his latest pet project. It thus was saved and was allowed to continue as Bezos' pet leftist media mouthpiece and you've seen the quality of the WaPo hit pieces these last years. Recently when WaPo was about to endorse Kamala Harris before the most recent election, Bezos stepped in to stop them from doing that because even he realized that was utter suicide. I guess hemorrhaging cash at an alarming rate eventually gets a CEO's attention and makes them have a moment of sanity and clarity. (Continues in part 2) Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at December 22, 2024 08:31 AM (O7YUW) 195
@Fenelon Spoke, Part 2 of 2:
He (Bezos) is also the CEO of Blue Origin, a spacecraft design/launch company that has visions of being a serious competitor for SpaceX, but most of what they do is launch sue-balls in court against SpaceX. It seems like Bezos is terribly jealous of Musk's success, even though he's a major success in his own right. Envy may be an issue. And this is why I think the Bible's advice of counting your blessings, not your problems is the better way to live. It is far too easy to get focused on worldly goals and forget that all of that turns to dust when you die, and that you came into this world with nothing, and you'll leave with nothing from it. Something about wide roads to destruction... Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at December 22, 2024 08:31 AM (O7YUW) 196
Congresswoman Kay Granger, 81, from Ft Worth is the longest serving GOP House member... She finally has been found living in a dementia care facility in Texas.
I think this is referred to as an "Irish Exit". Yet another bad look for the GOP. These monsters will keep clinging to power even though they still get all of the diamond level retirement and health benefits once out of office. And not trusting Abbott to replace her is just evil. In cat news, Dagny La Siberienne actually displayed some affection to me last night. She hopped on the arm of the sofa next to me and was bumping me with her head, and kept doing the same with my hand. I wonder if she smelled something she liked on me? I was wearing my dark green Shetland wool sweater. I told her, "The sheep whose wool made this sweater were long gone by the time your breed of cat ever came to America."

Last night I dreamed I was Tim Allen's son! Actually the son of his character from Last Man Standing. (Yes, he had only daughters in that, but hey, it was a dream.) I'd bought a black VW Beetle, one of the original 1960s or early '70s models. It seemed a little larger inside than any Beetle I've ever been in, more like a '66 Mustang. The carpet in front was terribly loose and slid forward, and the dashboard seemed to be coming loose and sliding downward on the passenger side. Still I insisted to Tim it was fixable.
Odd thing: Just before I woke up, I opened the rear hatch, which on a Beetle covers the engine, and it was empty. In the dream I concluded that the engine had somehow been moved up front. Before I could check, the alarm went off. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at December 22, 2024 08:46 AM (omVj0) 205
In other feline news, as Dexter, the Wonder Dog is staying with us as our son and his wife visit, the kittens are pretty convinced that while Dexter is downstairs with us, they should be in our room sleeping.
However, as Dexter sleeps in the room with our son and his wife, it seems to be a continuation of the morning routine that I get a feline face in mine at 0445, demanding that we go downstairs and get breakfast for them. Then, Romper Room till Dexter gets up. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at December 22, 2024 08:47 AM (a1415) Posted by: dantesed at December 22, 2024 08:47 AM (Oy/m2) 207
It's tough call what to do about elected "public servants" when they face decline and death. I understand being private about illness, but they are representing hundreds of thousands or millions of people, in the case of Senators.
Here in Eastern NC, we had a long-serving Congressman, Walter B. Jones, who passed in 2019. He never should have been on the ballot in 2018, but won handily, as he did. He did get a "leave of absence" from the House, but was sworn in at his home in Farmville, because he could not travel to DC. After his death, it was announced he had ALS and had broken his hip. He was 76. Posted by: Ashes to Ashes, Funk to Funky at December 22, 2024 08:49 AM (G5+As) 208

We don't have that problem with standoffish cats here! In fact, Mr Trouble went through the barrier to wake me up this morning. I feed both cats at 4, then go back to sleep. Fanny usually comes into the bedroom for pets then. Troubles gets petted when I get up, as he goes through his routine before going out. And Hank the stray was out, so he got fresh food too. Time to pet Jake.
